Jennifer Lawrence in haute couture Dior at the Globes: too booby or just lovely?

Jennifer Lawrence

At last night’s Golden Globes, Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role as Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook. As such, Jennifer is one of the forerunners going into the last leg of the Oscar race, but she faces stiff competition from Jessica Chastain, who won Best Actress in a Drama. Both ladies have been nominated for an Oscar once before (Jennifer for Winter’s Bone and Jessica for The Help), so it will be interesting to see who comes up as the winner for the Academy Award. Here’s Jennifer’s speech, and it’s very appropriate and charming. I love that she started out with “I beat Meryl! That’s what it says!

Now let’s talk about Jennifer’s dress, which I didn’t really like that much. This gown is not nearly as bad as some of her other looks but felt like a letdown compared to the amazing Prabal Gurung at the Critic’s Choice and the Valentino numbers from this weekend. At least it wasn’t Marchesa though, right? Jennifer wore a strapless, dark orangy (she called it “coral“) Dior haute couture gown, and she said “I don’t really know what haute means but I had to say it.” I do believe her on that note and do like the bottom half of this dress (the skinny belt is actually pretty great), but the boob area was just silly looking in this dress. I think that if the “shelf” had pushed both boobs together more, it would have been acceptable, but the two-cup look gives the effect of “boob darts.” Madonna would probably approve, but JLaw can do better than this!

Hair and makeup seems to be a real problem area for JLaw on the red carpet. God, she is just so beautiful, but she needs to surround herself with more talented people in this department. I’d have loved to have seen her hair in long, loose curls around her shoulders with rosier makeup. The Chopard jewelry was a success though. Those earrings are gorgeous.

it’s better than Jessica Chastain’s dress but it’s not her

  2. LadyMTL says:

I love the dress from the waist down…the color is gorgeous and I really like the belt. The chest area though – yikes. She had torpedo boobs!

  3. La Calabaza says:

She needs to stick to simple dresses like that stunning Calvin Klein dress she wore 2 years ago for the Academy Awards. Simple and yet chic work for her.

    Her makeup artist hates her.

    • RocketMerry says:

Agreed on all counts! Why is her make-up always so off?!

Sidenote, after Jennifer’s clip the video launced another clip (I might have clicked something, I don’t know), of Kevin Costner this time. How weird was he?! He sounded so surly and sour. Is it just me? Was he pissed that he was not awarded for his career like Jodie Foster?
      Does anybody know?

    • GoodCapon says:

She knocked that CK dress out of the park. I still think it was one of her better, if not the best, outfits.

  4. tracking says:

Yeah, I guess the bust design is a little weird, but I still think she looks smashing. Elegant but age appropriate. Beautiful color. Love her.

  5. Bronwyn says:

i like it a lot- i just wish she had worn a big awesome necklace.

    • Rachel says:

I was thinking bracelet. I actually like that she kept it simple, but I feel like she could’ve added a small bracelet for a bit of sparkle.

  6. smartyparty says:

I actually love her hair and makeup. Or maybe I just love how completely beautiful she is.

The dress… I just want to HOIST it up! I actually want a job where I go to red carpets and just HOIST the dresses up all evening long because every time I see the fashion at these events I think how bad they all need it. But that dress was amazing, other than that.

    • PrettyTarheel says:

Ha! I’m always the same way…Everytime I go to a wedding I want to hoist all the brides and bridesmaids dresses up. I worked in a bridal salon when I was younger and I swear it’s a lack of proper shaping wihtin the gown and a lack of proper undergarments. Your girls may be perky, but unless your dress is very well structured, they can’t lift several pounds of gown. I loved gowns that were made to put the skirt’s weight on the hips instead of putting it all on the chest. If your gown isn’t structured to distribute the weight, give those girls some support! Take the weight off their “shoulders!”

      • teenydj says:

I couldn’t agree with you more. For the millionth time, ladies, if your dress sags, it makes it look like your boobs sag. Hoist up the dress and the girls will look perky!

    • Silk Spectre says:

I do so wish magic was real, ’cause then I could just get my Time Turner, show up on the limo before she gets on the carpet, do the boob hoist, and change the dress from strapless to something with a halter-neck type of solution, and be on my merry way.

Then this would be a perfect look for her.

  7. NerdMomma says:

Haha “boob darts.” I still think she looked amazing and her waist looks like it’s about 22 inches. The effect of the dress is gorgeous.

  8. lucy2 says:

I liked it except for the boob shelf thing, which was so weird it ruined the whole look for me.

  9. T.C. says:

Hate, hate, hate the boob part of this dress. What the heck??? Everything below boob level was perfect. I liked her hair and makeup too. Just the boob thing killed this outfit.

  10. hoya_chick says:

See I actually loved this dress and her entire look. One of my favs of the night. It all worked for me. I loved the color, so pretty and vibrant. The belt is fantastic and while the bust area looks a little weird I think it works. She has a pretty ample bust, but she wasn’t spilling out of the dress. I think it was a dress fit for the occasion and for someone nominated and favored to win. I really loved it. Her hair and make also worked for me. She is youthful and mature enough to pull this off.

And look on the bright side, now that she has that Dior contract we won’t be seeing her in those Marchesa monstrosities she usually wears! Ha, small victories should be celebrated.

    • V4Real says:

I hate when this happen you post something but it doesn’t go through; must be a glitch in The Matrix.

Anyways what I wrote earlier was that I loved this look on her and it was definetely one of my favorite looks of the night. But I was a little skeptical about what was going on in the boob area. I’m still crushing on her.

  11. Marianne says:

This look was almost a winner for me. I loved the colour. I love that it accentuated her waist, but the poofy boobs ruined it for me.

  12. cf says:

Color looks great on her. top I did not like, and I think she needs to work on her eye makeup. She looks much better with ligher eye makeup.

Also the meryl line was from the first wives club! I liked that she quoted it. “what does it say? I beat Meryl!”

  13. bsh says:

She’s just stunning. If only she had a better stylist/taste for fashion.. PS: any comments on the way she adreessed BC in her speech? “You make me a better person everyday” or something like this…

    • Susi says:

Nah, a lot of people are talking about this but she actually used past tense “you made me…”, so I believe she was referring to him improving her acting whilst they were making the film she just won an award for. Nothing there.

  14. Tig says:

This dress did her no favors, tho the color is pretty on her. The bodice is atrocious.

  15. normades says:

Hate the boob darts. Too many cuts on this fussy dress. She needs a new stylist, I really hated everything she wore during the hungar games junket.

  16. Mila says:

    I love it 🙂

  17. annabelle says:

Her boobs are blinking at me.

  18. Rachel says:

I like her. I really do. But why do her eyes always look so dead in photos??? Is it that she’s not comfortable so her smile looks fake and her eyes look blank?

    • Gaby says:

That’s exactly what I wanted to say! Her smile is so fake and forced, it really doesn’t look good at all, if she’s just nervous, she should just stay serious, it looks better. Her eye make up is just destroying her face, her stylist knows nothing about make up for different features.

      • Anna says:

I actually think that she is not goregous but a very pretty girl, very fresh. Make up in general doesn’t become her. She looks her best make up free

    • Belle says:

I usually mention this, and I’m not trying to be mean, but her smile always drives me nuts. I think she is gorgeous when she is not smiling… but the smile always looks fake and plastered on. I don’t know if it actually is a ‘fake and uncomfortable’ smile, or if that is simply the way she smiles?

    • judyjudy says:

I am glad you mentioned this because I feel the same way about photographs of her. Her eyes look very vacant…like there’s nothing but wind in her head (which we know is not the case).

I have to admit that she isn’t my favorite. I don’t understand all of the attention she gets.

      • Becky1 says:

That’s funny-my husband made a similar comment about her eyes after we saw SLP.

I don’t get all of the Jennifer Lawrence hype. She’s a pretty girl with a great body but in terms of talent I think she’s really overrated. She was decent in SLP but not great IMO.

  19. JC says:

Did anyone else hear that she had the flu? If so, she looked good considering!

    • Stellax2 says:

Yes, she was being interviewed and mentioned it. I think she felt quite lousy. At the beginning of the globes, they showed a shot of her with a light blue jacket around her. She probably had the chills. I felt bad for her because the flu is no joke.

I didn’t think much of the make-up, dress or hair but I can’t help but generally like her regardless of her fashion sense.

  20. Mrs. Ari Gold says:

This made her nipples look like they were pointing down – how can that ever be a good thing? The nipple part was shockingly unflattering and girl has a great rack so that was weird.
    Otherwise dress was fantastic.

  21. bea says:

The bust line is a disaster area, but the rest of the dress is fab. The bodice and the skirt fit perfectly.

The construction of the bust line makes her breasts look like they are pointed downward – not a good look. It also looks like crumbs would collect there.

  22. kay says:

She needs to not smile. some people cannot smile nicely, and she is one of them. she looks like a muppet when she smiles.
the third pic down, gorgeous. she is smiling with her eyes and just gently moving her mouth- perfect.
    the huge grin thing- riduculous.

    don’t smile Jen!

    • Belle says:

      ^^^This!!

    • Mila says:

Seriously? So what, she is young. If she wants she can grin. At least she isn’t fake like so many actresses today with their plastic faces and bodies.

      • jamesnsparrow says:

You know Jodie Foster is saying something right about public perception when a 22 year old who loves movies and is nominated for a Golden Globe isn’t even allowed to smile because it might make her look like a muppet. How anyone could ever allow themselves to dictate a complete stranger’s behaviour based on looks alone is beyond me.

WTF do you think she should be saying to herself when she’s in front of the camera – “let me hold my emotions in check on one of the best nights of my career or someone on Celebitchy might think I look like Miss Piggy”?

FYI – I was agreeing with Mila and disagreeing with everyone else above…

    • Suze says:

Good god – believe me there are plenty of people who like her smile.

  23. taxi says:

She looked great. There were man odd boob looks last night & JLaw’s was far from the worst. Good color, belt, skirt style & nice to see her hair up & showing off her neck & shoulders. Some of the women had so much hair hanging everywhere that it was distracting – think Chastain. On the other hand, AnnE should have borrowed some very long hair to hide her grossly anorexic arms.

  24. Melissa says:

I liked the dress on her, not the breast area.

  25. MG says:

Boob area is odd. Everything else is good.

  26. Quinn says:

If a dress makes it look like there’s 20 inches of space between your neck and your boobs…put it back!

  27. jamminatorr says:

I loved this dress! But I agree.. JLaw always has something weird going on with her hair/makeup. Its never amazing.

  28. Diana says:

I loved the dress! the boobs situation did bother me but not enough to make me dislike the dress and I also liked the make up. Her winning speach was funny and overal it was a great night for her.

  29. shewolf says:

I love it. I agree that the makeup is off, especially the eye makeup but other than that she’s fabulous.

  30. Belle says:

Dress looks beautiful… but those boob cones/darts (whatever they were) kind of ruined it for me.

I don’t think her make up was bad, just not great… and hair, from the front I didn’t love it, but it looks like it was probably pretty from the sides/back?

As mentioned (several times) above… I can’t believe I am suggesting that someone NOT smile… but she needs to… *sigh* not smile. There, I said it. 🙁

  31. G says:

Every producer was looking at that body and imagining it in a film. Yes, to booby, but she got away with it and managed to look innocent at the same time. Genius.

  32. erika says:

hair and makeup are a BIG problem for her, big….huge

  33. 4evaRedd says:

She’s a young woman who looked lovely.

  34. TG says:

I am one of the few who loved this dress. It was one of my favorites of the night. And even though I find AnnE insufferable hers too was a top dress for me. I found Jennifer’s speech refreshing and just the opposite of AnnE’s fake speech. I also love that Jennifer talks about not being comfortable in heels and dresses and such but she does it so much more simply and believalby than the insufferable emo Kristen Stewart. Though I do think she should stop with the pretending to be an idiot thing. I mean you are in this business so you can take 5 seconds to google the meaning of “haute couture”. If she doesn’t grow up just a bit she will become tiring to us quickly just as K-Stew did. Did anyone watch the aftershow on E! and did you see the interview they did with Nikki Reed? They asked her how she felt about J-Law representing their age group and she said that J-Law was one of her favorite actresses right now so was proud and she mentioned other talented acresses in their age group such as Carrie Mulligan. I loved it because you could tell she deliberatly excluded Kristen Stewart. I guess the rumors of them hating each other are true.

  35. Janet says:

I thought she, Blunt, Nicole Richie and Dame Helen Mirren knocked it out of the ball park.

  36. videli says:

There’s some serious corseting going on there. I’m getting a corset.

  37. patricia says:

I love the dress as well. I thought she looked beautiful and her speech was cute and funny. I’m not sure why some people pretended to be offended by it. It seems as though they can’t just let her have her moment and enjoy it without trying to ruin it for her.

  38. belle says:

    I love Jen-Lawr. She’s amazing!

  39. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

I like it – from the waist down. Everything from the waist up (except those earrings!) looks awful. I hate that boob area, ugly.

And I think she looks super plain now, where as I used to think she was pretty. Weird.

  40. Kim says:

She’s not attractive at all. People saying she’s gorgeous must live somewhere were the average weight for women is 250 pounds and most people have only 15 teeth. Her eyes are dead and her head is shaped like a potato. The girl can act but is slightly overrated. She only gets accolades because every actress around her age just reads lines.

  41. Jae says:

To me the boob area is less concerning than the things this dress is doing to her general shape. I mean, she looks really top-heavy. Not as in ‘busty’, but as in “her chest and shoulders are twice the width and the bulk of her hips”.
Like, she has slim hips, slim legs, tiny waist and then there cones the neckline and she just EXPANDS, cartoon character-like. The dress looking like it can barely contain her back doesn’t help either.

  42. Susi says:

I actually think she looks pretty fantastic. I think the colour and fabric of the dress are both great, I love the belt, and I think her tiny waist and gorgeous hips were shown off to perfection. Agreed the bust is not the greatest and it needed to be hiked right up as it makes it look like her bust is really low on her torso, but I think overall she looked wonderful.

I have to say, this does show how warped Hollywood is about weight and size and how skewed our perception of stars’ size and weight is from viewing scrawny underweight people on our screens for so long, because the girl has a sensational figure and a teeny tiny waist. She is frequently called fat (I have seen comments to this effect everywhere, including under videos of this acceptance speech) or described using Hwood euphemisms for fat and she calls herself normal. This is not normal, this is spectacular. She has a classic hourglass figure and it is sad that this could any any way be seen as fat.

I think her hair is a hard colour right now because she is transitioning between Katniss’ dark locks and her usual blonde, and the in between hair colour doesn’t suit her which makes her face look slightly off. Also, I agree that her makeup artist doesn’t understand her face. I think she looks at her best with slightly 60s eyes, with the cats eyeliner on top of her eyes. This looks a bit smudgy and unprofessional. It doesn’t suit her.

She did say that she had the flu and she must have felt like absolute crap so good on her for battling through! I had never fully appreciated how horrible the flu was as I’d never had it, then last year I caught it and actually felt like I was dying. She looks a bit pale and wan and like she’s gritting her teeth ans smiling through the tiredness and pain and I can only commend her for it! So I’d say that’s why she has “blank eyes” and a “forced smile” as people are suggesting above.

Finally, I thought her speech was fantastic. She is one funny, down-to-earth girl and I love it. Yay J-Law!

  43. jess says:

i liked *most* of her speech, but my mother and my jaws DROPPED with that quip about meryl. hopefully everyone just laughs, because making quips about “the meryl streep” isnt a smart move. ever.

  44. A Fan says:

Ridiculously unflattering…what a waste of young boobs.

  45. Caroline says:

Don’t like her makeup, earrings or dress.
    Can’t see her shoes
Now I’ll say something nice..hair is okay, kind-of

  46. MisJes says:

This was hands-down, the best look of the night for me. I’m not sure I understand the hate on for her style, but there are many reasons why this was a win.

The bust area – I think the divided cup and pleat along the cups was entirely appropriate and flattering.
A shelf bust line would have aged the dress and taken away a simple design feature that added femininity and debility to the gown and what was quite heavy material.
The cut, colour, fit and length of the gown was immaculate, and I LOVE the waist and belt, it is fashionable, age appropriate and drew eyes to her lovely figure – such a flattering addition!

Her jewellery and clutch looked great, and her hair and make-up – why the hate on for it?! She ALWAYS looks fresh faced, groomed and put together in this department, and her team has done a lovely job on her here.

Finally, I am so happy for her well deserved win! I’ll just copy and paste what I wrote about it on another thread –

Jennifer Lawrence – a well deserved win and such a lovely speech. She spoke with such grace and humility, yet managed to inject some of her humour, true to her personality. Easily best moment of the show for me.

Take note Anne”E”! This is what a courteous, elegant and charismatic winner is. Her disrespect for her co-star and pugnacious “Oh, ME! I never expected this!” act was transparent and beyond irritating to endure.

  47. Asdfg says:

Not her best look! I’m not a fan of the dress! Not on her anyways! 😛

    • dj says:

JLaw was actually getting over the flu. I would have hated going to get dressed up while being sick. I loved her acceptance speech.
