David Foster’s daughters ‘love Katharine McPhee,’ are ‘happy about the engagement’

Music producer David Foster, 68, is engaged to 34 year-old singer/actress Katharine McPhee. It will be David’s fifth marriage and Katharine’s second. At the time of their engagement, some comments from David’s daughters on social media highlighted how young their mom-to-be is. Three out of four of David’s children are older than Katharine and his daughters have called her “mommmyy” and “stepmom” on social media along with joking that they hadn’t heard of the engagement. There’s speculation that this means they’re rolling their eyes at their dad’s engagement, but someone wants us to know that’s not the case and that they’re happy for him. There’s no mention of the fact that Katharine and David are reportedly planning to have children as soon as possible.

David Foster‘s daughters Erin and Sara couldn’t be more thrilled that Katharine McPhee will be their new step-mom.

“They love Katharine, and they’re happy about the engagement,” a source tells PEOPLE of the sisters, who starred in the VH1 reality show Barely Famous.

“Of course they joke about the age difference,” the source adds (Erin, 35, and Sara, 37, who are both older than McPhee, 34), “but she’s so sweet and really gets along with the family. She’s spent a ton of time with them. No one has anything bad to say about her.”

Adds the source: “They love their dad — they jokingly call him a ladies’ man, but they have a good time with it. There’s no bad blood.”

That’s good I guess, but it sounds like damage control or like someone is trying to get ahead of a story. I know that David Foster was married to Yolanda Hadid from 2011 to 2017, but I didn’t realize that his third wife, from 1991 to 2005, was Linda Thompson, whom I know as Bruce Jenner’s first wife. (His children are primarily from his first and second marriages.) Linda was asked about her ex’s engagement and she expressed concern for the age difference but then backtracked:

“I wish them well,” the 68-year-old told Us… She added that she “can’t dodge” the headline-making news about Foster, 68, and McPhee, 34.

“I think the only thing that’s a real deterrent, I think, is the age difference,” Thompson said. “But I think life doesn’t have any guarantees anyway. If you find someone you love, go for it, you know? [McPhee is] a lovely person. She’s beautiful and she’s talented, and they have that musicality in common, so that goes a long way.”

I’ve only seen this lady interviewed once, for Caitlyn’s 20/20 profile (before she was called Caitlyn), and I really like her. She’s straightforward and seems genuine. I imagine her saying this with her eyebrows raised slightly and giving a shrug, like “whatever, that’s ancient history, I’m well rid of him.”

In sad news, Katharine’s dad passed away earlier this week. She had to cancel some performances of her Broadway show Waitress in the wake of her dad’s death.

Does anyone else remember that Linda Thompson was Elvis’ girlfriend for about five years before his death? She’s had quite a life!

    • Original Jenns says:

Yes!!! She must have seen so much in her life!

    • Jamie says:

I do! In fact, I was just going to comment that I knew her more as Elvis’ last girlfriend than Jenner or Foster’s ex.
Plus, I think she’s a successful songwriter so she’s definitely got her own resume apart from being famous men’s plus one.

      • holly hobby says:

She co-wrote a song from the Bodyguard soundtrack with David Foster. I think it was called I am Nothing?

    • holly hobby says:

Yep I remember her as Elvis’ girlfriend. She wrote a memoir and it was pretty interesting. It was also an easy read so do pick it up when you get a chance.

  2. Louise says:

You know what? I kinda like these two together and I like that Katherine is like let people say what they want to say. As long as they are happy, who cares?

  3. TheHeat says:

Another FUN FACT about David Foster & Linda Thompson’s marriage:
They actually had a reality show (before the Kardashians, I believe) called “Princes of Malibu”, which was about the Jenner brothers (Linda’s sons with Caitlyn Jenner) and their mom & step-dad. Spencer Pratt was also in it, as one of Brody’s friends.
(NOTE: I have a fabulous memory for useless information & song lyrics…but there are days when I need to look down to make sure I remembered to put on pants)

    • Boxy Lady says:

@Theheat Based on your note, I think you and I are twins 😃 I mean, sure I could probably win on Jeopardy but would I forget to wear clothes to the taping? Yeah, probably.

  4. K says:

Linda Thompson was Caitlyn Jenner’s *2nd* wife.

    • Jane says:

Technically Linda is Bruce jenner’s second wife.

She was never married to Caitlyn Jenner the first.

      • K says:

You’re right, *Bruce’s* 2nd wife. I mentally toggled between using C or B and landed incorrectly.

  5. Purrrr says:

Those Foster sisters are so funny. I love Barely Famous.

  6. Mattie says:

I can’t stand this woman!!! I remember when she had an affair with actress Mary McCormack’s husband (while being married herself )….which she stated she didn’t regret since she learned so much about herself

    • holly hobby says:

Yep there’s that so I doubt her love is genuine. More like a way to boost her singing career. However, Foster has not produced a hit album in years so she’s catching him on a downswing. Yeah I’m cynical and her actions have not indicated it’s true love and roses. I hope he has a prenup ready.

I actually met Katharine McPhee at Nordstrom’s back when she was on Smash. My best friend was a huge fan of that show and ran up to her to tell her. We were both surprised at how socially awkward she is. I’m a trauma nurse so I’m used to talking to random people from all walks of life and often get bombarded by patients/visitors so I’m used to turning myself “on” so to speak. We were both baffled at how she could make it in Hollywood with that awkward ass personality. Anyway, maybe it was an off day but she just came across like a weirdo. Also, we were the only ones to recognize her. Literally nobody else did, not even the staff. Wet blanket is all I associate with her anymore, and then that Mary McCormack shit happened and I was not surprised. It reminded me of a comment my cousin made when we met her brother’s boring/quiet girlfriend and were all unimpressed: “but mom, the quiet ones put out”. Maybe she keeps her personality in the bedroom.

  7. LL says:

I think you mean 4 out of 5 of his daughters. Yeah, there’s a fifth one.

  8. Jenni says:

So gross. Imagine sucking his old saggy balls…. She must really love that lifestyle.
