Nikki Reed: I haven’t done anything to my face just reduced my chemical intake

2018 Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Viewing Party
Nikki Reed got a gig as a Tom’s of Maine spokesperson, which seems like a great company to represent and on brand for her. She’s all about being natural and is an animal lover, but surprisingly she’s not a vegan. She’s vegetarian and doesn’t eat meat but she’s more into balance and doing the best you can, she described it in a 2016 interview with Cosmo. Anyway Nikki had to get quoted so she claims that her face changed due to switching her diet and that she hasn’t had a nose job or veneers. I don’t think people were calling her out for being plastic but she’s explaining it anyway. She also had some advice about looking into the products we use and eat and making sure we know what we’re consuming. This reminds me of the great thread we had a couple of days ago in Kaiser’s story about Goop’s expensive skincare recommendations.

After years of “unhealthy living,” the actress and new mom began to pay closer attention to the ingredients in her food and beauty products — and the notable results have altered her appearance so much that she can hardly recognize her younger self. “I looked like a totally different person,” she tells PEOPLE.

Fans have noticed too — and some are quick to assume that her new look is the result of plastic surgery. “It’s amazing what a little inflammation due to unhealthy living can do to the bridge of your nose, or your pores, or your teeth,” the 30-year-old says of her younger self. “I have even read false things about myself like that I had a nose job, or veneers. Funny enough, I haven’t done a single thing to my face, except changed my lifestyle and reduced my chemical intake.”

The lifestyle changes she’s made — from carefully considering product ingredients to taking up Acro Yoga — have helped the actress to look and feel healthier than ever. “What people don’t realize is that it’s all connected. What you put in your body affects not just your insides, but [also] your outsides and your mind. And inversely, what you put on your body affects your insides as well.”

Reed has long been conscious of what goes into the food and products that she chooses, but she felt a renewed dedication to researching ingredients when she learned she was pregnant with daughter Bodhi in May 2017.

“Suddenly I was thinking about the health and wellness of another human being sharing my body, and I wanted to create the best home in there for her as possible,” she explains. “I remember reading labels on products that I used regularly that said ‘not safe for pregnant women,’ and thinking, ‘That’s strange, I wonder why it isn’t safe for me now that I’m expecting? What is it in these products that would be deemed okay for me a few months ago, and now they’re off limits?’ ”

“You don’t have to do everything all at once,” she insists. “I would definitely start with the things you use every day, like your face cream, just to have an understanding of what you’re putting into your body the most. Change one thing, like your lipstick, or your mouthwash, or your deodorant.” And it can all be done on a budget, she adds.

I think my face looks different when I gain three pounds or have a cold. I was sick last week and I swear I looked all puffy from that, so I believe her that she hasn’t had anything done. Also I believe her that when you eat better your face looks different. (Or when you go on and off birth control. I hope she’s ok in her current relationship.)

In terms of her new endorsement deal, I use Tom’s of Maine deodorant because I’m sensitive to perfume and I’ve heard bad things about aluminum-based deodorants. (Apparently there’s not a lot of scientific evidence for that. Also this is not a paid post but if Tom’s wants to send me some free deodorant I would love that and talk them up.) I still use commercial toothpaste though. That’s good advice to just change one thing at a time, I’ve heard that for so many other changes you want to make in your life too, like with diet or exercise. I’ve never really wanted to give up the bad stuff, just have less of it. I’m that way about makeup and personal care too. I may be chemically sensitive but I want good colors and makeup that lasts. I’ve never gone full health food store with my personal care. Sometimes I think about Lily Tomlin’s fate in The Incredible Shrinking Woman though, like these products have a cumulative effect and are gradually diminishing me. That was such a good movie.

Here’s that Toms of Maine spot. I would totally eat that Maine Blueberry Cobbler with aspartame. I’m still mad at Diet Pepsi for switching to sucralose.

This is entirely non-scientific and based solely on my personal experience, but since I stopped eating meat and dairy my skin has never looked better. It glows and Im ok with that!

I changed from Dove antiperspirant to natural deodorant and I’m so happy with it! Shoutout to Routine deodorant!! I’ve been slowly changing personal care products to ones that are less processed and have been thinking more about what goes into my body. You gotta take your body seriously when you hit your 30s!

    • Janet says:

I made the switch away from antipwrspirant, too, and I wish I had done it sooner. I used to have to use baking soda to exfoliate the gunk off my pits or risk destroying a razor. Now I don’t constantly stink, my shirts aren’t damaged by build up, and I can freshen up by simply wiping my underarms with a cloth. Absolutely life changing.

    • Lex says:

My sister and I make paste deodorant in her thermomix and it is great! I was getting dermatitis from antiperspirant but it also wasnt super effective – Id get a musty stank.

Love natural deodorant! Regardless of the fact that nothing is medically proven yet, I don’t see how plugging pores with metals to avoid sweating (which is a normal and important physiological function) can be healthy.

Making our own is also much more environmentally friendly – we reuse containers so no landfill waste!

Giving up animal products has changed my skin for the better. Well, not just my skin; my body and mind too.

She looks shiny and plastiky to me, without nary a wrinkle and a stiff forehead. Then I checked wiki and she’s only 30, so I suppose it could be all natural. I assumed looking at the photos that she was more like 40 something

It’s 2018. Nips, tucks, injections, and fillers are totally common place with celebs and everyone else. Stop with the panic lies.

    • Eliza says:

It’s semantics. Lasers and dermabration, needling etc are all non injected treatments.

Chemical free and purple potatoes cure all.

So I’ve went back & forth with natural deodorants. I love them but I have intense workouts & have learned these do me no favors. I’ve tried the crystal rock & love that one the best. I’ve also diluted tea tree oil & sprayed that on after using the rock. Nothing seems to help. I’ve resorted to men’s deodorant & sometimes I still stink 🤷🏼‍♀️ I would love to live this natural lifestyle. But how does it work? Like actually WORK

    • OriginalLala says:

I use natural deos (I even used to make my own) and I have a few different ones that I use depending on activity and season. I like Tom’s and Desert Essence for days when I’m not very active or sweaty and I love the Green Beaver Company’s deos for more active days or summer days, it’s really good. I also find keeping my pits shaved helps with odor when using natural deodorant. I’ve used them for over a decade, and Im a sweaty lady and I think it’s a matter of finding the right one and also accepting that sometimes out of the blue one will stop working for me and I need to try new ones.

    • Jen says:

I’ve tried a bunch of natural deodorants and this one works the best! Goes on just like a solid stick deodorant:

    • Anners says:

I’ve had really good luck with native deodorant. May favourite is the sea salt and sage – I haven’t had a stink problem, although I’ve had to reapply after a workout.

Honestly, aside from going to early 20s to late 20s, changing hair color to a darker/warmer shade, I don’t see a change in her face. Nothing so drastic it can’t be explained by good skincare and eating healthy foods. It’s not like the Kardashians like, these lips are natural and my butt makes me cry every day. Yeah, cry all the way to the bank because there are starving kids in Africa who will never understand the luxury of expendable income.

  9. SWP says:

This reminds me of the Streisand effect.

  10. LNH says:

I don’t care what products you use or what diet you have, it doesn’t change the shape of your nose. Less than a decade ago, she had a more bulbous nose. Anyone who remembers her from the film Thirteen knows how big her nose used to be.

    • Mel M says:

Idk, when I’ve looked at pictures of me from middle school my nose looks wider and I haven’t gotten a nose job, it’s weird. My cheeks were fuller and and i just had more fat on my face period. I would like to get a nose job though but because it’s too long for my liking and I have a deviated septum. My left nostril is so much thinner and hard to breath through. But it’s not like she has this cute little button nose so what was the point of a nose job?

  11. BANANIE says:

I think she’s giving good advice but that she’s not being entirely honest. I agree about her face in Thirteen.

My favorite part of what she said was about doing this one thing at a time. Sometimes celebs and people get all in your face about lifestyle changes and I like that she’s suggesting people experiment and doesn’t try to make people feel bad

  12. Ae says:

For those looking for a natural deodorant, I would like to recommend “Schmidts”. I could never find one that didn’t make me stinky by midday and this one is it!! The scents are natural and many of them are gender neutral. You can even get it at Costco in a three pack.

    • dumbledork says:

I love Schmidt’s! My Target sells it now too. I tried quite a few natural deodorants, and this one is the best.

  13. Renee says:

I loved The Incredible Shrinking Woman movie. “Galaxy Glue, Galaxy Glue”……loved the movie theme song too.

    • L84Tea says:

When I scrolled down and that picture appeared on my screen, I about died. I LOVED that movie!! I still sing “Little Bar of Soap” all the darn time.

  14. DesertReal says:

    She…looks the same.

    • Eva says:

That’s because all the pictures here are ‘after’ pics, she had the nose job way before them. A google search makes the nose job undeniable, I don’t know why these celebrities think we are stupid.
