Emma Stone in bronze Louis Vuitton at the Oscars: stunning or too structural?

The Annual Academy Awards Arrivals

Emma Stone goes too often to the pastel/neutral well when dressing for big red carpets. I know she cares about fashion, and I know she pays attention to it, but I was expecting another sparkly nothingburger gown in pale pink or beige this year. She surprised me with this Louis Vuitton. She has a massive LV contract (big $$$), and they’re clearly customizing stuff especially for her. I wonder if this gown was her idea or their idea. The thing is… I love bronze. I love the reptilian “scale” pattern. I would have absolutely adored this gown if the shoulders had been normal. The “winged” structure just upsets me. It cheapens the look and makes it gimmicky. Also: she did not put ANY effort into her styling. She just slicked back her darker hair and stuck on some simple earrings.

Laura Harrier got to attend the Oscars because she had a supporting role in BlacKkKlansman (she played a young Black Panther activist). She was good in the film. I first put her name to her face because of her Louis Vuitton contract – she’s one of the muses/models for LV, and she spent a lot of time on with another LV muse, Justin Theroux, last summer. I don’t know if they’re still happening. Anyway, LV made her this gown made out of entirely sustainable materials. Several women were doing the “eco challenge” on the red carpet. I get it, even though I never think these eco dresses are particularly noteworthy sartorially. Also: the necklace doesn’t go with the gown AT ALL.

I don’t care for the shoulders.

Laura Harrier looked lovely in that cut, though the color was a little meh

  2. Caitlin Bruce says:

One of the worst looks ever on Emma. Looks like she has thousands of dead cockroaches on her. The styling is fine but too simple for the dress. Laura looks good. Nothing special but good nonetheless

  3. Milla says:

Laura is drop dead gorgeous. So she can wear whatever. I like the blue, maybe a bit more structured cut. But that face..

    Emma looks bored.

    • Carol says:

Right? I don’t even know who Laura Harrier is but when I saw her on screen she totally stood out. I don’t know if that dress would have looked any better on anyone else. She gorgeous plain and simple.

  4. Lulu says:

I like this dress. It’s a good choice for someone who knows they’re not going to win – simple, yet the shoulders give it an edge. I like her styling too. I like that she doesn’t need to be too ‘pretty’.

  5. BaeBae says:

Emma Stone does absolutely nothing for me. Always so boring.

  6. Ash says:

Yea loved Emma’s look the shoulder were the look,if she did anything more it would’ve been overkill.

  7. Becks1 says:

I didnt love Emma’s look at all. It was one of the few where I saw it on the red carpet and thought “oh honey, what are you wearing?” I dont know if it was the pattern, the shoulders, or what. But it fell flat for me.

  8. Miss M says:

Loved Emma’s look. Her dress was incredible especially in motion.

  9. Loretta says:

Emma Stone’s dress is tragic. She hasn’t a good sense of style. Mess

  10. RoyalBlue says:

I loved the dress for Emma. She has the body for it and carries it well. You could see it was made for her. She keeps her makeup and hair simple so the story is always about the dress.

  11. Case says:

Emma was actually my favorite look of the night, but I found the entire red carpet to be a bit uninteresting this year. No real standout looks.

    • Coz' says:

Same! The structure and fabric are unique.
Most of the other gowns are boring, unimaginative and safe. Now Emma’s dress : that’s couture!

  12. Kebbie says:

Emma’s dress reminds me of Armani Prive a lot, I think that’s why I like it. She was my best dressed of the night hands down, though there wasn’t a whole lot of competition.

  13. Marianne Hord says:

I dont like Emma’s look. She looks like a grilled steak. And the makeup and the dark hair, washes her out. Laura looked really pretty though.

  14. Avamae says:

    80ies Alexis of Denverclan Dress.
Or maybe she saved all the wrappings of her favorite chocolate?
All tiny little praline wrappings, done up into one dress.

Second one looks pretty, pretty girl, pretty dress, pretty necklace.

  15. tealily says:

I love Emma’s dress! I think she looks incredible.

  16. Themummy says:

Emma’s dress looks terrible in photos, but in motion I actually really loved it.

  17. lucy2 says:

I like everything about Emma’s look, including the minimal styling, except for the weird shoulders.
I would really like Laura’s if it was either darker, or the light blue with out the embellishments. Something about the combination isn’t working for me.

  18. Lucy says:

Loved Laura’s look! Didn’t really loved Emma’s, but it was nice to see her trying something different. Did you see her when Olivia was announced as the winner? She was beaming!

  19. Renee says:

Laura Harrier is gorgous. Emma doesn’t impress….as usual.

  20. Kerfuffle says:

I really liked Laura’s dress (and LOVED her necklace) but her manicure clashed. It was distracting in her red carpet interview because it was the one element that threw the look into ‘too much going on’

  21. JennyJenny says:

I hate that red and green necklace with Laura Harriers gown!
All I could think of is it looks like something you’d wear at Christmas.

    Emma was Em-meh…

  22. KeishaMarie says:

I like that Emma tries to be different and not cutesie. This dress looked better in motion (otherwise reminds me of the creature in The Shape of Water). But I hate the hair…she always gets that wrong – like no effort, looks like gym hair, just tied back and away she went.

  23. atlantic says:

Simple earrings and makeup is key with Emma’s dress. Love the colour of her dress.

That baby blue colour of Laura’s dress just cheapens it. And her necklace makes no sense.

  24. Jessica says:

Could these looks be any uglier? Jesus.

  25. Anare says:

I thought Emma Stone looked cool. The dress is sharp and her spare styling is perfect.
