When I wrote about Scarlett Johansson’s appearance this past weekend at Comic Con, I was more focused on the Black Widow news and how Scarlett “I Should Be Allowed To Play Any Tree I Want” Johansson was happy to see so much diversity in Marvel’s future projects. I actually sort of forgot that Scarlett and Colin Jost got engaged in May, and this was her first big appearance since the engagement announcement. Scarlett has been married twice before (Ryan Reynolds, and that French dude Romain) and she had different kinds of engagement rings with both men – Ryan gave her a round solitaire diamond and Romain gave her a vintage Art Deco ring. Colin Jost chose to go for something very… different. That is, if you believe that the diamond ring ScarJo wore at Comic Con was her actual engagement ring. If you choose to believe that, know that Jost gave her a BROWN diamond. Ugh.
Scarlett Johansson has finally unveiled her engagement ring — and it’s one huge rock. “Saturday Night Live” co-head writer Colin Jost proposed to the actress, 32, back in May, but she waited to reveal the enormous colored diamond until Saturday’s Marvel Studios panel during Comic-Con 2019, where she wore a sexy, semi-sheer jumpsuit for the announcement of the upcoming “Black Widow” movie.
“Scarlett’s 11-carat, light brown diamond looks to be a spin on two stone shapes, mixing an oval and pear to create an elegant egg shape. We can estimate a ring like this to be priced over $400,000,” Alicia Davis, Shane Co.‘s VP of Merchandise, told Page Six Style.
“Scarlett’s ring, though truly one-of-a-kind in style and design, is a great reflection of the elongated shape trend that we’re seeing with everyday brides,” Davis added. “Ovals and pear shapes are two of the most popular right now because of the way they lengthen the finger, creating a more slender finger and larger-looking diamond.”
Jewelry site The Adventurine reported that the unique design, which features a black band at the base of the stone, is likely the work of Taffin‘s James de Givenchy, the nephew of legendary designer Hubert de Givenchy.
People will just wear any old sh-t if the label is right, I guess. If I saw a black banded ring with a brown diamond, I would think that it was just being worn as a cocktail ring, not as someone’s engagement ring. But this is Scarlett Johansson we’re talking about, and hey, it is her third marriage. Maybe she decided she had already done the traditional white diamond ring thing and she wanted something different.

Because she’s meta and we’re talking about it? Maybe it is the real deal, but I doubt he would pick it out, that ugly thing is all her.
You wear your engagement ring on your ring finger when you’re engaged, at least in the US. These days you’ll get a second ring (wedding band) to layer on top/underneath, but that’s just where they go.

I sort of love it too! I follow the designer on Instagram and his jewelry is so cool and funky. My favorite ring that I’ve worn for 20 years is boulder opal in a setting that looks like a piece of sculpture. I consider jewelry like this to be wearable art.

I agree. Theres something really really beautiful about the shape and the shade – I just think if it were on a high polish gold band or a satin (non shiny) gold band, it would be sick! or a pave diamond band. the black just flattens it for me.

Amy-I love the brown diamond, too! My own engagement ring is a Swiss sky blue Topaz, that’s encircled with tiny black diamonds. The band is white gold. I just love unusually colored/contrasted stones, and I think white diamonds look too standard and generic. If this brown one had a silver or white gold ring, it would be even more striking than it now is.

Scarlett’s age is very easy to verify because she has a nonfamous twin. He is 34, so she is 34. the article just mistated her age.

I’ve read what those SNL ppl make and it’s actually not much at all. Considering he’s not some big movie star, making big paychecks, I highly doubt he was able to afford a ring like that. The sheer size of that stone is doing the talking and due to its cut I think it doesn’t matter that it is a “fancy colour” stone. That is one big sparkler on her finger.
Diamonds are the worst kind of stone. Their wealth is SO overinflated it’s hilarious (rarity usually equal cost, diamonds are relatively common and easy to collect), it’s the societal norm to have them as statuses of wealth or extravagance, plus the whole industry is based around not only conflict zones but extracting wealth from the communities that hold it.

It’s true! I wrote a term paper on diamond mining in southern Africa. De Beers literally tosses diamonds into the ocean to create the “rarity”. Also diamond miners are treated so terribly and, have terrible working conditions and live in insanely impoverished conditions. Engagement rings weren’t even a thing until the 1920s.
Exactly. Even supposed conflict-free diamonds aren’t decent, but people are happy to get them because they don’t want to think they’re propagating the problem.
Same as wedding dresses were never white until people wanted to follow Queen Victoria’s lead (because we all like to look like the people who stood at the head of the British Empire’s cruelty).
I like the band, it’s interesting, but the diamond is way too big, imo. I think it would have looked better with something smaller, maybe oval, and set horizontally instead of vertically so it can follow the groove of the band. At the moment, the way the diamond is set makes it look like it should be two different rings, it’s not cohesive.

I don’t know what it is in these last years with “chocolate” and “black” diamonds. 25 years ago — those stones were solely considered “industrial diamonds.” Meaning, they weren’t really used as jewelry, let alone engagement jewelry. These were “the worker stones” — the ones businesses used for grinding down materials and polishing metals. So it’s interesting to me how they are being marketed now. “Give her chocolates!” Um, no. My prejudice is showing — I can’t get past it, these are not great looking stones to me. And the black band is so funereal.
You know who has a lot of great engagement rings? Jennifer Lopez. All of them are beautiful, and seem to fit her larger than life persona.

I agree – my DH worked for years at jewelry store and laughs at the “chocolate diamond” marketing. He said those diamonds were considered trash and no one wanted them. Interesting how a good marketing campaign can turn things around….

Aww, I have a chocolate diamond and white diamond set for my engagement/wedding rings. I don’t know shit about diamonds, I just loved the look of it. I didn’t know that about chocolate diamonds, that’s interesting. It doesn’t ruin it for me. I sometimes think I should learn more about nice jewelry but it’s not me. I’m not much of a jewelry person. *shrug*
oh, that is definitely true. but some brown diamonds can be very beautiful. Black diamonds might as well be onyx IMO, I don’t know why anyone would pay for a diamond that can’t do what a diamond is known for – refracting and dispersing light.

My husband bought me a yellow diamond necklace years ago and at first I didn’t like it just in principle. I think it was just a weird internal bias I had on what a diamond should look like. But actually, it was a gorgeous stone and so unique. I treasure it now and love it. It catches the light in such a lovely, colorful way.
And all these years later, I don’t do diamonds anyway. The stone I wear now is a very inexpensive white topaz and it’s beautiful. And I have a bunch of cubic zirconia that I adore too. I don’t care about expensive gems. I just want sparkle to catch my eye and the option to switch out my rings from time to time.
But that said, the shape of that ring is ugly ugly ugly.
