Scarlett Johansson’s new engagement ring is a brown diamond with a black band?

When I wrote about Scarlett Johansson’s appearance this past weekend at Comic Con, I was more focused on the Black Widow news and how Scarlett “I Should Be Allowed To Play Any Tree I Want” Johansson was happy to see so much diversity in Marvel’s future projects. I actually sort of forgot that Scarlett and Colin Jost got engaged in May, and this was her first big appearance since the engagement announcement. Scarlett has been married twice before (Ryan Reynolds, and that French dude Romain) and she had different kinds of engagement rings with both men – Ryan gave her a round solitaire diamond and Romain gave her a vintage Art Deco ring. Colin Jost chose to go for something very… different. That is, if you believe that the diamond ring ScarJo wore at Comic Con was her actual engagement ring. If you choose to believe that, know that Jost gave her a BROWN diamond. Ugh.

Scarlett Johansson has finally unveiled her engagement ring — and it’s one huge rock. “Saturday Night Live” co-head writer Colin Jost proposed to the actress, 32, back in May, but she waited to reveal the enormous colored diamond until Saturday’s Marvel Studios panel during Comic-Con 2019, where she wore a sexy, semi-sheer jumpsuit for the announcement of the upcoming “Black Widow” movie.

“Scarlett’s 11-carat, light brown diamond looks to be a spin on two stone shapes, mixing an oval and pear to create an elegant egg shape. We can estimate a ring like this to be priced over $400,000,” Alicia Davis, Shane Co.‘s VP of Merchandise, told Page Six Style.

“Scarlett’s ring, though truly one-of-a-kind in style and design, is a great reflection of the elongated shape trend that we’re seeing with everyday brides,” Davis added. “Ovals and pear shapes are two of the most popular right now because of the way they lengthen the finger, creating a more slender finger and larger-looking diamond.”

Jewelry site The Adventurine reported that the unique design, which features a black band at the base of the stone, is likely the work of Taffin‘s James de Givenchy, the nephew of legendary designer Hubert de Givenchy.

People will just wear any old sh-t if the label is right, I guess. If I saw a black banded ring with a brown diamond, I would think that it was just being worn as a cocktail ring, not as someone’s engagement ring. But this is Scarlett Johansson we’re talking about, and hey, it is her third marriage. Maybe she decided she had already done the traditional white diamond ring thing and she wanted something different.

    I’m going with cocktail ring.

    • ChillyWilly says:

But why would she wear it on her ring finger when she is engaged?

      • Eliza says:

Because she’s meta and we’re talking about it? Maybe it is the real deal, but I doubt he would pick it out, that ugly thing is all her.

      • Liz says:

You wear your engagement ring on your ring finger when you’re engaged, at least in the US. These days you’ll get a second ring (wedding band) to layer on top/underneath, but that’s just where they go.

  2. ChillyWilly says:

Oh wow, that might be the ugliest engagement ring I have ever seen. I actually like colored diamonds but that black setting is really fug.

  3. Citresse says:

Well at least she can do some gardening with it on!

  4. Chef Grace says:

A different setting and it would be nce.

  5. Case says:

I laughed at “elegant egg shape.”

  6. Erinn says:

I sort of love it? I mean, it’s not my taste, but I love how insanely different it is. I’m all for non traditional rings.

    • Tiffany says:

I can see it. This is her third engagement. Why not change it up.

    • Kateeeee says:

I like the style despite myself. But the stone’s a little huge for my taste.

    • BengalCat😻 says:

I sort of love it too! I follow the designer on Instagram and his jewelry is so cool and funky. My favorite ring that I’ve worn for 20 years is boulder opal in a setting that looks like a piece of sculpture. I consider jewelry like this to be wearable art.

    • BeanieBean says:

I like it, too, largely because I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

    • Case says:

I kinda do too. It’s her third engagement. She has an edgy style and doesn’t strike me as a girly girl who needs a traditional ring. It works. And it’s kinda space-y, which is fun.

    • sequinedheart says:

I agree. Theres something really really beautiful about the shape and the shade – I just think if it were on a high polish gold band or a satin (non shiny) gold band, it would be sick! or a pave diamond band. the black just flattens it for me.

    • Kitten says:

Same. I also LOVE non-traditional rings and while I wouldn’t choose this for myself, I’m really loving how different it is. It’s modern but has kind of an art deco vibe to it.

  7. Kebbie says:

Are we sure she didn’t just wear it on loan from the designer for the event? I mean if they’re advertising it on their Instagram page…

  8. Deedee says:

    That’s really cool, actually.

    • Amy says:

      I love it!

      • maryna says:

Amy-I love the brown diamond, too! My own engagement ring is a Swiss sky blue Topaz, that’s encircled with tiny black diamonds. The band is white gold. I just love unusually colored/contrasted stones, and I think white diamonds look too standard and generic. If this brown one had a silver or white gold ring, it would be even more striking than it now is.

  9. elimaeby says:

I always forget that Liz Taylor 2.0 and I are the same age. She’s already on marriage #3?! Damn.

    • Paleokifaru says:

That article says she’s 32. I’m fairly certain she’s at least 34 (Wiki says 34 but I could swear she’s 2 years older than that and the age has been shaved in articles in the last few years). @kaiser or @celebitchy do you know her age?

      • Sassbr says:

ScarJo is definitely shaving-I always think Rihanna and Beyonce are doing the same thing.

      • elimaeby says:

Thank you! I feel like I remember when she first became a big name, “Lost in Translation”, probably? I was in high school, and I remember her being early twenties.

Glad I’m not crazy. About this, anyway.

      • Erinn says:

WHAT. She’s not 32 is she? I’m 29, and I thought she was at least 5 years older than I am. Maybe because she has kind of a huskier voice I just thought she was older than she is?

      • Lightpurple says:

Judging from how old she was when she made her first film according to IMDB, she’s 34 and will turn 35 in November.

      • Algernon says:

Scarlett’s age is very easy to verify because she has a nonfamous twin. He is 34, so she is 34. the article just mistated her age.

      • lucy2 says:

She’s definitely 34. But honestly I would have guessed older, seems like she’s been around forever.

      • Starkiller says:

That’s the main thing I took from this article. I’m 33, and ScarJo definitely used to be older than me. 🤨

  10. Faithmobile says:

I like the ring so much better than the human wearing it.

  11. Sassbr says:

I don’t like to ring shame people but that is…something. I don’t even know how you get around to seeing a ring like that and thinking it’s the perfect way to say “marry me.”

Like what, he was designing it with a jeweler and he was like,”Well, she keeps going on and on about wanting to be a tree, so I’m thinking, why not get my baby an acorn?”

  12. Lizzie says:

colin jost is a brown diamond….you expect him to be cute but when you open the box its a piece of shit

  13. Mignionette says:

When you’ve been married this many times, you can start experimenting …

  14. Stacy Dresden says:

    I love it

  15. Lisa says:

    I actually like it.

  16. Pixie says:

To each their own but that is just…SO ugly…and SO expensive.

  17. Mab's A'Mabbin says:

That ring is super deco, and I love it. But non-traditional is my middle name lol.

  18. Cee says:

    That setting belongs in Mordor.

  19. Sarah B says:

Trying to prove how diverse she is.

    • Cheynez says:

I am not sure she tries to prove anything with that one. Cause she does a lot of other things that don’t say “proof of something” either. Google her tattoos.

  20. Mia4s says:

Well, soon to be husband number three is trying to stand out. I kind of understand.

I just feel for her future fourth husband; he’s going to have to be really creative! 😏

  21. tcbc says:

I hope her next engagement ring is better than this one. Personally, I like her second one the best so far.

  22. xdanix says:

Bless you, Kaiser! Scarlett “I should be allowed to play any tree I want” Johansson- I’m HOWLING 😂👏 This is how I’m always going to wish she was written up as! Oh, I needed that laugh today!

  23. Winnie Cooper’s Mom says:

I’ve read what those SNL ppl make and it’s actually not much at all. Considering he’s not some big movie star, making big paychecks, I highly doubt he was able to afford a ring like that. Unless he comes from a wealthy family. Just wondering outloud if she pulled a Jessica Simpson and bought her own ring for him to propose with.

  24. sommolierlady says:

Why get married again when you kind of suck at it.

  25. Evil Owl says:

Call me crazy, but I love the ring! It’s unique, non traditional and she has the edginess to pull it off

    • Cheynez says:

Upon closer inspection I started to like that ring, too.
Yep, she is a lot more non-traditional. I find it hard to describe her but perhaps rock and punk with some romanticism?

The sheer size of that stone is doing the talking and due to its cut I think it doesn’t matter that it is a “fancy colour” stone. That is one big sparkler on her finger.

  26. Mei says:

Diamonds are the worst kind of stone. Their wealth is SO overinflated it’s hilarious (rarity usually equal cost, diamonds are relatively common and easy to collect), it’s the societal norm to have them as statuses of wealth or extravagance, plus the whole industry is based around not only conflict zones but extracting wealth from the communities that hold it.

Not to mention that diamond engagement rings themselves were only ever a marketing ploy that literally everyone fell for, created because there was such an excess of diamonds that a new way to sell them was needed. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/02/how-an-ad-campaign-invented-the-diamond-engagement-ring/385376/

All that being said, the diamond colour is pretty nice, but the setting looks so insecure to hold such a large stone!

    • Hotsauceinmybag says:

It’s true! I wrote a term paper on diamond mining in southern Africa. De Beers literally tosses diamonds into the ocean to create the “rarity”. Also diamond miners are treated so terribly and, have terrible working conditions and live in insanely impoverished conditions. Engagement rings weren’t even a thing until the 1920s.

      • Mei says:

Exactly. Even supposed conflict-free diamonds aren’t decent, but people are happy to get them because they don’t want to think they’re propagating the problem.

Same as wedding dresses were never white until people wanted to follow Queen Victoria’s lead (because we all like to look like the people who stood at the head of the British Empire’s cruelty).

  27. Lena says:

I like the band, it’s interesting, but the diamond is way too big, imo. I think it would have looked better with something smaller, maybe oval, and set horizontally instead of vertically so it can follow the groove of the band. At the moment, the way the diamond is set makes it look like it should be two different rings, it’s not cohesive.

  28. Hotsauceinmybag says:

    Fug. Just like her personality

  29. asdfa says:

I’m going against the grain – I LOVE nearly every piece Taffin creates and I love this one too.

  30. Fluffy Princess says:

I don’t know what it is in these last years with “chocolate” and “black” diamonds. 25 years ago — those stones were solely considered “industrial diamonds.” Meaning, they weren’t really used as jewelry, let alone engagement jewelry. These were “the worker stones” — the ones businesses used for grinding down materials and polishing metals. So it’s interesting to me how they are being marketed now. “Give her chocolates!” Um, no. My prejudice is showing — I can’t get past it, these are not great looking stones to me. And the black band is so funereal.

You know who has a lot of great engagement rings? Jennifer Lopez. All of them are beautiful, and seem to fit her larger than life persona.

    • Tiffany :) says:

In the sexual harassment article about the systemic issues at Zales/Kay/Jared, they said that the “chocolate” spin was just a way to get people to buy industrial diamonds. You are exactly correct!

      https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/23/magazine/kay-jewelry-sexual-harassment.html

    • megan says:

I agree – my DH worked for years at jewelry store and laughs at the “chocolate diamond” marketing. He said those diamonds were considered trash and no one wanted them. Interesting how a good marketing campaign can turn things around….

      • dj says:

That’s what I thought too…that brown stones were used industrially. Thanks for confirmation.

    • Cheynez says:

The size of that stone is doing all the talking.

    • Joanna says:

Aww, I have a chocolate diamond and white diamond set for my engagement/wedding rings. I don’t know shit about diamonds, I just loved the look of it. I didn’t know that about chocolate diamonds, that’s interesting. It doesn’t ruin it for me. I sometimes think I should learn more about nice jewelry but it’s not me. I’m not much of a jewelry person. *shrug*

    • asdfa says:

oh, that is definitely true. but some brown diamonds can be very beautiful. Black diamonds might as well be onyx IMO, I don’t know why anyone would pay for a diamond that can’t do what a diamond is known for – refracting and dispersing light.

  31. Kate says:

“…because of the way they lengthen the finger, creating a more slender finger…”

NOPE! no, not doing that, we’re not worrying about fingers being skinny. I say no.

  32. Carol says:

It’s not my taste for sure! But good luck to her.

  33. TheMummy says:

My husband bought me a yellow diamond necklace years ago and at first I didn’t like it just in principle. I think it was just a weird internal bias I had on what a diamond should look like. But actually, it was a gorgeous stone and so unique. I treasure it now and love it. It catches the light in such a lovely, colorful way.

And all these years later, I don’t do diamonds anyway. The stone I wear now is a very inexpensive white topaz and it’s beautiful. And I have a bunch of cubic zirconia that I adore too. I don’t care about expensive gems. I just want sparkle to catch my eye and the option to switch out my rings from time to time.

But that said, the shape of that ring is ugly ugly ugly.

  34. lucy2 says:

    Do. Not. Like.

  35. leena says:

Well at least she probably won’t have to wear it that long if history is anything to go by!

    Mieouw

  36. Kokoloco says:

Looks like a an old fingernail that belonged to a now deceased smoker.

  37. Cheynez says:

ScarJo is a lot more rock and punk that most other Hollywood A-list ladies.
I think it does work on her. It looks like a yellow diamond or some diamond beetle that landed on her finger. Very unique.

  38. TheHeat says:

    I kind of like it.
I hate the “rules” about engagement rings, anyway. It was a marketing ploy about 100 years ago that stuck. That’s all.

  39. tuille says:

I really like it. The cut is wonderful – so sparkly! I’ve always preferred colored stones. Either give me white, D-G, or a color.
I didn’t know she has torso tats.

  40. Mash says:

that ring is ATROOSH —- its like girllllll you are on your 3rd marriage by 34 just chill and have a simple band like Amanda Seyfried.

The black band….what is that black gold….a silicon band…lord why LOL

  41. K says:

    It’s shaped like a fingernail/fingertip. Ew.
