Back in March, Ariana Grande said some smart things about how her fans needed to stay home and be safe and follow all of the lockdown guidance. Ari practiced what she preached too – she stayed at home in LA, with a small group of friends and a guy named Dalton Gomez. Ari and Dalton began dating probably around January, and they went into lockdown together. That kind of thing can make or break a relationship, as we’ve seen. In Ari’s case, it seemed to “make” their relationship, and Ari and Dalton are now engaged.
Ariana Grande is a bride-to-be! On Sunday, the singer, 27, showed off her new diamond engagement ring in photos shared on Instagram. “Forever n then some,” Grande captioned the series of images, which included a close look at her engagement ring.
“They couldn’t be happier, they’re just so excited. This is a happy time for them, both sets of parents are thrilled,” a source tells PEOPLE of Grande and Dalton Gomez, who is a real estate agent.
I was trying to remember if this is Ari’s second or third engagement. She was definitely engaged to Pete Davidson (a mess!) but was she engaged to Mac Miller? I don’t think so, but I’m not 100% on that and I can’t find anything concrete in the gossip archives. Anyway, this engagement seems like it’s on much more solid ground than the Pete Davidson thing. I hope Dalton is a good guy.
As for the ring… I’ll be nice for a moment and say that the diamond is beautiful, really and truly. The diamond is so beautiful, the terrible setting makes me really mad. What is with the “crooked” setting and then the pearl? I’m sorry but this isn’t a great engagement ring. I feel the same way about this that I felt about Emma Stone’s engagement ring – Ari’s going to bang that pearl into everything. Just take that diamond and reset it into a normal solitaire setting. (Also, I would have thought that Ari would be 100% pro-pink diamonds.)

Awful ring but if she likes it…wishing them all the best
Came here to say this. Not my taste but if she likes it, she likes it
It’s cooler than most -lacksBrideGene

Forget about the ring… how about her fugly hands and fingers tattoos. WTF?!?
Yup…hate the ring, but damn…those tats!! They don’t even look well done (I mean…if you’re gonna have ’em, do ’em well).
Looks like a three year old that got ahold of some markers and drew all over their hands. Really unfortunate.
my tattoo artist says hand tats don’t hold up well due to the amount of washing. it distorts and fades them.
My thoughts too… they look like prison tattoos.
TBH, love the ring! Its so “Wabi Sabi”…its about imperfection using perfect things. That pearl looks like an Ise pearl, one akin to Mikimoto, and the diamond is gorgeous…and the setting is stunning because of its imperfection.
I love it too! But I also love ScarJos ring so what do I know 😂
Lisa, what a perfect comparison! I love the ring as well… it’s perfectly imperfect.
I like it in theory. But I love the look of pearls – I just don’t like that you have to be SOOOOO careful with them. Having one in your e-ring is a bit of a gamble if you plan to wear it daily. Luckily, she is plenty wealthy enough to swap it out if needed.
I also kind of liked scar jos because it was different. I get bored of seeing the same thing over and over, but at the same time I still do like the classics. I’m more classic with a twist in my tastes.
I love it! I’m tired of cookie-cutter solitaires.
Sammme. I actually saw it and went omg I love it!
Count me in on the love it side! That is one gorgeous diamond & I love how it’s different.
I like it, too! It’s kind of how I feel about fashion: if you have a lot of money, you kind of owe it to the rest of us to play around and do something interesting, at least.
It’s too bad because it’s a beautiful diamond. Seeing the diamond tilted and askew that way just isn’t my thing. And the pearl…as everyone says, pearls are delicate for an engagement ring.
That off kilter diamond is driving the Virgo in me right up the wall.
It’s been reported that the pearl may be one her grandmother gave to her. If not, pearls have special meaning to her. It was designed by her fiance and she is reportedly very happy with it. Until relatively recently pearls were extensively used in engagement rings, because they were rare and precious.
Oh here we go again… 5..4..3… and how long it will last
Honestly that was my reaction too. I know that someone will comment that their aunt got married after five failed engagements,to a guy she had known for six days and now they’ve been together for forty years and have a lot of grandchildren and pets and when you know you know but I would not be surprised if they broke up in six months. I love Ariana but she seems like someone who is in love with love and they actually haven’t even been together for that long.
LMFAOOOOOOOO thank you for that laugh
Lol that’s so true!
So yeah I had a whirlwind romance in my mid twenties and got married with in a year. That all ended in divorce and was my ´starter marriage´ which if Ariana gets to the aisle I’m pretty sure that’s what this will be too.
yeah, that ring is really ugly. Hope she’s happy and that this one works out. maybe she’s a long engagement sort of girl?
That’s a no from me.
I find these types of engagements so interesting. It’s so impulsive. I’m Irish and we tend to get married later here (a cultural hangover from divorce being illegal here until the late 90s) so the idea of just getting engaged on a whim seems really odd to me. But they’re young and wealthy and it’s been a tough year so congrats, I guess
So many quick engagements lately. Why can’t people just date for a few years? What’s the rush?
COVID
Eh, we were engaged after dating eight months.Married eight months later. Celebrated our 25th anniversary last August. Sometimes it works!
You are the exception not the rule.
It’s okay if she bangs the pearl against everything. It’s not like she will have to wear it very long. This won’t last. The diamond is beautiful, though.
the diamond is breathtaking
love the setting – bad at first glance but upon closer look, I kinda get it. him not being a public figure makes me optimistic about this, although this does feel a tiny bit fast. then again, we don’t know them, could be a really solid relationship, esp. since it says here the parents are on board. wishing them all the best
Love it. She can buy a normal ring any day of the week so getting something timeless isn’t really important. It’s fun and young, so why not? Also I much prefer this one over the pear shaped monstrosity from Pete Davidson.
I was given a pearl ring by my parents many years ago. I lost and replaced the pearl twice. I finally just put my birthstone in there although it didnt look nearly as nice. IIRC, the jeweler said something about pearls being hard to stay put or something. In any case, I can’t get past those hand tattoos to even care about the ring. Congrats to them both. As someone above said, it’s been a rough year.
I feel the same way about the hand tattoos. It looks like she drew all over herself when she was bored in math class.
That’s how I feel about a lot of tattoos like that – they look like random doodles, not something thought out and well placed. Also, I couldn’t stand having something all over my hands like that, but to each their own.
I love pearls and wear a pearl ring every day. I sort of like this, although I don’t think I could wear it. I do think it looks great with all the little finger tattoos- a classic shape would seem mismatched, while that ring with the single pearl cuddling up to that huge diamond like that sort of matches the individuality of the wearer. Good luck to them!
Especially because they are monochromatic. More doodling than art.
They look like they’re bleeding, too. I feel like in a few more years she’ll just look like she’s got random ink smudges instead of the designs she started with.
Pearls are set by using epoxy in the drill hole and then adhering it to a peg. That way of setting will never be aa secure as drilling a seat and and setting in either prongs or a bezel ( which is how other gems are set.)
I hate pearls in engagement rings. As a gemologist I think it’s a waste of a pretty pearl. Your engagement amd wedding set gets so much more daily wear and abuse than other jewelry and pearls are just too soft and delicate to put up with that. If you don’t want a diamond, that’s fine but I’d then go for a sapphire or an alexandrite ( though nice ones of those are rare and expensive) because they can handle the abuse- not as well as a diamond but better than anything else. Also for the love of all that is holy, don’t sleep in ypur jewelery!!
I’m a pearl specialist, and I agree with everything you said. I have a couple of pearl rings but they are not my everyday engagement ring. They are only for special occasions when I’m not banging my hangs into everything, or cooking (vinegar and acids are death to pearls) or putting my hands into cleaning solutions.
Love hearing from professionals on this stuff.
Any tips on looking for sapphires for engagement rings?
Loved learning about this! So many talented commenters here!
I never take off my tennis bracelet, or a gold and multi-colored sapphires bracelet…and I rarely take out my (diamond) studs except to clean. I also never take off my diamond heart pendant, except when I had to have surgery (it has my late mom’s engagement stone set in, so I like having it close to *my* heart…sentimental, I know 😊 )
Why shouldn’t you sleep in your jewelry? Seriously asking. I’ve never heard this before,
Why not sleep in your ring?
My personal feeling is that at night your body should be unrestricted and able to relax and sleep. So I always remove jewelry. In terms of rings, I believe if your fingers swell at night it could constrict blood flow. I *always* take those off. A necklace could get caught and broken. Earrings could come off and be lost, or could be caught on the blanket and pulled.
Your sheets basically act like sandpaper to your gold and wears it way faster. Also of you have any slightly lifted prongs it will pull on them and can pull the prong up and unseat the diamond. You especially see this in pave style rings where the prongs are so bitty.
So interesting! My wedding ring is a tad too tight – that thing is never coming off again.
Cleak, any tips on cleaning green amethysts? That’s the stone on my engagement ring; I am obsessed with it being shiny but just found out that ultrasound cleaners are bad for it! And the ole dishwashing liquid and soft toothbrush just doesn’t quite get under the setting the same way…
I really like it! But I like pearls. And anyway, “different” rings are trendy these days
The group of us at work this morning are ranting about why in the hell would you put a diamond that gorgeous in a setting like that?! Why not put the diamond in the middle, not crooked af, and flanked by pearls?
I saw something on Buzzfeed this morning that said a few years ago her grandma gave her a ring made with the pearl from her late grandpa’s tie clip. Not sure if it’s the same pearl, but if it is, at least there’s meaning to it.
Hate the ring
Best of luck to them both. I hope this one ends in laughter compared to her and Pete’s engagement
Eek, that’s bloody awful. Was the jeweller drunk?
I might be alone in this but I actually really like the ring. 😂 the diamond is beautiful and the pearl has personal meaning since its been in her family. Its a little unique but i do like it.
Me too! It’s different and not boring like regular engagemwnt rings
Hate the ring with a passion.
I think the ring is gorgeous but as @kaiser pointed out, impractical. I doubt she’ll wear it everyday or even all day when she does.
That ring is terrible. I have a feeling she won’t be wearing it long anyway.
I really like this ring and appreciate the unusual setting.
I do too! I think it’s beautiful and I like how unique it is. Plus Ari is so rich that’s she’s probably got a bunch of diamond rings already. She doesn’t need a plain solitaire ring.
The ring is ugly AF. I get that it’s all *modern* and uncommon with the crooked setting and pearl, but have people considered that the reason symmetrical designs are so common in the first place is because the human eye naturally finds symmetry appealing?
Geez, you people are terrible! Read about the ring – it was made from her grandfather’s tie clasp. It’s lovely.
I mean, it could have had the same lovely meaning if it hadn’t been been incorporated into such an odd design though, no?
I think it’s a pretty ring. I love pearls. I don’t know if i would want this engagement ring, but it suits her and is unique!
I am not quite as down on this engagement as others here. We have doubts because of that silliness with Pete Davidson, but the fact that he’s not famous and they’ve had tons of time to get to know each other in quarantine makes a big difference.
Just as a side note, thank you to Ariana for STAYING HOME. So few celebs have actually done this and set a good example for their fans.
I didn’t realize her hands were so inked. I’m a tattooed girl myself, so I’m 100% pro-tattoo. But hers look dreadful, if they’re real. The ones clearly showing on her hand, at least. I can’t see her others clearly enough to assess.
They honestly look like someone with a half-dry felt-tip pen got bored in study hall and set to doodling.
As for her ring, the pearl clearly has sentimental value and I’m all for non-diamond stones in or as engagement rings. At least it’s not some weird brown lump like Scarlett Johansson’s.
I have a friend like this. No, she’s not an international pop star, but she’s been engaged 5 times. My husband’s always like, “what’s this fiance’s name? Wes? No, that was the last one…Matt? No, that’s the other one. Dave?”
I think some people just get hooked on the rush.
My sister in law’s youngest sister is like that and we have the same conversation. In the weirdest coincidence of all, they have all had really similar names and physical features. She recently got engaged yet again and was posting about finally finding the “one” and I swear she almost used the same caption the last time. Freaky.
I knew one of those too. Engaged 3 times? I think in her 20s. Very pretty, but very flighty and unreliable, to the point where I couldn’t be friends with her anymore.
She seems to have calmed down and stopped getting engaged all the time, so that’s good.
I have a friend who was engaged 7 times before one finally stuck. Ended in divorce in less than two years. She seemed to take a break for a few years post divorce and I thought she’d finally realized that marriage was not all it was cracked up to be. But no, she’s back to chasing the ring. Very upset that her ill suited boyfriend wouldn’t give her a ring. I don’t get it.
I actually like the ring, it’s unique enough that’s for sure. I have a traditional solitaire and yes it’s pretty but I’d prefer something more my style and different from half the women in this country.
I like asymmetrical designs and think the ring would benefit from a third component like a small colored gem. I’d be afraid of damaging the pearl. You’d thing the jeweler who created the ring her fiancé designed would have advised against. The stone is stunning!
I agree, 3 items would balance the ring.
I’m indifferent about it.
Can’t focus on the ring for all the random ink!
He looks like Pete Davidson in one of the photos. I think she’s in love with the rush of love and getting engaged. I hate the finger and hand tats, but love the ring.
I thought in the first photo he looked like a young Julia Roberts; in the rest of them, I think he & Ariana look like siblings.
It’s very different, isn’t it? I don’t like an oval diamond, it just ruins the stone, an oval cut. Just very odd. Maybe the pearl has some significance to them both, who knows?
That’s funny, kelleybelle. Oval is the only shape I would consider in a diamond.
Eh the ring is fine. Dating to engaged in less than a year in your 20s seems risky. I feel like whirlwind romances happen way more often in Hollywood, as well as divorces. Like all of that fame heightens things. I say this with zero judgment, is there anyone in Hollywood who hasn’t been divorced at least once? Shell be okay no matter what, Im sure she has good lawyers. I hope it works out for her.
The pearl is from her deceased Grandfather’s tie pin. So it has sentimental value to her
Side note- he looks a lot like Pete Davidson to me
I like it, but I hope she’s going to make it a “special occasion” ring. Pearls can be harder to secure in their settings, and especially since hers is a family heirloom, it’d be awful if she lost it.
Question: Did anyone else NOT get an engagement ring? I didn’t, and people keep trying to make me feel weird about it. They think I’m trying to make some sort of feminist/humanitarian statement, or some shady bitch will go, “oh, he couldn’t afford it?” Yeah, no. We just thought we’d take a kickass honeymoon instead (eventually, I hope…). I had no idea other people would be so invested in my hypothetical jewelry collection.
It’s not weird at all! I totally get wanting a honeymoon over a ring! People put too much importance on engagement rings nowadays, IMO.
Tell those shady bitches “No, he just knew I would rather spend the money on something less… basic.” 🙂
The function of a ring is to communicate your “not single” status to other people, and these dorks are getting squirrelly over the fact you’re secure enough in your relationship to spend your money on things… which tells you absolute worlds about them. Sorry they’re making you feel weird about it, but it sounds like you’re making all the right decisions to me.
I got a super simple wedding band before I got an “engagement ring.” We eloped in our backyard and then told our families. A few months later I picked out my dream ring, an asymmetrical design from Heidi Gibson as a wedding present from my new husband. The whole thing was backwards but it worked for us. Engagements are fine but I really liked that we decided to get married together and did it without anyone else’s input. Also, my husband doesn’t want a ring so he never got one. To each their own.
Looks like a kid’s art project. I don’t think I’d even bother putting that one on the fridge.
Look the actual diamond, it is exquisite.
Her hands look like she scribbled on herself during homeroom. And she definitely bought herself that hideous ring, right?
No, it appears the kid is a (very expensive) real estate mogul–probably comes from money too.
What is wrong with this woman? Why does she keep running headlong into a brick wall?
Huge red flags on getting engaged 10 months into a relationship. I like to say “crazy always wants to lock it down”—meaning that unstable people try to get married super fast before the initial love-bombing wears off.
I think Ariana is addicted to the rush of intense love-bombing in unhealthy relationships and the “fun” of getting engaged and showing off to everyone.
I predict they’ll be broken up around the time when the COVID vaccine is available to the general public.
The hand ink and ring are FUG.
Pearls are too soft and fragile for engagement rings but luckily, this one does not have to last too long.
I love the ring. She’s not going to be washing dishes wearing it!
The diamond may be big, but it’s cloudy, not sparkly and clear. Her hands look like a prisoner’s with the tats.
Ariana gets engaged every year lmaoooo
Is no one going to mention how convenient it is that she announced the engagement the day before her Netflix special premiered? Publicity and the devil never sleep I guess.
I can’t with those nails, and then the gaudy selfie of the ring, why is this a thing? Ariana seems to fall hard and fast, doubt this will last, but good luck to her.
This isn’t her fifth engagement, or even her third. It’s her second, and before she dated him she had been single for a year. They probably still won’t last, but I’m not sure getting engaged after 10 or 11 months of dating is always necessarily crazy. Some people have managed to have good, healthy relationships and marriages with that kind of timing, while others dated for years first and it still ended up a hot mess. Love her new album.
If she does get married, will she still have that hairstyle for her wedding…
Whatever jeweler allowed that to happen should be fired. Or promoted because she’s gonna need to have it redone. At some point either replace the pearl fix the pearl something that ring is not a lifetimer, which is not great but the diamond is a Stunner- Probably an Instagram jeweler
The ring is not my taste, but it is a beautiful diamond, huge! It’s definitely the fashion right now, and every generation has some kind of “trend.” I think that makes it funny later, you can always tell the era of someone’s engagement ring. Gold is big right now, but 10 years ago it was platinum. Personally, I like gold on my skin tone.
One year would be too rushed for me, but it works for some. I have a friend who has a rule, if they’re not engaged within the year, she dumps them. This is after her ex of 4 years never proposed, leaving her feeling duped. My sister is the same way, she lived with her ex for over 2 years and he never proposed, so her current husband proposed pretty much right away and they’re still together. Some women resent the feeling they’re being strung along. For me, two years is the sweet spot. You know enough, and have been through at least one major up and down. Though like you said, COVID will either make or break.
Ugly setting.
And they look like brother and sister…
She’s so beautiful! I like most things about her and she’s been through a lot in the recent past so I’m happy for her. Ideally, she seems to have achieved Maslow’s hierarchy due to her wealth so I think finding and being in love is her priority now. I do hope she has good lawyers so she doesn’t hv to pay a lot of spousal support if it doesn’t work out.
I love her. I hope this works out. It probably won’t but oh well. Hopefully it won’t go down in flames like with Pete and Mac Miller. Girlfriend deserves some peace. I love the diamond but I don’t know how I feel about the pearl.
Ugly ring. I believe this is her second engagement. I hope she has learned a lot from her first failed engagement and is in a much better and more mature place in her life. But…I doubt it. She’s 27, but carries herself like a 20 year old.
Such a lovely girl…with what looks like prison grade tats all over her hands. That’s all I can focus on when I look at these pics. Not the lovely manicure or ring, just her ugly, tacky tats.
The ring is nice. Not my taste but pretty and unique.
Cecilia, I like the ring, too!
Her fiancé looks SO young!
The ring is unique. I don’t hate it.
like it for cocktail ring not an engagement ring
Hideous. As bad as her ponytail.
The ring is different which I like.
Who even is this guy though? This seems rushed and I’m not sure if he has money or not but she better get a solid prenup to protect her assets.
