Well, I was wrong. I kept thinking “they’ve spent way too long promoting Wicked, there’s no way this is going to do what they think it will.” I thought it would be an oversaturation issue, that people would be bored of hearing about Wicked before Part 1 even came out. But I was wrong – people love a musical, especially when it’s the first film adaptation of a massively popular Broadway show. Wicked is on track to becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. Gladiator II also performed very well – they were trying to make this into another Barbenheimer head-to-head (“Glicked”) and it worked?
If you care to find “Wicked,” look to the top of box office charts. Universal’s adaptation of Act One (with some padding) of the popular Broadway musical was No. 1 in North America with $114 million from 3,888 theaters over the weekend.
Those dazzling ticket sales rank as the third biggest domestic debut of the year behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($211 million) and “Inside Out 2” ($154 million). Among other benchmarks, “Wicked” landed the fourth-biggest start in history for a musical, ahead of Disney’s recent “The Little Mermaid” remake ($95.5 million) and behind “Frozen II” ($130 million), as well as the best opening (by far) for a Broadway adaptation, overtaking the record held by 2014’s “Into the Woods” ($31 million).
“Wicked” collected an additional $50.2 million at the international box office, bringing its global tally to $164.2 million. It marks the biggest worldwide opening for a film based on a Broadway show, supplanting another Universal musical, “Les Miserables,” with $103 million in 2012.
“It’s a juggernaut,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “Audiences are making the singing and costume experience their own.”
While “Wicked” was courting women (nearly 75% of ticket buyers) and families, men turned out in force for Paramount’s R-rated “Gladiator II,” the quarter-century-in-the-making sequel from director Ridley Scott. The bloody sword-and-sandal epic opened solidly in second place (though behind expectations) with $55.5 million from 3,573 cinemas over the weekend.
It’s unclear whether “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” fueled each other, à la “Barbenheimer,” an unexpected 2023 phenomenon in which tens of thousands of moviegoers opted for back-to-back screenings rather than choosing between Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” — or if “Glicked” is just an effective case of counterprogramming. Either way, this weekend was one of the biggest of the year with approximately $210 million in overall revenues.
Meanwhile, I debated whether to see Anora this weekend at the second-run theater in town – I ended up not going, but I will try to catch it this week before it leaves theaters. Like, I’m much more excited to see the awards-bait “smaller” films. But I’m happy for Wicked and Gladiator II. I even think they’ll both end up with some awards nominations, especially in supporting categories. People are saying Ariana Grande could get nominated in supporting actress, and Denzel Washington might get some supporting actor noms. It’s always good when actors are nominated from films people have actually seen.

There was too much excitement and chatter for this film to flop. Both leads are insufferable but insanely talented so good for them and the entire crew. I just may go and see it myself.
At least Lea Michele didn’t get the Elphaba role.
Agreed 💯
Anora is great. I saw it a week ago and still find myself thinking about it.
I saw Conclave with Fiennes and Tuccci a few weeks ago with my husband it was slow but totally worth the amazing ending I know it’s off topic bc we are talking about other movies but just my two cents , will probably go see Wicked even though I’m sick of the messiness around the actors, will stream Gladiator ,now I want to see Anora .
We thoroughly enjoyed Conclave, so many twists and turns with great performances all around. Isabella Rossellini rocks!
It’s out here this weekend and I’m really looking forward to seeing it. The first time we saw the trailer my initial reaction was a hard nope (a film full of men and about the catholic church?) but the more it went on the more interested I was. The cast is a big part of the attraction.
I feel like everyone I know was seeing it this weekend! We didn’t have time but we’ll definitely see it over thanksgiving break, I expect both movies will do pretty well going into December.
I think it helped that the first round of reviews was really positive for Wicked. Like I was probably going to see it this week anyway, but when everyone is seeing it AND loving it, that just makes me more excited to see it, and I’m sure that’s pushing some people who maybe thought “I’ll see it streaming” into the theater.
I think Jon Chu does a really good job of creating movies with bright colorful worlds and leaning into color and spectacle which I think probably helped make this movie so good.
I thought it was going to tank. I didn’t know it was a musical. I have no patience with musical movies and the affair with ariana and the boyfriend ruined for me.
Yeah, I am so done with hearing about that movie. Grande breaking up a marriage and all that messiness is something I abhor. I am not a fan of musicals, so I definitely will pass on it
If you didn’t even know it was a musical, I doubt you were going to be the target audience for it anyway.
Wicked was too well loved to fail. Especially when they start to add the sing a longs come Decemeber .
I saw the musical, with the ‘flying monkeys’ climbing up and down the stage set. It was wonderful. A movie is a different type of experience. It makes sense why people are taking their kids.
I saw gladiator 2 last weekend and wicked on friday. I wasn’t familiar with the story (besides knowing it was based on the broadway musical), but I had a marvelous time. Ariana Grande was a delight, but the movie belongs to Erivo. She’s truly mesmerizing and with the most lovely voice.
I was cautiously excited because I love the Broadway play, but it has some pacing issues IMO. The movie was just fantastic and didn’t feel like 3 hours to me and I think the extended runtime helped with the issues from the stage play by letting it breathe a little. The leads are both hot messes in real life but they were both superb in the movie. And Ari deserves the accolades; she sounded incredible and stole every scene she was in IMO.
I saw Gladiator 2 last weekend and Wicked yesterday (UK). I probably enjoyed them equally. G2 was let down by the CGI and the story needed to be tightened up.
My BFF saw the stage show of Wicked about 10 years ago and loved it and I knew nothing but figured why not. The cinema was FULL and this is the biggest screen at our local independent that I don’t think I’ve ever seen sold out. I loved the look and feel of it but it just went on too long for both of us, particularly when so many of the characters are acting like a$$holes so much of the time. It’s also a bit on the nose having Spongebob Sidepiece mooning after Glinda so much. We know what you did.
Elphaba/Cynthia was amazing and we thought everyone was pretty well cast. We’re also both not sure we’ll bother with the second part and seeing more about Glinda’s story.
Spongeboob character is in love with glinda and only dates nesa because she tells him to, i feel knowing how things happened in real life affected my immersion a little bit but he is totally in character. You can listen to the whole musical and get the full story, i dont want to spoil the next part.
I decided last minute to see Wicked this weekend. I was at the Target next to a movie theater and thought eh what the hell. I loved it. Ariana and Cynthia were both enchanting on the screen, honestly. Nobody sang along in my theater. I was probably the loudest when something that surprised me toward the end happened and I went ‘OHHHH!!!” a bit enthusiastically. It is long, but entertaining the whole way through.
I gasped and shook my BF, who had no idea why I was reacting that way…
Right? I thought I’d be in a movie theater full of musical theater kids but people definitely looked at me funny when I reacted so I guess I was actually the theater kid? LOL. I was almost afraid to even post that there is a surprise in the movie for fear of creating any type of spoiler. One of the actresses whom I am referring to posted on Instagram about it today though so…not a spoiler anymore lol,.
I saw both films. Wicked was far better than I expected to the point where I consider it one of the most enjoyable movies I saw this year. Gladiator 2 was ok at best but Denzel Washington is worth the ticket price. I go to the movies to escape and be entertained and I’m glad I can do so without being overly concerned about the actors’ personal lives.
I’ve seen both the last two weekends and enjoyed them very much.
As someone who is indifferent about Ariana Grande I was SURPRISED at her take of Galinda (the Ga is silent) and absolutely loved her. Hopefully there will be more Jonathan Bailey in Part II!
We saw “Wicked” Friday night, and it was spectacular.
I saw the musical on Broadway and adored it, and was likewise enthralled by the movie. Cynthia Erivo is just sensational, and Jonathan Bailey is a delight.
(We also saw the “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” this weekend and it was lovely. I actually cried.)
I’m happy to see a movie, any movie, featuring two women in the leads roles do so extremely well. I’m going to see it this weekend, bucket of popcorn at the ready.
Oh, and just yesterday I noticed at the coffee shop across the street that they had two tip jars, one labeled Glinda & one labeled Elphaba. Elphaba wasn’t getting any love!
I don’t love musicals too much but hearing that it’ll be a huge hit is such a relief. I’m rooting for women leading movies all on their own, not needing a male lead to get greenlit. The more blockbusters the better. I’ll happily tuck into this one when it comes to streaming.
I saw Gladiator 2 and loved it. It far exceeded my expectations. Definitely worth seeing in the theater.
I was not planning to see Wicked, as I’m still annoyed the book that I loved so much was turned into a musical…however, I went anyway. It was great. I have zero fondness for Ariana Grande, but she was really, really good. I didn’t love the music, but it was engaging, and the sets/costumes are worth the ticket price alone. I do think it’s worth seeing on a big screen. Thankfully the showing I went to was not filled with teenage girls singing along.
I saw Wicked last night in 3D 4DX and it was the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. And the only thing wrong is making us wait a year for part 2. I am glad I went in blind and whoever was keeping those movie secrets. GOD BLESS THEM!!
Go see it, and everyone in the theatre was respectful and no one sang and we all cheered and clapped at the end credits. The last time I cried in a theatre was Titanic in 1997. And I was all mushy last night.
It was a perfect night.
I don’t think it’s true that people love a musical. Every once in a while one hits but the last musical that hit like THIS was probably Grease and I was 10 when that came out! Chicago, Les Mis— critics liked them but they weren’t flashy, fun money makers for the whole family to enjoy. Rent and Cats were flops.
I saw the road show for Wicked in Detroit and then saw it in London’s West End a few years later. I also was a bit concerned about this movie, but I went to see it today with my DIL and granddaughter, and frankly, I was impressed. The leads and the rest of the cast did an excellent job.
The movie followed the plot of the two live shows I have seen previously, and while it was pretty long, that was no doubt due to the filling in of some gaps in the original shows. In fact, I would recommend it to anyone who has not yet seen the live shows.
However, I know the plot, but I agree that making people wait an entire year for the second part is a bit much–4-5 months would have been more reasonable.
