Marius Borg Høiby was arrested again just before his trial, which starts today

Marius Borg Hoiby’s trial starts today in Oslo. Hoiby is the eldest son of Norway’s Princess Mette-Marit, and Hoiby is Crown Prince Haakon’s stepson. Haakon raised Hoiby since Marius was a young child. Just two days before Hoiby’s trial began, he was rearrested and taken into custody for the length of his trial. Alongside the latest revelations about Mette-Marit’s longtime friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, this situation has now consumed Norwegian media and spread across European and North American media too.

The Norwegian royal family is under increasing pressure after Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s eldest son was arrested for an alleged assault on the eve of his trial on four charges of rape and 34 other offences.

Marius Borg Hoiby, 29, will spend the next four weeks in custody after he allegedly assaulted a former girlfriend over the weekend. Police in Oslo confirmed they had arrested Hoiby on suspicion of assault, threatening a woman with a knife and breaching a restraining order.

Local media suggested the victim was the same former partner he has admitted attacking at her flat in the upmarket district of Frogner in 2024, smashing the chandelier and sticking a knife into a wall. By his own account, he was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time. Judges at Oslo district court ruled he should be kept in detention until March 2 because there was a significant risk he would reoffend.

Hoiby was arrested hours after the latest batch of Epstein files was released, containing references to his mother as well as a former prime minister, an ex-foreign minister and two of Norway’s most famous diplomats. The monarchy now faces a fight for its reputation: on Tuesday, Hoiby’s prosecution will be broadcast live on television as MPs discuss proposals to replace King Harald V with an elected president. A vote on abolishing the monarchy has been held in almost every Norwegian parliament since 1968, and each time it has been defeated.

For now, the Hoiby case appears likely to do more damage than the entanglement with Epstein even though, as Mette-Marit’s son from an relationship before she married Crown Prince Haakon, he is not technically a member of the royal household. Hoiby faces 38 charges, including four of rape, two of bodily harm, six of sexual molestation, and conspiring to transport 3.5kg of cannabis with a street value of more than £50,000.

[From The Times]

“The Hoiby case appears likely to do more damage than the entanglement with Epstein even though…” The thing is, they’re arguably connected. People can and are make the argument that Mette Marit’s poor character has been revealed completely – she’s the kind of woman who sent extremely friendly emails to a convicted p3do for years AND she raised and enabled this monster of a son. While I don’t think anyone will argue that Mette-Marit is “the reason” why Marius is the way he is, it definitely looks like Mette-Marit and Haakon had a lot of knowledge about his violent abuse of multiple women. People should know the extent to which they enabled Marius and covered up his crimes.

The New York Times also had a major piece about how the Epstein Files are bringing terrible headlines and republican sentiments across the UK and Norway. Norway’s prime minister Jonas Gahr Store said: “Crown Princess Mette-Marit has herself acknowledged that she has exercised poor judgment, and I agree with her.” One of Norway’s largest newspapers Aftenposten publicly asked, “Can Mette-Marit become queen after this?” One of Norway’s top royal commentators spoke out on TV2: “It is not just the Crown Princess who has shown exceptionally poor judgment, but an entire state apparatus that has played bankrupt with Norway’s international reputation.”

haakon should divorce her asap. she was talking about how Epstein made her feel like the most beautiful woman and JE talked with a friend about Mette wanting to carry his baby. that woman is rotten and evil.

    • Jais says:

But does anyone think he will divorce her? We talked about this yesterday and I saw them once interviews talking about her illness. I kind of don’t see him doing that. But maybe I’m wrong. I have no idea really.

      • Mayp says:

@jais, I also don’t see them divorcing but I do see Haakon stepping aside in the line of succession for Ingrid Alexandra (as a last ditch effort to save the monarchy).

    • FancyPants says:

Even if he did divorce her because he “had to,” it would be like the York “divorce” where they’ve never truly separated.

  2. YankeeDoodles says:

I never thought of Norway as Eurotrash.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

They’re not, but their royals are certainly showing themselves. “The monarchy now faces a fight for its reputation.” Good. As a Minnesotan, I can affirm that you never want to make Norwegians mad.

      • Hypocrisy says:

Grew up on Lake Superior in the upper peninsula and that statement made me laugh 😂 because it is so true.

      • Worktowander says:

As a fellow Minnesotan (but not Norwegian), I concur. See: (gestures wildly at the streets of Minneapolis right now)

      • Miranda says:

Several years ago, I was leading a group of anthropology students on a research trip in Siberia, and our wilderness guide was Norwegian. As the only woman, I never felt safe, so he essentially became my bodyguard as well and took care of things when a couple guys got drunk and acted threatening towards me. He also now knits me a sweater every Christmas. Norwegians are so badass that they can do both those things, lol.

      • Beana says:

Part Norwegian, and it’s so true. We try to be very congenial, but once you push us, the inner Viking comes out!

      • Mayp says:

Lol, my grandmother grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of European and Scandinavian immigrants and she had been engaged to a Norwegian immigrant.

Now, my grandmother was a bit of an exuberant, bubbly, flapper (it was the twenties) and he looked down on her behavior – like, going out with their friends to dance and rougeing her knees! 🙄. He was trying to control her so she broke up with him (good for her)..

I asked my great uncle, her brother, about him and he just said “oh, those Norwegians, they’re worse than the Swedes” ! 😆😆😆 Maybe he had gotten mad at her!

  3. YankeeDoodles says:

Thank you, @Brassy Rebel! That made me laugh out loud. ;-D

He looks like Morgana’s evil son in Excalibur.

  6. IdlesAtCranky says:

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again today:

It’s time and past time to abolish the world’s monarchies and dismantle the protected classes of the uber-rich. They’re a cancer on humanity.

    • Meg says:

      Yes, this.

    • mycatlovestv says:

      Absolutely!

    • Snarkle says:

      @idlesatcranky
The global cultural indoctrination that some people have divine right or entitlement to inherited wealth/status/power is 100% the most insidious and pernicious plight on our humanity today.

Also, your name is hilarious, I can relate. Although these day my idle is more accurately seething rage or turtling. *sigh*

  7. Amy Bee says:

There’s no way that the Times can condemn the Norwegian Royal Family without doing the same to the British Royal Family hence that terrible last paragraph in the piece. It’s clear that the Crown Prince couple indulged and were covering up their son’s crimes for years.

  8. Debbie says:

Please don’t tell me the picture of him in the dark glasses is a recent photo. He looks like a Gordon Gecko acolyte. Either way, the look screams “guilty.”

  9. Chantal1 says:

In one of the JE emails, Mette-Marit asked pedo JE if she should show her 15 yr old son nude photos of women. Imagine asking a known pedo for parenting advice! This idiot couldn’t resist violating a restraining order and threatening his victim right before going to trial. He’s facing 38 heinous charges, is still operating as overly privileged and lacks any impulse control, critical thinking skills or self preservation. Hopefully he’s gets put away for a very long time and his victims get the justice and compensation they deserve.

JE’s claws (i.e. blackmail material) were far reaching. What other horrible skeletons are about to come tumbling and leapfrogging out of various “royal” closets? Yet they think they’re so much better than “nonroyals”.

    • FYI says:

Imagine asking ANYONE, pedo or not, whether you should show nudes to your 15-year-old!??! I mean, what parent DOES that!? WHY? Any 15-year-old with a phone can see nudes anytime he wants. Why would a parent get involved with that!? All of this is really weird.

  10. Kitten says:

Dangerous repeat offender. Dude should absolutely be in prison.

  11. Eva says:

But not in Norwegian. Cecot would be more appropriate for him.

  12. Miss Scarlett says:

MM has always been horrible and lazy. I know people say – oh but she’s sick! Which, fine, but what these emails als show is that she’s spent most of her time as CPss galavanting around the world with questionable people instead of being with her family and doing her duty to her country.

I’ve actually also wondered if she and Hakkon are unofficially separated?

  13. Jenny says:

If evil has a face it surely looks like that POS. He has the dead eyes of a sociopath. Just imagine the scope of his actual crimes given his privilege. I hope consequences finally catch up to this predator.
I’m beginning to think that ruling one percent are filled with amoral trash. I’m haunted by the testimony of one of Matt Lauer’s victims, she said he claimed ( after he anally raped her) that he was only aroused by acts that felt “transgressive “. I think that applies here.

  14. Steph says:

I really don’t know how the Norwegian carceral system works but I’m going to apply my question as if it was just like America bc the same thing would happen here: 4 of his 34 charges were for rape, 6 for sexual molestation. All against MULTIPLE women over several years. Why the f was he out the night before his trial to begin with? Why did he need to pull a knife on someone for them to decide he is at a high risk to reoffend when he’s been offending for years already?!

    • BeanieBean says:

‘Cause he’s rich, he’s white, and part of the Norwegian royal family (regardless of what the Times says)?

  15. Beverley says:

This predator has the bearing of someone who knows they’re protected and is confident that they will get off scott free. These people – royals and royal-adjacent – have every reason to believe they are above the law because they rarely suffer any consequences.

  16. YankeeDoodles says:

I mean. Can you really be Queen of Norway — one day — when your son is in prison for raping multiple women? ….

  17. VilleRose says:

Gosh, so much going on in the land of troubled royals. Mette-Marit being implicated with years of email correspondence with Epstein (after he was convicted of SA) and her son gets re-arrested for domestic violence right before his trial begins for a former domestic violence charge which is just a surreal turn of events. I’m really hoping Marius’s partner has a come to Jesus moment and finally decides to leave him, but I know it’s a really hard cycle for DV survivors.

I know Mette-Marit had a somewhat “shady” past being a single mom. She comes from a rough background, her dad was convicted of violence twice, her parents divorced when she was young. It’s not surprising she ended up bouncing from relationship to relationship surrounded by drugs. But it’s sad she was not able to break that cycle of violence and drugs with her son. And her friendship with Epstein after he was convicted of SA is so troubling. Both Haakon and his sister Martha Louise both picked really questionable partners. I never thought the shaman guy would look good in comparison (and he’s super problematic as well).

  18. Digital Unicorn says:

He’s a sexual predator who has a deep and violent hatred of women – the 38 charges leaves no doubt that he is a danger to women and will be as he never shown any remorse for what he has done. His parents can try and say the opposite but his actions speaks louder than their PR – the fact that he got arrested the day before his trial says a lot about how entitled he is and thinks that Mummy and Daddy will get him off with it like they always have. MM and Haakon have a LOT to answer for here, esp MM who should be charged for interfering in a police investigation, tampering with evidence and witness intimidation. I guess we can see where he gets it from. Marcus has some serious mommy issues.

Prison is where he belongs – having mental health issues is no excuse for that kind of repeat offending. He has been enabled his whole life and is finally being held accountable. I hope the judge keeps him locked up for the duration of the trial as he was clearly trying to intimidate the main witness.

She has shown her ass repeatedly, Haakon will never divorce her – I suspect he will be given a choice; divorce her or pass the crown onto his daughter. Surely MM understands that she can’t be Queen after all this.

  19. tamsin says:

This guy is clearly dangerous, and at this point seems fairly irredeemable. His pictures just seem to radiate a cold, soulless vibe. Did a quick check on him with Mr. Google, and it seems his father was a convicted drug criminal and his mother, the crown princess who lived with him prior to meeting the crown prince, seems to have lived a pretty untethered life, to put it kindly. I read that his mother tried to interfere with the trial by contacting some of his victims and threatening them, although I don’t know how true this is. I think it’s plausible though. Anyway, I guess there was public opposition in Norway to the marriage. The poor king and queen of Norway. They are the parents of the princess who married the questionable shaman and this problematic crown prince family. The king appears to be popular and respected, but I’m drawing some parallels to the UK regarding the succession. Charles married a problematic woman who has a son who was problematic in his youth. William, the heir, now seems to have a problematic marriage. Not looking good for monarchies.

  20. Cinder says:

Unfortunately yet another royal whose timing of illness and withdrawal from duties is now highly suspect. These people always have long advance warnings of if/when these things are going to come out. Whether it was this Epstein stuff or the charges against her son.

  21. BeanieBean says:

‘… he is not technically a member of the royal household.’ Wow, the way these people think.

Also, if a judge said he should be kept in jail until his trial, why was he out & about to assault his ex again? Or is stemming from yesterday’s arrest?

  22. bisynaptic says:

    Norway, now; UK, next. #AbolishMonarchy
