Drew Barrymore: ‘I don’t wanna wear a bra… I’m over it & I don’t care anymore’

I know Drew Barrymore isn’t everyone’s flavor, but I enjoy many of the subjects she brings up on her talk show. I feel like her bubbly-TMI personality actually helps facilitate some important conversations about dating, aging, menopause and more. And now she’s crossing into a subject I care about deeply: bras and what to do with your girls. A few years ago, there was a tweet from a big-busted woman who referred to herself as a “big-rig hauler.” That’s how I feel too, that I’m a big-rig hauler and I have to be conscious to always wear a bra when I go out. Now, as I get older? My rules have changed a little bit. For weekends, I basically ONLY wear a bra when I’m leaving the house, and I whip that puppy off as soon as I step inside. But my rule is: during the week, while I work from home, I need to wear a bra. Well, Drew is no longer wearing bras even when she’s at work. She’s starting wearing leotards in place of bras. Tell me more!!

Drew Barrymore is sharing her unfiltered thoughts about bras. The actress and host, 51, revealed that she’s “over” the clothing item while speaking with comedian Chris Fleming during the April 14 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.

“I’m wearing a weird leotard right now,” Barrymore said as she opened her button-down shirt, exposing the beige-colored undergarment. “I wear this thing cause I don’t wanna wear a bra because I’m over a bra. I’m too old, and I won’t wear one.”

She continued, “I don’t care if these sausages fall down to my knees. I just, I’m over it, and I don’t care anymore.”

Barrymore recently got emotional when talking about her body insecurities after welcoming her two children, Olive, 13, and Frankie, 11.

During a segment called “Scared to Wear” on the Monday, April 6, episode of her show, a viewer had a makeover after struggling with self-image when they lost a lot of weight, and Barrymore said she empathized with where the viewer, Dawn, was coming from.

“The other day I was walking down the street, and I’ve had two C-Sections, and I’m so wrecked down there,” Barrymore told Dawn while tearing up. “I can’t wear a lot of different types of pants,” she continued. “But the other day I was walking around, and I had this shorter shirt on, and I couldn’t keep my jacket closed. And I was walking around like ‘I don’t want anyone to see this.’ And I so get when you have kids, and you have a busy life, and your body changes and you get older, and things just aren’t the same. I totally get it,” Barrymore concluded, adding that viewer Dawn looked “so stunning” in her new look.

The thing is, I’m pretty sure a leotard would bug me more than a bra. Like, it would just flatten everything out and give me one big unaboob and I would feel like an amorphous blob. That’s the same reason I stopped wearing sports bras too – I hate the “flattening/blob” effect. I just wear my regular underwire bras while walking or working out now and it’s much more comfortable for me. But yeah… braless at home, in general. Gotta let the big-rig breathe!!

Since the lockdown I’m done with metal underwire bras. It’s soft bras, bralettes or Laverne and Shirley go free range.

    • StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

      Same!
      +shapewear camisoles

    • Tate says:

Went through breast cancer last year. Now wear bralettes and wondering why I didn’t wear them sooner. So much more comfortable.

    • Lucy says:

      Yes! F*ck underwire forever!!!

Part of my perimenopause is I went from a lifelong B (other than when breastfeeding) to a D cup and it’s stupid and I hate it, but still sticking to bralettes. I love EBY, they have all mesh ones that are great for Texas heat (although don’t have cup coverage), and then their wireless bralettes are 🔥

I hear you, sister! I was also small-breasted and loving it, but with menopause came bigger boobs, so now it’s a little more uncomfortable to go braless, so it’s semi-fitted tanks at home and bralettes when out. I wish I could handle letting them free range, but it’s uncomfortable too. The struggle is real!! My husband is the only one who likes them better now 😉

YES!!! I got a Fabletics subscription during the pandemic because I wasn’t wearing real clothes any more. I have since cancelled the subscription, but the result is I have about two dozen very comfy sports bras. Stylish sports bras are the only bra I will ever wear again (when I bother to wear a bra, which is just at the gym and the occasional day in the office).

  2. Flamingo says:

I don’t wear traditional bras either. I just wear a soft sports bra and call it a day. No more clasps to fight with!

Or depending on the situation I will wear a spandex body suit to try and suck the menopause gut in.

  3. Jen says:

I’ve been trying to get more comfortable going without one in public (I never wear them at home). But it makes me feel so self conscious. I have a lot of back pain, and I feel like the bra straps pull down on my shoulders and make it worse. If I use a tighter band, it makes my ribs sore. I would kill for smaller boobs.

  4. Nanea says:

I’ve never worn bras with any kind of wires. The one that I had, that came highly recommended, got tossed (went to my cousin) after I’d been wearing it once for a few hours.

When I go out, I wear a soft bra with moulded cups without clasps, at home it’s a seamless one, again no clasps.

      Brand recommendations?

      • Teagirl says:

Much as I hate to recommend Amazon, I was given a bra almost brand new from a friend who dropped sizes when she lost weight. The brand is MOEOZLLO and I absolutely loved it so much I bought several more in different colors. Soft Cups, no seams, three hooks and an extra piece to extend if you need it. Adjustable straps. Not expensive either compared with Wonderbra or Maidenform etc Over the decades I’ve worn most major brands and most types from balconet to bralets, and these MOEOZLLO have been the best ever. I haven’t been able to find them anywhere else, so Amazon it was. Another good thing is that I fold the cups in on themselves and put them in a special bra bag and put them in the washing machine, then hang them to dry. They have lasted incredibly well. And nobody’s paying me to tell you this!

I stopped wearing bras when I had a cyst a while ago and never looked back…Team Drew! And I just don’t care (what was that great Instagram called that? Hilarious). I’m no longer the perky boobed youngster strutting my stuff so as an old it doesn’t get noticed and that’s A-OK with me.

For any kind of professional event (I still network, mentor etc after retirement) I do wear non wired bras and it took me forever to find one that fit right. I’m a D cup. I found the brand Negative and that’s all I wear now. Gorgeous, high quality and the customer service is the best of any online source I’ve tried

      • Hannah1 says:

Thanks Teagirl and Lady E! These are new to me.

I have implants and they’re not huge, so I just use silicone nipple covers. Beas, even sports bras, aggravate my shoulder. I’m currently spending a lot of money on massages to ease the discomfort. I noticed bra less days I had less pain.

  6. Mei says:

Absolute yes to this. Underwires are the devil’s work, I stopped wearing bras with them years ago and I’m so much more comfortable! My go-to are Triumph non-wired bras, the clasp is a bit annoying but I like that I can adjust the width still if I need to after washing if it feels a little tighter etc.

  7. FancyPants says:

I’m done with underwire bras, but I did just buy a bra that’s supposed to improve my posture (eagerly waiting for results to kick in).

  8. Mirandat says:

32DD here, and they actually look even bigger because I’m so short. I tried to say “fuck it” and go without at home during COVID, but no. I will never not wear a bra. I even sleep in a soft one (which my husband jokingly complains about, because it impedes his access 😂. Is that TMI? Whatever, it’s in the spirit of Drew, lol). I sometimes hate having big boobs, but I figure that if they’re gonna be there, they’re gonna look their best at all times, and I like the support. I also plan to get a breast lift if/when I feel it’s necessary. I know it sounds shitty, but one of the main reasons I’ve never wanted to have kids — as in, actually giving birth to them myself — is because I’m just THAT vain about my figure (which is not to say that I judge other women for their post-baby bodies. It’s just a “me” thing. I know I suck, lol).

    • GAFFNEY says:

@mirandat -all bra all the time for me too, even in the tub/shower sometimes because that’s where I wash the more expensive ones. Not TMI, my husband is same

  9. Sue says:

More power to you if you can stand not wearing one. I absolutely hate the feeling of not having a bra on. I’m 42D and am post baby/ post breastfeeding. For underwire, I only wear that in a strapless bra. Otherwise, I like the Bali wireless full coverage bras. But I agree that traditional sports bras are the devil: I honestly believe whoever designs them hates women what with the uni-boob effect and those stupid pads that aren’t attached to the material. I finally just found a sports bra that separates and doesn’t have pads in it. I use it for a dance class that I take with all women so I’m not really conscious if my nips are visible through fabric.

  10. Nicole says:

Going braless. Lord I wish. My boobs are huge. Bras are practically the first thing I put on and the last thing I take off. Boobs suck.

  11. JanetDR says:

I am all about an underwire bra when we are going dancing. And at least a bralette around the house. I just can’t be comfortable unless I have some degree of support (DD).

  12. MaisiesMom says:

A leotard for me would be worse than a bra, too! I’m with you there. I had to wear them as a kid for dance and when I did some theater productions in middle school and I hate how they feel.

I only wear an underwire bra if we are going out with other people and/or I know pictures will be taken. When my son got married last year I wore a space age bra that cost a fortune, but it was worth it because the pictures look good. For regular days, I managed to find a wireless number that gives great support, covers the sides and is pretty comfortable. It does minimize them some but I’m a DD so that’s fine with me.

I hate having boobs. A-Cuppers are so lucky.

  13. Chantal1 says:

I concur! Now that I’m older, definitely no bras while at home! I usually wear one out in public bc I have big boobs now thanks to taking steroids many years ago for my autoimmune disease. Sometimes I can’t wear one due to a shoulder injury acting up, but I feel so self conscious when I don’t wear one in public! I hated underwire bras and used to cut my bras and remove the underwires. Now I prefer front closing bras. My older sister, who always had big boobs, had a breast reduction, which her doctor said was medically necessary to help her severe back pain. I wonder if that’s what is causing mine and am going to talk to my doctor about it.

  14. Myself says:

Large breasts here (had a reduction at 19, best thing I ever did esp since insurance paid, but alas gained weight with age and now even when I lose weight, I still have big boobs). Would do a reduction again if I’m able to lose weight and keep it off. I HATE BRAS. I wear them when I leave the house, to varying extents based on my plans. Seeing so many respond they too hate bras, or very structured/underwire bras makes me wonder why you all still make fun of the Queen (past or present) for not having boobs up under her chin. I sure as hell won’t when I’m her age – and I’d care even less if I were Queen 😉

  15. Chaine says:

I wish I could. Mine are too bouncy for no bra. They hurt like that. My compromise is sports bra, but a band size larger than my actual size. Keep everything in place but not squishing them or stopping me breathing properly.

  16. tamsin says:

I’m like Kaiser- bra if I’m leaving the house, and off the minute I can when back home. Liberation! I can’t go completely without a bra, but I go without one as often as I can. Try not to be seen much below the shoulders on Zoom or FaceTime or whatever. Those underwire bras were torture. Can’t believe I actually wore them at one time.

  17. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Drew had a major breast reduction when she was younger. I say good for her, but dont forget that other women may not have the money to buy themselves that benefit.

  18. Anne Maria says:

I hoick them up into a Büstenhalter when I’m going out. Other than that, they can sag (and they do).

  19. QuiteContrary says:

When I was younger, I hated my B-sized boobs; now I’m grateful for them.

I stopped wearing underwires after one got caught in my washing machine and shut that thing down. I don’t know what I was trying to hold up anyway.

  20. Lady Rae says:

You can buy sports bras with an underwire so that’s stops the whole flattening uniboob thing. I get them from a brand called panache. They come with a racer back clip so that could make it really comfortable around the shoulders. I’m not against bralettes but I’ve just never found one for bigger boobs.

  21. Lolo says:

I absolutely HATE bras and always have, and I have always gone without one from being size A/B as a teen to DD now. A very long time ago I figured out how to dress so that it’s impossible to tell. In public, at work, everywhere. I often wear shapewear camisoles and that’s more than enough.

One thing I have always hated about bras is that most of them only cover the outside half of your breasts and leave the inside half bare anyway??? To “show off your cleavage??” which is exactly what I DON’T want to.

But more importantly, my nipple sits exactly in the center of my breast so where the bra ends usually sits exactly on my nipple which is extremely uncomfortable and leaves me prone to falling out of any bra if I bend over. It’s not a size issue. Going up a size leads to loose gappy cups making me even MORE prone to falling out of a bra if I bend over. It’s so stupid. I just don’t wear them at all unless doing sports that involve running.
