Earlier, I wrote about the Earl Spencer’s soon-to-be-published book about his sister, Princess Diana. The announcement about Swan Song: Diana, My Sister came on Tuesday, and I’ve been keeping my eye out to see if and when the Windsors send their royalist minions after Charles Spencer. Well, about that. Just hours after the book announcement on Tuesday, GB News had that rancid old fart Tom Bower on to talk about the book and the Earl Spencer. Now, I do not believe that Bower is speaking on behalf of the palace. He hasn’t received his marching orders (yet). Bower is just thrilled because FINALLY there’s a new storyline to discuss.
‘Masses of scores to be settled.’
Royal biographer Tom Bower explains why Earl Charles Spencer is writing a book about his late sister’s life, adding ‘this is going to damage the monarchy even more.’ pic.twitter.com/C2xfmOEa2y
— GB News (@GBNEWS) August 18, 2026
Bower lets the cat out of the bag a few times. He’s actually previewing a problem the Windsors will have when they try to push back on this book: Charles Spencer has every right to set “his record straight,” and Spencer clearly has exclusive information about his sister and his sister’s marriage. Bower also claimed that Spencer is “furious with King Charles, doesn’t like William and [is] very pro-Harry.” Bower also predicts that Spencer has “masses of scores to be settled and masses of unhappiness to be created.” Bower also agreed with the GB News guy who called this book a potential “astonishing broadside to the monarchy,” especially given the Windsors’ historic unpopularity at this moment.
Bower also admits – if that’s the right word – that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have done enormous damage to the monarchy, and then Bower says “Harry’s book was the most bought book, sold book, in the history of nonfiction. Perhaps there’s family rivalry. Charles Spencer wants to beat his nephew.”

Not every family feels the need to compete with one another, horrible man. But the rest of this makes sense, which is very rare for him.
Family rivalry? Tom Bower wants to start something where this is nothing. Charles Spencer and Harry seem to have a real positive relationship. I could see there being some friendly competition because Earl Spencer is a writer by trade.
I REALLY want to know his thoughts on Scooter Manchild. I’ll read that book for that tea alone.
I’m liking Uncle Charles more and more. He’s giving Cardi B. Vibes, “You want to go low? I’m going to take it to hell!” They can’t do a damn thing about it either and they had to know this was coming eventually; he practically declared war at Diana’s funeral. Where’s my popcorn?
Diana was divorced from Charles , separated for years.
Her story does not belong to the Windsors. No matter haw many books and articles they commission, she is not theirs.
It’s about time the world realizes that.
Absolutely! They tried to control Diana and made her life miserable, and now they are trying to control her in death. I’ll be ordering this book this afternoon. Can’t wait to read it.
Exactly. They treated her terribly. She was much closer to her brother – whatever the ups and downs of their relationship- than she ever was to any of the Windsors.
Side note: I wouldn’t be surprised if Bowers claim that Lord Spencer doesn’t like William is true. Willy is pure Windsor and I can’t imagine Lord Spencer enjoyed watching Willy call his mother paranoid.
🤣hahaha🤣 Brower, what are you talking about…
“Harry’s book was the most bought book, sold book, in the history of nonfiction. ”
Poor guy forgot he was telling everyone he wanted to listen that Spare was a flop and was sitting on shelves because no one was buying it, and now the truth accidentally slipped out of his mouth 🤣🤣
Hilarious, isn’t it? I can imagine him, “Ooops, no, wait, did I say Spare? I meant the Bible, yes, that’s what I meant. Spare was a flop, trust me.”
🤣🤣
Funny enough, Bower also made an admission a few weeks ago on Camilla Tominey’s podcast, where he admitted that his latest H&M book had flopped (he wasn’t making any money off it), and that … listen to this … he had to pay the publisher money instead. I laughed so hard when he said it without any embarrassment.
I also remember that a saw a clip of him on X where he was sitting on another one of these podcasts, a few weeks after that book came out, where he said that this 2nd H&M book was a bestseller, lol.
Which is it – a best seller within weeks, or a flop that puts you in depth 1- 1.5 year later.
So much anticipation and glee. So much false concern for the royal family, while printing every juicy detail and creating hundreds of suppositions. The palaces, refusing to comment while furiously commenting – and William, purple with rage that someone likes Harry better than him. Only in the land of Shakespeare.
Looking at those photo’s of Diana – there was a ‘something’ that drew you to her even in photo’s. A presence / charisma whatever you want to call it – its something that Harry inherited from her.
She was a troubled soul but it still shone.
Bowers’ tone is interesting there’s no venom towards Charles Spencer for witing this book as opposed to when Harry wrote his. At least the press is finally admitting that Harry’s book was a major bestseller. I think closer to the release date there will be rumblings from the Palace about book. The Royal Family is on vacation now but I’m sure behind the scenes the private secretaries and comms teams are devising the plan of attack.
They’re most likely pulling a lot of strings to get advance copies so they can pre-emptively trash it and set their narrative before it is officially released, just like they did with Harry’s book.
The Palace did ask for a copy of Harry’s book before it was released but they didn’t get it. I suspect the same thing will happen with Charles Spencer’s book. But no doubt that the Palace will preempt book by getting people like Tina Brown, Robert Jobson, Robert Hardman and Richard Kay to write columns about the Diana they knew and to bash Charles Spencer.
This news comes right as they start their annual summer retreat! We know what will be discussed around the dinner table.
Bower is disgusting. He actually blamed, for Diana’s death, first, Charles Spencer, for supposedly not allowing Diana to stay at the Spencer estate; and Diana, for not wearing seat belts.
He insists the paparazzi played no role.
I honestly believe most people didn’t wear seatbelts in the back seat UNTIL this happened to Diana.
By the time she died people were wearing seat belts. The conversation and then the law began to change by the late 1980s. By the time I bought my first car, when I was 26 in the early 90s, I always wore a seat belt. Of course that was in the US, not the UK or France. But still. I doubt the mother of the future King and the Spare was cavalier about this.
Front seat belts became law, in the UK, in 1968. It included back seat belts for under 14s.
Back seat belts became law in 1991.
Both are old tropes that were promoted and paraded by the press after their initial shock at Diana’s death and the need to grovel bc of public anger subsided, and the press went on the offensive.
After Diana’s death, her sisters said that she ALWAYS wore her seatbelt and was very meticulous about it. The fact that she wasn’t wearing one at the time was highly unusual, which is why many believe the belts might have been deliberately tampered with.
I will NEVER believe it was an accidental death or caused by a drunk driver.
I’m in agreement with you on that 😏
I think the Palace and the Rota should be less concerned about familial competition and more concerned about the public reading the Earl of Spencer’s book as a companion piece to Harry’s.
Books don’t damage the monarchy. Press doesn’t damage the monarchy.
The monarchy has damaged itself. These books and press just expose it and force them to answer for it.
And still, they rage – it’s the BOOKS that are destroying us!
Not Andrew. Not raging Bulliam. Not suitcases of money. Not targeting and tormenting people. Not hoarding land and money. Not outrageous hypocrisy. Not endless machinations and infighting. Not complicit press.
But go on, then. Rage away…
I wonder how the revelation of tabloid phone hacking has changed Charles view of Diana’s last years
I think the Windsors better tread carefully and know it. They are getting ready to lose control of their carefully curated narratives. A book about Diana will generate interest and will sell well, but a lot of her history has been viciously rewritten by Windsor rota stooges already. KC felt secure enough in those historical revisions to marry his conniving side chick less than 10 years after Diana died. If the Windsors attack Charles Spencer too hard, they may inspire him to write the book about the effects of Diana’s death on those around her that I am personally more interested in reading. Harry was generous to the Windsors in Spare and did not have the same perspective his uncle would have had. A book that details how Diana’s sons were deliberately isolated from the Spencer family after her death, how absent Charles was as a parent, how Willy was worked on by the grey men to become the horrid trash he became, how mercurial Willy has always been and how the circumstances around Diana’s death (Windsor stoked media fury/lack of proper security) have been viciously repeated with the Sussexes will set the house of Windsor on fire.
Oh please to the idea that Charles Spencer is competing with Harry over book seeks. I expect this book to do well but maybe not to the same level as a Prince writing a book, lol. But I’m quite sure Harry supports his uncle and if did make more he’d be like great, food for you. The Spencers are not the Windsors with their vicious jealousy and competitiveness. But I expect the knives will be fully out for Charles Spencer once the book comes out.
Edit- so many typos in this and it’s not letting me go back and edit. Oh well I guess
It may do better, because whilst Harry is loved around the world, Diana…. well she is dead, and we all love to remember the good in her and there was something magical about her. I am the same age as Diana, I remember her wedding, how much we loved her, how special all the photos were with her children…I also love Harry, but because he is still alive there is more to come.. a lot more I hope and a lot of good. I think this book may outsell Spare.
Charles Spencer did a eulogy in front of the Windsors that did not cower in fear. Of course they are worried about his book because Charles Spencer knew what was happening.
I’m sure he is disappointed about William calling his mother paranoid, especially when he was a child himself and doesn’t know what went on any more than Harry did.
That said I don’t think Charles Spencer will mention his nephews much except in a sympathetic way. Charles and Camilla do have things they should worry about though.
The British media expose themselves and the royals when the yap about someone, something destroying the royal family. Meghan goes to a Farmer’s Market or coffee to steal Charles’ thunder. Kate outshines Charles at the garden party.
You would think that being King of Freaking England would withstand a couple of DIL’s leaving the house or a book being released. How much worse can you get then being Camilla’s tampon?
I can only hope that Harry wrote a forward for the book.
@gingerhere
I 2nd this motion!!!
Harry writing the intro would be pretty inflammatory, so it would have to be both William and Harry and that seems most unlikely. I’ll bet that Harry either knows what’s in it or has an advance copy. Perhaps Spencer may have even written it without talking to either brother-considering their relationship. If he’s going to write about her childhood, he wouldn’t need to talk to the brothers anyway. I’ve never read Morton’s book, and don’t somehow feel the need to, but have pre-ordered this. If there is going to be a documentary about Diana around the 30th anniversary of her death, there will be the awkward situation of the writers and producers dealing with both Harry and William.
@tamsin
This post sounds very accommodating of and in service to Bulliam. Granted, he’s the heir and has always had greater privilege and afforded more benefit of doubt by everyone in that world. But when it came to Diana and how she loved her children, they were both equally deserving in her eyes.
I would hazard a guess that any consideration given to H by his uncle in terms of prior knowledge of the book or even if he had invited him to write a foreword, would also have been extended to Bully. But knowing Bully’s infamous intransigence, I would bet my bottom dollar that Bully would have agreed to participate only if H was NOT invited to participate.
“Harry writing the intro would be pretty inflammatory…” according to whom? This statement is so sycophant-coded.
And for the record, the book is not only about Diana’s childhood; apparently much of it is about how she was treated by the BRF and its co-conspirators in the britishShitMedia, both during and after her marriage and how her children were treated after her death. So I expect that Harry and Bully would have been invited to contribute their memories and their opinions. But as I said, I’m sure Bully was adamant that he would NOT contribute if H was invited to contribute. But I bet his uncle ignored that demand.
It would be glorious if Bully stuck to his guns and didnt cooperate with this book, while Harry did.
What’s inflammatory about a son writing the foreword to a book about his mother, written by his uncle, her brother? And why would the son who publicly called his mother paranoid and silenced her by demanding that an interview in which she expressed herself *in her own voice* and said she had no regrets be invited to share in such an honour?
The worst books I know are the ones in which the authors compartmentalise everything so that nothing flows and perspective is ruined as a result. He’s got a photograph of Diana as an adult on the front cover so it’s clear that even if he discusses her childhood, he also intends to talk about her life in adulthood.
It’s clear that the news of the Earl Spencer’s book will not have come as surprise to Prince Harry, considering how close they are. As to any potential documentary, writers and producers have made documentaries for decades based on factual research without needing to deal with any of the subjects – or even their families. There is nothing to worry about.
“Harry writing the intro would be pretty inflammatory…” according to whom?
@Kingston: I absolutely agree. Such an odd statement. And now I’m hoping that Harry has indeed written the foreword, and is thanked very warmly in the acknowledgements.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not do enormous damage to the monarchy. The Left Behinds did the damage. H&M talked and wrote about their own experience, which only exposed the actual culprits.
Bower also repeated the claim of which three of his royal gossipng peers and the Daily Fail were suit for, and was rewarded damages regarding the time and again repeated false claim that he ‘refused Diana refuged on his property. But Bower got even further during his GBNew appearance yesterday; he basically accused Charles Spencer of contributing to Diana’s death, because of that ”refusal’.’
I don’t think that it will take long fore this so-called lawyer without a job, receives a legal letter from Charles Spencer’s lawyers.
By the way, for those who want to read more about Charles Spencer’s three time win against the tabloid scribblers/the DF; a tweet with that info is pinned under need his bio on his X account. Check it out.

Digital Unicorn, You got it exactly right! I felt the same way when I looked at Princess Diana’s photos above, but you described the feeling perfectly! She really was something and someone special.
Just as a side note. The photo of Charles and Diana in the carriage was from the York wedding in 1986. I’m old and remember the day well. William, a page, was fidgeting and making faces, during the ceremony and Diana shot him a Mom look. It made me laugh then and now.
Four year old William, dumped into the spotlight.
If he hadn’t done the same to his own children, one might have had sympathy.
Yahoo!!! That didn’t take long at all. Go Earl Spencer!
Remember one thing though, it was../.. and still is the fwits, the windsors and the Whingeing Wails that set fire to the proverbial “rotten bridges” in the first place and the same lame shitheads will be trying to pressure, beg and threaten Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan into paying/rebuilding the bridge for them visit and do a victory lap, dressed in ice white ick, standing on the back of a “Fall of Singapore” type jeep just like that racist tripe they got their butts kicked for, and screaming for all their worth ” we’ve won, we’ve won” all the while Wiglet Wails turning, dribbling and swinging her pair of pure white, lacey underwear (panties of course) while trying to figure out how to use them as a slingshot!
I swear to goodness having being milk fed on the Queen (her successors and assorted rituals around them) until now, my thought process and patterns have sent all the stuff drummed into me – the moment the Queen died – my allegiance completely split. My thoughts are my own and having the misfortune of having to suffer through that treacle dribbling Wails bullshit – (both here and overseas) I totally understand the point of no return.
Good on Earl Spencer and thanks to all above that (Earl Spencer etc, Prince Harry, Meghan and their children have found and formed a bond forged in fire and smelted in Love.
Well done.
Will it damage it more than Ghislaine sitting on the Queen’s throne at Buckingham Palace?
