Vivienne Jolie published her name-change announcements for four weeks

This year has been huge for Angelina Jolie and her children. Knox and Vivienne turned 18 years old, which marked the official end of Angelina and Brad Pitt’s custodial fight/situation. The twins also graduated from high school, and Zahara graduated from Spelman. Alongside all of those milestones, Zahara and Maddox both filed their own name-change petitions around the same time. Both Z and Maddox are doing the same thing Shiloh did when she turned 18 years old: dropping “Pitt” from their surname and solely using “Jolie.” Well, as soon as Vivienne turned 18 in July, she also filed to change her name. Vivienne’s petition seems to be moving through the system pretty quickly, because she already published her name-change announcements in a newspaper.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne has taken the next step toward dropping “Pitt” from her name. According to Los Angeles County Superior Court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the 18-year-old — one of six children Pitt, 62, and Jolie, 51 share — now has proof of publication, confirming her intent to change her name.

Vivienne published a legal notice in the Los Angeles Daily Journal that she intends to change her name from “Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt” to “Vivienne Marcheline Jolie,” a required step in California law. Vivienne’s legal notice was published on July 24, July 31, Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, according to court documents.

The request has not yet been granted. Next steps include a court hearing, set for Nov. 2, to further discuss Vivienne’s petition. Court documents regarding Vivienne’s proof of publication noted that any person who objects to the name change “must file a written objection that includes the reason for the objection at least two court days before the matter is scheduled to be heard.” That person or persons must also appear in person at the court hearing.

Vivienne filed the initial petition requesting that her legal name be changed from “Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt” to “Vivienne Marcheline Jolie” in Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 21, per court documents obtained by PEOPLE at the time. Vivienne listed the reason for the name change as “personal” in those court documents.

Her newspaper ad also comes roughly one month after her siblings Zahara, 21, and Maddox, 25, filed the same notice to drop “Pitt” from their names and published similar notices in the L.A. Daily Journal in order to comply with California law. Zahara’s hearing regarding her name change petition is scheduled for Sept. 28, while Maddox’s hearing is scheduled for Sept. 14. Zahara dropped her father’s last name while walking across the stage at her graduation from Spelman College on May 17, 2026. She was listed as “Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt” on the commencement program, but her name was read as “Zahara Marley Jolie” when she walked across the stage.

“This is the result of a prolonged campaign of alienation of children against their parent,” a source close to Pitt told PEOPLE in July 2026. “It’s an incredibly sad reality, but it’s not surprising after years of one parent weaponizing the children against the other one with no regard for the consequences.”

[From People]

That last quote was the reason why I wanted to talk about this. Maddox, Zahara and Vivienne’s name-change stuff has been coming out in drips and drabs for months, and every time one of the kids made one of these moves, “sources close to Brad” would inevitably say something huffy about parental alienation. The problem right now is that Brad admitted in his Esquire cover profile that he’s been off the wagon for years, and that he’s back to drinking in a “professional” way. Sources close to Brad also said something about how his alcoholic relapse is okay because he has “discipline and self-awareness.” All of that is why Vivienne’s name-change publication has a different energy. Now we know, from Brad’s own drunk mouth, that he hasn’t been sober in years. This was never about parental alienation, it was about an alcoholic father’s children wanting absolutely nothing to do with him, especially given that he can’t even stay sober.

    Good for her.
I am curious to see what camp Pitt come out with this time…
On a personal level: I would have loved to erase my a-hole of a father name , but in Italy is a nightmare.

I’m sorry to hear about your situation.

I’m estranged from my father but still having his surname is fortunately offset by having a wonderful relationship with the rest of my family on his side (who also have nothing to do with him). What was a little odd is that my mother isn’t a British national and following their divorce many years back ended up having to hyphenate her original surname with her married surname (the joys of French bureaucracy) and more recently it made administrative sense for her to just use her original family name. I think it bothered her more than me that we no longer have the same family name at all but it did make me stop and think about the power of names.

I’m so happy that these young people are in a position to take charge of their identity like this.

I’m happy this is an option for them too.

when I was a kid I would have changed it but the process seemed so daunting to me in the 80s without assistance. also my mom’s family isnt really any better so I dont even know what I would have ultimately changed it to.

      • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

@Sarah, I had similar joy that the children can have that freedom of identity. Claim the legacy that loves you and that which you want to emulate. Good for them! ❤️

The courts take allegations of parental alienation seriously and she would not have retained full custody for 10 years given the legal fire power Brad possessed if she had badmouthed him maliciously to the kids. The reality is Brad never really sobered up and did not want shared custody of the children. He detested being told what to do when he was told he had to test sober to have visitation with the kids and rebelled like a spoiled child. He wanted to punish their mother by abusing the legal system more than he wanted relationships with his kids. He used his absenteeism to force her to be responsible for raising 6 kids solo while financially abusing her with a 10 year legal drama to continue to control and abu$e her after she left him.

I am wondering whether this obligation for the public notice also exists in other States? I am guessing it is only applicable if you reside in California so wondering whether Pax had a name change a long time ago, while residing somewhere else for a bit? But then again I was also sure Maddox and Zahara had already done so elsewhere and it turned out they had not yet.

    • Ariel says:

Yes it does exist in other states, for a variety of legal reasons.
The legal notice is often done in divorce cases if one spouse is in the wind and can’t be served.

    • Jegede says:

Suri Noelle did not have to. It only leaked when poling data got out.

    • liz says:

The publication requirement does exist, primarily so that debtors couldn’t outrun their obligations just by changing their name in days when records were kept on paper.

The requirement can be waived by the Court, and frequently is, particularly if the person changing their name is a victim of domestic violence or is transgender.

    • Oxie says:

It’s required in my state but thankfully you can’t easily look up court cases in my jurisdiction. You have to physical go to the courthouse to request them. It’s much easier to obtain exemptions as well and it’s not that expensive. I am surprised los angeles doesn’t have a better system. I am sure just the filing fee turns people off.

    • Natalie_K says:

I had to legally change my name to get a passport, due to my birth certificate not matching the way I spell my first name. I had to publish AND i live in Missouri. I think all US States have a similar requirement to keep you from changing your name to avoid legal situations or debt collection. Also for the genealogical record.

  4. Boxy Lady says:

I find it interesting that of the 4 kids who have done this name change petition, it’s the 2 biological daughters who filed as soon as they turned 18, while the other 2 waited longer.

  5. Frida’s Xolo says:

If I’m following this correctly, this means Pax and Knox are the only children who still use “Pitt”?

Interesting. None of my business obviously, and still, very curious!

    • Ariel says:

I feel like at Knox’s graduation, he was listed as Jolie. But they do seem to be the only ones who have not bothered – for whatever reasons- to do it legally/officially.

    • lisa says:

that is interesting to me to since Pax is the one with the Father’s Day message IG blasting BP a few years ago. but it might be too much of a PITA for him and I get that.

    • Nicki says:

Apparently Knox’s graduation listed him Jolie, and Pax has also dropped Pitt from his name. They haven’t done any paperwork (yet) but neither use the name any more.

  6. Oxie says:

That’s a good point kaiser. From that dumb interview he’s been drinking for at least 3 years now so the twins were still underage. The kids were never a priority and he never actually cared about getting sober (if he was even sober for those 7 years). As always hes taken 0 accountability for his behavior and the consequences it has caused.

Kat Tenbarge recently did a video with 2 other creators calling him him. I highly recommend!

  7. Aidee Kay says:

I like that the kids are each doing this on their own schedule, when they have the time and when they feel ready. It’s not happening oldest-to-youngest, Shiloh went first. They are undertaking this name change project when they want to and I have no doubt that Pax and Knox will do so in the future.
