Who is the new American Idol? (spoiler)

aiheader
If you have not watched last night’s finale of American Idol, you may want to avoid this post. But for those who want to know, Lee DeWyze was named the new American Idol last night in a two-plus-hour finale. Host Ryan Seacrest said that the race was very tight- the vote tally between the winner and runner up was a two percent margin. Even though I think Lee sucks and he only won because of his looks and not his voice, there were some fun highlights to the show, including an appearance by Alice Cooper (if only Adam Lambert had been there to sing with him!), Janet Jackson, who looked amazing and was sporting a short hairdo, and Joe Cocker, who sang with both finalists.

Lee DeWyze scored a stirring victory Wednesday night, as he beat out season-long favorite Crystal Bowersox in the Season 9 finale of “American Idol.” In the final showdown pitting a paint salesman versus a single mother, “Idol” voters threw their support behind the 24-year-old Illinois native, who had impressed the judges of late with his artistic growth throughout the course of the season. With his win, Lee ended Crystal’s bid to become the show’s first female winner since Season 6. It was a close contest: According to host Ryan Seacrest, less than two percent separated the finalists.

Lee’s victory proves that “Idol” nation tends to prefer the underdog to the season-long juggernaut. Lee was a fan favorite throughout the season, but really gathered steam in recent weeks. With his raspy voice and blue-collar appeal, he impressed early on, but lacked polish. It took a couple of strong vocal performances and some encouragement from the judges to get his confidence going. But when it did, Lee delivered some of this season’s most memorable performances. And no other contestant surged with as much momentum as he did in the run-up to the finals. Crystal’s defeat continued a trend that we’ve seen in recent years on the show, where voters rewarded the up-and-comer over the prohibitive favorite. Crystal sparkled early and seemed a shoo-in to win many weeks ago. But Lee continued to plug away and just kept stealing buzz for himself, while she settled into cruise control. Even despite her three masterful performances Tuesday night, it was clear that America was ready to reward the finalist who had shown the most dramatic improvement throughout the course of the season…

Lee’s win provides a satisfying finish to what has been, by most people’s accounts, an underwhelming year for the “Idol” franchise. This offseason will surely be a pivotal one for the show, as producers ponder Simon’s replacements and other tweaks to shore up flaggin ratings. We’ll have to wait and see how that all shakes out. As for Crystal, don’t shed too many tears. If past seasons are any indication, it doesn’t hurt to finish in second place. Given her talent and her determination to become a star, I’m certain we’ll be hearing big things from the big-voiced, dreadlocked hippie rockster. MamaSox will be just fine. It’s too early to tell what type of success Lee can expect as a recording artist (and whether he’ll go the way of David Cook or Taylor Hicks), but you can count on a heavily marketed pop album with a rock edge. There are no complaints here about the result: Lee’s a worthy champion who has demonstrated tremendous growth in the past many weeks. Many will argue about Wednesday night’s outcome, but most “Idol” viewers can agree: Lee’s as likable and humble a winner as we’ve seen.

Sorry, but I disagree about the outcome. I didn’t find it emotionally satisfying at all. I guess I am the only person who heard all the bad notes Lee hit week after week. The win only proves that “American Idol” is circling the drain, and the show really isn’t about finding the most talented person- it’s about finding the most marketable person.

Oh who cares that he hit a few bad notes! Did you know that he went to Alternative School for bad boys? Omg… he’s a teen dream. He’s the quintessential bad boy with the tender heart of gold. You know, the one you meet behind the gym whose mama is probably a drunk and his daddy ran off with a hooker. He’s the boy you have to save. He may work at a paint store and spent a few nights in jail but dammit he’s sincere. He’s the boy that you still remember kissing fifteen years later after your husband has gotten fat. 🙂

Our family found him the most forgettable contestant of the season. It took us until he was in the top five to be able to remember his name or even that he was still in the contest. AND he sings out of tune! Crystal, you was robbed!! Luckily, you don’t have to win to get a great career out of this (see: Adam Lambert).

Ok…I have some gripes about last night’s finale. First I should probably say that as a musician I avoided this show like the plague the first several seasons–it really is about picking the cutest or most marketable person–not the most talented. But I started watching last year because Adam Lambert intrigued me. Sadly the voters picked Vanilla (aka Kris Allen). But, I digress.

So, I’m a child of the 80s, and I love me some Hall & Oates and Janet like the rest of ’em. But…other than Christina Aguilera, how many of the performers last nite were actually relevant to today’s music? Even Janet Jackson hasn’t put out a hit in years and years. BTW, did anyone else feel bad that she was the only peron who lip-synched that nite? And is it me or does she sound and look more like Michael??And I adore Alanis Morissette, but she’s not exactly relevant right now, either. Most of the acts and songs from last night were popular years before most of this year’s contestants were even BORN. Did poor lil Aaron Kelly even know who Michael McDonald and Hall & Oates are?? The judges complain when the contestants don’t sound ‘young and fresh and relevant’ but then pair them all night with over-the-hill has-beens. (Yes, I love them all, but they’re still has-beens…)

However, while I’ve been a MamaSox fan the whole season, I think it’s actually BETTER for her career that she didn’t win. Lee is still figuring out his voice, what kind of music he wants to do, what kind of ‘artist’ he wants to become, etc, so he’ll be more malleable. Crystal has already figured all that out, and will stick to her guns and buck the Idol producers who will want to water down and commercialize her sound. She’s better off being courted by other labels and putting out the kind of record SHE wants–and she’ll know doubt get a contract offer.

    Just my two cents. 🙂

I always want the contestant to win, who no one believes will. It makes for better television.

My mom still watches this show and I happened to call her after the finale last night. She was really happy that Lee won because “he’s nice and cute.” And she was glad that Crystal didn’t win because she was “always complaining about being a single mother.” Now, I didn’t watch the show so I don’t know but I usually take everything my dear mom says with a grain of salt.

Regardless of whether or not what she said was true, it made me realize that she viewed it as a morality show and not a talent show and I think that’s why this show sucks. People vote for the one that they like the most regardless of whether or not he or she can sing. And that makes me dislike this show even more.

Love his story and happy for him. But I am even more happy that Crystal came in 2nd. This woman has a big future ahead of her.

As soon as her contract allows, most agents will be pitching her to work with her. She can actually sing, you know what you are getting with her and I could already plot out a promotion and tour and recording plan. And I don’t even work in the music business.

    On to Lillith Fair Crystal!

This is like the tenth year in a row (let me exagerrate) that the less interesting/less desirable candidate “won” the title. And who was it that was so very “marketable” last year? What’s that? Oh that’s right, we can only remember Adam Lambert’s name.

This show is so out of touch. They equate milque-toast with marketable — People like Crystal BowersoX actually have some draw. I don’t even watch this mess and I’ve heard of her name. She’s the one that will be a sell – how do they not get that after making the same mistake so many years in a row?

  8. zen says:

I didnt watch any of it this year but I saw some of it last night. I will definitely be checking out Crystal’s CD, she has a really unique voice and style about her. I wasnt impressed at all by Lee but I only saw a cpl performances. He didnt stand out as anything special to me but maybe he did his best in the earlier stages.

  9. skibunny says:

I agree with #6. Crystal has a big future ahead of her and I would buy her music. She looked right at home up there with Joe Cocker and Alanis Morrisette.

  10. MSat says:

BTW, here’s a great interview with Crystal: http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/05/27/crystal-bowersox-american-idol-finale/

I don’t see how anyone could call her “smug” or “arrogant.”

  11. Ron says:

America always votes bland. Regardless of the situation most of the time. Adam Lambert is headlining his own concerts this summer and Kris Allen is opening for Keith Urban. So who was the real winner?

  12. ogechi says:

Am happy for him, he deserves to win. Though i have not seen it yet.

  13. Sol says:

Good for Crystal.Second place contestants have more luck than actual winners.
    Except Kelly 🙂
In fact any place other than the winner has better luck.

  14. Sumodo1 says:

    Idol is FIXED.

  15. Anna says:

Don’t like her style of music, her look, her attitude, her constant playing the baby card…

  16. Confuzzle says:

It was 2% between them leading up to the top two. No vote numbers were announced. Which means Fuglee won by a landslide. Frauen vote for ugly white dudes who are tonedeaf once more. Women will never ‘win’ this crap ever again. Not that it will last much longer.
