Rue McClanahan has died of a “massive stroke” at the age of 76

People Magazine is reporting that Rue McClanahan has died at the age of 76. It’s tough out there for Golden Girls, damn. Her manager says that Rue died of a “massive stroke” – which, I’ve always thought, would be a pretty good way to go. One minute you’re there, the next, something crazy went on in your brain and you’re gone. This makes Betty White The Last Golden Girl Standing. Sad!

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan, 76, has died.

“She passed away at 1 a.m. this morning,” her manager, Barbara Lawrence, tells PEOPLE. She had a massive stroke.”

McClanahan, who played Blanche Deveraux on the still-popular ’80s sitcom Golden Girls, had suffered a minor stroke earlier this year while recovering from bypass surgery. Lawrence added that at the time of her death Thursday, McClanahan “had her family with her. She went in peace.”

Still in syndication, Golden Girls ran on NBC from 1985 to 1992. Only last year, McClanahan’s costar, Beatrice Arthur, died from cancer. Estelle Getty died in 2008. Surviving star Betty White is currently enjoying a remarkable resurgence in her career, having recently hosted Saturday Night Live.

Born in Healdton, Okla., Rue lived in six towns by the time she was 8. (Her father was a road builder who moved from one project to another.) She found solace in acting (“the only thing I ever wanted to do”) and after four years at the University of Tulsa moved to New York, where she worked as a part-time file clerk while trying to find jobs in the theater.

According to Wikipedia, Rue did off-Broadway productions, Broadway productions and soap operas before being cast in Maude. Rue and Bea Arthur’s friendship went back to the early 1970s, and they remained friends until Bea’s death last year. Rue is best known for her role as the funny, slutty, amazing Blanche Devereaux. She was a supporter of PETA, and she was a lifelong Democrat. She endorsed Barack Obama! Damn, this is really sad!

What does her endorsement of Obama have to do with anything? Had she been a lifelong Libertarian or Republican, would her death have been less sad? I don’t understand the implication.

I knew Betty White would be the last one left. She was the Ringo Starr of the Golden Girls. And I’ll bet you 10 bucks Paul McCartney passes away before Ringo.

I loved Golden Girls…it’s one of those shows that anyone can watch and find a joke to laugh at. My younger brother likes Golden Girls. My mom AND my dad like Golden Girls. Even my boyfriend likes Golden Girls! It was an amazing show like that.

We all love you, Rue. <3

It’s a sad day. RIP beautiful Lady.

  54. omondieu says:

It’s so strange how the Golden Girls have all been passing away within a year of each other, at around the same time of the year, later spring/early summer.

    Estelle Getty – July 2008
Bea Arthur – end of April 2009
    Rue McLanahan – June 2010

  55. canadianchick says:

  58. Wresa says:

I don’t know if I’ve ever been truly sad over a celebrity death, but I think this is one of those times.

Rue, I’ll always remember you in two ways:
Wearing an emerald-green sequined ball gown with gold jewelry on The Golden Girls, and as the original cougar who married young Patrick Duffy in that cheesy 90’s Lifetime movie I saw 3,000 times.

  59. Kim says:

May she rest in peace. I loved her on Golden Girls – a true talent.
