Robert Pattinson is exhausted, wants Joaquin Phoenix’s career

sparkles11

Robert Pattinson had a profile in the New York Times a few days ago, and it’s an interesting piece. For all of his good-natured promotion, you can tell that the Twilight Saga is really draining the crap out of all of the stars. Still, Pattinson isn’t really bitching about it, he just sounds exhausted, and like there’s nothing new he can really say about his role as the most sparkly of the Sparklepants Vampires. The full piece is here, and here are some of the better quotes:

On Twilight burnout: “It can get a little boring,” he said softly over coffee at the Four Seasons hotel here, referring both to playing an unchanging vampire and to chewing over the Cultural Importance of It All. “The good news is that the whole thing is done in seven months.”

He thinks Kristen Stewart handles it better: “Kris is better about dealing with photographers than I am.”

Sparkles, Philosopher King: “I’ve learned to let it go a bit, but I’m still really bothered by it,” he said. “The more you are exposed, the more people irrationally hate you, I think we reached a point, a peak, with ‘New Moon’ where the stories became so saturated into the culture that it started to feel normal. It’s like the tabloids don’t know what to write anymore because they’ve used up all their scandals.”

He admires Joaquin Phoenix: Mr. Pattinson talks about a desire to play “characters that are not parodies,” and he would love to do a comedy with Todd Solondz (“Welcome to the Dollhouse”). He would like to have a career like Joaquin Phoenix, somebody who makes unorthodox roles pop.

On working on Water for Elephants: Mr. Pattinson has clearly enjoyed working on something else. He lit up when talking about the shoot, mentioning a scene in which a lion had to bite his arm and another where he had to spend hours shoveling horse manure — an unsettling detail given the grimy condition of his fingernails. “It feels like everyone is an Oscar winner except me,” he said of the cast and crew.

On playing a character that doesn‘t age: “I hope it doesn’t start looking ridiculous.”

[From The New York Times]

The piece quotes various producers and Hollywood experts extensively, asking them if Pattinson is going to have much of a career beyond Twilight. The experts seemed to think he would, if he tried to fashion his career after Leo DiCaprio, which makes me sad that the “experts” can’t think of another star who was youngish tween-friendly star who transitioned into a full-fledged adult career. I like Pattinson’s suggestion of Joaquin Phoenix, although in Joaquin’s defense, he was always a gritty, independent kind of actor before he got Gladiator and changed the face of his career. Do we really want to see Pattinson dirty it up? I don’t know. He’s just so pretty and sparkly. Even though I didn’t see Remember Me (yet – I will see it at some point), I think that was probably a good character for him, it was modern and he got to be a romantic lead without it being about sparkles and colored contacts and sh-t. And I actually think the fact that he’s English will work well for him, honestly. The British actors think about their careers differently, and I’ve always felt it’s less about ego for them, they just work because they get offered projects and why not? It’s only in Hollywood that actors obsessively “plan” their career paths, I think.

Rob leave Hollywood while u still can.

  2. Maggie says:

Did Stewart’s PR team tell him to say that she handles the photographers better?
Because that’s the biggest joke of all.
Hasn’t he seen her behaviour in Australia or the constant whining in interviews?

  3. ctkat says:

    Other than Leo, there’s…well, hmm…

Johnny Depp transitioned from “21 Jump Street” to adult roles

Jason Bateman went from “The Hogan Family” to the career he has now, although there was a big lull in his work

Christian Bale started at 11 with “Empire of the Sun”, then did the “Newsies” route, and now has an enviable career

    That’s all I got!

  4. Katalina76 says:

He thinks Kristen handles it better? Is he slow? This is the girl who just compared having her picture taken to rape. He must be really infatuated with her if he actually believes she handles anything fame-related well.

  5. sarcasma says:

He doesnt do anything for me.. i don get him. at all.

  6. meme says:

gee, were all the twilight stars FORCED to make the movies?

  7. bite me says:

honestly i don’t really see any of these twilight people having much of a career afterwards…maybe rob and kris can take some acting classes together, that might help a bit

  8. LOVE ANGELINA says:

He doesn’t need to leave Hollywood, I have never watched a single Twilight movie because the woman who wrote it totally f*cked up vamps. They don’t sparkle you idiot and they don’t come out in the sun light either…she just effed vampires for a bunch of impressionable tween losers…anywho I think he is adorable and I think he will have a great career, of course he will have to do some independent work and I think he wants to. So it will be great to see him more adult.

  9. Allie says:

he looks so nice and CLEAN now 🙂 i’m liking this…

  10. Bullett says:

Just saw “Remember Me” a few days ago. It was T-H-E most boring film E-V-E-R. The word ‘slow’ doesn’t even begin to describe the excruciating pace of that movie. Even more importantly though, Remember Me seemed to make it quite clear that this fellow just isn’t all that much of an actor. It’s sort of funny that the ‘producers and experts” mentioned above have all of these ideas related to a career path for him, and not a one of them mentions the acting lessons that might actually save him.

I know, I know, some of you ladies just go into another zone entirely whenever he arches his brow, but maybe he should be looking at a career as a male model instead of deluding himself into believing that he’s been put on the planet to be the next James Dean. He’s not, never was, and never will be.

  11. denise says:

    @ Love Angelina

I totally agree with you on the point that Stephanie Meyer messed up the whole vampire persona.
To me , there is no better vamp movie than Interview with the Vampire. Anne Rice gets it right.

  12. amanda says:

LOVE him. Love the shorter haircut! I also loved the book Water for Elephants and am psyched they are making a movie out of it. Should be good!

  13. bellaluna says:

I like Joaquin’s choice of roles, for the most part. He is just such an intense, awesome actor. If you haven’t seen “We Own the Night” GET IT and watch. Mark Wahlberg (love him, too!) is in it, along w/ Eva Mendes and Robert Duvall.

Joaquin’s life decisions, however, seem sketchier. Careful what you wish for, Sparkles.

  14. Vee says:

@Bullett – I have a different opinion about Remember Me. Agreed with you on pace, but I think Rob showed a wide range of emotions, his acting was believable. Critics panned the movie, but many praised Rob’s acting.
I don’t doubt he’s exhausted. I would be. He’s been working nonstop. And yes, thankfully the Twilight stuff ends soon, well, playing the character of Edward, he’ll still have Breaking Dawn promotion.
And his quote about Kristen handling the photographers better is wrong. The balcony scene in Australia where she gave the double bird was, in the words of his father, vulgar.

  15. Patty says:

Vee: True about his father’s email where he complains to him about vulgar celebrities. That was definitely a dig at Stewart’s embarrassing behaviour that she has always displayed but only recently hit the media.

  16. elaine benes says:

@bellaluna, yes!! “We Own the Night” is an awesome movie. Joaquin kills it.
The first movie I’d seen him was “Parenthood”. He must have been around thirteen years old but did a great job. I think he went by the name Leaf Pheonix (?)

  17. Roasted says:

You know the ”Emotion Chart” they made for Steven Seagal? They should make one for Pattinson, never seen such an emotionless actor. I don’t think he will be around once the twilight ends, because he is already tired of the Hollywood life etc.

I’m counting the days until the whole twilight sht is over.

Also lol @ the ‘Kristen handles photogs better’. She is an example of someone who can NOT handle the photogs.

  18. ctkat says:

@ elane benis: Joaquin Phoenix changed his name to Leaf as a kid, to match his siblings (River and Rain)- he later reverted to his given name.

  19. Bullett says:

@Vee – I don’t necessarily disagree that he is able to show some range of emotion, and some believability. The problem is for doing just what actor’s are supposed to be able to do, he has been catapulted into this worldwide fame. I see it as a huge disconnect.

Some perspective; By the time Pattinson is finished with this Twilight stuff (in another year or so) he will be 25/26 years old. At the age of 25 James Dean was in Rebel Without A Cause and East of Eden. At the age of 27 Brando had filmed Streetcar Named Desire. To me, in the greater scheme of things, it’s like comparing a soap opera actor that has been granted worldwide celebrity and wealth, with some of the greatest acting talents ever. Something is just wrong with that picture.

  20. Katija says:

I hate when the Twilight kids diss the franchise. Yes, it’s dumb as shit, and yes, the rest of us are all mocking it. However, the difference is that we didn’t earn fame and fortune from it. These kids shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds.

  21. Bella Mosley says:

Considering Vampires are not real, no one can mess up the vampire persona lol!

All Meyer did was put a new spin on it that apparently a lot of people enjoy. No one has to read the books or watch the movies so if you don’t like them – turn away.

So funny to me people get all caught up in what is factual about something that is make believe.

  22. Strawberry says:

He is sexy. Time will tell if he can act, or sustain a legitimate career.

  23. Jeri says:

The Twilight saga does seem to push these young people very hard, maybe in a hurry to get the movies out before age changes them, but I can see it would wear on them & make it difficult to live any sort of life.

The Pirates movies did not come out so close together.

  24. funny girl says:

@june and @patty You guys are both seriously delusional if you think Rob’s father was talking about Kristen in a derogatory way and that Rob would even mention it on television if he were. Sounds like you two are jealous heffers who think Edward is going to climb in your window if only “Bella” were out of the way.

By the way, Rob’s acting is a joke. You want to talk about PR people…his management must be paying a fortune for this type of article. Any respectable insider would say the jury is still out on his acting abilities. He was laughable in Remember Me.

  25. stoic says:

Pattinson is the sort of actor that can fit into any time period or genre of film. He can do grungy, geeky, suave con man, desperate romantic, you name it he can do it. They havent even tapped into hsi excellent music ability yet and a musical film role would really help him get an even wider fanbase.
Not many actors have that warmth about them. You root for him to do well. I want to see him as a leading actor in films for many years.

  26. Patty says:

funny girl: Hey notfunnygirl, Stewart won’t climb into your bed just because you defend her on the internet and have no better argument than to think I want to f*** Pattinson.

Stewart is the most embarrassing young celebrity who tries to make people buy her rude gestures and ignorant comments as cool.

Regarding Pattinson’s acting, he and every other actor has better skills then that eyerolling Bitchface Supreme who only shakes with her head, runs with her fingers through her hair, blinks 20x per minute, stutters and wouldn’t be able to form a coherent sentence if someone held a gun to her head.

  27. Vee says:

@Bullett – yes, Rob has been catapulted to international stardom playing a one dimensional character. It’s nuts. I think he’d agree. But I don’t blame Rob, I blame those that project the Edward role onto Rob. He wants to be a credible actor and with every new role he takes the steps necessary to achieve that. Have you seen Little Ashes? He did a credible job there, it was entertaining.
@stoic – great point. Rob seemingly can play characters in different time periods, a good plus as an actor. I’m really looking forward to him in Bel Ami and Water for Elephants.
And, I in no way think Rob or his Dad was implying anything about Kristen when he read the email about vulgar actors. That would be crass and I don’t see the Pattinson’s being back handed like that. Bottom line, Rob was raised right, with a strong Mom and Dad. It shows, he’s a lovely guy!

  28. normade says:

He should model his career after Depp!! I could see him doing quirky character roles, I don’t think he’s a pretty boy at heart

  29. Anj says:

    Twitarded.

Anyway he is a terrible actor and should retire instead of going to make straight to dvd b-films after bilight. Better have a successful teen career instead of a flop adult career.

  30. Sarcasm says:

    Anj: says Nostradamus

  31. dina says:

I think Rob will do well, b/c he is different and unique, and he does need to move on from Twilight, they all do. PPl get burn out, look at Toby Mc. and he only did 2 Spiderman!

  32. palomino says:

Look, everybody! Rob fans and Kristen fans are once again playing fast and loose with facts and taking wild, imaginative leaps in order to attack their respective idols and each other. How fun!

  33. Dingles says:

The difference is Leo DiCaprio did AMAZING work prior to Titanic. This Boy’s Life, The Basketball Diaries, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape to name a few.
DiCaprio has raw talent, and as charming as Sparkles is he hasn’t shown anything approaching that level of talent. It would be great to see him evolve as an actor and really surprise everyone though. He’s so nice to look at…

Now that I think about it, I would have loved to see 23-year-old DiCaprio’s take on the Edward character. I bet he would’ve been amazing.

  34. chris says:

I think he’s a good actor. He’s definitely an actor I’m rooting to make it. His personality is just really fantastic and it would be a shame to have to lose a personality like his. Most actors and actresses are such dullards. He’s fun without being scandalous. He’s just normal but he’s really entertaining.

  35. therese says:

Rob will go a long way as an actor and as a person. He is a picture of a young man with a matured mind, well focused, and determined to succeed in whatever he does. Rob is a reflection of a well bred person thanks to his loving and very supportive family. He remains humble unaffected by fame, but is smart and intelligent enough to realize that this all temporary and that he must be prepared at all times. For those who opposed my views, just give this man a chance to prove what he is capable of becoming.

  36. piglatinforcows says:

@denise i totally agree. i loved interview with the vampire. now that was sexy. that was ‘love’ presented differently.

twilight is just a movie about hormones and teens mistaking lust for true love. sorry, folks, just not realistic.

  37. Michael says:

    Great couldn’t stop laughing..

  38. Michele09 says:

Before some crazy Twi fan takes my head off let me say I adore Rob’s beauty and sweet nature and I LOVED the books but here is the reality of this situation. I just saw Eclipse and the only people who say Rob and Kristins acting was good in it are just in the “obsessed phaze” The acting is NOT good as a matter of fact it’s so bad at times I found myself cringing and shaking my head at Rob’s lifelesss acting,no emotion and SAME grimaced smile and look he has in the entire movie and in almost EVERY scene. I’m not writing this to slam him but because I’d love to see him have a career after these Twi films die out but he won’t if he doesn’t hown his craft, take it seriously and GROW as an actor. I heard him say in a interview he’s never taken or studied acting because he doesn’t want anyone to judge it. He NEEDS to let that attitude go and develop as an actor. It’s what actors. Arrogance and ego in Hollywood only get you lost in the shuffle. I should know I live there and am in the same industry. Teenage girls will get him tickets and movie sales but the academy goes by good acting and will get you an Oscar.

I believe Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart really can’t act. I also believe that if Kristen’s mother had not been involved in the Hollywood industry, Kristen would not be acting in any movies right now. Robert and Kristen should be counting their blessings that they were blessed with amazing luck and fortune during tough economic times when most people can’t find work. Kristen and Robert show no charisma in their acting, and they are nowhere near the worth of their paychecks. 41 million a movie…WOW! They were paid to portray believable characters, and they both failed miserably at it.

They are just riding the tidal wave because they know their lack of talent will eventually creep up and cut their careers short. Someone needs to tell Robert Pattinson that he was paid to act like a vampire, not a robot. Unless he’s a robotic vampire, which I’m sure is not written anywhere in the script or the novel.

Again I write this because I’d love to see him get much better. He has the potential to be Oscar material and because the teenage girls will find a new obsession after the movies die out and then what!?
