Lady Gaga: “You won’t ever catch me in sweatpants and a hoodie”

fp_5324053_lady_gaga_cwny_070210

Here are some new photos of Lady Gaga, celebrating the 4th of July holiday the only way she knows how, with fireworks coming out of her boobs at a concert in Boston on Friday night. If I’m not mistaken, some of these costumes look like new additions. Eh. Anyway, Gaga has a new interview with The Daily Mail this weekend (full piece here). It’s written in the first person, as if Gaga is just being quoted mid-rant. Some of the quotes are interesting, though… Gaga talks about how she’s not a dumb blonde and how none of this is about money, and that you’ll never catch her in sweatpants and a hoodie. Hm… but what if the sweatpants were studded and leather? And the hoodie was made out of Miss Piggy? WHAT THEN?

If you’re going to be different, make sure you’re smart.
Don’t ever make the mistake that you’re a dumb blonde or a pushover. I was a grade-A student and I went to a really top school in New York where the children of middle-class parents are expected to achieve at everything. I started piano at the age of four and I passed every grade with top marks. I wanted to be smart because I wanted to be able to control things. My career isn’t about other people’s ideas and decisions. It’s about my decisions, my vision, my inspirations. I listen to other people, but I’m smart enough to know what to take notice of. Never underestimate the importance of education.

Everything I do is about getting a reaction.
My aim in what I do is to push buttons, make people do a double take. People will either love me or they will hate me. That’s what I want. No artist should ever want to be bland. I dress to get people to stare, I say a lot of things for shock value and I do a lot of things to deliberately unsettle people – like going around in my underwear in the middle of winter. It gets a big reaction.

I am Lady Gaga 24/7 – I have no day off.
You have to live your art, as it’s all about integrity. You won’t ever catch me in sweatpants and a hoodie. Even in bed I wear my pearls and high heels. I’m always looking for more inspiration, new barriers to push.

Fame should never be about the money.
Money is completely boring to me. It means nothing, except it feeds my art. Every penny I make goes back into the Haus of Gaga. My Haus of Gaga is something like Andy Warhol’s Factory. I have a small bunch of really creative people who make up the Haus and they work with me on my sets, my costumes, my jewellery and the concept of Gaga. It’s my team and we come up with crazy ideas and make them happen. I do make a lot of money, but I don’t want to own flash cars; I want to make Lady Gaga the biggest star in the world, and that takes a lot of work and creativity.

I never let a man come before my career.
My greatest sacrifice is love. I’ve only ever been in love once, and I had to walk away because I had to put my career first. He wanted me to stay at home and be with him; I wanted to be out there trying to make it on stage. It was a huge lesson for me, but it’s also a source of sadness. God gave me a gift with music, but if you have gifts you also have weaknesses. My weakness is not being able to make relationships work. I’ve dated artists, drummers, guitarists, architects, but there’s something in me that stops me ever putting a relationship before my work. I guess I always think my music is never going to roll over in bed one morning and tell me that it doesn’t love me any more. I have to believe the music is worth the sacrifice.

Drugs can destroy you.
I don’t like to talk about it too much, but there were drugs in my teenage years. The reason I don’t like to talk about it is I wouldn’t want anyone else to do it. I believe it could have ruined everything. I was a middle-class girl who wanted to rebel and discover all these different sides to life. It was my dad who pulled me back. I wanted to show my parents I was completely wild. My dad thought I’d lost it. He came to see me and told me if I didn’t pull back I would lose everything. That completely shook me, because even though I wanted to rebel, my parents are the people I respect most in this world. I didn’t want to lose my father’s respect, so I stopped.

As a performer I’m outrageous and wild, but as a person I have a very strong moral code.
I would never cheat on a man; I believe in honesty and integrity. The most important people in the world to me are my family, and the one thing I miss when I’m touring is having time with my parents and my little sister. I am Lady Gaga because in private I’m a lady. I’m a feminist who believes in the importance of femininity. Don’t be fooled by the way I look – underneath all this I know exactly who I am and what my boundaries are. They are all important to me.

Never be afraid to say sorry.
To this day I feel guilt about what I put my parents through when I was younger. I’ll call my mother out of the blue and say, ‘Mum, I’m so sorry about what I did.’ They’re very proud of me today, but I wouldn’t have their pride if I hadn’t listened to them and told them I was sorry. It’s as important to acknowledge your mistakes as it is to get credit for your victories.

[From The Daily Mail]

As I’ve said before, I like Gaga, I really do. But I’m getting a little tired of her. I get that her deal is that she’s always “on” and that her life is a performance and it’s all for the fans, et cetera. But I would love to see Gaga in a hoodie and sweatpants. I would love for her to go on a holiday for a few months and not give any interviews, and I think it would be good for her too. Oh, well. It’s not going to happen. As soon as she finishes up this tour, she’s got a new album coming out in the beginning of next year. You know it’s going to be all Gaga, all the time then too.

All that being said, you know what I miss? I miss that diamond-encrusted lobster headpiece. She needs to bring that sh-t back.

  1. JC126 says:

How is she going to keep up the costume changes and assorted crap if she wants to keep her career going? It’s tiring just to watch her switch dumb outfits so fast, and it seems like a colossal waste of money.

  2. Liana says:

What a shame that she doesn’t trust her “art” enough to simply be herself and not some lame creation that will actually become passe as time goes on.

  3. yeahRight says:

“You won’t ever catch me in sweatpants and a hoodie. Even in bed I wear my pearls and high heels.”

I’ve never heard such a load of male bovine feces in all my life. Her image consultant must be proud.

Like George Carlin said (GRHS), the best and greatest American export is bullshit.

  4. M says:

“What a shame that she doesn’t trust her “art” enough to simply be herself and not some lame creation that will actually become passe as time goes on. ”

But maybe that is herself. Look at Victoria Beckham, I think she said once she always wears heels. Never flats. Is she still living up to her image of “Posh Spice”…or she just being herself as well?

  5. Trillion says:

Liana: Not all artists are ascetic beings dedicated to minimalism. I often admire those kinds of musicians (Cat Power, The Kills) , but I can appreciate the other end of the spectrum too. Clearly, Gaga’s idea of art is not to your liking at that’s OK, but she has a consistent, intelligent idea behind what she’s doing and I think that’s interesting. I think other artists in the same vein do have enduring cultural relevance. There will always be the fringe element in society that will value that over the the masses, who prefer things to be more comfortable and conformist. Klaus Nomi, Nina Hagen, Laurie Anderson, Kembra Pfahler are her predecessors. Not Buffy St. Marie, although they have the same nose.

  6. Liana says:

I wouldn’t put Laurie Anderson in the same milieu as Lady Gaga. I actually am not NOT a fan of Gaga. I like her music. Unfortunately, for me, the persona actually overshadows the music and much of it is lost in fake blood and lobster heels.

  7. Amneh says:

I love her! I consider her as a great if a little unconventional role model. No sex/drug/nude scandals and she is very dedicated to her music, public persona and the causes she believes in (like gay rights).

  8. PrettyTarheel says:

The quote about love being sacrificed is extremely heartfelt. As for her need to constantly come up with new ideas, as long as she pours out the music, she can rock whatever lobster insanity she would like. Although, I appreciate Kaiser’s take on the hoodie and sweatpants. Kaiser, perhaps the Haus of Gaga is looking for a new team member???

  9. Ally says:

What is her “ART”? Dressing in crazy costumes?
Bjork has done it, Madonna has done etc.
    What is her music about?

  10. lisa says:

@ Trillion – you think that Lady Gaga is the fringe? Really? She’s NOT conformist? Everything about her to me screams “tool of the entertainment industry”.

This woman is self-destructive. Sure, sacrifice in art is a long-standing tradition, but it’s still not a healthy one. Those who love her support a delusional idea of perfection or expression. Underneath all this supposed rebellion is a girl-woman who is desperate to be seen and talked about. Any talent she has is masked by this self-absorbed, manic behavior. Her music is quite awful, but her career has taken off because of her “shock value”, and because the way she represents herself as self-important and wise. If you were to take a step back and really feel out the intentions behind her ideas, they would seem off. And you’d be right.

  11. a says:

i like her. she does what she wants… maybe inspires others to be more creative and doesn’t seem to be hurting any one. plus, speaks out on gays rights. she’s alright with me.

thanks for the interview and new photos

  12. junipergreen says:

Huh? Weren’t there pics of her at a gym here in Boston yesterday in workout shorts and a tank top? Isn’t that the equivalent of sweats and a hoodie?

I’m getting a bit sick of her pretentiousness. I get what she’s doing and I think it’s cool, but come on. I do NOT believe she wears heels in bed. Liar!

  13. Orbit says:

Most of the time, a hoodie and sweats would be an improvement. I saw her live concert on TV. She’s dreadful and her pop toons suck.

  14. FUTURESTARdelux says:

    blah blah blah…
Real singers that are amazingly creative and believe in their music like Bjork & Kate bush go away for years (Kate took 12 years between her last 2 albums) to make something amazing and then bring it to peoples attention.
Bjork for example always wears crazy stuff but it never overshadows her music and everything she does is 100% her, she would never conform like Gaga does.
She was a normal looking Jazz singer until that got her nowhare so she bowed to her label and became a “shock” character but the shock has worn off.
The reason she won’t go away for a while is because she knows she’s a fake and if she does annother fake will take her place….

@M:4 “posh spice” is a nickname not a persona, Victoria just dresses like a woman in heels, diamonds etc that is her style, lobsters on heads and crosses on vaginas is just famewhoring lol

  15. She is young and having fun with the opportunities life has given her. She is very talened and has a lot of enegy, is that so bad?

  16. Some people are addicted to drugs, some are addicted food, some computors and some work.

  17. Jover says:

Agree ally, lisa and orbit, not only Madonna, but MJ, Elton John, Grace Jones, Kylie Minogue, Roisin Murphy, Boy George, David BOwie, Kiss, 70s disco queens, soul and funk artists, have all down costume stage shows much much better than Lady Caca. Anyone who says she’s reinventing music hasn’t listened to much over the last 4 decades. Most of her “songs” are written by other people, google her discography for the song writing credits; and there are youtube postings of her 4-5 years ago in NY clubs trying to make it as a rocker chic. She failed and the studio retooled her image. Interestingly, even as pop music, as many have posted, her songs aren’t even fun like say Madonna’s early stuff. A fake and a poser hopefully on the backside of her “career.” BTW, in that second pic she looks like a WWE female wrestler.

  18. jc126 says:

Hey Junipergreen, I’m in Boston too! And yes, she was wearing shorts and a T at the gym yesterday.
I have a visceral reaction of disgust when Lady Gaga was wearing those costumes that covered her face. While obviously she chose them and could take them off, my stomach immediately turns at the sight of someone’s face being covered up, particularly a woman.

  19. Blaster says:

Well, this outfit is certainly not sweatpants and hoodies but it’s definitely close. She looks normal. Baby and all:

    http://bit.ly/biIZxa

She should do more of this and less of this: http://bit.ly/buqv24

  20. Dr. Remulak says:

Seriously, let’s see what else she has before we anoint her as some kind of legend. She’s released one hit album. I could spend the rest of the day listing every artist in pop music history that had one good song or album and then faded away. Yeah, she has a good thing going for herself right now, but let’s not pretend pop music fame is guaranteed to be permanent. It’s not as if she invented the costume change.

  21. Feebee says:

But when all she does is crazy costuming she does become bland. Does she have more talent than Madonna? I don’t know, can’t really hear her over the screams of her appearance. Madonna’s voice has always been average but it didn’t matter because of her image but even she knew the importance of not being on 24/7.

And I’m sick of pretentious people putting down trackpants, hoodies and other comfortable apparel. Chill out!

@M, Vicky Beckham has been photographed in flats, without makeup and cracking a smile. All non-Posh Spice bits it would seem. However her PS-ness is to cover a bit of a dearth of artistic talent in at least the singing and dancing arenas. I’d still take her over Gaga anyday.

  22. lola lola says:

    She reminds me of Cher.

  23. Messenger says:

Didn’t Gaga go the conventional route and nobody was buying? so she reinvented herself as this walking art exhibit and it worked? I have no idea how she sings or what she’s about, but you gotta give her points for creativity, if nothing else. Do I buy her schtick? Nope. I prefer the no hype straight forward approach to everything in my life, but she;s raking it in, so she finally found her audience. I liked the photo of her as a man. She looks haunted.

  24. Bobby the K says:

    So what?

  25. hatsumomo says:

FUTURESTAR, Chinese Democracy took 12 years to make and I dont think it was that good. No one else did either.

  26. Stephy2185 says:

Is it just me, or does she look like she gained a little of the weight she very rapidly lost?
Maybe I’m crazy but I think she’s looking healthier than she has in a while.

  27. yeahRight says:

    @Messenger
I think you have a good point and would like to add my 2 cents (more like a dollar):
There are a lot of folks that give her and many other pop stars way too much slack in their insistence that their look, statements and artistic choices in music are somehow all part of who they are and what they believe in. Pop stars are a grouping of many people. They are a brand and like all brands they usually comprise of many talented people behind them pulling the strings. She is merely the head in front of a complex business enterprise.

To prove the point, one of her claims is that she is an embodiment of her art. That is who she is. Well, if that is the case, her “art” was completely different a few years ago when she did not dress flamboyantly and her music was nothing but covers.

  28. mO says:

Damn! This girl is very contradictory. “I am Lady Gaga 24/7” but I act differently as a person and performer. bla. bla. bla.

    Honey, sit down please.

  29. ! says:

Hey Gaga, we don’t care. “I’m such an artist, I live it every day, I suffer for my art” blah blah blah. You’re just a fucking pop star, you’re not curing cancer.

  30. ! says:

Plus, as many pointed out, the crazy costume changes is nothing new. Elton John did it much better than you, sweetie. Not to mention, I look at all those concert outfits and every single one of them wears her, not the other way around. Hint: flashy clothes doesn’t make up for a stunning lack of personality. Neither does acting self important.

  31. Dhavy says:

I always thought she was a Madonna wanna-be. At least when Madge reinvents herself it’s original and fresh. There’s nothing fresh about a headpiece a funny looking shoes.

  32. original kate says:

    blah blah oh la l-a
    caca la di d-a
    rah rah siss boom b-a…

    oh yeah…she’s brilliant.

  33. scotchy says:

all i have to say is that Lady Gaga has neither the talent nor the creativity nor the artistic merit that Laurie Anderson,Klaus Nomi et all.
they actually created something new, she essentially makes cover music and dresses up in outfits and says ridiculous things.

she is not worthy of being mentioned in the same statement.
ok rant over, will no longer look a gaga threads and will patiently wait until she fades

  34. Liana says:

at least she’s not screaming and wailing like Diamanda Galas. *shudders*

Please no one introduce her to that!!!

  35. DD says:

that has to be the most grotesque picture I’ve seen of Lady Gaga yet and I’ve seen many.

  36. DetRiotgirl says:

Memo to Lady Gaga: Doing the same thing over and over again is bland, even if things you’re doing over and over again involve gluing things to your head and lighting your boobs on fire. Yes, that means you.

Her “me, me, me” routine is so boring! I can’t wait for the public to move on from this one trick costume store.

  37. Guest says:

Her talent is amazing. Her songs are incredible. Love her. I think she is great for young fans. Talks about love for family and her values. She shows that you can be “wild” but live a good life. What I am really tired of in Hollywood is people who pretend to be “saints” Gaga is not that – she says it like it is. Good for her. And please don’t go away. I love listening to her new music and am excited about her new record. What would the world be without Gaga doing her thing! A little less bright for sure.

  38. Aussie Mama says:

    Great interview!

  39. Jenny says:

Like a few of the above people said earlier, she is not very talented, and can’t sing. I think that art at the core is about beauty, and i see absolutely nothing beautiful in any of her work, not even in the contrived angst and attempts at shocking people with horror images of blood and gore. It is hollow and empty and boring….it just sucks.
I don’t see her being around for very long. It is just not genuine. none of it.

  40. Jenny says:

you know how you feel like when someone is talking to you like you are an idiot?
That is how i feel when i hear lady gaga’s “music”. i feel insulted.

  41. sonola trip says:

    @ Jover

I agree with you, and I’d add Cher and Bette Midler to the list of artists that were doing this long before Gaga and doing it much better.

  42. Holly says:

@Original Kate: thank you thank you thank you. I had a friend tell me the other night that she thinks Lady Gaga is “legit”. I nearly puked. Some of the costumes are pretty amazing, sure, but unless someone can prove to me that she makes/designs all her costumes herself and she writes all of her music herself, then she’s the same as any other hyped-up performer. She may know how to keep an audience, but that doesn’t mean she’s got any real musical talent. I say boo.

  43. This girl disgusts me. Who does she think she is? Get over yourself.

  44. ME says:

I respect her more after seeing this interview. It’s nice to know she’s grounded, respectable, and loves her parents. She values education and the importance of not doing drugs.

  45. Bee says:

@yeahright LOL! I’m going to start using that bovine feces line myself. My feelings about Lady Gaga are like a pendulum: I swing from love to hate quite often. I loved Bad Romance & Telephone, and hated Alejandro. I adore her performances but hate her interviews. Gah, this “lady” is often so full of sh*t she needs a colonic.

  46. Dani says:

She just proved she’s a liar.

Before she was “famous” she was on Boiling Points, a reality show on MTV that was kind of like candid camera. The people didn’t know they were being filmed, and the goal of the show was to see if they could get the unknowing people to keep their cool in infuriating situations. Gaga happened to end up as one of the “victims” of the show.

It showed her in a coffee shop, brunette, and basically in jeans and a t-shirt. Completely NORMAL clothes. This was only taken a few years ago, literally right before she became famous. So that one clip PROVES she’s lying because she was caught on camera wearing normal clothes and acting normal.

Unless she means shes Lady Gaga 24/7 now that she’s famous and people are watching her, in which case she’s not being a liar, just being fake. Which I guess is kind of the same thing. I understand stage personas, but she’s claiming it’s much more than that and it’s who she is. It’s obviously not who she is or else she wouldn’t have looked so normal on camera before she became famous. She’s a liar, and she’s a fake to boot. Wish she would go away.

If any of you want to see the clip of her on the show in normal clothing, just put in “lady gaga boiling points” into the youtube search. The video will come up.

Ugh, hate her. All she wants is attention.

  47. Trillion says:

Well, she can’t touch Diamanda and never will because nobody can. Thankfully, she’s not attempting that. I’ll agree w/ Liana on that one.

  48. shelby says:

    sooooooo ugly

  49. moocowhead says:

She’s a bit brave to be wearing fireworks on her boobies.

Anyhoooo, only time will tell with this one and I think she has the ambition and fanbase now to stick around for a while.

I think she should just maim herself – now that would be shocking!

  50. voodoobetty says:

@Trillion – well said. Dang, Klaus Nomi that is a name Ive not heard of in ages. I first saw him on the documentary “Urgh..A Music War”. That really open my eyes to the whole art/music merger.

  51. denise says:

That chick is straight up ugly.

  52. bellafiga says:

I get the over saturation of GAGA but this IS her job! She has to be out there and ON 24/7 and yeah we’re tired of her(not me cause i’m a loonatic) but in this day and age where the Heidi Montag’s of this planet(let us all say a prayer!) are famous for having plastic surgery and marrying a controlling moppet, her vision and singular drive in tandem with her honesty make her something we should support and love!

Dood how many famous people admit to getting into the show biz game because THEY WANT TO BE FAMOUS! She never once sites her craft or whatever actors forever espouse about! She’s being real! And for that(amongst many things) make me love and support her!

That being said, in the beginning i didn’t gel! I thought all the hooohah was taking away from her actual talent! But now I see that it is one and the same for her and i give her kudos:P

P.S. I love your site!( i was forever clicking here through lainey or dlisted, now i venture to you alone!)

  53. Kyle Minogue says:

It’s called Two Hearts from her album "X".
