Jessica Simpson’s dad ruined her chance of being a judge on American Idol

While there is no official confirmation yet on the new panel of American Idol judges, rumor has it that Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will join a three judge panel to also include longtime yes-man Randy “here’s the thing” Jackson. Both Simon Cowell and Ellen Degeneres have left, with Simon’s departure in the works for some time and Ellen issuing a statement that she was leaving because the show was not the “right fit” for her and adding that she had a hard time hurting the contestants’ feelings. Tyler has confirmed that he’s in talks with Idol, and called talks a “work in progress.” Jackson has said that the panel is still up in the air for next season, but that Ryan Seacrest will remain as host and he would welcome working with Jennifer Lopez.

We’ve heard plenty of stories about other celebrities and musicians considered for Idol. Popeater has some insider information on the judges that either passed up the chance or were unsuccessful in talks. Musicians Barry Manilow and Elton John are reported to have turned down Idol due to busy schedules and a lack of interest. Idol producers then tried to woo musicians whose careers were faltering. Lopez and Jessica Simpson were in talks, but Simpson’s dad is said to have ruined it for her by being too demanding.

“J.Lo was definitely not the first choice,” an ‘Idol’ insider tells me. “In fact, she wasn’t even the second or third choice.”

My source tells me that before they approached Lopez, producers first asked Elton John and Barry Manilow to join the hit — but starting to struggle — show. Both are undeniably great singer-songwriters who have mentored contestants in prior seasons, so it wouldn’t have been a stretch.

Alas, neither Elton nor Barry wanted to start a whole new career as a TV judge.

“It became clear that neither performer was ready to stop doing what they did best, writing and performing,” the ‘Idol’ insider says. “Plus, they are international legends. They certainly don’t want their legacy to be [as] the guy that replaced Simon Cowell on ‘Idol.'”

Once producers realized it was going to be impossible to get an artist who was still selling millions of concert tickets and CDs to join the show, they started to look at celebrities whose careers were basically stuck in neutral. They settled on artists who needed the exposure of a national TV show as much as the troubled show needed them. That’s when they turned to Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Lopez.

“Let’s face facts,” one insider tells me. “Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Lopez’s careers are in a slump. They are still big names, but haven’t sold out solo shows or had hit CDs in a long time. I think we can all agree that both ladies’ movie careers are dead and the offers are not pouring in.”

The job could have been Jessica’s, but a little thing got in the way: Joe Simpson.

“This was definitely Jessica’s to lose and that’s exactly what her dad-manager did. Once it became clear it was going to be impossible to negotiate a deal with papa Joe, J.Lo was snapped up. Convinced being on the show would relaunch her performing career, she accepted the new job right away.”

Be careful what you wish for Jennifer: Paula thought ‘Idol’ would send her back to the top of the charts too.

[From Popeater]

Poor Jessica, her dad only knows how to pimp out his daughter’s personal life and has no clue how to manage her career. Remember when she was a moderately popular pop singer who tried to branch out into films? That seems like so long ago now.

In contrast, Popeater has a related earlier story about how Lopez’s manager, Benny Medina, pitched her so well to Idol that they were convinced they needed her despite her sagging career. Idol was down 20% in the ratings this year and was sometimes bested by Dancing with The Stars. They may as well follow the same model and hire has-beens and would-bes to fill the panel. Maybe they should have a rotating panel that doesn’t rely too heavily on any single judge to carry it. Without snarky Simon it won’t be the same, and it’s not like Randy did much more than agree with whatever Simon said. Randy should have been the first one to go.

Jessica is so dumb to let her dad be her manager. He sucks soooo much.

JLO will be great on idol because she is bitchy and full of drama. It will be entertaining.

    Randy is useless

  2. bite me says:

poor poor simpleton, oh well at least La Lopez will something to do now

  3. zendiggity says:

I dont get why she would have been considered in the first place. She has no real talent and has the intelligence of a clump of dirt.
what type of advice or criticism would she have to offer other than to tell them to try and be everything she isnt?
If it wasnt for her bogus romances in the news she would have been long forgotten.
Her 15 minutes ended years ago, its a shame she’s too dumb to even realize that.

  4. Hautie says:

I would have like to see Jessica come on the show and tell people that they were terrible! Just really cut loose and be evil. Oh that would have been worth watching the show.

Can you image how great that would be for her to step out and not play the airhead. It would be thrilling to see her being evil.

  5. Maritza says:

Jennifer Lopez should stick to acting she is good at it. I do think people will be watching American Idol just to see her because she does have a big latino fan base. They should have taken Randy out too just to start fresh. Jessica Simpson would have been fun to watch just to hear her stupid comments.

  6. Riley says:

Her dad is such a mess. I always thought that he was in love with Nick Lachey and that is why he broke Nick and Jess up. I think he probably has the hots for Ryan and tried to flex his muscles to get the golden boy to pay attention to him and it backfired. Wonder what Ken Paves makes of all this…

  7. Meanchick says:

I just feel sorry for Jessica Simpson now. She needs to get rid of her dad as her manager, but not as her dad, there’s a difference. Jennifer Lopez? What can I say? She’s paid her dues and I adore her! Her career isn’t sagging, she turned her attention to her family. I might even start watch AI again if Jenny is a new judge.

  8. lucy2 says:

Is it wrong that I get a small amount of glee in hearing that JLo wasn’t even 2nd or 3rd choice? For someone who thinks so highly of herself, that must ding the ego a bit.
If Jessica had hired a proper manager, not her father, I think her career (and probably her whole life) would be very different. I imagine it’s tough to fire a parent, but he’s done far more harm than good for her.

  9. flutters says:

This week’s OK or one of the other tabloids is reporting this week that JLo was originally in negotiations to be on Simon Cowell’s X Factor but ended up turning it down because of not enough money in the offer. Now she’s in line to be an AI judge for more money presumably. Which show would be better for her I don’t know.

I don’t even think Elton John/Barry Manilow were up for the same spot as JLo. JLo’s clearly the Ellen/Paula replacement. Elton John/Barry Manilow would be the Simon Cowell replacement.

But why were they trying to get Barry Manilow? No offense to the man who’s an accomplished performer and writer but I don’t think he’s what AI needs.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Joe Simpson kidded himself about being in the driver’s seat and coming to the table with such a huge set of demands that Jessica was immediately out of the running. I doubt she was ever the frontrunner though.

  10. D says:

Sue me, but I like Jessica and always have. I get tired of people ripping her apart for sport when she’s done nothing terribly wrong. She probably could have gotten me to watch to be honest.

  11. D says:

And isn’t the guy who wrote the popeater thing her former agent/rep who she and her dad fired? Yeah, that’s real credible.

Not that I care for Joe S. but still….

  12. NayNay says:

Either way, they both will suck as AI judges. I am a faithful watcher, no more!

  13. Celebitchy says:

@D – damn it’s probably the same guy! I never realized that and I even covered that story a few years ago:
    http://www.celebitchy.com/1647/heads_roll_after_jessicas_fake_john_mayer_tabloid_romance/

  14. California Surfer says:

The only way to save this show would be to get both Jessica Simpson AND Nick Lachey on as judges! Grandma totally loves Nick and wishes she was 40 years younger or Vanessa Minillo.

  15. Anna says:

I would think her stupidity and lack of talent would have cost her the job.

  16. heb says:

he’s ruined her entire life it seems

  17. LindyLou says:

I think Harry Connick Jr would have been a great replacement for Simon. The man has a great sense of humour and he would definitely tell it like it is. I wonder if the producers even considered him??

  18. Jover says:

on the contrary anisa, jessica simpson’s stupidity and lack of talent are perfect for what AI has become. It’s delicious that JHO was considered behind – behind – JS; how bad do you have to be to be the next choice after JS. JHo owes her entire “career” to a real singer, Selena, but after her death, the music industry, lazy as always, went with JHO instead of finding a real latina singer to carry on after Selena; Jho has established a new law of physics – as one’s career shrivels, one’s ego swells proportionately. This karoake show needs to be killed, not put on life support.

  19. just saying says:

You all really think Jessica is dumb well you all need your own heads checked. Last I saw its all speculation about who really will be judges. There ramping up & everyone wants the scoop or think they have it.. Everyone will look like real asses should they pull totally different names from any of these people who only claim to have been approached & nothing more.. I say its all spin.
I think it would be hilarious to have Jess on this show that is actually tanking anyways.
JLO is known as the DIVA not Jessica. If you want drama & controversey Jessica absolutley brings that to teh table.. After a couple shows with JLO people will become bored but guarenteed people will be tuning in to see what comes out of Jess’s mouth next..

  20. Honeybun says:

I’m confused….how could Jessica Simpson ever be in the same league as Jennifer Lopez?

  21. aw! says:

Simpson doesn’t need a manager–her Dad, or otherwise. She isn’t doing anything that takes “talent”, because she has none.

  22. kim says:

Joe Simpson is an idiot if this story is true. He got greedy and got nothing. Poor Jessica =(

  23. Sumodo1 says:

JLo can sing, dance, and even tell jokes–did you see her on George Lopez? With Latin music under-repesented on AI, it is fuckin’ time.

  24. MSMLNP says:

I’m with Honeybun. In what world would Jessica Simpson be a 1st choice, with J-Lo further down the list? Doesn’t make sense.

  25. LolaBella says:

    Thank you Pimpa Joe!

  26. BethL says:

I don’t get calling Randy a yesman. He’s usually the first one to comment so he doesn’t have a chance to agree with Simon. Unlike Paula and Ellen he will say somebody sucks, although in a nice way. I don’t understand why AI would want Jessica. I guess they were thinking she would have a Paula effect. What happened to Brett Michaels? He was practically bragging he had the job.

  27. Tiffany says:

    Celebitchy and D,

I think that it is the same guy and I am going to go with the Rob on this because:

A.) He was doing what he was told to do by Papa Joe in leaking that John Mayer make out session.
B.) They decided to fire him because that would be more money for them since they got a grasp on how to work the media from him.

There was some truth to it because she could not stop being seen with Mayer, so this is a lesson learned. If you want it to be known, it will be.

  28. Gibi smith says:

I hope she gets a new manger and keep the fataer as a father. It will do her good in her career and love life.
