Neil Patrick Harris & boyfriend announce they are expecting twins via surrogacy

wenn2656078

Last summer, Star Magazine reported that Neil Patrick Harris and his boyfriend were “in the process” of selecting a surrogate to have their babies. I kind of thought the report was bullsh-tty, but Star may have been right on. Yesterday, Neil Patrick Harris confirmed the happy news on his Twitter – that he and boyfriend David Burtka were expecting twins via a surrogate.

nph

NPH only confirmed that the babies are due “this fall” and that he and David are “super excited/nervous/thrilled.” Then he asks for privacy. Unfortunately for his privacy, his announcement came only a few hours after E! News spilled the beans in a major way:

Neil Patrick Harris is going to have his hands full come fall. E! News has exclusively learned that the ubiquitous actor and his longtime partner, David Burtka, are going to become the parents of twins, via a beautiful surrogate, this October.

At least the dads are allowed to celebrate with a champagne toast!

A source tells E! that the happy couple have put baby shower plans in motion, as if Harris’ chance of winning three Emmys this month wasn’t already enough to celebrate!

Burtka, a chef and actor who has guest-starred on How I Met Your Mother, was just seen with his multitalented beau last weekend after Harris directed a production of Rent at the Hollywood Bowl.

And this is not the first time there’s been speculation about Harris’ pending fatherhood.

Star reported last year that Burtka and Harris had visited a surrogacy agency in L.A. to get the ball rolling on expanding their family. They’ve been together for roughly six years.

Reps for Harris have yet to return our calls for comment.

[From E! News]

Six years is a lifetime in Hollywood, and NPH and David seem really solid. My only concern – and this is minor – is that in interviews, NPH always seemed a little commitment-phobic about actually getting a ring on his finger, saying in several interviews that he didn’t know if he would ever get married. Of course, that might be about politics and Prop 8 and all of that. Maybe he and David already feel like they’re married (six years, after all), and they just wanted to be dads. Congratulations to them, and good luck and best wishes to the surrogate!

You should note that the ony time NPH said that he wasn’t sure, if he wanted to get married soon, was in summer 2008, which was shortly after David Burtka’s mother had unexpectedly died from cancer.

There have been several interviews wherein he said that he’d like to get married at some point, and that they had even talked about doing it before it was legal at all. (Howards Stern interview 2008).

I’m sure they’ll get married now as soon as the twins are a bit older. Oh, and they ARE wearing rings, for that matter.

  2. Tazina says:

Lucky twins! Two great dads coming up,

  3. gee says:

Maybe he doesn’t want to get married in the conventional sense.. but they’re both wearing rings in that last pictures.

Either way, good for them! Very exciting news and they’ll make great papas.

  4. jammama says:

This is an example couple that deserve the right to get married! You see…there are gays that want a family and want to spend the rest of their lives together. I’m sure they would make great loving parents!!!

You never know…depending on what happens with Prop 8…maybe they’ll get married after having their kids.

  5. Layla says:

the world is getting so weird….

  6. jess says:

i love nph but anybody else find humor in publicly announcing you hope people respect your privacy? congrats to the couple.

  7. lucy2 says:

Congrats to them! I love NPH, he’s talented and funny, and I’m glad to see his career going so well – proof that not all child stars turn into raving lunatics.
I thought the same thing though Jess, it’s hard to ask for privacy when you’re publicly announcing it! I guess they only announced since E already broke the news.
I would hope they’re able to get legally married soon, because that secures both of them in terms of custody, support, etc, should they ever split or should something happen to one of them.

  8. Tia C says:

Yay for them! Love me some NPH. What a truly handsome couple they are, too, btw.

Yes, jess, the irony in that statement made me laugh, too. Making an announcement to the world and then longing for privacy is pretty funny. But NPH seems to be very good at maintaining his privacy, so that probably won’t be a huge issue.

  9. SamSam says:

I read this and got so excited and happy for them! They are going to be wonderful.

  10. Lynne says:

    Love NPH!

  11. Kiska says:

How exciting! Congrats to both of them.

  12. CathyT says:

How do people feel if the surrogate mother changes her mind and wants custody?

  13. Marnie says:

    OMG!!! Congratulations 😀

  14. Courtney says:

    that’s unlikely to happen

  15. ch says:

yeah the whole twiter announcement thing doesn´t show much privacy concern to me
people are weird, gay or not

  16. EMV says:

The not getting married thing does not surprise me. Most of my gay male friends who have been in committed relationships have NO desire to get married. My parent’s good friends have been together for 30 years and don’t think that marriage is was determines their committment to one another. I think that getting married in the gay community is not the same in the straight community. There isn’t such a stigma for couples “living in sin” so to speak. To each their own. Might I also add that I love NPH! He is such a great actor! Congratulations to them!

  17. EMV says:

a surrogate mother usually, but not in all cases had nothing to do with the child’s genetics. Surrogates get paid a great deal of mony to go through this when picked by a celebrity. They are usually the vessel in which the baby or babies are born. So it all depends on whether she is their biological mother. Also I’m SURE they had a contract with her saying that she would not want custodial privilages. If they didn’t they need to get a better attorney.

  18. eja102 says:

as for the privacy, I read it to mean “now that the news is out, respect our privacy”

as to the comment about the “gay community” and “living in sin”, like any couple, the choice of marriage is personal, and not to be classified based on assumed roles.

  19. GatsbyGal says:

YAAAY! Awesome news for them. They always look like a fun, happy couple. I must admit I’m a little jealous of those twins…I’d love to have these two guys as my daddies. How cool would that be??

  20. canadianchick says:

Congrats to them! Aww, nice to hear good news.

  21. Jen says:

David is totally Val Kilmer’s doppelganger, no?

  22. Tia says:

Layla, get a life. So happy for the new parents… that is awesome.

  23. Emily says:

I think he just announced it on Twitter to stop everyone asking him about it, and then asked for privacy because he doesn’t want to go into details. Makes sense to me-otherwise, any woman they’re seen out with will be put on bump watch.

  24. California Surfer says:

Grandma and I find ourselves wondering if the twins are dudes or dudettes or one of each?

  25. Whatever says:

I don’t find the statement odd at all. The story was all over, so addressing it makes sense. Every celeb outlet was likely calling his reps constantly, so he probably was just shutting them up. I hope they lay off and don’t hound the poor girl like Sarah Jessica Parker’s surrogate.

    Anyway, congrats to the couple!

  26. Katija says:

Most surrogates don’t have that “Oh crap, I want to keep my baby!” moment because the baby isn’t a blood relative.

I am considering being a surrogate for my cousin and his partner. I’m WAY more scared about being pregnant before I’m even married than I am about worrying that I’ll want to keep the baby.

@Layla – If you think it’s weird, don’t be a surrogate for a gay couple! No need to pass judgment on the rest of us…

  27. Maritza says:

    They are both so cute!

  28. Lee says:

These men have made a deliberate choice to bring children into this world who will never be mothered by their mother. That of course happens all the time by accident, circumstance, and mothers immediately giving up their children for adoption, but this is entirely by design, and is therefore criminally selfish, irresponsible, and negligent. If Trump did this same thing in order to protect his fortunes from the legal vulnerabilty that comes with marriage, he would be called a narcissist, an egomaniac, and a monster(again). If Clooney did this for similar, reasons, as well as to protect his playboy lifestyle, the tabs would dub him “Cloney!!!” and he would be derided as a chauvinist, a misogynist and a cad(again).

  29. Lourdes says:

Lee since you can see the future, can you please give me the Powerball numbers this week? Thanks!

PS-how do you know this child will never see its mother? It could be a sister or cousin of one of the dads. Give them a break and let them be happy.

  30. Kloops says:

My first thought is that there is no way NPH is old enough to be a parent. Damn, I’m getting old. Congrats to the dads-to-be!

  31. CB Rawks says:

Lee, your problem is that you can’t see that love is all that matters. What the parent has between their legs is completely irrelevant. You don’t have to be the biological mother to be the best parent. Adoptive parents are often better because they WANT to be there, and fathers can be warmer and more loving than some mothers. (My experience)
So this crap about “it needs its mother” is just that, crap.
And homophobic and intolerant too, as I can detect that your agenda is more about keeping a pre-war, bible-thumping, nuclear-family, time-warp thing happening in the current world.

  32. becca says:

    Lee,

That’s so sad you feel that way – it really is. You have NO idea about the relationship the surrogate has with NPH and his boyfriend. NONE. So you know what? The surrogate could actually be good friends with them, and they’d be arranging for the surrogate to be in the twins’ life in some shape or form. You’ve got no idea what the relationship is like. NONE.

So who are you to judge?

And yes – your comments scream homophobia. Being a parent is about wanting the responsibility of raising a child to become an adult, to help guide them into the world. The surrogate obviously wants to give NPH and his boyfriend a chance because they WANT to become parents and the surrogate feels that they WILL be good parents. Therefore, a parent is a ROLE which is filled by those who WANT it – and in this case, it’s two men.

Roles do not, and should not, be prejudiced to gender. They should be given to those who want them, and are capable of them.

Congrats to NPH and his boyfriend – I’m sure they’ve thought about it well and through, and will rise to the occasion admirably when the twins are born.

  33. Madison says:

Doogie Howser is having twins. Yikes!! They are in for a shock although like all celebrities they will have live in nannies and a housekeeper, it’ll be a piece of cake. Have fun boys and congratulations.

  34. Shawna says:

I am way behind on any NPH gossip, and when I saw the picture of the couple with “TWINS!” on it, I assumed they’d unearthed NPH’s long-lost brother, and I was like, “They don’t look all that alike.” Talk about behind the gossip curve!

    Yay for them.

  35. Tess says:

    Lay off Layla!!!

  36. Juice in LA says:

J’adore Dior J’adore!!!!! Congrats, swoon and Hearts!!! how wonderful.

  37. Katija says:

    @ Lee

I admire your strong political and religious convictions. I especially admire the fact that you’re saving the rest of us by sharing these important views on a FUCKING CELEBRITY GOSSIP BLOG.

  38. Jeri says:

Congratulations! I think they’ll be a great family.

  39. Ruffian9 says:

    Great news – Congrats gentlemen!!!

  40. Ruffian9 says:

Lee – These children will have two loving parents…what the hell is your problem?

    Issues…serious issues…

  41. chasingadalia says:

I would definitely like to put my name in that surrogate pool! Haha.

  42. Brittney says:

If only the twins could have DNA from both of them. They are probably one of the top three best-looking couples in Hollywood. The two of them raising two adorable babies: a reality show I would watch every day.
