Kanye West back to being an arrogant diva

After his mother died, Kanye West seemed to have changed. There seemed to be an air of humility around him, and a newfound respect for people. Somehow the mountain of arrogance seemed to have abated a bit, which could only be a good thing. But it appears that whatever bit of dignity and self-restraint visited Kanye was only stopping by for the weekend, as he’s very much back to his conceited, egotistical rantings.

Entertainment Weekly reviewed Kanye’s Glow in the Dark tour on Friday, giving it a B+. And Entertainment Weekly can be pretty stingy with its reviews – a B+ is something to be pretty happy about. And if nothing else, it’s best to have some grace and manners about the whole thing, no? But those are two words that have never crossed Kanye West’s lips. Here’s a few highlights from the review:

For his headlining chunk of the Glow in the Dark Tour, Kanye West also takes fans on a galactic voyage, folding his hits into a wacked-out space opera that’s the ultimate ego trip. Normally, that’d be an insult, but with West, who’s made an art form out of dramatizing both humility and hubris, it’s mission accomplished…

…Okay, so he’s a nut. Still, West’s commitment to communicating inner passions and identity crises is so consuming it nearly redeems any conceptual hokeyness. Eschewing hip-hop’s buddy system, West is his stage’s sole visible human, and he’s become a riveting soliloquist. Crouching on one knee, broken up, during ”Hey Mama” — or pacing like a prizefighter during every other number — he gets you caught up in his journey to the center of the id and pulls off something rare: an intimate spectacle.

Now keep in mind that by most accounts, Kanye’s show is a massive ego trip and has a good deal of cheese to it. A spaceship named Jane talks to him and ”We need the brightest star in the universe — you, Kanye! Only you can bring us home. You can glow in the dark!” Supposedly the show is so good that you can overlook the occasional cheese though. It seems like the writer gave Kanye a pretty good review, considering most of us can’t look past the ego that he forces in our faces. Yet here was how Kanye chose to respond on his blog at KanyeUniverCity.

Yo, anybody that’s not a fan; don’t come to my show. For what?! To try and throw ya’ll two cents in? Ya’ll rated my album shitty and now ya’ll come to the show and give it a B+. What’s a B+ mean? I’m an extremist. It’s either pass or fail! A+ or F-! You know what, fuck you and the whole fucking staff!!! I know I shouldn’t dignify this with a comment, but the reviewer threw a jab at all the artists. I just wanna know when was the last time you enjoyed yourself. If you can’t have fun and lose yourself at this tour it’s a good chance you’re a very miserable person. I actually feel sorry for you guys. Your job forces you to not have fun anymore. Grab a drink, holla at some nice girls, and party bitch!! You don’t know shit about passion and art. You’ll never gain credibility at this rate. You’re fucking trash! I make art. You can’t rate this. I’m a real person. I’m not a pop star. I don’t care about anything but making great art. Never come 2 one of my shows ever again, you’re not invited and if you see me…BOW!! This is not pop, it’s pop art!

What a fabulous way to seem like an ungrateful asshole. And to prove the reviewer right. In fact it seems like Entertainment Weekly soft-peddled Kanye’s ego a bit. So he made sure to remind us all exactly how great he is. It doesn’t seem to occur to him that just because he’s a self-proclaimed extremist, and it’s all-or-nothing with him, doesn’t mean the rest of the world has to adjust their views to be in line with that.

As shocking and upsetting as it is, someone’s allowed to think Kanye is mediocre. The funny thing is that EW didn’t even say that – what they wrote was pretty generous. But I’ll go out on a limb here and say there’s no performance in the universe that could be good enough to merit this level of ego. So I’ll reserve my bows for now.

  1. EW. The review sounded pretty nice …

  2. WHAT? Art/Artist my ass. I listen to all of his albums and although I found the beats and rhythms of some of the songs quite catchy and enjoyable, his lyrics on the other hand are plain, meaningless and stupid (similar to any other rapper/ artist), there is no substance in his music and I do not know who actually fake praised him that there is.

As I always said before, he is one in a big line of mediocre (and I am being nice) ‘artist’ that think that if they keep telling people how good they are long enough then someone my actually be persuaded.

Ah, despite all the showy humility (and yes this is an oxymoron)…Kanye still has a massive ego…you didn’t expect him to change completely from his mother’s recent death…money is still money…

  4. Back? When did he quit ? Even during his humanitarian efforts he was a self-centered, self-important douchewad.

  6. You’d think he’d be more articulate considering his mother was an English professor.

  7. Doesn’t anyone find it curious that the least talented and capable individuals are always the ones who seem to develop the most pathologically over-magnified egos?

Mr West should fall on his knees and pray in gratitude for the fact that ANYONE cares even remotely about him, given that he has no talent whatsoever. Stealing (oh, sorry, it’s called ’sampling’) other people’s work and creating a looping beat while you talk incoherently in psalmody isn’t talent - it’s called being a cultural embarrassment.

Let’s see how long it takes for this cretin to disappear into obscurity. As all manufactured products, rappers also seem to have an expiration date… thankfully enough.

  8. Might I add two things:
    1) The EW writer is the husband of a faithful Celebitchy reader; and
    2) Kanye took off the last line of his rant that he had initially posted, which read, “Kill yourself Chris Willman!”

You can see the blog with that line on it on TMZ (although I hate to send people from such a quality blog as Celebitchy over to TMZ).

  9. It’s sad people cannot see the greatest of this artist.
He doesn’t have to kowtow to black or white people, and for that he frightens people.
Truly he’s as great as Jim Morrison of the Doors, the deaf, and 8) dumb people can’t see it.
    Greatness is miss understood.

  11. Enonymouse, i agree what everyone is saying, but i must say you’re wrong about Kanye’s music he does have good music with meaning and there is some hip hop that is real and has meaning its just not what you hear everyday.

  12. His arrogance really doesn’t offend me, I see him more as a character and a really good entertainer.

I have to disagree about his lyrics being meaningless, from the stat he’s made it a point to talk about heavy issues, how many rappers take on the Diamond trade?

I’ve read reviews and heard word of mouth about the glow in the dark concert and I’m going when he comes to NYC.

Not everyone can be humble, it’d be boring and I like the fact that he understands what a true entertainer is supposed to do. :D

  13. jesus brent its because of sheeps like you is the reason why he has an ego like he does. In the end he does aim his music at white and black people since he goes on mtv and bet to promote albums. The only reason Jim Morrison is considered great is that he died before his career took the enevitable dive that all artist go through. If i recall which im not 100% on this but didn’t he liken himself to jesus at one point? Im not a over religous person but he may have a bigger problem on his hands than a ok tour review.

  14. Talent is no excuse for acting like a whiny little girl with a skinned knee because someone doesn’t like your performance.

Brent said: He doesn’t have to kowtow to black or white people, and for that he frightens people.

Wow, what a worn-out, stretched-thin attitude to affect. I can name about six other alleged artists who claim the same bullsh*t ideology and not one of them is worth a flying f*ck. How about someone who actually appreciates his audience and is gracious to them for his fame and his wealth FOR ONCE?

No- then he wouldn’t be some spoiled upper-middle-class suburban white boy’s hero anymore.

  16. pop art? andy warhol was pop art. period. not to mention the fact tht pop art is a bit dated venue now. Much more 60’s 70’s. pop culture possibly but then kanye isn’t the jay-z he thinks he is.

if you don’t like reviews, don’t read them. You will not be everything to everyone….get over yourself

Kanye has the same argument that people have on any blog site when you don’t agree with them. It’s the “your just jealous because you’re old and fat,” etc. But “your” is spelled “ur.”

I don’t mind Kanye’s music but him as a person, good God he needs a good punching. Just a good beat down in front of an audience so he’ll humble out a bit.

And just because you like an artist, doesn’t mean you have to love their concert. I love U2 and have seen them in concert a number of times but I wasn’t impressed with their Vertigo tour. Mainly the venue sucked, I think the band felt that too and they decided to suck up Elevation and not play Bad. WTF???

And I agree with D. Jim Morrison was just ridiculously pretentious.
