Alec Baldwin jokes there’s a vast right wing conspiracy against him

Remember that voicemail message that Alec Baldwin left for his-then 12 year-old daughter, Ireland, in which he sounded like a mafia kingpin telling her she had insulted him for the last time and calling her a thoughtless little pig? (Here’s a Dora the Explorer mashup with the voicemail created by Funny Or Die in case you missed it.)

Baldwin was on 60 Minutes last night and Morley Safer specifically asked him about the voicemail message, which was leaked a little over a year ago. You could see Baldwin’s temper starting to mildly flare in his response to Morley, in which he took the question as a personal affront and told him he had a judgmental tone.

On his nasty voicemail message to his daughter

Alec: You get so frustrated and you realize number one, and it’s wrong, it’s totally wrong, that I was really speaking to somebody else when I left that message. I mean, I was past, I was putting up with this for six years.

Morley: But you weren’t talking to another person. You were talking to your daughter, a kid. You said “you thoughtless little pig” I mean I find it hard to utter the words.

Alec: Did you ever lose your temper with your kids?

Morley: Yeah, but nothing like that.

Alec: If you’re asking me, do I feel bad about leaving that message. I think that goes without saying. At the same time [acting pissed] I’m pretty overwhelmed by the sanctimoniousness of people who say that I mean I got so many phonecalls from people who seem as learned and sober and together as you are, who all said to me “Man, I’m glad they didn’t tape some of the things I said to my kids.”

Morley: As appalling as what you said may be even more appalling may be that it was released by someone.

Alec: That tells you what I’m dealing with. Listen, you use words like appalled and you have, if I may say so, a pretty judgmental tone of me. I think that as truly sorry as I am that that happened, to me it only illustrates how difficult this process has become for many many people.

We reported on Saturday that Alec said he would consider running for office and said that “it’s something I might do one day.”

Baldwin laughed while he repeated the words of Hillary Clinton in 1998 in which she said there was a “Vast right-wing conspiracy” against her husband, President Bill Clinton. (This was when she tried to diffuse public perception of Lewinsky scandal before it was known that Bill was guilty as charged.)

He said that the conservatives are “after him” and that they “hate liberals.” As for his much-repeated statement that he would move out of the US if Bush was elected, he claims he didn’t say that. What he said was that it “might be a good time to leave” if Bush won, which he maintains is quite different:

On the vast right wing conspiracy against him

“They hate liberals who can throw a punch,” Baldwin tells Safer.

Asked who “they” are, Baldwin says, “They, yeah, this…they. The vast right wing conspiracy that’s after me…”

The right went wild when it was reported he said he’d move out of the country if George Bush were elected.

“I never said that,” Baldwin says. “I said, ‘It might be a good time to leave the country.’ There’s a big difference between that and promising to leave the country. And even if I did, who cares? What difference would that make in anyone lives, you know?”

“Your eloquence, if that’s the word, can get you into deep trouble,” Safer remarks.

“So I don’t make the eloquent point so eloquently, is that what you’re saying?” Baldwin asks.

“Or you make them perhaps excessively eloquent, as in your description of Dick Cheney, who you said was a sociopath and a terrorist. And you later apologized by just calling him a lying, thieving oil whore and a murderer of the U.S. Constitution,” Safer replies.

“You know, all the cameramen are cracking up. So, there is an audience out there. It may only be five or six men,” Baldwin says.

A lot of people agree with Baldwin, and a lot of people think he should keep his mouth shut. Either way, he’s definitely a character. Baldwin is writing a book about divorce and parental alienation to help other men who are being shut out of their children’s lives by their ex wives. A possible career in politics may also be in his future. He’s sure to bring more of that spitfire personality to whatever he does, and it serves him well in his acting career but may be more of a liability in a public service role.

The only thing against Alec is reality. His big bloated balloon of an Ego keeps bumping against it’s sharp pointy corners.

  2. Kimmy says:

Hillary Clinton said there was a ‘vast right-wing conspiracy’ against her husband in nineteen NINETY eight, not 1988. In 1988, I believe Bill was still Governor of Arkansas. In 1998, the Monica Lewinsky scandal came out, while Bill was still President and Hillary was referring to how many in the Republican Party wanted Bill to be impeached.

I’m Canadian, and in 1998, I was 14 years old. Still, even I know THAT!

  3. Celebitchy says:

    It’s a typo Kimmy, I’ll fix it.

  4. Kimmy says:

Thanks, CB! (Sorry, I was the know-it-all in class who’d always correct the teacher and other students and lose my likability in increments…)

  5. Celebitchy says:

I’m older than you Kimmy and I remember it well since I was already out of college at that point. 😉

  6. Kimmy says:

    I bow to my elders…

I like Alec. I think it is easy to pass judgement on someone when we have not walked in their shoes.

I think what he called his daughter was horrible, I think the fact it was released to the public, worse.

Who would make their child the front and center of such a caustic situation? Someone who isn’t that concerned for the child’s wellbeing.

I feel bad for Ireland. Clearly both parents have major issues and their fight with each other is more important that their reltionship with her.

What a silly man. I find it fascinating that he’s blaming other people for what is basically his own bad behavior. He was unlucky enough to get caught, or unlucky enough to be hung out to dry by his unpleasant ex-wife, but the doesn’t change the fact he’s basically a bully. I wouldn’t vote for lefty-him any more than I would vote for righty-Newt Gingrich, who tried to impeach Bill Clinton while cheating on his own wife.

I have a serious love-hate relationship with Alec, but maybe that’s the only kind anyone can ever have. In his prime (think “Beetlejuice”), that man was way, way, way better looking than Brad Pitt, and he’s highly intelligent and witty. Where the hate comes in is fairly obvious. As the mother of a school-aged kid, anyone who called my daughter a pig would definitely be on the receiving end of a homunculus lawyer. But… 1) chicken, 2) egg… or 1) egg, 2) chicken… who knows? Kim B. seems to have some fairly well-developed emotional issues herself, so I’m sure he was acting out of frustration. Maybe a few more anger-management classes would help them both (and their innocent kid).

I think Alec Baldwin is a great performer, but when people talk privately about what it’s like to work with him…well, the stories aren’t good. I’ve always gotten a strong “control freak” vibe off of him.

I’m not saying that his relationship with his daughter is perfect by any means, or that he isn’t provoked. But I think he does his share of provoking as well. He likes to portray himself as the victim in this story. But he’s one of the adults, and he’s responsible for his actions–which includes what he says in phone messages. The victim here is the child caught between warring parents who ought to know better.

  11. Gossip says:

sounds like alec is just as delusional and narcissistic as his brother, who appeared on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab. It must run in the family.

  12. Syko says:

I do believe he was joking.

  13. Ceenitall says:

I like Alec the actor, I love, love, love him in 30 Rock. I don’t like Alec the guy. He needs to just shut up and act, no running for office or writing books to tell us how bad he has had it since the divorce (he married her and had a kid with her, he should have known better).
Really just shut up and make me laugh damm it!

  14. headache says:

He makes me grateful people aren’t recording everything parents say to their kids.

  15. xxx says:

At least he’s honest, whether you like him or not. And he’s quite handsome.

  16. kate says:

someone needs to get over himself.

  17. gg says:

Like Eddie Murphy, the actor is brilliant. The guy? Not so much.

  18. I choose me says:

^^ Was brilliant gg. Hmm. Let me rethink that. He was pretty damn good in Dreamgirls. As someone who got called worse things by my mom growing up when she was pissed and or frustrated, (lazy slob etc., Not to mention the casual threats to poke my eye out with a fork or burn me with the iron)I still don’t think what Alec said to his kid was so bad. However despite him being a brilliant actor I do agree that he has ‘issues’ but then who doesn’t? Me I’ve got subscriptions.

*Note: My mom loves me to death. I think I might actually be her favourite* 😆

  19. ak says:

I wish he would just shut up and be Jack Donaghy.

  20. headache says:

Haven’t watched 30 rock but I loved him in The Departed although I loved everyone in that movie, particularly the little irish dude who used to be on the district.

He’s a real actor with real talent. I would say 80% of the under 30 crowd making movies right now aren’t fit to tie his shoelaces, thoughtless little pig comments and all.

  21. paris herpes says:

I’m glad that he is at least entitled to his own opinion, and most of what he’s saying about Cheney is absolutely, without a doubt true. But Cheney is also a penguin, WAH WAH WAH!

  22. paris herpes says:

OH and he rocks 30 Rock like no other! Who knew this bloated pig of a self-satisfied asshole could be SO FUNNY!

  23. paris herpes says:

I remember I was waiting in line to get on a plane and this mother told her errant child who kept on moving to the front of line to “quit acting like a 5 year old” and the father told the child that he would “throw away her stuffed animal in the garbage, if she didn’t get back in line like everyone else”…damn, parents can be so MEAN to their own children, how traumatizing!

  24. KateNonymous says:

“I think what he called his daughter was horrible, I think the fact it was released to the public, worse.”

See, I don’t get that at all. I’m not saying that releasing it was good–it’s definitely not. But why is it worse to let people know about his actions than it is for him to act that way?

He’d be better off if he just said, “I shouldn’t have said that,” than continuing to claim that it’s essentially someone else’s fault he said it. No, it isn’t.

The conspiracy thing does sound like a joke.

  25. Jude says:

Put this man in rehab. He is fat and bloated from all his boozing. We need another drunk in politics. He damnnear drove Kim into the nut house with his behavior while and after they were married. He calls his little girl names and screams at her. Yeah..I would vote for him NOT.
