Vintage Scandal Monday: Did Lana Turner kill her mobster boyfriend?

lana

Lana Turner was once one of the most famous stars in Hollywood. She was known for her platinum blonde hair and her bitchy, catty allure. My favorite films of Lana’s were the “women’s films” she did with Douglas Sirk, Imitation of Life and Madame X being the most classic. But she was also in some big, big films, like Peyton Place and The Three Musketeers. She was the kind of woman who always attracted the worst kind of men. What’s worse is that Lana often married them – she was married eight times to seven different men. In addition to her husbands, she also gathered an impressive list of lovers including Tyrone Power (who I LOVE) and Howard Hughes. Perhaps attracting bad boys was all she knew – after all, her father was a gambling ne’er-do-well who was murdered when Lana was just a child.

In any case, when Lana met an LA mobster named Johnny Stompanato, it was love at first… something. Johnny was one of famed mobster Mickey Cohen’s right-hand-men. Johnny and Lana met in 1957, but the following year their relationship began going off the rails.

At 9.20 p.m. on April 4, 1958 Cheryl Crane, Lana Turner’s fourteen-year-old daughter, stabbed her mother’s lover in the stomach. Johnny Stompanato was a suave, well-known gangster who had escorted other stars around town and had once been Mickey Cohen’s bodyguard.

Two weeks earlier, Stompanato and Lana had had a violent fight because she refused to take him with her to the Oscars (she had been nominated for the first time, for her role in Peyton Place). The Oscar on the night of March 26, 1958 went to Joanne Woodward for “The Three Faces of Eve.” Stompanato watched the ceremony from Turner’s home, festering anger. When Turner arrived home, Stompanato let loose his rage and began slapping Turner.

On numerous occasions he had threatened to disfigure her or harm her family if she left him—he had visited her in London on the set of her most recent movie and reportedly had such a clash with her young co-star, Sean Connery, that Scotland Yard had him deported.

April 4, 1958, Good Friday wasn’t so good at the Turner mansion. Turner had decided to end the relationship with Stompanato. But Stompanato was determined not to leave.

As the fight escalated in Turner’s bedroom, fourteen year old Cheryl Crane heard everything from her bedroom next door. Crane heard Stompanato’s threats to cut Turner’s face and kill Turner’s mother and daughter. Outside Turner’s door, Crane begged to be let in but Turner refused.

Crane took a carving knife from a kitchen drawer and went upstairs to her mother’s closed door. As the fight tapered off, Crane once again requested her mother to open the door. Turner finally relented. Crane thought she saw Stompanato coming at her with what she thought was some sort of weapon and she thrust out her arm. In her hand was the carving knife with which she stabbed Stompanato.

Turner gave Stompanato mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until the doctor arrived. Stompanato was given a shot of adrenalin to the heart. But Stompanato was dead.

[From Lycos/Granta and Suite 101]

Or did Lana really kill Johnny, and she simply let her daughter take the fall? The conspiracy about what really happened that night has never really died, and I found sites devoted to the theory that Lana did it – like this one. Still, there was a trial and Cheryl was found not guilty, given that she was simply trying to protect her mother (justifiable homicide). Cheryl was sent to a school for wayward teenage girls (thanks Mom!).

After that, Cheryl went to live with her grandmother, and she and Lana were estranged. Lana reportedly claimed to friends in later years that she had been the one to stab Stompanato. You can read more about Lana and the case at TCM’s extensive archives.

I think Cheryl wrote a book about it as well & stuck to her story.

    I love Vintage Scandal Monday’s!!

  2. Cheyenne says:

Mom sure knew how to pick ’em. Poor Cheryl went through hell in that home. Not only did she have to take the fall for Stompanato’s murder, but she claimed she was repeatedly raped her stepfather Lex Barker, Turner’s fourth husband. When she told mom what happened, Turner and Barker were divorced.

  3. Raven says:

I thought they were estranged because Turner was still in love with Stampanado.

There was a great little scene in LA Confidential in which the inexperienced police detective assumes the young woman with Stampanado is a hooker “cut” to look like a movie star (part of the plot). After throwing a drink in her face, he finds out she’s the “real” Lana Turner.

  4. db8ng1 says:

Now, let’s get to the really important question: Who would play Lana in the story of her life?

    Not Heigl, please God, no.
    Not Lindsanity, enough said.
In fact, none of these stupid youngins!

Maybe Diane Lane or Ashley Judd?

  5. SammyHammy says:

Imitation of Life…definitely one of my favorite movies ever!

Hard to say which one actually did it, but honestly I don’t think it was a great loss to the world either way.

As for who could play her in a biopic? Hmmm…maybe Charlize Theron?

  6. neelyo says:

that Xmas tree photo is horrible. she looks like Barbara Hutton.

My fave film of hers is POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE (B & W still in turban). See that if you want to understand the Lana Turner appeal. IMITATION OF LIFE IS a great film but because of Sirk, not Lana.

DETOUR, by her daughter Cheryl Crane is an incredible read and gives much insight to Lana, the Stompanato case and growing up in Hollywood. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

  7. Praise St. Angie! says:

Raven, that was a GREAT scene.

  8. Tess says:

It’s inconceivable that Lana would let her daughter take the rap for a homicide she didn’t commit.

    I think Cheryl did it.

I think Cheryl was painfully lonely and desperate for her mother’s love and attention. Lana, however, was focussed on herself, her career and her lovelife…and probably had little time for her daughter.

I think the horror of what Cheryl was hearing and witnessing just took over and sparked her desire to protect her mother and earn her mother’s love.

Lana was probably narcissistic, but I can’t imagine she was the kind of psycho monster who could stand by and watch her daughter suffer and lie to protect her.

Cheryl came out as a lesbian in her mid-forties. Maybe always searching for the female affection she was denied as a child. Probably never trusted men after the kind of men her mother exposed her to.

  9. k says:

Imitation of Life is a truly amazing film

  10. liz says:

Sounds like the sonofabitch had it coming.

  11. Crash2GO2 says:

Good Lord what an awful story.

  12. ninjajeje says:

I loved her in “The Bad & the Beautiful” (MGM 1952) she plays Georgia Lorrison opposite Kirk Douglas in a role that’s rumored to be modeled after Diana Barrymore. Does such a great job. As much as I loathe Heigl, she really does bear a strong resemblance to Lana.

  13. TQB says:

This is the scandal I first thought of when Vintage Scandal Mondays came up. It’s huge. Next request: Patricia Neal aborting Cary Grant’s lovechild. Discuss!

  14. wunderkindt says:

Lord, what a good aweful scandal!

Love these vintage Hollywood scandals. . Has anyone written a book compiling a bunch of them?

  15. TQB says:

@SammyHamm, yes, I think Theron has the proper “regal bearing” to do Turner. Perfect.

  16. Hautie says:

I read the book too. The one from Cheryl Crane. It is worth reading if you can locate a copy.

(And the one by Betty Davis daughter is really great too. Betty was not a stable lady…)

It is truly disturbing how many of those kids from the 1940’s-1950’s Hollywood era, got screwed by their parents own crappy behavior.

Lana was 38 when this tragic event took place. Can you image being 38 and your 15 year old daughter has to protect you from a crazy boyfriend? That ends in his death.

I hope, I would have done better by her and not had the girl tossed in that unfortunate place that Cheryl ended up at…

  17. Jean says:

    @db8ng1
Catherine Zeta-Jones was once attached to star as Lana Turner in a “Stompanato” film due in 2011, but I’m not sure whether she is still in the running.

  18. mila says:

I know it’s crazy but I always think that Beyonce really resembles Lana, especially from her Postman times.

  19. Nanea says:

Years and years ago there were talks of making a movie called “Stompanato” with Keanu* as Johnny S and Catherine Zeta Jones as Lana. I don’t remember who was supposed to be the daughter. Adrian Lyne was attached to direct but eventually the whole project fizzled out.

*Funny coincidence that was that cupcake/Sad Keanu post earlier today!

I like VSM and have been looking forward to it.

  20. Leticia says:

    He had it coming!

  21. Aqua says:

Now theirs a true Hollywood scandal not like what they call a scandal nowadays.Heard this story many a times, boy Lana Turner and Joan Crawford were not exactly fit mothers were they.I love VSM let hope CB keeps it going for a while.

  22. buenavissta says:

Cheryl Crane’s book broke my heart. She says she did it and her own story gives such good context, you can’t help but feel sorry for her.

  23. Bobby the K says:

    wunderkindt: Check out ‘Hollywood Babylon’.

  24. Cheyenne says:

@Tess: Being repeatedly raped by your stepfather at the age of 11 or 12 is probably sufficient to turn any woman off men.

  25. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Charlize Theron, ha! You win this thread.

    ***

Lana Turner: Sad kid grown into a miserable adult who never grew up.

  26. Mary Jane says:

Jo ‘Mama’ I thought that was a wicked choice too!

  27. I Choose Me says:

I’m loving Vintage Scandal Monday Kaiser. While the details are horrible this is what a TRUE scandal is all about. Cheers to Celebitchy and Kaiser for listening to us and consistently giving us the goods!

  28. mslewis says:

I never believed for a minute that Lana Turner killed Stompanato. It was Cheryl and she readily admitted it back then and in every interview and book. I never had any doubt but people love a good conspiracy theory. Besides, think how much money Cheryl could get for a story about her mother killing Stompanato and letting her take the rap!! What a movie that would make!!

I remember when Cheryl “came out” and Lana said to a friend: “I’ll never have grandchildren.” She was, as usual, only thinking about herself. It was many years ago that I learned Cheryl was raped by Lex Barker. She said it on a TV talk show (I think it was the old Mike Douglas Show) and there was a friend of Barker’s in the audience who argued with Cheryl, saying he did not believe Lex would do anything like that. However, Cheryl was calm and continued to tell her story. The man finally said he believed her after she said that when she finally told her mother, Barker was thrown out of the house. Barker’s friend said he always wondered what happen so quickly to end the marriage.

I just always thought Cheryl was such a sad girl and I was happy when she said she was in a great relationship with her partner. I don’t think I want a movie made. I can’t imagine it would be healthy to bring all this up again.

  29. Harmony says:

Kaiser, its reasons like this that this is the only gossip site I visit. This site has the BEST: vintage scandals, hot guy fridays, crack shenanigans tweets lol…love you guys! These vintage scandal posts are FASCINATING! Old Hollywood really was more scandalous, wasn’t it?

I had no idea this happened! Lana Turner a probable murderer? Who’d have guessed? :O

  30. jane16 says:

Ahhh. Great story, and great thread! My mom ran with a wild Hollywood crowd in the 50’s and met a lot of the stars. She ran into Lana a few times (Lana was a lot older) & said Lana was a self obsessed bitch.

  31. hellen says:

Lana was a crappy mother, but I never believed that she did it and let Cheryl take the rap. But I do think Cheryl loved her mother more than her mother loved her.

  32. Jeri says:

Dakota Fanning would be a good Cheryl. Or even her sister, is her name Ellie?

They really liked their tinsel in those days, didn’t they!

  33. Melanie says:

    I’m loving vintage scandal Monday.

  34. Raccoon Princess says:

I read once that Lana Turner said of Stompanado, “I don’t know if the screwing I’m getting is worth the screwing I’m getting.”

  35. apsutter says:

I am no way ashamed in saying that I look forward to vintage scandal monday all week.

  36. Jo says:

love VSM I read the book also…. Cheryl was on Larry King once too!!

  37. Tazina says:

That is a great line Raccoon Princess! I too think Cheryl killed Stompanato. It would be very difficult for a 14 year old to hold on to a lie like that. It i indeed sad she was molested by Lex Barker. She and her mom eventually reconciled.

  38. L says:

@TQB You mean Gary Cooper right? I always thought it was Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal.

  39. Isa says:

I think Charlize would be a good choice. But she might not want to play in the movie. Her mother killed her father when he was in a drunken rage.

  40. neelyo says:

    Two more things:

According to DETOUR, Lana at first did not believe Cheryl’s stories about Lex Barker. It was her grandmother who believed her and finally took her to a doctor.

Lana shaved her eyebrows when she was an extra in THE ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO (1938) and they never grew back.

I’m an old movie fanatic who knows way too much trivia about this stuff. Yay Vintage Scandal Monday!

  41. jan says:

    Lana may have..

  42. jan says:

I read Cheryl’s book. She ended up in lesbianism. Well, if that stuff is true about her abuse, that wouldn’t be a surprise.

    Sad story, all of it.

  43. Tiffany says:

    Kaiser,

You name dropped Tyrone Power and I have been requesting him for weeks for HGF coughalongwithGregoryPeckcough. Alright, rant over, keep up the Vintage Scandal Monday. How about some good Judy Garland/Vincente Minnelli (just how tight was he with Alfred Freed). Cary Grant/Sophia Loren, Tyrone Power and any female within walking distance and he bisexuality. You could go on woman!

  44. badrockandroll says:

Sharon Stone said that Lana Turner had ok’d her just before she died. She felt that she had been dumped by the producers for CJZ when CJZ was hot. now neither are, so who knows?

Hollywood Babylon is a sordid book with no kindness or sympathy. Couldn’t stand it – much prefer a “novel” called Movieola, which has fictional characters on the fringe of real stars telling and uniting the stories as the years pass and the industry changes. Can’t remember the author, but he was a real insider during the glory years.

I ditto the love for VSM, and nominate Rita Hayworth, another beautiful lady with too much sadness in her life.

  45. Jen says:

Holy hell, I thought the header pic was Lindsay Lohan. How f*cked up is THAT?!

  46. ol' movie fanatic says:

Recently finished up Lana’s book; what bitch. Me, me, me!!! Conceit was beyond believeable. I could totally see her convincing Cheryl that she killed Johnny and to take the blame. However, I’m not sure we’ll ever know the truth. No sympathy for Lana here.

  47. jham says:

hate hate hate to admit it but that second pic looks sooo much like LIndsanity… on a good day of course

  48. Fishlips says:

“Vintage Scandal Monday” starts the work week, and “Hot Guy Friday” ends the work week!

    *squeal*

  49. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

She’s done some good work, no doubt. Still, that funeral scene in IofL with Mahalia Jackson is transcendant.

It’s on YouTube, look it up. Now.

  50. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Have you looked it up? Are you crying?

  51. PsychicEyes says:

For anyone who would like to know a bit more on her life and many, many interesting tibits go to Findadeath website at:

    Thanks-I’ll check out that book!

  53. cprincess says:

I love Imitation of Life and I love Lana Turner who looked amazing right up until she died but yeah shes probably the one who stuck the knife in…

  54. Lady D says:

This is exactly what I envisioned for VSM. A fascinating story. Excellent work Kaiser, thank you.

  55. Lenore says:

I actually can see how a mother would let her daughter take the rap for murder without it necessarily being totally cold-blooded and self-serving – it’s a theory I’ve heard before in relation to this case specifically, I think it was an old copy of Empire magazine ran a terrific article on the Stompanato murder.

The theory ran that Cheryl, as a minor acting in self-defence and defence of her mother, would get more sympathy from the jury than Lana, an adult who chose to allow the man into their home and their life even knowing what a thug he was. So they let Cheryl take the blame just to keep Lana out of the chair and keep them both united.

The article suggested that it wasn’t simply a case of letting Lana off the hook, it was in a weird way for Cheryl’s sake too, so that at least her mother would not end up in prison, and they would still have each other. I can see how if I were Cheryl I’d hate to lose my mother too. (Nothing brings a mother and daughter closer than realising your boyfriend is a violent misogynist as you take turns to hold the knife, I guess.)

The article also detailed how Lana put on a hell of a performance in court, better than anything she ever put on screen, clutching her handkerchief and choking back the tears; how it paralleled her Oscar-nominated turn in Peyton Place so perfectly that nobody could have written it better.

Honestly, it really should be a movie. And Charlize Theron would be a pretty good choice – certainly her family history would make it frighteningly poignant (didn’t her mother kill her stepfather in self-defence after years of domestic violence?)

  56. Shay says:

The mafioso wasn’t a huge loss to humanity. So what?

  57. D says:

Thank you for Vintage Scandal Mondays!!!

  58. Whitey Fisk says:

Oh, how I love Vintage Scandal Monday! Great thread!

  59. TeeTee says:

    LOVE it!!!!

sorry, I think Lana did it, always have.

Is the daughter still alive??? her only normalcy was her poor lil grandmother.
    sad!

    Scarlett Johansen could play Lana!!

    sultry, led by passion etc.

    I love old Hollywood scandal!!!

Lana, Olivia DeHaviland, Betty Davis, Joan Crawford and Heddy Lamar, thy do not make them anymore like these ladies.

An old Betty Davis and Olivia movie is on now.

  60. Joan says:

I also don’t believe that Lana Turner killed Johnny Stompanato and allowed her daughter to take the blame, nor do I think the murder went the way it has been described. Supposedly the bed was filled with blood – I’m not sure how that could be. However, the studios always came in before the police and set the scene, so they say.

As far as the article saying Cheryl took the rap so she wouldn’t lose her mother, forget it. Lana would go off on trips and leave Cheryl for as long as a year. I don’t think Cheryl was that used to having her around anyway.
I have a hard time believing Lana would have gotten the chair – name the Hollywood star/celebrity who has been convicted of murder or, for that matter, much else. Errol Flynn for statutory rape? Robert Blake, who went back to a restaurant for his gun and when he came out his wife was dead? O.J. Simpson? Phil Spector the first time around (and they barely got a conviction the second time). I think Jerry Geisler would have earned his money for Lana.

I have had dealings with Cheryl Crane, and she is an absolutely lovely woman. I also own some of the jewelry that Tyrone Power gave Lana, and I love wearing it.

  61. truthSF says:

Cheryl should’ve used the “He ran into my knife” defense.

  62. dj says:

I have read about this years ago. If Lana was as narcissistic as has been written about it would totally fit that she killed him (which I have always thought) and let her poor daughter take the fall. I hypothesize that she may have thought her jury testimony was the performance of her life. It would also make sense you would want to send any reminder (i.e., daughter) of what a crappy mom she was away. Just conjecture.

  63. Dana says:

If there would have been forensic science in 1958 Lana Turner would have been convicted for the murder of Johnny Stompanato! She did it and she ruined her daughter ‘ s life who has gone along with this lie all these years. The truth will set you free Cheryl ,as you know you did not commit that murder. Lana is somewhere in the afterlife paying for her lies and you are more of a victim than anyone.
