Rachael Ray mistaken for a terrorist sympathizer

It’s a strange day indeed when you can’t watch Rachael Ray wearing a scarf, but it seems that Dunkin’ Donuts knows how to make one good publicity stunt.

Does Dunkin’ Donuts really think its customers could mistake Rachael Ray for a terrorist sympathizer? The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men. Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin’ Donuts boycott. “The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad,” Malkin yowls in her syndicated column. “Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons.”

The Boston Globe

The keffiyeh is generally worn to protect the head from heat. It is not a particular symbol of any kind of terrorist, but rather an item of clothing worn by people living in hot climates, as it keeps the sun off the head (very important if you haven’t a great deal of hair) and soaks up the sweat. It is also worn by British soldiers, but called a shemaghs, because it keeps the head warm in cooler climates.

It became a symbol of Palestine after Yassar Arafat wore it.

This is more of a cultural garment, and I think Rachael Ray is wearing a scarf as a fashion accessory. The same way she might have worn a kimono, a tartan skirt or kilt, or a mandarin collar, without being a Geisha, Scottish clansman, or Chinese sympathizer.

Michelle Malkin, the columnist who got us all talking, had this to add:

“It’s refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists.”

I know this is going to cause some controversy, but it might have been nice to show some sensitivity to the people across the globe who wears this garment as a way to protect their heads from the weather, not to keep their hair out of their eyes while committing acts of terrorism.

I will also add that I am not American, but Australian, and the terrorists who attacked Australians in Indonesia, and the ones who committed the London tube bombings, did not wear a keffiyeh, so I don’t associate this headdress with terrorism, but maybe it is different to people living in the USA, following the images of Osama bin Laden after 9/11.

I don’t think it looks like a keffiyeh at all, I think it looks like an ugly stringy scarf. I have to admit to an involuntary giggle when I thought of her as a terrorist, though.

I wonder how she gets half her upper lip to curl like that?

  2. geronimo says:

“Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin…”

No further comment necessary. Stupid, moronic shit-stirrer.

Shove a couple of donuts in your cake-hole and give your brain something to do. At least if you’re eating, you can’t be talking or thinking, not with that brain.

  3. AC says:

🙄 yeah … cause other companies totally disregard americas concerns about terrorism…

what the hell does that even mean!?

I don’t associate it with terrorism… i think its an ugly scarf but other than that I don’t see what the problem is.

  4. anni says:

gosh. talk about respecting other cultures, when everything arabian or islamic is instantly proclaimed as dangerous, threatening or related to terrorism. is that how how american politics work? feeding the fear? i recently watched a clip of an radio anchor who got the masses shivering at a mcCain campagne…he read the first two names of obama and went: “those are islamic names…sounds dangerous to me”

  5. Nikki says:

This style of inexpensive scarf has been sold on the streets of Manhattan for years – WAY before 9/11. If it symbolizes anything it’s of a very passe look. It’s fashion faux pas people, not jihad. It upsets me that Dunkin’ Donuts responded to Malkin’s hysterics and button pushing. Obviously she thinks up her crazy cause du jour over coffee each morning. Coffee and donuts.

  6. dancingnancie81 says:

Maybe i’m just one of those ignorant Americans who think war is bad and not all Muslims are terrorists, but all I see – and don’t get crazy on me now – is an ‘EFFIN UGLY SCARF! News commentators are useless talking heads who have nothing better to do than stir up anger in their own backyard. Bad, bad American *smack smack*!!

  7. Erin says:

I just got back from a couple of months in Europe and EVERYONE wears that scarf. You can’t take a step in a major city in Western Europe without seeing one of them. Why is this such a big deal?

  8. BLA says:

I agree with Erin: It seems like every other kid here in Germany has one of those scarfs on and tied in the same fashion as Rachael’s. Michelle Malkin is no match for a country of emo-hipster-hot-topic-wannabes. 😛

  9. Mairead says:

Who is she? Why is she lecturing me? (whilst drinking a Dunkin’ Donuts coffee? that’s some cheek)and why on earth did she arrange the scarf so poorly?

“yowls in her syndicated column”… heh!

  10. headache says:

Well since we are giving up all things Arab related in fear of spreading terrorism, I hope miss Malkin will stop using gasoline, growing her garden, belly dancing, eating couscous, using algebra or the number zero.

She should probably also consider giving up precious metals, metal alloys, and basic understanding of human anatomy.

  11. Bodhi says:

Damn, y’all had it all covered when I got here! I just think its an ugly ass scarf on a really annoying person.

  12. Devilgirl says:

I don’t think she is a terrorist sympathizer, I just think she is annoying. The last thing I want to see is her on t.v anymore than I have to.

  13. Mairead says:

Thankfully Ms Lecturey woman doesn’t seem to be on UK/Irish telly at all, although we can get Fox News on satellite.

Maklin’s powers of reasoning are astounding! By her fuzzy logic, in the past, anybody who listened to Enya would have been an IRA-sympathiser. Therefore, if you wore orange, then naturally you were pro-Unionist 🙄

  14. Nan says:

RR is just a cutesy person. That Michelle should be quiet.

  15. elisha says:

Her stylist put that on her. Urban Outfitters sells them.

  16. Vince says:

Why does Michelle Malkin hate all the US soldiers who wear the same damn thing to protect themselves from the sun?

In case you wanted to buy one. Dont let the ignorant bigots win.

  17. Devilgirl says:

All this controversy has me wanting an iced coffee! 😛

  18. daisfly says:

    1. Anything with the name “Michelle Malkin” in it is automatically flush worthy.

    2. Those terrorists also wore t-shirts. All t-shirt wearers should now be weary of being labeled apologists for terrorism.

    3. The 9/11 terrorists were born male. All peoples born male are now suspect of being apologists for terrorism.

    4. Stupid people breed. If they didn’t, we wouldn’t have people like Michelle Malkin.

  19. vdantev says:

Michelle Malkin embodies all the thoughtless, knee-jerk, fear-mongering hysteria that have kept the GOP in power for far too long. How stupid are people STILL for believing this drivel ?

  20. Jojo says:

It is disgusting that they are trying to criminalize traditional arab dress. The “Powers That Be” really want to create a negative association with everything Arab. Gee, I wonder why ?

  21. Courtney says:

The best thing about this is that it’s not even a keffiyeh. Stupid Malkin commented on what it supposedly represents “for the clueless,” yet he failed to even realize that it’s just a dumb scarf with a paisley print.

I would say something about supporting Palestinians doesn’t make you a terrorist, but I feel most people who aren’t right-wing jerks like this guy already realize that.

  22. Donaldo says:

I wish they’d send Rachael Ray to Gitmo just to be safe.

Funny thing is, if Rachael Ray really was in a Muslim country, all you’d be able to see were her eyes since she’d be wearing a burka. If she dressed like this in Saudi Arabia, she would be beaten senseless by the police.

  23. lanette says:

this is so stupid; i would never admit i am from america…when i travel outside of the country i say i am from Canada.

  24. insidescoop says:

WHAT?!!! Are you serious? The woman is wearing a fringed scarf and so now she is, what, paying homage to terrorism? Hmm, well my mom came of age in the 60s and she has a lot of fringed, cotton, patterned scarves, I guess that means that she supports terrorism too. Thanks for enlightening me about the true nature of Rachel Ray and my mother Fox news. Think of how much less red-blooded American I would be with out you, oh the horror!

  25. Kat says:

Dunkin Donuts, Michelle Malkin and Fox News are all idiots. Must be a slow news day for them to be talking about a ugly ass scarf.

  26. bros says:

what a load of BS. its a black and white printed scarf, and as others have said, worn all over europe and especially in Argentina by the gauchos and is a symbol of cultural affiliation. its similar to what the kefiyya looks like but checkered differently and worn around the neck similar to ray’s. i cant believe malkin thinks this is worthy of getting her panties in a bunch. there are way more pressing issues of national security, such as the fact that the Dept of homeland security has more political appointees than almost any other dept. and the people supposedly protecting us from terrorists arent asked whether they speak another language or have been outside the country, but are asked how they feel about gay marriage and abortions. that seems to me a much more serious breach of security than ray’s freaking fashion accessory. its so absurd that it makes me speechless that fox would focus on this for 2 seconds while ignoring piles and piles and mounds of other amazing security shortcomings we have as the result of our buffoon presidents policies.

  27. countrybabe says:

I really don’t see why she was wearing it in the ad, but why can’t she wear it. What’s the problem. That’s like saying when you travel to middle eastern countries you can’t but clothing and wear it here?

  28. Jaundice Machine says:

Wow. It must be an election year . . .

  29. Elle says:

Rachel Ray is a terrorist? I know she’s on a jihad against lengthy meal preparation. (Cue comedic drum thingy)

Seriously though, as an American, I was offended by Dunkin Donuts. It’s not cool to pull these ads and give in to that crazy “all middle eastern men are terrorists” propaganda. I’ll be boycotting for that reason, and I’ll write a letter too.

And, I say that as the whitest suburban girl on Earth. The person least likely to be racially profiled as anything. It’s still really f***ing offensive.

  30. Cheekybugger says:

The only crime Rachel Ray is guilty of is wearing that ugly scarf. Also, affiliating any type of clothing with a stereotype is only something a right-wing, gum-flapping, nonsensical idiot would do. That is like saying that if you wear a white tank, you are supporting Hispanic gangs. Come on, it’s not like she is pulling a Prince Harry here.

  31. hilmo says:

I had a black and white keffiyah that i was so happy to buy on St. Marks Place, NYC in about 1984.
I’d seen a deelish picture of Bob Geldof wearing one and was thrilled to cop his style.
Eighties NY the things were on everyone.
Back in Texas, not so much.
But I wore mine every day for sseveral years.
Moved to London in ’85 and they really were all over the place.

Once, in a Liverpool coffee shop , some guy started lecturing on the “meaning” of my scarf. I told the guy thaay I liked it, it was practical.
He said I wouldn’t feel that way if I were standing in the middle of the Israeli desert. (he was an american who claimed to be some sort of mercenary.)
    Yeah , umm, ok mister.
I liked that scarf – I think it wound up as a sort of tablecloth.
Now it kinda makes me laugh to see the kaffeyeh thing springing up like dandelions, some 20 years later.

Alas , now we have dumbass shouters on TV stirring up people that could have as easily been convinced that a car chamois cloth is pure Terr-riss symbolism.
And don’t even go there with Swiffers. Everyone knows what those things really are!

I was lucky to have a simple, handsome American mercenary soldier.

That woman is a complete jackass. Who in their right minds would say something like this? An idiot with nothing better to do than piss off the rest of us. Tell her to shut the hell up you stupid b*tch!!
PS: Elle, I totally agree with you – we should boycott Dunkin Donuts for caving in & allowing these morons to continue this kind of nonsense.

  33. i know the keffiyeh says:

    This is redic.

number one… the keffiyeh represents the ongoing Palestinian struggle. It DOES NOT represent terrorism.
Its also a scarf that protects the hot heat of the Middle Eastn during the day, and the chilly cool breezes of the night.
Its a tradtional Middle Eastern headdress for men, and it has become a large fashion trend world wide. They even re-create the keffiyeh, using bright colors, and other designs like hearts and skulls. And have been sold everywhere from small street shops, to stores like forever 21.

Urban outfitter was prob. one of the first stores to get it out there, yet it was protested by Israelis saying it was a terrorist scarf (which is prob what gave everyone the idea that was) yet the idea of the keffiyeh has been mocked by israelis with their idea of their keffiyeh in a light blue, with the star of david. This protest by Israelis on Urban Outfitter had forced the popular street store to take their keffiyehs off the shelves of their U.S stores, yet it remained on the shelves of their European stores.

It is not a terrorist scarf. It is simply a scarf traditionally worn in that region of the world. And fashionably worn all around the rest of the world. And by Rachel Ray wearing it, I am sure she had no other understanding of the scarf other then it being a simple fashion statement…

  34. dan says:

    thank you anni! great comment!

  35. dan says:

“Rachel Ray is a terrorist? I know she’s on a jihad against lengthy meal preparation. (Cue comedic drum thingy)”

well that is kinda funny as it appears you don’t seem to know the meaning of “jihad” (heres a clue-it doesn’t mean “holy war”)
