Miley Cyrus tells the paparazzi to stop driving dangerously

There’s new video of Miley Cyrus telling the paparazzi that they need to back off and stop following her. In the video, she pulls over, walks up to the photographer’s window and says that the driver of another car is calling the cops on him for cutting him off. It’s notable not just for the fact that Miley is rightfully annoyed at the paparazzi, but because of how well and calmly she handles the situation. Miley is in control and she doesn’t get upset while she tells the photographer he’s not going to follow her any longer. She’s very respectful in a situation where other celebrities might be screaming at the guy to leave. The girl knows how to handle herself, that’s for sure.

This is Miley’s second recent confrontation with a paparazzo. She told a photographer from Splash news to stop taping her while she was having lunch with her little 10 year-old sister. (The video is here and photos below.) That was the day that Miley went out in a thin white t-shirt without a bra. She could dress a little more modestly, but I can’t fault her for the way she’s handing the paparazzi. She’s telling them to lay off and is doing it calmly and assertively. To the earlier photographer, she said “You were disrespectful and rude. Have some class, dude.”

I like Miley so much more after this. She’s not throwing coffee at photographers (like Shia LaBeouf recently), screaming and swearing at them (like Julia Roberts), hitting them (Russell Brand) or smashing their cameras (Kanye West) she’s just calling them on their bad behavior. This girl is 17 year-old and she’s handling herself better than many adults with years more experience in the business. If only she would stop trying to act like an adult in her music videos too.

I understand Julia Roberts getting upset. I have never see her angry with paps before and she was upset someone followed her with her babies.

I agree that Miley handled this well.

  2. Susan says:

    Good for her.

  3. sisi says:

wow, she handled that really well. I did not expect that of her.

  4. Lenore says:

    Good for Miley.

But honestly, I don’t fault any celebrity for any action they take against a paparazzo. If some creep was following me around all day, taking pictures of me without permission, that would be stalking, and I would damn well defend myself verbally, legally, and physically if it came to that.

I mean, I can’t bear Julia Roberts but she had every right to yell at the paparazzi that time. I don’t buy the excuse that it’s acceptable to follow someone around and spy on them just because they had a hit record or are on a TV show.

I’ve heard people say, “Well, they have to expect it, they’re famous” – why? They do a job, they get paid for the job. That job is acting, or singing, or modelling. You pay to see their movie or buy their record, and the transaction is over. “Oh, I’ve supported them throughout their career, they OWE me!” Um, no. You paid your eight quid, you saw the movie, END OF STORY. You don’t own them. That’s like saying that I supported my local supermarket checkout girl by paying for products in her store, ergo she ought to show her gratitude by allowing me to follow her home and peer through her window with my Canon.

Buying an album or DVD does not entitle the public to see pictures of the celebrity on the beach, holidaying with family, or taking the kids to school, or queueing up at Starbucks, or picking their nose in traffic, or anything else outside of a promotional event.

The thing is, my friend is a photographer, and if he uses someone as a model, a volunteer, he has to obtain a signed release (this is in the UK) to be able to use the pictures. If they don’t sign it, he can’t sell the pictures, display the pictures, anything. I imagine there’s a similar law in the US, but I’d be interested to know for sure. So what is it about celebrities, actors, singers, that makes people think, “Well, hey, they don’t have the same human rights as anyone else. Get ’em on long lens, and the kids too”?

It really makes me sick. [/rant]

Oh damn, now I regret clicking on this article. I have to respect Miley? Really? Damn.

  6. Lway says:

Phuleeez – in SA, She’s not even old enough to drive a car yet. She should just go away……. and STFU!

  7. flourpot says:

Lets talk again in a few years when her patience level for the paps has dwindled. RIght now, she likes seeing herself on magazine covers. She likes coming to these gossip sites and reading what people say about her. She’s a teenager. It’s ego. She knows that when she walks up to a pap she’ll get more coverage. She’s not stupid – just sleazy.

  8. Po says:

I’m with you flourpot. Give it a couple of years when she doesn’t have a tv show on or is feeling a little more bitter.

  9. Wiley says:

Britney liked to cohort with the paps too! Miley is the new Britney!

  10. original kate says:

she did handle it well. oh miley, don’t make me admire you. damn!

  11. I Choose Me says:

@Lenore. I heartily co-sign every word you said.

  12. Obvious says:

*sigh* she just had to be respectful and mature. may i hate her or that now?

  13. KJ says:

I can’t watch the video as I’m at work right now and can’t find my headphones in the black hole that is my purse, but I saw the earlier video of her asking the girl not to tape her. I commend Miley for that, and from the video description, commend her for this instance too. Most times, I ignore her. She’s not my taste of music and I don’t care for her as a celebrity, but I totally understand why she would stop this guy. I hate when people defend paparazzos, ESPECIALLY when they’re so reckless and obnoxious. It’s one thing to take a picture of someone from a respectful distance (even then I find the whole thing creepy), it’s entirely another to drive like a maniac or provoke people like a jackass.

  14. lu says:

Let’s get an ice cream? wtf
Was he inviting her to ice cream, or did I get confused by his accent?
    Creepy

  15. Shy says:

Yes this was very adult conversation from Cyrus. Who could knew. Especially when you remember how recent Shia was throwing the coffee at pap. That was so 8-year old from him. He is such a trash. The way he dresses. You know what a wanted to see after that Shia video? How some pap will come to Shia and will throw the coffee at him 🙂 I would die to see his reaction.

  16. lilred says:

@ lenore: here, here. Very well said.

  17. Go Miley, i like her.

  18. Liana says:

good for her. She handled herself well. I can’t stand the paps and would gladly continue to read gossip sites even without pics.

  19. skeptical says:

    @lenore
    well said!

  20. Faye says:

I think that once she grows up a bit more, we’ll see more and more of this reasonable behavior and maybe she’ll grow more as an artist. I’ve been one to snort at her dumb antics but then I recall what I was like when I was a teenager, and then I feel I should give her some slack. After seeing this, the wee bit of slack I cut her has been extended.

I’m agitated all these article directories. It sure would be nice to have every article directory that instantly accepts articles.
