Taylor Swift will only discuss John Mayer through song

people

Taylor Swift is the cover girl for this week’s People Magazine, and the interview seems like it’s just a promotional piece for her new album, and Swifty talking about how happy she is to be single. She might even mention John Mayer in the piece – but there are no quotes about him in People’s excerpts thus far. Now, in yesterday’s Taylor Swift story – about how she wrote a “F-ck you, Douchenozzle” song about John Mayer – I called Taylor an a–hole, and some of you got upset. Let me clarify: I still think she’s an a–hole, and I’m not going to change my opinion. But I will say that I think she’s an a–hole in the way that many, many 19-year-old girls are a–holes, and in the way that I was an a–hole when I was 19 (and still am, probably?).

I think I was disappointed with Swift’s “Dear John” song because she strikes me as a smart young woman, and she should have been smart enough to not get involved with such an obvious douche as Mayer. It’s not like she wasn’t warned – EVERYONE warned her. She was even “dating” Mayer through that racist, homophobic, misogynistic Playboy douche explosion in the spring. She knew what she was getting into, and I’m not going to say “Oh, she was only 19 years old!” She knew what she was doing, and she boned him because she wanted to, because she didn’t care about all of the neon signs pointing to the fact that Mayer is a massive tool. And when he lived up to his toolbox promise and dicked her over, she wrote a whiny little song about it, calling him out? Please. Stop mollycoddling Swifty. She’s not a little girl-princess who will never be soiled – she’s an a–hole, just the same as every other 19-year-old girl.

Taylor Swift does not like talking about her personal life. Singing about it is another story.

“I will say everything in my music,” says the 20-year-old country star. And the past two years of her life – a period that included failed relationships with Joe Jonas and Taylor Lautner (and, apparently, some drama with John Mayer) – gave her plenty of material for her emotionally charged new album Speak Now, out Oct. 25.

“There’s been extreme joy, extreme pain, extreme curveballs,” Swift tells PEOPLE in the new issue, available on newsstands Friday. “Sometimes when things impact you so intensely, it takes writing a song to get over them.”

Love, she says, keeps her at once confused and fascinated. But as much as guys inspire her music, Swift doesn’t obsess over her relationship status: “Being single is wonderful and I love it. I don’t ever have a morning where I wake up and say, ‘I really need to find a boyfriend today.'”

[From People]

At first it was kind of cute and funny that Swifty would call people out in songs, but it’s starting to bug me. She’s like a less talented Weird Al Yankovic. We get the references, Swifty! Stop naming names, lest you be called out on your own douchiness.

I agree with you Kaiser, she knew exactly what she was doing when she started dating him.

And the whole “I’ll only discuss John Mayer through song” is great a strategy to make ppl buy her album to get the dirty details.

That sh*t’s going to backfire on her immature ass real soon!!!

  2. ziggy says:

how about just shutting up altogether? sheesh!

  3. Laura says:

People are gonna be scared to date her because if they do anything she’ll write a song about them which will get tons and tons of play and discussion on blog sites.

  4. GT says:

I say good for her! If I was a singer I would probably do the exact same thing. Look how many others have done it before her??

  5. alejandro says:

how about just shutting up altogether? sheesh!

    ==========================================

^ How would she then get attention, get people to feel sympathy for her and sell copious amounts of her insipid music to the general public?

I have no problem with singer-songwriters using their personal lives as inspiration but the way this girl does it is so exploitative and attention whorish, plus her music is awful to boot.

  6. Marjalane says:

I have to agree completely with your analysis- it’s pretty pathetic that her “people” who are presumably grown up and know better, allowed her to put this crybaby stuff out there. I’m embarrassed for her! But the teen crowd will probably eat it up; I wonder how many of them will say: “But Mom, why can’t I date a 30 year old? Taylor Swift did!”

  7. truthSF says:

    @GT:

But how many times have other singers done it? Not with every boyfriend/girlfriend they ever dated. And not when they knew/have been warned about said person like she clearly knew about Mayer.

Bottom line, she wants a hit record and will use anything, especially divulge dirty details about her relationships to sell it.

  8. Jean says:

Is the “untold story” here, that she was the beard for three gay men? And whoever on earth had the nerve to call her a “superstar” should be forced to listen to her songs till kingdom come.

  9. OtherChris says:

I agree she’s talking too much, but I still say he was an idiot for going after a teenager when he’s practically a middle-aged man. If your next door neighbor was doing that, everyone would think he has problems.

  10. Marjalane says:

This is going to be a fun thread to follow and I have to comment on #9; What makes you so sure Mayer went after her?! Just because Taylor “plays” the sweet teen queen doesn’t mean she is one. I think she probably went after him big time! I agree he’s a total douche, but for some reason a lot of women think he’s hot. (and no, I have no idea why)

  11. Oi says:

With you all the way Kaiser. How in the world can she still be called a sweet little girl? She’s manipulative to say the least. Sick of her.

And: get a new hairstyle, new makeup and stand up straight!

  12. grazi says:

does she have to date 11 guys to call them out, and meet another, to fantasize about their fairy tale romance, to be able to release an album with 12 tracks?

  13. SoulLovah says:

This girl can’t be sweet and innocent forever…if she ever was. The whole “writing songs about people who have screwed me” ….”over”….is really immature when you basically brag that you are gonna do it and you aren’t very discreet. A skillful songwriter wouldn’t have to tell the world who she was singing about and wouldn’t even have to name him/her in the song, people would either know or just be mystified, which is how I think it should be anyway. This little act of hers is getting OLDDDD

  14. bitca says:

At 19, I was certainly immature enough about men to have done a guy like Mayer. Would’ve thought he was Misunderstood & Unjustly Vilified, & that I was one of the enlightened few who truly Got him. Then been heartbroken after being summarily dumped. Oh, what a stupid age!

But even so, publicly airing your dumbness & misery, & even NAMING the dude? That is beyond 19-yr-old stupid. And worst, I’m almost certain he’s secretly chuffed & feels super-Casanova-like to have all this proclaimed to the world…

  15. susu says:

i think she didn’t sleep with him because he didn’t want it. she’s no aniston or simpson in the looks department, mayer wouldn’t tap that.

  16. 8908 says:

Who said she dated him. They put out certain lines of the song to get people to assume things. They said relationships with Joe Jonas and Lautner….then they say apparently some drama with John Mayer. John Mayer ran off with Keith Urban and didn’t want to bother with her anymore, probably after Kanyegate. John and Yeezy are homies. This chick writes a song about anybody that tells her she’s not perfect. From her acting like Kanye punched her in the face, I think people would realize how she overdramatizes things.

Her marketers are loving this crap cause people are assuming she dated Mayer, that’s why they released those lines. When people go run out and buy the album they may here a tale of him not wanting to be her mentor anymore.

Or like how she exaggerates things, John may have to come out saying he stop dealing with this child cause she’s so childish.

Why would anybody believe what she has to say when she acted like Kanye gave her a beat down on stage. She wrote a song about folks talking about how she can’t sing….it’s called Mean. Instead of getting some voice lessons she wants to act like everyone elsa is wrong. Girl can’t sing.

Just shows she’s delusional and very self righteous. She’s being held to a higher standard cause of those Grammys. U2 got record of the year, does she compare to them. No. Right now she’s desperate to sale units, cause if she doesn’t they will can her.

  17. Ferguson. says:

Oh Swifty. I guess it’s the only way she can ‘let it all out’. Maybe talking about him with her girlfriends wasnt enough so she decided the whole world (Ok, only the ones who read celebrity blogs and her teen fans) had to know about Mayer being a total douche-bag. Oh, but wait! We already knew that! too late, Swifty.

  18. Tess says:

I wouldn’t exactly call her an a-hole. A twit maybe, which in my mind is worse. Obviously she doesn’t have much life experience so she has to manufacture personal “heartbreak” for musical inspiration. Don’t know why she goes to the trouble since people will listen to anything these days.

  19. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL Poor girl. So Swift really hooked up with John Mayer. IDK, I have been with the forever douche unavailable guys, and I knew in my heart he couldn’t be mine but I went for it anyway, and all it did was break my heart and put me off dating. I don’t think Swift was wrong for falling for John, the man is cute, ripped, and probably sung her Sunday dress and thong right off her. I can hardly blame her.

However the way she puts the guys on front street, outing them they way she does, is kinda gangsta. However talking about how they dogged you isn’t cute. I like revenge songs better.

  20. Amy says:

So she sings about them in songs for the whole world to hear but she refuses to actually discuss it? And the thing is she always says “I talk about my relationships in my songs” and we know exactly who she is dating thanks to tabloids. The fact that she even does this has bugged me from day one, I never found it cute. She kept going on and on about Joe Jonas (who may be a player but not as bad as John Mayer) and it got really old really fast!

She is cute and her songs are entertaining but I honestly don’t care about her love life.

  21. Samantha says:

I don’t feel sorry for her, I’ve never felt sorry for her. Sometimes I wonder if the only reason she dates is so that she can write songs about it. Otherwise we’d be listening to a bunch of songs about being on a tour bus and what she had for dinner last night.

  22. 8908 says:

You people are jumping to conclusions. They said DRAMA with John Mayer. You can have drama with anybody. He just told her to bug off cause he saw what kind of person she is. Wait till the lyrics hit the net. They released the one’s that would have people assume things. It worked. Now folks will run and buy an album. You people seriously think this guy would date this 20 yr old when he could swing a 20 yr old model. Besides I have friends that go see his concerts. They keep me updated and they haven’t even been seen together other than an event . That actually stopped this year. She seemed fine when he gave her an award in June. He seemed to stop dealing with her at even events after January. If they were dating why wasn’t she at any of his concerts? Wait till the lyrics come out and if she puts out lies, wait for Mayer to respond. She’s overdramatic and sees things only in her way not the reality.

She is sick cause she’s trying to make John look like a dirty old man.

  23. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Puhleeeasssee……… She sounds like an immature douche.

We have all been there, get over it already. damn

  24. dannyexplosion says:

in 2011 everybody needs to stop using the word douche…. Who’s with me?

  25. anoneemouse says:

Boy if she thought she had dating problems before then I guess she’s in for it now. Who the heck would want to date someone that would use anything negative that happens in the relationship against them? Kind of like a comic using their spouse to get laughs…uh uh

  26. teresa says:

    HERPES

  27. Kate says:

Taylor needs to grow up as there is waaay too much 19/20 year old drama, but I honestly think she and her people understand that she’s got a limited window within which to cash in and this is the schtick that will do it. My daughters any many like them, buy it hook line and sinker.

The only other thing I will say is that Sheryl Crow has a tendency to write about her personal life/call people out, so this isn’t limited to Taylor. Yes, Sheryl Crow is more adept and subtle, but it’s still there.

I’d also lump Jennifer Aniston into the same group. She’s made a career out of playing the victim in her personal life.

  28. Susana says:

    Will she just sush already!

Jeez am I getting tired of her!

And personally I don’t think age is the problem…she is, and was an adult then…if anything actually happened.

She knew what she was going for…Mayer’s parents are 19 years old apart…so I don’t see that as being a problem for him…

She was adult…now she should just shut up and deal with it…I doubt he forced her to do anything…

    It’s like they say…when one don’t want, two don’t do anything…

  29. Crash2GO2 says:

I’m tempted to give her a pass because she is only 19. But how much better would her songs be if 1) she could sing 2)she could write 3) if she wrote in a more hyperbolic fashion giving us the gist of the angst without the nitty gritty details. It’s as if she thinks if she leaves the names out she is being mysterious.

  30. chasingadalia says:

@8908: He was a skeezebag before any of these rumours started.

The mental image of the two of them boning made me throw up in my mouth a little.

  31. She’s not a little girl-princess who will never be soiled – she’s an a–hole, just the same as every other 19-year-old girl. <<< YES HAHA SO TRUE, DUMB BITCH…

  32. cantbelievethis says:

If I was here I wouldn’t write a song about how JM broke my heart. I would’ve written a song about how he was the size of a thumbtack, sucked in bed, etc. I’d never give some guy the satisfaction of knowing they broke my heart.

  33. Fire says:

I’m almost positive that she threw herself at him, and him being a guy, gave in and banged her. He had to, that’s what he does. She was warned by everyone and did it anyway. So, imo she doesn’t deserve to put it in a song and make money off it. I probably would have f*cked him too (but WELL protected!) – the bad boy is so hard to resist! But, knowing what you are getting yourself into and then it actually happening – no surprise. No reason to call him out. He makes no bones about who he is and what he does. And even though she puts this “only 19 and doesn’t know any better” facade up – sorry honey, you DID know better. Writing a song about you getting hurt by “Dear John” just makes you look like an idiot.

And yes, dannyexplosion, “douche” needs to take a hiatus in 2011. It is “totes” overused! (and I HATE “totes” as well. ANNOYING!)

  34. Marjalane says:

Oddly enough, Lainey has a bit today that’s pretty supportive of Taylor Swift, which makes me think she must REALLY hate Mayer. I’m not getting behind the “he was in his 30’s and should have known better than to break her heart” action; Given that she has her parents, managers, handlers, etc. advising her on everything, it’s a good bet she made this decision all by herself.

  35. jover says:

Tess you nailed it (no pun intended); talentless pedestrian swifty, like so many other young pop “stars” have so little real world experience, and once they make it, are enclosed in a celebrity bubble walling them off from the real world, that they have to manufacture themes for their ahem songs. But since people will listen to anything skillfully marketed to them, this talentless fraud is laughing all the way to the bank and I’m getting ready for my second shift maintenance job.

  36. Kbomb says:

She’s going to look back at her songs and her quotes when she’s in her 30’s or 40’s and be super embarrassed.

  37. 8908 says:

He was a skeeze bag before cause he dated two chicks and dumped them. Chicks only who only wanted him for attention. Same reason he bothered with them, to get empty attention. To be cool. He found out it wasn’t cool. That’s why he’s shut down his twitter… doesn’t blog anymore. No pap shots of him. He sold out people that used him to sale magazines Aniston and Simpson. Has John ever had anyone elsa bag on him besides these publicity hounds. No. Just Taylor who he told to get lost after trying to mentor her. Aniston whose sold out everybody under the sun and Simpson whose sold out everybody under the son. The guy is working on getting away from the bull and here this fool comes. HE SHOULVE KNOWN, cause anytime this chick gets rejected by someone she has a temper tantrum. Rejection could be any kind, like with West and now it’s Mayer who said he didn’t want to bother with her anymore. Not be a mentor or someone she could brag about being friends with.

People said DRAMA with John not relationship
let’s wait for the lyrics. If she tries to indicate a romance ….that will be squashed by his people. I think they are waiting for the actual dong to come out.

  38. Eleonor says:

People are gonna be scared to date her because if they do anything she’ll write a song about them
    ——————————————————————————————————
LOL! And after she’ll write other songs on which she complains that nobody is dating her!

  39. Jeri says:

I like her and I agree she should stop writing about her ex’s. More tattling could put her in the same category as them.

  40. funny_girl says:

This girl is totally playing up to the
“butter wouldn’t melt” image cos she knows her career will go downhill if she does a miley cyrus (ie dress like a slut etc.) She must be thanking her lucky starts every day about the kanye west incident, it gave her such good publicity. I had barely heard of her before and now the girl is eveywhere.. urgh

  41. Trace says:

You’re right on, Kaiser! Swifty is grating on my last nerve. She can’t sing, and her songs are pedestrian. How in the world is she even a grammy winner?! It’s becoming apparent that she plays the sympathy card to sell her “music”. I would be amazed if she is still around 5 years from now.

  42. cantbelievethis says:

‘Just Taylor who he told to get lost after trying to mentor her. ‘

And how do you know all this?

  43. 8908 says:

You haven’t been paying attention. Taylor said herself he was a mentor, but he found out her vindictive ways. Said by.e. You collab with people, doesn’t mean they are going to be your friend forever. When have they been seen hanging out. Music events and that was over in after January. He presented her with a writing award to be nice in July and then bid her goodbye.

  44. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Who are you calling an asshole? I was in school full-time with two jobs and had to keep house because my mother did crazy shift work when I was nineteen. I was too damned tired to bone jerks. I was definitely in the ‘she needs to get laid’ camp.

  45. Amanda says:

I didn’t know that Taylor Swift and John Mayer dated, or, err, whatever you want to call it. What a strange match. He usually goes for the sex bomb types- like the sexaaay laydeeees. Taylor seems kinda… meek? Well, maybe they both got attention out of it and that’s what they wanted (and Taylor got a nifty little song).

  46. Madison says:

Sweetie, move on already, this is getting real old. You already did the man who done me wrong song with all the other guys you dated, find some other way to market your crappy music and to get a People cover.

  47. LT says:

I think it’s fine if she wrote the song about him – I mean after all most artists who write their own material draw from real life, but to name it “Dear John”? Yeesh Taylor. Seems like a rash decision that she’s going to regret!

  48. quixotic says:

This girl needs to go away!!!

  49. Az says:

Oh or fuck’s sake, who hasn’t banged a much older man at nineteen (ok, 22) and gotten their heart broken? Bitch, please.

  50. lisa says:

I don’t like what she is doing at all.. She is being very manipulative. Using the fact of AGE to get away with what she would not be able to do so if she was older. HE will not be able to respond. The World will take her side regardless of the fact that despite appearances Taylor is not this doe eyed innocent. Not many 19 year olds would be willing to have a relationship with a man 30+ then come out and basically attack him in song..YET AGAIN. and what of her parent(s).

John can’t respond and that to me is a nasty little thing women do. And she seems to be a pro at that game. I think she has some problems. 3 relationships and according to her it is THEM… THEM… and not any part her. It takes 2 to make it and/or break it.

She did this whole thing with Kanye too.. Yes he was an ASS but she knows how to play that victim card to the hilt.. I see a pattern.

I don’t like her as much now.. I may be wrong to feel that way.. but there it is.. I see a Viper streak in this girl. Time will tell.

  51. April says:

I waited until I was 25 to fall for an older guy, he was 35. Can’t really say he broke my heart though. Disappointment comes to mind. The first cut is the deepest (Rod Stewart), that happened with the boyfriend in high school – the first love. I hope JM was not her first love, what a creep to have fallen for.

  52. Katt says:

She looks like Avril Lavigne in the bottom photo.

  53. Delphi says:

John Mayer is a manipulative, lecherous pig. He should be run out of town for messing with Taylor. I’m sure he knew she would write a song about him after he used her then ran. What a coward. What a twisted f-ck. No wonder he’s in hiding. haha He’d better hide. Those boys in Nashville don’t take kindly to some punk@ss bitch messing with their young, beautiful protégé. I’m guessing JM will be in hiding for a long while.

  54. Ruby says:

The writer of the people mag article didn’t say Swift was/has/had dating John. The writer impled ‘drama with Mayer’. Thats pretty vague and an assumption. They are basing their comment on an interview she gave- that no one would have to guess who she wrote the songs about. Now thats just poor journalism. But then again tabloids are written so even a 10-year-old can comprehend what has been written. These magazines have to sell print. Swift needs to sell her CD. I though Car Sales, Real Estate Agents, Lawyers and journalists were immoral, now I have PR under my list. I don’t think she even dated him. I think she had a major crush and he rejected her. She seems like a frivolous 20 year old. John even though he seems like a cad heis pretty intelligent and well read.

  55. happygirl says:

Hmmm..well, I love Taylor, and although yes, we all warned her not to date John Mayer, I can honestly say that sometimes I do things I want to do even if people tell me it’s not a good idea. Maybe she wanted to see what it was like to be with a “bad boy”…I mean, Joe JonASS was supposedly a “good boy” and look what a douche he was. I don’t think she’s half an a**hole as most 19 years I know, and if she wants to write songs about whomever, go for it. John’s written songs about people. Who cares? If you don’t like her or her music, there’s an off switch to the radio. All musicians draw their inspiration from something. And I highly doubt SHE called People magazine asking for the interview. At least she’s honest.

  56. mollination says:

Please, like we haven’t all gone ahead with a guy when we quote unquote “knew better”. That doesn’t make you an asshole. It makes you human. Sometimes your head wins out, other times your heart wins out. Show me a person who can 100% resist temptation.

  57. Caroline says:

Seriously what you said was harsh.you have to live your life to find out the lessons.like you said you were an a-hole when you were 19 so just grow up and stop hating.

  58. MyCatLoves TV says:

Hey, Taylor, call Carly Simon to see how this is done with style. You’re So Vain – 1972. Learn from the master, little girl.

  59. I believe Taylor is one of the only artists around today, that will still be writing great songs ten years from now.

  60. hjsplit says:

Good blog! I really love how it’s easy on my eyes as well as the data are well written. I am wondering how I could be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which should do the trick! Have a nice day!

  61. Sheebul says:

It sound like half of you are screwed in the head! I swear. If Mayer could pull the wool over the eyes of a woman in her 40’s (Aniston) what makes you think he didn’t do the same to a 19year YOUNG girl?!?! That young lady SHOULD have listened to her elders & everyone else who begged her to RUN but a guy like that, how simple & easy a task it would have been to sepperate her from her under-clothes & then break her heart…. Like taking candy from a baby… That’s how easy. SHAME ON HIM!!!!
