Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s wedding is happening this weekend in India. It seems like it’s very sudden, but it’s been in the works for a while, with Katy joking this spring that Russell was planning everything and had turned into a “Bridezilla.” They have either four or six days of festivities planned (reports vary) for their 75 guests, who are being flown in for their wedding this Saturday at a palace in the state of Rajasthan, India. Guests are staying at a luxury wildlife resort and several hotels nearby. US Weekly has some details in their print edition, and the Indian press has more.
Sources tell US Brand will ride into his ceremony on a horse, flanked by camels and elephants, during the processional at a palace in Rajasthan, India, where he proposed last New Year’s Eve. And Perry, for her part, will have a rotating bridal wardrobe from designers including Zuhair Murad and Donna Mizani. Needless to say, the Brands-to-be have spared no expense, flying nearly 75 guests in for the six-day extravaganza, which will feature folk dancers and fireworks. “It’s costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars,” the insider says. – US Magazine, print edition, November 1, 2010

It was all for international celebrity couple Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s big fat wedding.Sources said that Katy Perry and Russell Brand have arrived Rathambore for their much-awaited wedding this weekend, October 23. Several hotels in Rathambore have been booked for the guests, who are expected to come for the wedding ceremony. US has pictures of the resort in their magazine, and you can see some more below. According to the resort’s website (which I’m not naming but it’s easy enough to find) they have 10 luxury tents that cost around $875 a night. It sounds like a very lavish expensive wedding that will be a ton of fun. I’m looking forward to seeing the inevitable photos, the sale of which will undoubtedly help defray some of the costs.
I wrote all that up when I noticed that Katy tweeted that she was hoping for privacy for her wedding. She wrote “Greatest gift u can give us is respect & ♥ during this private X. No use wasting ur X w/ STOLEN or FALSE info. Thnku for this.” I’ve redacted the name of one of the resorts where they’re staying and have not included the name of the rumored palace where they’ll be married, but I’m not going to scrap this whole story at this point. Does that mean Katy isn’t going to sell the pictures? Because I’m betting she will.

@Maya: Would their wedding be more palatable to you if it were being held in NYC? They have a lot of money to spend and they’d spend it whether they were getting married in India or in Hollywood.
I see your point (and generally agree) but also want to point out that their wedding is bringing lots of money into the local economy.
From what little I (personally) know of Katy Perry & Russell Brand, they actually seem to be somewhat socially conscious and generally charitable. Let’s save some of the venom and hostility for those celebrities who really deserve it…

Ni, I don’t care where it is, it just seems a little cruel to rub this in the face of people who are starving. I guess that the people there who ears $1 an hour should be thrilled that these two idiots are throwing some of the crumbs off of their plate to them.
And I’m sorry, socially conscious people, especially Christians like she claims to, should not be able to, in good conscious blow hundreds of thousands of dollars on stupid details like riding an elephant or a yak or whatever when there are way to many ways that money could be better used. This is like Slutty Miller going to the Congo on a “mercy mission” and blogging about how good the food is. They can spend their money the way they want, but admiring them for it is insane.

No one knows whether they’re making donations to the nearby regions or how much this wedding will help benefit the local economy. I imagine tourism to India has been elevated by Perry and Brand for quite some time… could be wrong, though. I agree that elephants and camels are lavish (and as an animal rights activist I hope they’re using a reputable source for the creatures, one that doesn’t exploit them or mistreat them)… but it’s their WEDDING DAY. Maybe this has lost meaning in Hollywood, but it’s still one of the most important days of their lives, and none of us have any room to judge how or where they spend it.
@ Freeverse: The security means more jobs for more people… never a bad thing. I don’t think they’ll be protecting the wedding party from locals, but from the hordes of paparazzi who are sure to swarm in now that details of the resorts have been leaked by other publications.

I agree with this actually being a good thing for the people of India. They will be glad to get paid for use of their elephants, ect. And it will likely attract more tourisum for them.

Though I have my doubts this huge wedding in India is happening, I think they’ll end up getting married by her dad in some backyard ceremony.

Someone else was obviously rubbing luxury and lavish treatment in the face of the poor before Katy and Russell decided to get married there! And more than likely it was some rich Indian family…or does that make it ok since they aren’t celebrities!?

Wow, kind of surprised to read that some people think of India only as a slum. India has a upper class that has substantial wealth. The five star resorts aren’t just for rich tourists. By having their wedding in India it helps the Indian economy.
America has a massive homeless population and poverty is rising, no-one mentions that whenever celebrities and politicians raise and spend huge amounts of money on nothing.

My husband is from Ecuador and when we go there to travel we stay in nicer hotels than anything we could afford in the US, eat out, take cabs and are always sure to tip generously to the staff, waiters, taxi drivers. Your tourism and generosity actually really is one of the best ways to get money directly into the hands of the locals.

I agree, though, with everyone saying WTF on the vulgar displays of wealth in an area with a rampant amount of poverty. India has an upper class, but I don’t recall seeing anything like “Slumdog Millionaire” or “Born into Brothels” in the US. The wealth seems pretty disproportioned. People like this just have no idea about the real world. No, they don’t have to spend their money like I do, but I have the perfect right to have NO respect for them.

@Nancy…if you want elephants and tents at your wedding it says you want to create a memorable day for yourself and your loved ones! Granted my wedding didn’t cost anywhere near what they’re spending, but guess what…it involved tents AND it involved animals including elephants because we got married in a fabulous area of our state zoo! Not only that but a good friend did the same thing this past August – married at a zoo and had the elephants come out to greet guests during cocktail hour.
You don’t have to have respect for people who do things differently than you, but don’t need to make statements that infer having a lavish or non-standard ‘church and country club reception’ wedding means something is wrong with the relationship! My husband and I are very happily married despite having tents and animals at our wedding.

It’s not the same thing, and you know it. Still, zoos are pretty evil. Some are better than others, but they all involve imprisoning animals against their natural insticts. Elephants are intelligent, herd animals with familial ties that migrate miles every day. Zoos are totally contrary to their nature. It might have been a great day for you, but not for them.
And I am sure I can comment about anything I want. And I still say that two people who truly love each other could get married under a rock and count themselves lucky. I had a few friends in my backyard at my wedding. Whole thing cost less than $350. Best marriage ever. I agree with everyone who says all this tawdry blah blah will count for squat when they divorce in 18 months.

Does anyone know how much these two give to charity? I really don’t, but it is worth a thought. Celebrities often spend lavishly on themselves, but it is also very often the same mega-wealthy that donate very heavily to charity. I think if you spend as much on other people as yourself, you aren’t really doing a bad thing. (Not to say that living that lavishly is necessary or even to be desired.)
Also, @Nancy, you don’t seem like a very nice person and I’m glad your wedding sounds like it was pretty crappy. Jealousy is not an attractive look for anybody.

How nice for the fabulous folks that they have had a LUCKY enough life to blow the money that might have saved them on tents and elephants. How about the thousands of animals that are killed every day because there are not enough resources to keep them alive. Oh well, sucks for them. But these two idiots had a great great day.

However, I am with Nancy regarding the stupidity of riding an elephant to a wedding. Everybody knows how elephants are “trained” with violence and cruelty. I really don’t respect people for financially supporting cruelty.
