Kanye West calls interrupting Taylor Swift at the VMAs ‘selfless’

The more Kanye talks, the bigger hole the guy digs for himself. Kanye has already apologized for interrupting Taylor Swift’s moment at the VMAs last year, he performed at this year’s ceremony, and he’s explained that he spent several months overseas and had to let some of his staff go as the result of the fallout from that incident. The subject is still being brought up in interviews, and Kanye, true to form, isn’t sticking to his talking points or even repeating the same sentiments about how he’s sorry. In a recent interview, Kanye called his cognac-fueled moment “selfless” in that he was defending another artist’s work. Give me a break! This isn’t entirely out of left field from Kanye. He told Access Hollywood last month that he’ll “jump in front of a moving car for history,” in regards to all the artists that are under-appreciated at awards time. It’s like he thinks he’s the only one qualified to be the arbiter of taste in his industry and that he’s doing the entire world a service.

Despite his repeated apologies for crashing Taylor Swift’s stage during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West sounded unapologetic in a new interview during which the hip hop hitmaker dubbed his actions that night “selfless,” claiming that he bore the brunt of criticism in standing up for a fellow artist.

West told Minnesota radio station KDWB: “It’s like, what’s so arrogant about that moment? If anything, it’s selfless.

“I’m walking around now with half an arm, trying to sell albums and having to walk in rooms and be afraid of my food getting spat in, like people going ‘I lost all total respect for you,’ and nobody wants to just sit and look at the reality,” West said.

Last year, West hijacked the stage during Swift’s VMA acceptance speech, protesting her win for the best video award for You Belong With Me, which he felt should have gone to Beyonce Knowles for Single Ladies. He said at the time: “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyonce has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”

West built upon those sentiments in his KDWB interview, again saying the Single Ladies video was slighted at the VMAs.

“The audacity of it losing anything … I guarantee if it was the other way around, and Taylor Swift was 15, 12, 15 years into the game, and on her 40th video or 50th video, and she made the video of her career, do you thing she would have lost to a brand new artist? Hell no!” West said.

“I’m not pandering to sell anymore records to get people to like me more — I would like people to like me because I’m likeable.”

In related news, Kanye performed some a capella rapping on the loudspeaker during a flight from Minneapolis to New York last week. Hollywood Life has the story and a video. I’m sure he thought that was selfless too despite all the people who had no idea who he was and were annoyed that he woke them up. This guy will not change, but people will definitely pay less attention to his antics.

  3. khaveman says:

Is he STILL talking about that? That was moons ago. Move on.

  4. Rita says:

He merely misspoke, the word he was looking for was not selfless, it was selfish and yes, keeping your name in the biz because of it is also selfish.

  5. Me1st says:

loser, noone likes you because it wasn’t even your song you were defending. It was someone who has grace and style, something you do not!!

  6. Gabriela says:

I had to double check my calendar to make sure it’s not a year ago.

  7. happygirl says:

    @womanfromthenorth…LMAO!!

  8. Marjalane says:

I’m sick of him and Taylor Swift- Kanye’s big mouth is beginning to make Diddy look demure.

  9. Tess says:

That incident would never have occurred if Kanye West had learned, or been taught, basic good manners.

  10. Skins says:

So sick of these non-talents calling themselves “artists”

  11. Jackson says:

I’m really not sure why anyone still pays attention to him.

  12. Rachel says:

Meh, he’s an ass, but at least he’s an entertaining ass. This is more than I can say for the majority of people in the entertainment industry.

  13. devilgirl says:

Kanye did Swifty a favor, she should be thanking him for all the publicity and sympathy it has garnered her.

Didn’t this happen 12-14 months ago? How much mileage can they still try to squeeze out of a non-event?

  14. alejandro says:

Team Kanye, Swift can kick rocks. At least he’s honest about his goals and doesn’t hide behind an a label created image like she does.

  15. bubbles says:

Jesus f…. Christ. can he please deeply offend somebody else now and move on to a new topic. at this point I think he is better off talking about his diamond teefs, ’cause this is oooooooooooold news. again.

  16. Lisa Turtle says:

Whose reality is he referring to? Because to the rest of the world, Kanye is living on planet narcissist.

  17. Hollowdoll says:

He is so self centered! Doesn’t he know at this point he is only the punchline to a bad joke.

  18. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I don’t agree with what Kanye did but I agree with why he did it. Taylor Swift winning over Beyonce that year was a joke…A JOKE…but Kanye should have bitched about it on the ride home, in his defense he was drunk as a skunk.

  19. bellaluna says:

Oh please, oh please, oh PLEASE let it be a fast-moving SUV when he does jump. (Mean, I know, but I’ve had the flu for 3 days and I’m all out of “nice.”)

  20. Obvious says:

I LOVED the You Belong with Me Video is was adorable and refreshing. I HATED Beyonce’s video-in fact I just hate Beyonce. I loved Destiny’s Child bu B rubs me the wrong way be herself. She like Kanye are like Goopy. They are too good for us peasants.

Besides Beyonce won BEST VIDEO OF THE YEAR. who cares who won best female video???

  21. Atticus says:

@Obvious – helloooooooooooo totally agree with you. Beyonce went on to win best video of the YEAR. She wasn’t shut out or slighted at the VMAs.

@Gabriela – ha, that made me laugh..so true.

  22. Cruisin Through says:

    @LoveAngelina-

Do you think being drunk is a defense? Did someone pour the booze down him? He’s a grown man and acted like a total dick and is now trying to justify it.

No one will EVER be in 100% agreement on who should win. He should have kept his drunk ass in his seat.

  23. Boombeeba says:

If anyone of u believe that this wasn’t a staged event, u remain a zombie. It was a plan, if u can’t tell by beyonce’s bad acting in her “reaction” & Taylor swift horrendous acting u have all been duped. Kanye & Taylor are in the same management group, this was a ploy to “initiate”” her into a certain cabal of “entertainers” who are a part of a certain group/ cult . I wont Elaborate anymore. Do Ur Own Research. This was à totally Staged Event. I suggest doing Ur Research in Youtube if u don’t beleive me. No whacko conspiracies here.open your eyes

  24. Obvious says:

@boombeeba I think the UFO conspiracy theorists want their leader back.

  25. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Crusin Through, I don’t think being drunk should be a defense for EVERY bad thing someone does but in his case, he is very sensitive about recognition and awards as it is and the drink didn’t help him any but I think he would have stayed in his sit if he hadn’t been drinking, I think after the show or on his blog he would have bitched and moaned but he would have still sat down and not gotten up had he not been drinking.

  26. Str8Shooter says:

Love his music, but what a freakin’ DOUCHE! So, because HE thinks someone else should have won, that gives him the right to perform a ‘selfless’ act and humiliate the winner?

What an a-hole. And as for miss Big Booty, music BLOWS. Always has, always will!

  27. connie says:

does anyone remember when gretchen wilson won (can’t remember which award and too lazy to look it up) and he acted like a total ass?

“It’s like he thinks he’s the only one qualified to be the arbiter of taste in his industry and that he’s doing the entire world a service. “- totally hit the nail on the head.
he just needs to get over himself already

  28. jover says:

Disagree with your cult theory boombeba but I wouldn’t doubt that it was staged, they are all fame whores whose music can’t stand on its own. Is anyone else tired of swifty warbling through select live performances these last several weeks to promote her cd. Bouncy’s reaction at that event was odd, but she is such a manufactured automaton she’s incapable of a real unscripted human reaction, but I wouldn’t be surprised if all three staged it for pr purposes.

  29. SoulLovah says:

No matter what, I can’t deny how I love Kanye’s music. He really is somewhat of a musical genius in hip hop. Really.

On the other hand, I’ve noticed that he gets so offended at award shows when things don’t go as he predicted. I know awards are tangible proof of your success and hard work, but I just feel like musicians should be satisfied being able to reach and connect with an audience, share their message, express themselves. I understand how it would suck to be overlooked time and time again when you work your butt off and never get any recognition, but both Kanye and Beyonce have been recognized with freakin GRAMMYS and other honors, waaaaay more important than a lil ole VMAs, so I really don’t get his lil obsessive compulsiveness about award shows.

besides that, team kanye all day!

  30. Cruisin Through says:

@LoveAngelina. I agree that he probably wouldn’t have gone on stage if he was sober. I just don’t think it justifies it, is where we differ. I guess my personal bias is where people get excused for piss poor behaviour because they are famous or “sensitive” I don’t think Taylor Swift is the huge talent she was seen to be, but who is Kanye to question that? Really trying to see your side but still think he was just a dick, drunk or not. It irritate me even further that after apologizing and crying all over every talk show that would listen to his pathetic ass, he is now acting like some kind of hero.

  31. Az says:

Oh my God this douche needs to shut the hell up and go away.

  32. Anti-icon says:

Kanye is a blowhard. He needs to produce his so-called “genius art.” And then throw that mess up here for us to “award.”

Kanye needs to familiarize himself with a whole new art form: the self-aggrandizing police within. It is a silent endeavor. And also lengthy.

  33. Kim says:

Kanye is an uneducated idiot. He isnt likeable because he is a moron.

He does/says this stuff on purpose to create press for himself because he doesnt have the talent to warrant anyone giving a rats behind about him.

  34. angel martin says:

He is a textbook narcissist, and he was extremely rude and obnoxious for what he did to Taylor–but he was right about the video thing. That Taylor Swift video was cheeeeeeeeeese, boring, lame.

  35. Kay says:

    Move on FFS.

  36. Lia says:

He always looks like a dumbshit in every picture I’ve seen of him, and when he opens his mouth he removes all doubt.

  37. Jaxx says:

If you have to tell people that you are likeable, you aren’t.

This isn’t the first time he’s hijacked the stage for his own agenda. Remember the look on Mike Myers face when Kanye blurted out that Bush doesn’t like black people during the Katrina fund raiser? He is the biggest narcissist I’ve ever seen.

  38. SixxKitty says:

He is like laxatives, effective at moving $hit…cretin

  39. LT says:

I like Kanye’s “music” (mostly), but he is the biggest narcissist and most arrogant douche I’ve ever seen! He would totally wear two polos w/ popped collars at the same time.

  40. Jaye E says:

Oh Kanye. Every time I think I’m ready to like you…you open your mouth and speak.

  41. Angel says:

Whatevs. He makes a damn good point about the roles being reversed and I find him oddly endearing anyway–likable, even. Good for him, actually, for owning up to what he said/did. I was kind of disappointed when he was acting all ‘reformed’ there for a bit and it was obvious his label was pressuring him to for sales. Dude just said the damn truth, albeit he could have waited until Taylor was done having ‘her moment’ but he didn’t, so…; deal with it, whiny privileged white people.

Beyonce DID deserve to win that award. Sometimes when you blatantly slight someone they’re gonna point it out … or someone else will for them.

    Boohoo.
