Gwyneth Paltrow performed Country Strong at the CMA awards last night and I have to say that she did a great job. I’ve never seen that film she did with Huey Lewis, Duets, but I’ve heard she can sing and she proved it. Kaiser pointed out to me that Gwyneth looked nervous, although I didn’t really notice it, and that she wasn’t really playing that guitar and was just using it as a prop. She must have a lot of practice doing that for her role as an alcoholic country star. It was hard to buy those lyrics coming from such a sanctimonious woman of privilege, but I’m sure most people don’t have as negative and long-standing an opinion of her as I do. It’s a catchy song though, and one I can see becoming a minor hit. Country music executives seem to agree with me, because E! Online reports that labels are eager to sign Goopy to some kind of record deal, and that she’s already received offers. I’m sure her husband is thrilled.

Record labels have come calling. “She’s been approached,” says one source.

Not only does the Oscar winner plays a former country music star trying to revive her career in the upcoming flick Country Strong, she also performs live tonight on the Country Music Awards.

One music executive says it appears her team is putting something into place. “They debuted the [Country Strong] song this summer and have just gone to country radio,” the exec said. “This is almost three months prior to the movie coming out and she is performing on the CMAs.

“It is risky to go to country radio that much before the film. If they reject her, then the movie is DOA.”

A source close to Gwynnie says, “She would never say never, but it’s not something she is yet seriously considering.”

Paltrow appears on four songs on the movie’s soundtrack, which also features big-time country stars Faith Hill, Hank Williams Jr., Trace Adkins and Lee Ann Womack, among others. And one of our favorites, Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum is among the songwriters.

“They have surrounded her with beloved country people,” the music exec says, “so not only will they accept her, but she can have more of a career in that world.”

And then of course, she’s married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and she appears—singing and dancing—on next week’s episode of Glee. As Jane Lynch recently told us, “She’s a quadruple threat. We knew she could act, we knew she was gorgeous, but she sings and dances amazingly well, too!”

[From E! Online]

Remember when Madonna started directing and how her marriage to then-husband, director Guy Ritchie, failed shortly afterwards? I’m just saying that maybe it’s not the best idea for Gwynnie to go into the same field as her husband, as moderately talented and in need of a career focus as she may be.

Minor spoilers for next week’s Glee
I was under the impression that Gwyenth was going to be on Glee this week, but she doesn’t appear until next week. (This week’s episode was excellent by the way, and I loved their focus on gay bullying and fitting in.) Glee creator Ryan Murphy lets us know that Gwyneth will do a mashup of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and “Singing in the Rain.” (Along with that “F You” song we’ve already heard about.) He praised her professionalism, and said that she spent over 12 hours stomping around in a tank of water to film her dance number. Maybe my opinion of this woman will change once I see her on Glee. It’s hard, though, when her scamming trainer still gets press for bragging about all the weight she helped Gwyneth lose after her latest role. It’s only a matter of time before Goop is spouting off about it again too.

  1. Rita says:

Her red carpet dress is soooo country clasic and looks the fashion envy of any square dance and ho-down (ho-down?)

  2. annaloo says:

That is the Goopy “I-Hafta-PEE” dance looks like…

was she really playing that guitar? I think she forgot to change chords when the song did…

  3. LisaMarie says:

Oh wow, at first I was all like “that dress is cute!” and then I scrolled down. NOT cute.

EDIT: The dip-dyed cutout one, not the performance dress.

  4. flutters says:

Gwyneth definitely didn’t embarrass herself at the CMAs. Live singing and she was solid. Better than Taylor Swift, not as good as Miranda Lambert and Carie Underwood. She was blinking like crazy so she was definitely nervous.

She needs to not belt though, she sounded better on the verses.

  5. whitedaisy says:

    Pretty underwhelming.

Anyone else notice the long-haired blonde in the sleeveless black minidress in the dark of the stage way off to the left? I imagine that she is the one actually playing the guitar at the intro, but it is hilarious that she is Paltrow’s doppelganger. (Probably why she is in the dark, and off to the nether regions of the stage.)

  6. devilgirl says:

I think she sounded better then a lot of pros out there. She beats Taylor Swifts singing by a mile.

I don’t have the hate for this woman that everyone else does. I like some of her movies, and she can look very pretty at times.

  7. jessica says:

LOL.. I thought the same thing Lisa Marie!! LOL

  8. Dorothy#1 says:

Actually I am a music teacher and she was out of tune at least twice. Sorry I just really do hate her!

On a positive note, I kinda like her dress. 🙂

  9. annaloo says:

And is that Austin Scarlett’s material from Project Runway Season 2?

I kid, Goop! Good job, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert don’t need to be worried.

  10. Mia Girl says:

She sang fine, was kinda boring… I think that singing country is also like being a rapper… there has to be a degree of authenticity to your work for it to be good. Most of the songs are about a type of life, a point of view and so I just could not get around tha fact that G could not possiblity relate AT ALL nor could I connect her to what she was singing about.
So I found it kind of condescending and if I was Mirada whatever, I would done exactly what she did, throw her the stink eye.

  11. gabs says:

She sounds really good. WAY better than Taylor Swift does. She looks beautiful HOWEVER, the dress might be too revealing for the country crowd. They might hold that slit against her. I honestly dont think she would record a country album. I mean, sure she sounds great BUT she doesnt seem to have a passion for it and wouldnt go on tour.

Maybe she wants to be an EGOT?

  12. annaloo says:

OMG, upon second watching…. the real performer is the Gwyneth doppelganger in the BG…

  13. guesty says:

actually liked it. so kudos to her even tho the guitar thing was a no.

    & lady antebellum…so love them.

  14. LOVE ANGELINA says:

OMG She is wearing a pageant dress, GWAD these country music award redcarpets are total fashion eye sores. Her performance dress was nice though.

I gotta say Gwen didn’t sound half bad when she started and then they got in to the chorus and it was not so great when that guy joined in but I hate country music. However Gwen doesn’t sound bad and I am sure her husband gave her some great advice. Bitch is pushing for an Oscar nod hard.

  15. lisa says:

I saw this on another site..and have to say.. she does look like Claire Danes.. not sure if that is good or bad..

She really is working her ass off promoting this film.

I know she needs a hit so time will tell. Wonder if the Country audiences will see this.. She seems to promoting it towards that audience. Not a fan of hers so I don’t plan on seeing it.

  16. aenflex says:

hate all you want. i love her. not even her personality, but the people she has played. she’s a great actress. and she has great legs.

  17. cee says:

Don’t like her snobbish attitude. Is she really married and does she really have kids? She does have an okay voice. So expect Aniston to do a singing movie next.

  18. bros says:

    i cant help loving gwenyth!

she has a good voice and definitely puts that strawberry shortcake precious thing taylor swift to shame. her other Bette Davis eyes is actually a good song and I have it from long ago. she looks damn good, but i think the cut out on the dress was too much. it would have been really nice without it. instead, she looked like she was channeling blake lively.

  19. Scarlet Vixen says:

I thought she did pretty well. Is she a Faith Hill or something (sorry, not really a fan of country music!)? Nah. But she can carry a tune. She did look very nervous, and I think the guitar was a prop to help her feel comfortable–I know alot of musicians/singers (myself being one of them!) who like having that security blanket. And, like others have said, she puts Taylor Swift to shame–that girl can’t sing her way out of a wet paper bag. I’m embarassed for her everytime I hear her live.

  20. I Choose Me says:

Are you going to cover the CMA’s red carpet fashion Kaiser? I’d love it if you would. I look forward to your fashion caption snark.

  21. Yum says:

She sounded great and agree that she puts some of the other country singers to shame. I liked both dresses, too. Love me some Goopy, she was the ‘IT’ girl of my college days. Don’t hate, appreciate!

  22. janie says:

she is pushing so hard for oscar, going the reese witherspoon june cash route. also, keeps blabbing about gaining 20 pounds. she does not look any different in the film, but good way to get oscar.

  23. Heavenbound says:

I actually was pleasantly surprised. She does have a good voice. And, I have always liked her. I also do not understand all the hate for her.

  24. Louwho says:

I think she was fantastic, and I love how at the end that chick who won the Female Artist of the Year (blonde in the white dress) looks kinda sour-faced and jealous. I think a lot of those singers were- she has an Oscar, hot legs, and sounds better live than a lot of them. I’m sure it stings.

  25. Po says:

Ok so this is the deal, I think celebrities really shoot themselves in the foot by doing so many interviews and talking so much. I won’t watch the clip and I won’t go see the movie because I find her interviews and general life to be so annoying. If I watch her onscreen I will probably be annoyed so I won’t watch and that is her fault. Stop doing 15 to 20 interviews everytime you have a movie coming out. Gwyneth Paltrow is probably not the most annoying celebrity that has ever lived but if she would just stop trying to sell us on her “lifestyle” maybe some of us wouldn’t think she is. Ok, end of rant.

  26. Sophie says:

    the hell is she wearing?!?

  27. Lauren says:

Goop sounds rather amazing…Chris must be proud of her. People hate GP because of all her DNA inherited talent and beauty. BTW, she has already won an Oscar – when she was 25. Blythe Danner, GP’s mom is even more magnificent than GP..and much more likeable.

  28. devilgirl says:

It isn’t the actors that want to do the interviews, part of your contract, when doing a movie, is to promote the hell out of that movie. Simple as that. Some actors, granted, do not always do the “interview” thing, but most actors do. It is part of the process of selling a movie.

  29. Louwho says:

You certainly can’t fault actors for doing interviews and promoting the films they’re in – it’s part of their contract, like Devil Girl says.

  30. Cat Burrito says:

Was really nice to see her break a sweat on her upper lip. Vince Gill was a wonderful distraction. But the glisten on her upper lip was fabulous.

  31. Po says:

Devilgirl, I don’t think the interview thing is that simple. I think it has to do with your talent, your need for attention, how strong you are in contract negotions and so on. I don’t think it is necessary for me to know what country Gwyneth prefers in interviews and I don’t think her newsletter has anything to do with her promotion of a movie. That is just my opinion.

  32. malachais says:

She seemed so out of place, personally I think its kind of annoying to see all of this high fashion at the CMA’s. IMO, I think the country audience finds this unrelatable, look at Leann Rimes career.

  33. The_Porscha says:

She did a much better job than I wanted her to, I’ll admit that. A pretty solid performance, and only pitchy when she tried to belt, which is a cultivated skill that she can’t really be faulted for not having. It also may have been nerves.

But, for real, look closely: she was not actually playing the guitar (very much a Milli Vanilli with strings situation going on down there). But they could have made her do it for the continuity of her character in the movie, OR because guitars are good vessels for containing nerves. A lot of musicians feel better with something “blocking” them from the audience, and the guitar might’ve helped her calm down a bit.

Also, I love the leaf drop earrings she wore on the red carpet.

  34. janie says:

only reason she won an oscar is bc she showed her boobs

  35. Green Is Good says:

    Nice “Eff-You” dress, Goopy.

  36. Lisa S. says:

Yes Janie, because everyone that shows their breasts in movies get Oscars. She did great live, especially with this not being her specialty career wise.

  37. Louwho says:

Lisa S, you are fabulous. LMAO.

  38. Lisa S. says:

    Thanks Louwho! 😉

  39. janie says:

wasn’t because of her acting. maybe she does have academy potential, but that role did not merit an oscar.

  40. Cleo says:

She reminds me of Meredith Monroe.

  41. Lisa Turtle says:

    gorgeous!

  42. di butler says:

Oh please. She sorta didn’t suck. That’s not validation for her to go to a venue that she doesn’t fit into to promote her crap movie. Poor Vince Gill. CUNTry Strong, indeed.

  43. danielle says:

She didn’t sound bad. Like the dress she wore when she performed.

  44. Michelle says:

Being able to carry a tune doesn’t mean you’re a singer! She has no emotion or personality coming through in her singing. That’s why it’s kind of forgetable. Meryl Streep can belt out a song with more passion than that and Bette Midler would sing circles around Gwen.

  45. daisy424 says:

Rapid eye blinking usually = nervous.

    That said, Well Done.

  46. BReed says:

She NAILED it last night at the CMA’s. I was THERE…it was SPECTACULAR. Lots of jealous people commenting today. Pretty pathetic.

  47. lisa says:

    Okay.

I need to say this, as a musician.

She has a great voice. She didn’t give a great performance; you could tell she was scared shitless (she went straight to the CMAs in a quick minute? That rarely happens.) but despite her jitters her voice was strong, clear, and pleasant to listen to.

You guys need to stop for a moment and just listen. Close your eyes, forget what a person looks like, or what the tabloid magazines say about them, and just listen. Because that’s what music is about. Gwyneth is a newbie when it comes to vocal performance, so she was weak when it came to being emotionally present (in fact, I think she was holding back tears many times)…she needs to learn how to channel her emotion into her singing voice. But everything else is there. Perhaps she wouldn’t even sing country if it were her choice.

Just…with all the auto-tuned, lingerie wearing “singers” out there, it’s refreshing to see someone just get out there and let it all hang out, for better or worse.

  48. Sara says:

Song is a little boring, but she sounded good. I think she is beautiful, looks better now than she ever has imo.

  49. observer says:

Her singing was mediocre, but then I knew it would be. She can’t even enunciate as well as the real country singers when she sings, and I couldn’t understand half of her lyrics. Also, her guitar was an acoustic guitar, and there was no mic in front of or anywhere near it, so her guitar playing was essentially air guitar and just for show.

  50. lisa says:

    OK.. different lisa here.

I don’t like her and that is the way it is.. It makes me sad because I loved her in Emma and will always..

I just think after she married Chris (whom she is never with it seems) she got all snotty and unapproachable. I just don’t connect with her at all..

  51. Wif says:

My audio’s off, so I can’t hear the song right now, but I just want to say that her botox is really distracting in these photos.

  52. skibunny says:

I usually dont watch this sort of thing but did because I wanted to see if she could pull it off. Wow! She did a great job and yes she looked nervous but also smokin hot!!!! Brad Pitt must have regrets that he let this one get away. But then again I think it was her that broke it off with him. She may not be the best singer but I do think she’s a great actress and kudos to her for going outside her comfort zone.

  53. observer says:

Maybe it’s the horribly fake country accent she does when she sings that makes it so hard to understand her. I grew up around country accents and understand them perfectly, so it’s not that I can’t understand a country accent. This girl cannot do a good accent to save her life. Her fake English accent in Shakespeare was atrocious, and now this embarrassingly fake country accent. I’ll pass on this movie based on the accent preview alone.

  54. Lola7 says:

She looks good trying to be something she’s NOT. *Blah*

  55. Kazoo81 says:

Po, I agree with you. There are some actors who give you TOO much of their personal crap in interviews, and then that inhibits the audience’s ability to believe them in different roles. like you said, it’s their faults. yes they have to do interviews to promote their work, but how much they choose to share is up to them.

ETA: I LOVE her legs. don’t like either dress she wore, but she doesn’t look horrible.

  56. lola lola says:

Is that a “stunt” guitar? It doesn’t look mic’d or plugged in so only the first row could hear it. I guess she needed a prop…

  57. original kate says:

i agree that goop has a nice voice, but i would rather listen to an “imperfect” singer who is full of emotion -billie holiday comes to mind- than someone who can hit all the notes just right and looks like a pretty pretty princess. goop’s life has been in this protective, privileged bubble, and that is just not interesting to me. and also? i’m from the south and that is one BAD southern accent.

  58. Leticia says:

Vince Gill looks terrible now! Hehe, that’s what he gets for being a big cheater and leaving his wife and daughter for fellow cheater Amy Grant.

Paltrow looks beautiful and has a great voice. I wish they would have given her a better song, though.

  59. Jeri says:

I was once a big fan when she was new to film and dating Brad but she has rubbed my nose in it too many times.

She’s her own worst enemy (like LeeAnn), she may not twitter but between her show and her statements she has made it clear she sees herself as better than 99% of people.

I haven’t heard this yet (DVR’d it & no sound at work) but I remember she sounded alright in that Huey Lewis movie. Not sure if she has room in her life for another career.

  60. Just a Poster says:

I missed it last night and just saw the clip. I think she did a pretty good job. Good on you Goop!

  61. liz says:

She has a good voice. I’m annoyed by the song – “country strong?” – what does that even mean. Cheesy as hell. But she has a a good voice.

  62. Katie says:

Does anyone else think she looks like Kendra Wilkinson (minus the tits) in the first pic of her on the red carpet? I hate the cut out dress. I like the performance outfit. I don’t understand the point of the guitar when it does look like she wasn’t actually playing it. She did look nervous, and that actually makes me like her more than I did before. I like she sounded solid but not fantastic.

  63. Amy says:

I watched the show and I think she did a fantastic job singing in front of that crowd. She really is talented.Go Paltrow!

  64. The Bobster says:

The real country singers knew all about her anti-America quotes and you could see it in their faces.

  65. LolaBella says:

I was pleasantly surprised; she sounded pretty good.

    She has great legs.

  66. L says:

@observer I agree! Her singing voice is decent, but that faux put upon accent and country twang was AWFUL. And distracting.

Never liked this woman, still don’t. And don’t worry-the majority of country folks will remember her bad mouthing americans, and they don’t forget that stuff easily. (e.g. the dixie chicks)

  67. moocowhead says:

Oh come on, please put down the guitar, I hate when people use them as a prop, it is as bad as lip-synching to me. Learn to play, or put it the fuck down.

  68. annaloo says:

God, for all the yoga that girl did, her posture is SO BAD. She must have been hella nervous.

  69. vicky says:

She sounded fine, dresses were good (except for the cutout), and she looked better than usual. So, why do I still Not like her! I do love her husband.

  70. Liana says:

don’t like her, but she has raw musical talent. She’s, for the most part, untrained and needs to work on the emotional component, but her voice is clear and true. Damn it Goop, you made me defend you, you pretentious twat.

  71. Mel says:

Well done to her, I like the song. Lovely to see Vince, bless. We never get to see the country award shows in the UK sadly.

Any girl who likes her Guiness is alright in my book.

  72. Kim says:

She has been touting for years she is a great singer so i was very disappointed last night. Her voice is awful.

I was excited to hear her and she wasnt even mediocre in my opinion. I was looking forward to the movie also but if she sounds like this in the movie – forget it. Oh and lets point out she had MAJOR back up singing help last night and the backup singers blew her away. I ended up listening to him/them and wishing she would stop singing.

Slap in face to the truly talented ladies of country like Reba, etc.

It will get radio play, nominations, etc because her camp will make sure it does but she isnt a singer.

  73. Kim says:

BReed- just like beauty, talent is in eye of beholder. Those who didnt like it simply didnt like it. It doesnt mean they are jealous. I personally like Gwen but think she sucked last night. She should stick to acting.

  74. Bethany says:

Meh. I love, love, love Minnie Driver’s voice!

  75. truthzbetta says:

I can’t take this seriously, especially if she’s gonna go to the awards shows naked in her cheap stripper heels.

She used to drop her drawers and fake she was a Brit for awards and fame, now she’s at the Country Music Awards singing with a full on faux country twang? I guess she had to go show them to their faces no one from the South could be found for the role? That’s not rude at all.

So much for authenticity when pathological stealer of other’s hard won accents and identities will do.

If the trend continues, 4 years from now the ever more desperate old girl will show up at the BET awards in her thong ready to rap about her hard times doing yogalates. Grannie Gwinnie Yo yo-ga.

  76. DeE says:

Not that it matters, but I am African American and I can appreciate all talent and can even get with some country songs. I have always liked G.P. Very blessed to be pretty, have nice vocals, look good on and on.

  77. filthycute says:

    A standing ovation?

  78. Dorothy says:

don’t worry haters, I am sure you are plenty hated in this world. 😀
