Amy Winehouse stocks up on vodka & whisky; snubs Mandela photocall

Amy Winehouse blew off the photocall for Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday concert in London this weekend. And this was no small affair: Will Smith, Annie Lennox, and Brit singers Sugababes and Leona Lewis were among the dozens of big-named celebs that managed to show up.

Where was Winehouse? I know, the first thought was “Well the poor dear’s been in the hospital, fighting early emphysema and whatnot. Who knows if she’s up to it?” Nope, Amy was stocking up on some serious booze. Well, serious for most of us. It’s more like mother’s milk to her.

Amy Winehouse was spotted shopping for alcohol and sweets today instead of joining her pop contemporaries at a photocall for Friday’s Nelson Mandela concert.

Although the troubled star confirmed she will sing at Mandela’s 90th birthday concert – despite being diagnosed with early stages of emphysema – her snub will no doubt unsettle organisers and fans ahead of the highly-anticipated gig in London’s Hyde Park.

The 24-year-old was released from hospital on Monday after doctors confirmed she has scarring of the lungs which can cause emphysema, but it is treatable.

Despite pledging to honour her live commitments at both Glastonbury and the Mandela concert yesterday and spending an hour-and-a-half in rehearsals since leaving the London Clinic, Winehouse was a no-show today.

Instead she visited her husband Blake Fielder-Civil at London’s Pentonville Prison, before stopping off at an off licence for some Jack Daniels whisky and vodka and a packet of sweets.

[From the Daily Mail]

I’d place the odds of Amy Winehouse actually showing up to perform at 10,000 to one. And I’m guessing I’ll have no takers for that bet.

Amy Winehouse is really a do-it-yourselfer though, isn’t she? Most celebs would send an assistant or some random street urchin to buy their alcohol and fetch their drugs. But Winehouse knows how to keep it real. That means ignoring Nelson Mandela and visiting her jailbird husband, then going home to get soused before falling asleep with a needle still stuck in her vein.

You know, any sympathy I had for her is drying up very quickly. If getting crack lung isn’t enough to wake your ass up, then you’re gonna be dead pretty quickly. And blowing off Nelson Mandela? Yeah, real class act there.

  2. northwesterly says:

I think I’ll quit smoking now. The site of her has turned me off smokes, vodka+whiskey for life.

    Thanks Amy Winehouse!

I have a strong feeling this girl is going to die. God forbid it. But it will happen.

  4. Susan says:

I too fear that we’re going to wake up one morning to see on CNN that she has died. 🙁

  5. steph says:

Yes its sad, but I too don’t think she’ll be around much longer.

Hey, she has her priorities! Liquor, sweets and a visit to her jailbird hubby, Mr. Mandela will understand. Give Aqualung Winehouse a break, she’s quitting (or so her PR pimps tell us) her medicinal crack!

It’s sort of miraculous how far she’s fallen.
She looks sort of pretty in the Feb 2007 picture.

  8. Snowblood says:

Well – she’s cheating herself, like she knew she would.

I hope she doesn’t die, but I, too, get this awful sense she might not make it, like she’ll pull a Janis Joplin any day now.

  9. C says:

I still don’t understand why everyone makes such a big deal out of her singing. Am I the only one who realizes she’s a ripoff of Lauryn Hill? Except she’s white, so she comes off as “unique”. She’s a crackhead who doesn’t care about herself or her career. why should we?

Because you’re wallowing in the mud with us, C! Welcome to the Ninth Circle, baby.

C, be careful where you say that…. some Winehouse fan will have a conniption and call you a heretic….

  11. Nan says:

Whatever! Gonna say a prayer for her. If she beats this, she will be an inspiration for all of the far gone souls. She needs to beat this to prove to the world it can get done. God, please bless this little one.

I don’t know if she’s going to die, I hope not. I’ve known people on a reckless path for 15-20 years, that have just turned around and had babies and husband while me clean and somewhat sober remains single, mainly by choice, cause i fear commitment.

Just to say, anything can happen. My question is, how does she in her state of constant high, manage to maintain her beehive image. Even in her messiest photographs, I’ve only seen her once or twice without the beehive.

I think she hates her true self.

Aww, bless her Amy heart 🙂

    Dead Woman Walking.

  15. Codzilla says:

Yeah, blowing of Nelson Mandela is beyond shameful. But I’m sure in Amy’s crack-addled mind, he’s just another nag trying to get between her and the pipe.

Naomi has/had an extremely close relationship with Mandela. She refers to him as her grandfather, she’s been an ambassador for 46664 (his charity) for over a decade and was wearing the charity baseball cap when she was arrested for assault. Not acceptable behaviour and certainly not something he can condone. She let him down big time. Amy, on the other hand, has never hurt anyone other than herself.
