My primary gripe is that she’s friendly enough with Joe Francis to stay at his place repeatedly. The place may be luxurious, but it represents ill-gotten gains. At her age (and even a bit younger), you start to think of women in their late teens and early twenties (i.e., Joe’s victims) differently. They’re no longer contemporaries–I’ve noticed myself calling them “kids,” and feeling protective of them, even though I don’t have kids of my own. Yes Aniston has stayed at Joe Francis’s place before – has have many celebs, but she is not there in these pics, and has not been there in quite some time. The place in these pics is The One & Only Palmilla Resort and Spa in Cabo San Lucas (where she always stays in Cabo) – as another poster pointed out, Francis’s place is in Puerto Vallarta. Google it and you’ll find it to be a match based on the pics – along with the fact that the photo agency releasing these pics has mentioned her renting a villa there – something she wouldn’t need to do if she was at a residential property.
And while I’m sure she’s aware that paps are probably trying to get shots of her, judging by the terrible quality these were taken from miles away – meaning that she probably could not see them very well at all, and like others have pointed out, is simply going about her vacation, shots be damned. She looks like she is simply spreading out a towel in these pics, and got caught in this position. I suggest you look it up. Since December 2008 (the last couple of years as you mention) she has released 6 movies, all of which were profitable except the ONE you mentioned, Management – why am I not surprised?! Marley & Me and He’s Just Not That Into You were great successes, The Bounty Hunter was a modest success, and Love Happens and The Switch more than doubled their production budgets at the box office, so would have been minor successes by the time DVD and TV sales were included. The only so-called flop was Management, which you fail to mention was a low budgeted indie. That’s a pretty high rate of success for any actor/actresses in this day and age – and why Jennifer is considered so bankable.
And if TBH’s successes were all due to Butler, how come he never had the same success with Gamer? They were both leads, they did equal promotion and they both have fanbases that came out to support them.
As for your remark about her no longer making $8 million/picture – according to who? Reputable sites like Forbes have stated her salary for TBH as being this much, and nothing has come out yet from her three forthcoming pictures, two of which are bigger-budget studio pics where she is a lead. There is no reason to believe she is making any less for either of these at the moment. She is probably not making her full salary for Horrible Bosses, given she is playing a supporting role – something many A-list actors do in that situation.

For a film to be profitable it has to make at least double its production costs, plus its marketing and promotion costs, because half the box office revenue goes to the theater managers and half to the studio. “Switch” had a production budget of $19 million, cost around $15 million to market, and made $40 million. It may have barely broken even but that’s questionable. “Love Happens” cost $18 million to make, maybe another $20 million in marketing costs since it was very heavily promoted, and earned $36 million. I doubt the studio made a dime on that one. “Management” was an unmitigated disaster. “Bounty Hunter”, “HJINTY” and “Marley and Me” were all profitable, but not because she was the starring attraction. As for Butler, his films average $56 million in box office revenue whereas Aniston’s average
$47 million, so I’d say the bigger draw in TBH was him, not her.

@Cheyenne: Oh dear, you forgot to apply the Aniston accounting to AJ’s films. You know… double the production budget plus promotional expenses.
The Good Shepherd, which she made after MAMS made just shy of $100 million. Now, considering Matt Damon who was getting $25 million+ for films before and after that one and Robert DeNiro were in it, plus AJ, I would say it didn’t meet the exacting standards that you have laid out for Aniston.
A Mighty Heart…barely over it’s production budget… never mind it was an indy, because your Aniston standards mean that it doesn’t matter.
I don’t consider voice over for animation as actually acting, so I’m not going to include those.
Changeling, $113 million, barely double it’s $55 million production budget, nowhere near making money if you count what it costs to promote a film into Oscar contention.
Salt. Possibly broke even as it doubled the production budget of $110 million + probably enough for the promotional budget.

Thanks Canuck – the way some try to twist the numbers to suit their agenda depending on whether they like a star or not is ridiculous. I’m sure though your rationale will fall on deaf ears.
Cheyenne – there is info out there to support Aniston’s salary from both The Switch and The Bounty Hunter being $8 million. A little magazine by the name of Forbes.
And where are you getting your alleged marketing and promotion numbers for Aniston’s films? Those numbers rarely ever come out for any film, and I’ve never seen mention of them on any site, so I would be interested to know. Particularly since you list The Switch’s promotion as being so much when it was roundly known that it suffered from lack of promotion due to the studio sale.
Also, like Canuck I have to ask if you seriously think Aniston was simply lucky to have found herself in successful movies and tv due to the efforts of others? Because simply listing an actor/actress’s average opening as a reason is no evidence of this. Besides the fact that the genre of the film can be a big impact, what if these actors were simply in films made successful by their co-stars (to use your reasoning), which would then have falsely inflated their averages?
@Anon: Ballpark figure for marketing and promotion is anywhere from $15 — 40 mil. That includes TV commercials, billboards, newspaper advertisements, internet ads, etc. I remember “Love Happens” being VERY heavily promoted, lots of TV ads, internet ads out the wazoo, billboards all over the place, posters plastered all over the sides of the buses — that kind of marketing doesn’t come cheap. And the studio has to recoup that from the box office receipts, AFTER they split 50/50 with the theater managers.
@Canuck: Honey, if I had to choose between a great ass on the one hand, and Brad Pitt and his six kids on the other, I’d take Brad and the kids any day of the week.
Five years from now, at the outside, that great ass is going to look like a waffle iron, all flat and criss-crossed with cellulite. And then what’s she going to have left? I can see her now, desperately wiggling her flat, wrinkled ass at any camera in sight. Only no one is going to want to take a picture of it any more.

No, you can do just as much giving and loving as a single woman, even more so considering you don’t have a partner’s and children’s emotional needs to attend to. Canuck is right, even taking cheyenne’s average box office numbers for both (which are a lot closer according to box office mojo) Anniston is technically the more bankable star!
She costs a lot less than Jolie, so forgetting promo budgets, she makes the studio more profit per film. And without Kung Fu Panda (which Angie was in for maybe 5 seconds) it’s really no contest at all.
JA made $8M for Marley and Me in 2007 and she is still making $8M a film in 2010 for TBH. Whereas AJ’s salary for MMS was $10M up front, $15M+backend for Salt and reportedly $20M for The Tourist.JA makes the studios more money. JA can film 3 films a year and AJ film one a year and it evens out in terms on total annual income. Oh yeah lets not forget JA’s perfume line.

Why all the emotion for a woman who when faced with the most horrifying end to a marriage managed to face it with grace. She hasn’t hurt anyone or asked anything of any of you. You don’t like her acting…don’t go see her movies.

@Cheyenne: You seem to really be stretching on that promo budget argument. Face it, if they couldn’t or wouldn’t spend more than $18 million on making the film, how likely is it that they could or would spend $40 million on promoting it? Pretty much zero.
If it costs $500 million to make films that net $1.3 billion, and we apply your Aniston accounting standards, that means that the first billion is taken up by the old “twice the production budget” rule. That leaves $300 million for 6 films, from which we need to deduct the promotion budget. So, if you think a studio is going to spend $40 million on a JA film that only cost $18 million, don’t you think they will spend at least that much or more on an AJ film that cost $110 million to make? Because that only leaves $50 million per film for the promotion of each. And you just KNOW that Both Salt and the Changeling well exceeded that.
Oh Cheyenne, you poor thing! I’m sorry if your own logic failed you, but I haven’t ‘trotted out’ any numbers at all, you did all the legwork by yourself. And sadly you still haven’t actually disproved my point, which is that if their average gross is only a couple mil apart, and AJ makes double what JA makes, then Jennifer is technically the more bankable star.
I’m not going to bother adding up any numbers, I’m bored at work, but not nearly that bored or invested, but I will point out that taking the gross of their last 6 movies is ridiculous. If we only did that then Zoe Saldana is the biggest movie star around. We were talking about their average lifetime gross, and their reported salaries- which you yourself provided the numbers for.
They are both A list movie stars, and your disliking JA doesn’t change her bankability, even with a few recent stinkers under her belt.

And please don’t say, well, they would pick Aniston if it was a rom-com. All she can play is rom-coms. The studios would rather have a versatile actress than a one-trick pony.
Cheyenne’s point is that Aniston and Angelina may both do movies but are certainly not in the same class. Once you start winning awards and are nominated for roles you play, like it or not, it really does put you in another hemisphere. Furthermore, Aniston is still unable to carry ANY movie on her own( after many attempts) and EVERYONE knows this fact. This is what star power is about.

Angelina is a huge U.S. AND International Star and has been such for over 14 years. Jennifer got started much later in movies. While she has had some success in movies as a supporting actress, she has not been recognized for her work in film as much as she was recognized for her work on TV.

Pointing out that if the same standards are applied to both would make AJ a money-losing actress too isn’t attacking, unless you think that calling someone out on that sort of dishonesty is worse than actually being the one doing it.
Jolie has only been acting for 14 years and she certainly hasn’t been a huge international star for all of that time. The first of her films to get international distribution was in ’99. And her first honest to goodness international hit was MAMS, where the “triangle” story frenzy served the film well, as did Pitt’s status as an international star. If Pitt hadn’t been one himself, none of the foreign press would have bothered to print a thing about it and her name would not have become familiar abroad in the way it did.
In fact, I’m more than a little convinced that the reason they travel so much and spend so much time out of the US is to maintain interest in them abroad, since those are the numbers that push her B.O. results ahead of someone like Aniston. Aniston does well domestically, but doesn’t pull in the numbers abroad.

Eighty percent of the world’s population lives OUTSIDE the U.S.; ask ALL the other big stars/entertainers who have an international following– you want to pull in the numbers from BOTH sides. All mega entertainers know this (Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Sting, Oprah, the Beatles.) But you have to know HOW to pull in the draw of the international crowd, too. Some can and some cannot.
Angelina, Brad and Johnny Depp, to name a few, CAN. If their name is on something, it draws a huge crowd. It’s smart or smarter business. No one is saying that you cannot make money off of the U.S. crowd. At this point in time, the afore-mentioned people ARE mega watt stars today and have very little competition. When they show up at the red carpet, people are going bonkers. Have you seen ANY of the YouTube coverages of any of Brad/Angelina’s red carpet moments in the LAST 5-6 years? People go crazy!!! Even in the U.S. since her divorce, Aniston does NOT draw the same kind of reaction or the number of persons at her red carpet events.
You do not have to be a great actress to make money in film, and Aniston is proof of that. She is popular enough. Aniston does not have sequels under her name like Brad, Angie or Johnny Depp. Most industry experts and film critics find Aniston to be a mediocre actress at best.
If you think that Aniston is at the top of her game because she “makes the studios money,” that there is no room for improvement as an actress or at the box office, then so be it. Then all she needs to do is keep making 3-4 movies per year…and keep the body tight and tanned.
BTW, Angelina Jolie already had international status from the Lara Croft Tomb Raider franchise. If you ask anyone who is the bigger star in the U.S., they will say Angelina Jolie over Jennifer Aniston.
@Josephinea: Thank you for the little social studies lesson, but since I live outside of the US myself, I’m pretty much aware that the world doesn’t revolve around the USA and it’s population.
I was not disputing that she is an international star, I was disputing that she has been one for 14 years as you say. I also didn’t imply that having a strategy is a bad thing, as I’m the one who pointed it out in the first place.
I would also dispute that she was a big international star after Lara Croft, had that been the case for any demographic outside of the video game playing teen boy slice her next films would have done better. It’s easy to see that from the poor returns on her next two films, neither of which targeted that demographic, that she wasn’t pulling in other people.
Original Sin bombed despite having Banderas in it as well, his presence should have been a European sales guarantee. Life or Something Like It was her attempt at a rom-com and her first film where she was the only “star”. It also bombed, and only took in about 2 1/2 million in foreign receipts. You can argue all you like about when her status as an international star started, but if you look at the numbers it’s pretty obvious that MAMS and it’s surrounding media coverage was what really put her into the international public’s eye and made her name recognizable to the rest of the world.
Something else to chew over: both Jolie and Aniston’s films don’t tend to do well when they are targeted outside of their respective demographic groups. When Jolie does an action film and shoots people, it does well. When she does something else, not so much. When Aniston does a rom-com, it does well. When she does something else, not so much. When you are a woman, BOTH of those niches are age limited. If Aniston keeps up her body, she’s most certainly figured out that you need to look the part to get the roles.
One final comment: It’s not an easy thing to break out of the public’s perception of you when you have been playing a well loved character on a hit TV series for 10 years, whether it be in another TV show or a movie. Critics actually say that when Aniston does something outside of her comfort zone, she does a good job of it. That doesn’t mean that the public WANTS to see her playing something outside of their own mental comfort zone of what they think JA should be doing onscreen. I’m sure that like myself, you can think of a number of well loved actresses/actors from TV that disappeared after their show was done, because no one would accept them as a different character. Aniston has escaped that fate so she must be doing something right, even though it seems to annoy the Jolie fans that she’s still around. Aniston is after all, in the top 10 actresses who give the best return on investment dollar for dollar, and however much it looks to the public that the big expensive films are all that counts in the money game, it’s the less expensive ones that pay the bills.
