Halle Berry is an afro-tastic hot mess in the trailer for ‘Frankie & Alice’

A few weeks ago, Halle Berry got all dolled up in a pretty cream dress to attend a screening of Frankie & Alice, a film I didn’t know much about. When I was doing a little research on the film, I discovered how sketchy the plot was and is. Halle plays a character with two personalities – Frankie is a be-afro’d cage dancer with Pam Grier-circa-Foxy Brown styles. Alice is a prim, anal retentive Southern white lady who loves to crash weddings. For real. And people are now saying Halle could get another Oscar nomination…? Here’s the trailer:

My GOD, this looks like a total mess. Okay, some nice things: Halle looks pretty in it. And it’s always nice to see Stellan Skarsgard and Phylicia Rashad. And some of the costumes look okay. Now for the bad: this script seems to take the worst and most boring parts from every “multiple personalities” film character. And the whole thing looks terribly budget. And it seems like the director didn’t know if he was making a drama or a comedy (did anyone else giggle?). And who wouldn’t want Halle Berry to gate-crash their wedding?

Thanks to Gawker for the trailer!

Well I have to say I will be renting this one. She plays crazy well.

  2. gabs says:

umm.. I honestly dont think this is halles year for oscar #2 but she looks SO beautiful in the trailer. She should have an afro all the time. Gorgeous. Like you said, great to see phylicia rashad and stellan skarsgard. Its a good cast. Who knows?

  3. hatsumomo says:

I think Im familiar with this movie. Its the one where paps got shots of Halle’s boobies when they slipped out of her halter top and smiled at everyone. I think the photos are still on Egotastic.

  4. Sigh. says:

The jury is still out for me on that Oscar win of hers, and this looks like more of the same…I don’t know how to explain it. It’s like I can HEAR and SEE her “acting,” and this too is complete with boob flash.

I’ve never been swept up by her beauty/career/personal life, but I’ll freely admit, she is still one of the most exquisite-looking ones left.

  5. brin says:

sounds like the whole movie has a split personality.

  6. RHONYC says:

three things wrong with the trailer:

    1. gives too much away, no mystery

    2. the benal ‘OPHAH-esque’ font (lettering) of the credits *eyeroll*

    3. ‘TYLER PERRY-esque’ awful gospel singing in the background

    *ew*

    ok, i’m done. 🙁

  7. mln says:

I just can’t see her getting another nom for this it really looks laughably bad.

  8. Lulu says:

Gosh, she looks great. But I’m not feeling the movie. I hate it when actors pick movies just so they can be nominated. It just feels so contrived. But I guess that’s their job–get me that OSCAR.

  9. mel says:

The last time she was crazy that I remember was in Jungle Fever when she played a junkie and gf of Samuel L. Jackson’s character. My brother didnt believe it was Halle Berry.

  10. mslewis says:

I have to say, I never thought this thing would see the light of day. It sounded suspect from the beginning. I just can’t imagine Halle in a movie like this. Besides, the multiply personality thing has been done to death.

I remember when Halle was filming the movie in Canada and the reports were that SHE was the producer who put up the money to do it because she had tried for several years to get other investors interested but nobody wanted to do it. So she has a lot on the line. I’m assuming she has gotten a company to distribute the movie. I cannot even imagine paying money to see this mess but it might be mildly interesting.

  11. Lucy says:

I will be seeing this movie. Probably not in the theatre, only because I don’t like seeing any movie in a theatre. I want to see how they pull off this mental disorder. As a Neuropsychology major, I get a nerdy hard on from movies that go into mental illnesses and disorders.

SO, I’m going to see it because I’m a nerd.

    Halle’s looking gorgeous in it.

  12. 123isme says:

Surprisingly, this movie trailer didn’t give too much away. You know that Frankie is a dancer, you know she has an alter ego named Alice, and you know she’s getting treatment for this mental/psychological disorder. But because of the way the trailer is produced, you don’t know if Alice is actually a spirit possessing Frankie, if Frankie is Alice reincarnated and she’s having past life flashbacks, or if Alice is just an alter ego created by Frankie.

  13. tlccar says:

    does anyone remember sybil????

  14. Bella Bella says:

Why are all up tight 1950-esque multiple personalities named Alice? You know who plays the best multiple named Alice? Toni Collette! That’s who. Give that hot bitch the Oscar (or a Golden Globe… whatevs…). I don’t like Halle Berry. She makes me bored.

  15. Kim says:

She is a mediocre actress at best.

  16. Bitter fruit says:

I would see this purely for Phylicia Rashad <3

Sybill is the best film about MPD ever made. See that, tis brilliant.

  17. Amy says:

I saw Sybil in my AP Psych class in high school. Sally Fields (is that her name?) was really good in it!

  18. Camille says:

She’s had one to many nose jobs. She’s also a terrible actress. Not a fan. Would only see this movie if it came onto TV and I had nothing better to do or watch. 😀

  19. Shy says:

Oh God… There was an episode about a woman with different personalities on Law & Order: SVU. Cynthia Nixon who plays Miranda in Sex and the City 2 played that part. Now THAT WAS ACTING. How on earth Halle thought that this is an Oscar material????

  20. neelyo says:

Between this, BURLESQUE and COUNTRY STRONG, it’s turning out to be quite the year for future camp classics.

The big question of 2010 should be, ‘Who’s going to take home Worst Actress at the Razzies???’

  21. louise says:

Wasn’t this movie shot about 3 years ago? If Halle had chance at an Oscar the movie wouldn’t have been put on hold for so long.

  22. ziggy says:

she didn’t deserve the first oscar. this woman is NOT a good actress. as mediocre as the majority. agree with no. 4, her “acting’ is completely contrived. there’s nothing effortless or ‘natural’ appearing about any of her roles. she is quite pretty, though.

  23. Kim says:

meh. i will concede that halle is beautiful but a great actress? an oscar-worthy actress? i think not. she always appears to be over-acting. she is never just natural, believable. i never get lost in one of her movies. i am just very aware that it is halle berry playing the role of…

and it is just me or is that southern “accent” just atrocious?

  24. Crash2GO2 says:

She just really has the most gorgeous figure. *sigh* JA has nothin’ on her.

  25. DetRiotgirl says:

I don’t know. I thought the trailer looked alright. I’m kind of on the fence here. This could be really good. Or it could be hilariously bad. But, I felt the trailer leaned towards it being watchable at the very least. I would netflix this.

  26. Cheyenne says:

She’s not a terrible actress, but she’s not a great actress either. But looks damn good in that ‘fro.

  27. Alexis says:

    Idk. Kinda looked interesting.

  28. truthzbetta says:

Overrated, like everything about her. No talent, not even exceptional looking. I see better on the streets and if you don’t, long past time to move.

  29. *-* says:

She’s a terrible actress. You can almost see her lips move before her line is coming.. Right up there with Madonna.

  30. Liana says:

I can’t judge a film based on a two minute trailer.

  31. filthycute says:

This movie looks utterly stupid! I watched the trailer last night and couldn’t make heads or tails of the point of the film.

  32. I Choose Me says:

Was that Chandra Wilson (Bailey) I glimpsed? Love her. Oh and Phylicia Rashad is in this, so I might check it out just for her. Who knows this film might have some compelling moments and Halle can act, given the right material. Whether or not this is the right material, remains to be seen.

  33. Trippin says:

Looks good. I think she’s underrated as an actress. She’s naturally beautiful just like Angelina Jolie. Hard to find flaws in those 2 faces.
    🙂
