Walking Dead producer fires entire writing staff ahead of 2nd season (spoilers)

Walking Dead spoilers for past episodes in text, including mild possible spoilers for future episodes
It’s been a long time, if ever, since I’ve been as affected by a show as much as I have by The Walking Dead. (I think Six Feet Under was the last major series that I cared about as much, and that kind of waned as it progressed.) There are few shows as fascinating, unpredictable and terrifying. Yesterday I discovered the Walking Dead wiki (major spoilers in that link) and read some spoilers from the comic that the series is based on. Then last night I installed the iPad app and bought about 15 digital versions of the monthly comic book, starting where the show left off this week. It was engrossing, and of course not conducive to sleep at all. Reading the comics did help bring the show down to earth for me. There are soap opera twists and turns in the comic, along with some over the top scenarios that we probably won’t see in the series.

Again, spoilers for last episode, mild spoilers for future episodes
In the last episode that aired Sunday, we saw Rick and the band of survivors go to the Centers for Disease Control as a last ditch effort to get help from the government. This never happens in the graphic novel as far as I can tell. There’s no CDC and instead there’s an entirely different plot twist that I’ll only say involves some characters we’ve yet to see along with a different government facility. The place where the group ends up provides shelter from the zombies along with its own very scary pitfalls.

It’s clear that the show isn’t following in lock step with the comics, and it’s hard to tell where they’re going with it. There is just one episode left this season and word has it that Bravo AMC isn’t bringing back Walking Dead until next October! Maybe that’s a good thing, given how I’ve become attached to it. Anyway, there’s news that came out a couple of days ago that the producer/director of the television show has fired the entire writing staff. It sounds drastic and like it could affect the quality of the show, but they do have several freelance writers on staff, including the creator/writer of the comics, Robert Kirkman. Staff writers were also only responsible for a couple of episodes this season, and maybe they’ll do just as well with freelancers. Here’s the story:

walkingdeadfooter

I hear The Walking Dead writer/ executive producer/ director Frank Darabont has let go of the writers on the hot freshman AMC series, which has already renewed for a second season. That includes Darabont’s No. 2, writing executive producer Charles β€œChic” Eglee. Writer turnover on series between seasons is commonplace but wholesale overhauls are unusual. What’s more, I hear Darabont is looking to forgo having a writing staff for the second season of Walking Dead altogether and assign scripts to freelancers.

Darabont, who hails from the feature world with The Young Indiana Jones as the only series credit before Walking Dead, ended up writing 2 of the first season’s 6 episodes of Walking Dead – the pilot and the second episode – and co-writing/rewriting the other 4. Two of those 4 were written by non-staff writers, one by executive producer Robert Kirkman, on whose comics the series is based, and one by Glen Mazzara. The freelance model is employed by the Starz/BBC series Tourchwood, which in turn borrowed it from the U.K. where the show originated. Having BBC as producer has allowed Torchwood to proceed with no writing staff but I hear such a plan on an U.S.-based network series such as Walking Dead may face issues with the Writers Guild. And, while the first season of Walking Dead was only 6 episodes, its second-season order is for 13, which may prove harder to manage in pre-production, production and post-production with no writing staff. Sources tell me that no final decision has been made yet with all options open, including using some combination of a writing staff/freelances. There is time – AMC is mulling launching Walking Dead’s second season the way it did the first one – in October during Fearfest

UPDATE WEDNESDAY 10:45AM: AMC just issued a statement confirming “that there will be changes to the writing staff” of The Walking Dead.

[From Deadline]

Maybe this guy Frank Darabont thinks he can write most of the episodes himself with help from freelancers. A lot of commenters on Deadline note that he’ has a reputation for being difficult to work with. He also wrote the screenplays for The Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption (update: based on Stephen King’s books), so it’s clear he’s talented. We’ll have to see how these behind the scenes politics affect the show. Walking Dead is proving very popular. Last week’s episode had 5.6 million viewers, which was even higher than the premiere. The final episode this season airs on Sunday, and I hope they don’t leave us with too many cliffhangers.

There are potentially spoiler-filled images from the final episode to air this Sunday, on ONTD. If you’re in the US, you can also watch a preview video on AMCTV.

I heard this show was really good I just havent had a chance to watch it. I’ll catch up when its on dvd.

  2. gloaming says:

    Love this show!

I’m sure Darabont will improve on what have been less than stellar scripts – other than his first two.
I really don’t know if a bunch of writers locked in a room could do a better job than the man who adapted and won an Oscar for The Green Mile. He’s a great writer. He’s just cleaning house.

  3. Theuth says:

Frank Darabont directed The Mist, too. A very good movie based on a story by Stephen King (they are friends, by the way).
I read some of The Walking Dead comics several years ago, it was interesting. I still haven’t seen this show for fear of being disappointed by the comparison, maybe I should give a try…

  4. Sarah says:

I’m so addicted to this show. I also went and read up on the comics. I wish October would hurry and get here for season 2. lol. I don’t think that the firing of the writers is going to affect anything.

  5. Missfit says:

Awgh, I LOVE this show, it would suck to fire all of those people, which I wonder if they would get killed off or if the show would start off on someone elses point of view and story line? I like the sheriff and the blonde from the department store, she was the cop from Silent Hill.

  6. devilgirl says:

Darabont is a talented writer and can only be doing something to improve the series.

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Yea I am not all that sad some people were let go. I thought the dialogue was so odd at times. I love the show but the writing can be better but when its good its good. Man last week was so intense, I was yelling at my TV to the CDC guy. “Open the freaking door you loser, they are all gonna die, don’t make Rick look like a jackass for uprooting them and bringing them there.” Even though, LOL, I think Rick does on a daily basis because he insists on wearing his Sheriff uniform whenever he gets the chance and nobody says anything, not even Shane. LOL

Also CB the show is on AMC not Bravo. Just in case someone wants to see it they will get confused by that. Speaking of Bravo Top Chef: All Stars was amazing.

  8. No Sensei says:

    a-mazing show!

  9. Angie says:

Sorry, just a quick correction. Stephen King actually wrote The Green Mile and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Darabont wrote the screenplays. He is one of the few writers who were able to take what King wrote and make it into a good movie. He should be great about taking his own work and making into good tv. Love The Walking Dead so far!

  10. Trillion says:

Good move. The writing was very, very weak in this series. The subject matter is awesome (Zombie Apocolypse!) but the dialogue was downright painful.

  11. Kayleigh says:

No way holmes! That writing was awesome, esse! Those poor writing vatos.

See what I did there? That episode was stupid.

  12. Megan says:

love this show too! my hub and i are addicted… it was a lil slow at times but still pretty good. i hope they’re not gonna make us wait til october, thats almost a year away! πŸ™

  13. Saoirse says:

I’m totally addicted to the show. I’ve got my DVR set up to record every episode until it comes out on DVD.
@Love Angelina-LMAO!!! My hubby and I did the EXACT SAME THING! We were both screaming at the TV…but could you imagine being in that guy’s situation? We always have discussions after the show about what we would do if something like that ever happened (which it probably wouldn’t, but sure is fun to talk about!)

  14. truthSF says:

Next October??! WTF! They’ve already cheated us with only 6 episodes, now we’ll have to wait a whole year before it comes back on, DAMN!!

P.S. This show’s seriously made me want to move as far away from ATL and the CDC. I’ve been having nightmares about an outbreak here since I started watching the show, lol!

  15. gloaming says:

To late to edit my earlier post. Darabont adapted The Shawshank Redemption from the Novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.

  16. Eve says:

Never heard about Frank Darabont being difficult to work with…that’s really odd. On the contrary, I’ve heard only nice things about him, how committed he is with his work, how he cuts unnecessary things in order to fit the movie’s budget.

As far as I know, he’s also a great screenwriter (and in my opinion, the only one who should be allowed to adapt Stephen King’s stories for the big screen — King himself did an awful job with Pet Sematary) so I don’t think he’ll have any problems during the next season.

  17. Ph0sph0r says:

    IMO Episode rating (minimal spoil):
    episode 1: 5/5
The slow start was needed to capture the human condition and solidify a base for the main character.

    episode 2: 5/5
A good followup to the 1st. Introduces Glen and played very, very well by his character. Good action and communications.

    episode 3: 4/5
Start to see some holes in certain sequences. Main character reunites and other characters emerge. Still quite good.

    episode 4: 3/5
Characters from the comic series die prematurely and way out in left field from the original series – which pokes even more holes where there shouldn’t be any. Good action.

    episode 5: 2/5
Close to an abomination – now, as clueless as a normal person would be in a situation like this, at the end they are suddenly on a quest to find out if they can get help from the CDC. Who even knows where their local CDC is? Horrible ending.

    (Spoiler alert)

This is supposed to be a story of a mans survival and morality issues that come with the onslaught of an zombie apocolypse. The writers have rooted themselves into the series to “Hollywood-ize” it. Instead of adding more depth, they have poked numerous holes in the storyline to make is borderline cheese-fest. Having the woman cry over her sister for 24hrs straight didn’t help. The ending of the 5th was just stupid. They get into the city, lots of dead bodies and no undead, they find their destination with little issue, then all of a sudden undead pop out… the door opens with a light shining out like theres an alien on the other side. The end. Stupid. Monotonous. Dull. Boring in many ways along with cheesy. They are ruining this series quick and needed this cleansing badly before myself and many others turn our backs…and I am a big fan of the comic and undead movies.

  18. RobN says:

If the next series doesn’t air until October, then he’s got a long time to write the next six or eight episodes by himself with whatever help he needs. Could be he’s got a vision for the series and doesn’t want others screwing with it.

Scene where blond woman is holding her dead sister and you just know dead sister is about to come back to “life” was freaking intense and it’s why I watch this show.

  19. Sophie says:

I think this is a good move. The writing on the show is probably its biggest weakness (clunky dialogue, huge plot holes, etc).

Nonetheless there is no way the show is ever going to be less than totally awesome and badass so I wouldn’t worry.

  20. Mia135 says:

Another Walking Dead addict here! LOVE the show and the characters.

Can’t believe I have to wait until next October for season two.

I was thinking the blonde woman was going to find a way to keep the dead sister ‘alive’ and the dead sister would come back and zombie-eat them all, so it was heart-breaking but also relief that she shot her in the head!

I also don’t think we have seen the last of the man they left by the tree(sorry, I haven’t memorized the characters’ names by heart yet). The one who got slightly bitten during the attack. He’s going to come back whether as a zombie or not, remains to be seen.

I love the fact that despite all this zombie-talk, it’s not even really a show about zombies at all.

  21. Catherine the Great says:

Ok, I officially have a crush on Shane/Jon Bernthal! Hot Guy Friday, anyone?? πŸ™‚

  22. Camille says:

I am so looking forward to this show airing on TV in NZ next year, can’t wait! πŸ™‚

  23. deb says:

LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!I’m not usually into Zombie shows but I am now lol lol

  24. erynmarch says:

“Close to an abomination – now, as clueless as a normal person would be in a situation like this, at the end they are suddenly on a quest to find out if they can get help from the CDC. Who even knows where their local CDC is? Horrible ending.”
    ————————–
you know what’s funny? i live in the neighborhood most of the scenes have been shot in and my daughter used to hang out at the quarry the’ve been camping out around. i actually DO know where the CDC is in atlanta, and the building they shot as the CDC is actually the cobb energy performing arts center in cobb county outside atlanta.

    i almost LOLd when i saw it : D

love the show, though. one of my friends was a horse-entrail eating zombie in ep.1 and a shot in the head zombie in ep.3 i think…

  25. Jeri says:

This show is good and so scary – it just sneaks up on you. I hope it doesn’t get ruined now.

Has Frank Darabont ever handled a successful long-running TV series?

  26. LittleDeadGirl says:

Also a Walking Dead addict. For a moment I thought they fired any of the actors and was about to have a break down. I hope this won’t affect the show but I have to agree some of the eps are a bit clunkier than others so maybe those were written by the people that got fired? Who knows.

I’m bummed they are airing it next October … it’s too long … they are having great ratings. Anyone guess why they are waiting so long?

  27. Trillion says:

ITA, Catherine, the actor who plays Shane is just my type. Wish we’d had more sex scenes before Rick came back! (“Rick” is handsome too, just not really my type. I think of him as a sort of poor girl’s Viggo).

  28. PrettyLights says:

I started watching the show after Mad Men ended, and I do like it but I agree the writing can be better at times. The last episode was pretty terrible – way too cheesy, and the most intense part was def when the sister was about to wake up. I will watch it again next season but I do hope the writing and dialogue gets better.

  29. Ph0sPh0r says:

I watched ep.5 again with my son a little while ago and for some reason I liked the parts that didn’t piss me off more and hated the parts that pissed me off even more. I don’t really know what to think anymore. To add further despair for myself, the fake “cam” for the CDC guy and the animation for the cells was dripping syfy swiss cheese.

Thats pretty cool that you know all the sights around there, erynmarch. Other people don’t know any better, so it’s a nice bit of info. I would love to be a zombie on the show someday just to say “son, see I’m that zombie in the corner over there. Ya the one with entrails hanging out of it’s ass.” Hey, the undead don’t care too much about their looks.

Never understood the old zombie flicks where they crave “brains” though. If they are killed by a shot to the head and eat brains, they won’t multiply all that much. Just sayin.

  30. Bitter fruit says:

This is the funniest show on tv right now. Stupid, illogical, so much cheese. I watch and laugh my ass off. Needs more zombies, less soap opera shit.

  31. Jag says:

I like the show and hope they don’t make us wait a year to see it again. It does need some work, but for now, was the best thing on television, other than Survivor, imo. Hope next season they’ll put all the episodes on the website, since it’s difficult for me to wait until the 10 pm start time.

@erynmarch ~ That’s so cool! I’ve been entering the contest in hopes of being a zombie at some point. lol

  32. Missfit says:

Oh, my bad…you said (writing staff)…I was thinking the show’s cast…lmao @ me. Hmm, he writing wasn’t too bad, but I hope who is hired does even better then. πŸ˜‰ The waking up in the hospital was very Resident Evil and I saw it in 28 Days Later, waking up in the hospital, with a empty town full of zombies. Then walking with the zombies was kinda like from the movie Shaun of the Dead, lol.
