Katie Holmes: “I will forever wage the battle of the thighs”

Katie Holmes has an interview in last week’s Hello magazine that hasn’t been widely quoted because she didn’t say much of interest. She’s been coached and prodded into perfecting the art of giving mild interviews that focus on how happy and normal her life with Tom Cruise is while containing very little information that reveals anything of substance. You read what she says and shake your head because she’s sounds so full of shit sometimes. In this latest interview she came across like she has a poor body image though and she practically said that she’s waiting for her thighs to get fat. She didn’t quite phrase it like that, but you see where she gets the motivation to be so thin if this is how she thinks:

With the paparazzi around you constantly, does it make you conscious of how you look?
“It doesn’t bother me. No matter what I look like, they are going to try and get a shot anyway, so I might as well be honest about it. I am always aware of it. I’m used to being aware of them being there, but now I find I just want to protect everyone around me.”

Is there any part of your body that bothers you?
“I try to embrace my imperfections. But I will forever wage the battle of the thighs! So I prefer not to show them off. I am pretty tall. Usually most actresses are tiny and I’m not - I’m a big one.”

Does Tom ever comment on what you wear?
“I love it when Tom tells me I look great. It gives me such confidence. Sometimes it makes me blush but i also gives me attitude. Every woman likes to be old she looks beautiful.”

[From Hello! Magazine, print edition, July 15, 2008]

About 4-5 years ago I was really fit, like at a level I don’t even remotely approach now. (I keep trying, but with a kid it’s an uphill battle.) I went to the gym six days a week and was obsessive about it, and that was basically my main hobby other than my Internet addiction. I was single and had a lot of free time. I remember talking to two of my married girlfriends who were both skinny and gorgeous but complaining about their body parts saying their arms were too flabby, they didn’t like their tiny tummies, etc., and I was like “I’m pretty happy with my body.” I didn’t mean to be conceited about it. I was honestly in a good place with my body at that time and felt like I was right where I wanted to be. I was self conscious about other stuff, like my hair and skin, but I couldn’t complain about my body.

There are thin athletic women who think they can improve I guess, but can you imagine being Katie Holmes and being conscious of your thighs? Maybe I would hate my helmet hair if I were her, but her body is so thin. When you’re friends with women like Victoria Beckham you can get completely unrealistic standards of what constitutes “perfection.” Do you think she really feels that way or did she just come up with something to say because she didn’t want to seem too happy with her body?

As for how she gets compared to Posh, Katie said her style is softer than Victoria’s and that “We are great friends and she is such a lovely woman. Yes, Victoria has a strong sense of style but I feel my style is different. She always looks great, whereas my style is very easy and laid-back.”

Katie also said that Suri picks out most of her own clothes, something she revealed in another interview late last year, and that Suri loves shoes but is not into pink clothing like other little girls. Hopefully Suri will have a better body image than her mom and won’t become prey to the self esteem issues that can plague girls. There’s something about Suri that seems kick ass to me and I have a feeling she’ll hold her own in life. We can only hope that’s true for her sake.

Here is Katie Holmes on The Late Show in January. She wore a super short dress so maybe she was lying about her thighs. She lied pretty well during her appearance on Punk’d I remember.

  1. Not sure what is so perplexing here - Katie may be tall and thin, but she is right - her body isn’t quite that of “other actresses” that are considered to have great bodies. I am in no way saying she is fat or unappealing, I’m saying her body does have a certain shape (particularly in the legs/thighs) that has obviously genetically been given to her. I think she’s beautiful, but I can see where she’s coming from.

  2. Maybe, but I don’t see it. I would KILL for legs like that!

  3. I think all she’s really doing is pointing out a particular personal trouble-spot - an area where she’s prone to putting on weight. But I’d disagree that she’s thin. Slim, rather than thin. She’s got an athletic frame which looks great (apart from when she slouches)

I agree, cici, she just looks awkward and self-conscious sometimes, as if she’s not comfortable in her own skin.

  4. I think she’s being genuine. Like Katie, I am tall and relatively thin but I’ll never rock skinny jeans well and shorts and short skirts make me self-conscious. I get a charge out of showing my legs during that brief period during the weight swing where I feel good about them. Maybe she does, too.

  5. When she got pregnant, ALL the weight (aside from the ever-changing belly size) went straight to her thighs. So I think I know what she’s referring to. They did get pretty chunky for awhile.

  8. I am not the skinniest person on earth but I just loooooove my body. People think am conceited but I can’t find a part of my body I can change. Maybe my skin, I spend so much to keep it smooth. I wish it was naturally smooth.

Katie seems OK to me, Cheryl Tweedy also hates her legs, they seemed OK to me. Katie has a good body for casual clothes. Athletic like Geronimo said. I agree she just didn’t want to sound like she is too happy with her body.

  9. I think I just don’t get the issue with problem areas like my friends like to point out. If you’re fit and you’re rocking the best body you can, why stress over some thighs that aren’t super thin? I have a thicker shape on the bottom too, but when I was probably less fit than her I was pretty damn content with it. If she wants to “fix” those supposed problem thighs with surgery she can too, not that it’s a good idea.

  10. CB, to be fair tho’, she’s in the public eye and prone to constant scrutiny and seeing unflattering pics of herself in the media. And seeing comments about herself (like here!) which are bound to feed any existing insecurities. And she doesn’t come across as a very secure person.

Also, women are very bad at seeing themselves through other people’s eyes. If a woman finds a particular part of her body unattractive, then nothing anyone else says in contradiction of its unattractiveness makes one iota of difference.

  11. Um..at that video. She’s tense. I mean- notice the awkward almost intentional hand gestures, like she was remembering where she had to insert them: especially when she would gesture towards Letterman when she was asking him a question. Just awkward. It took me back to the days of
high school debate team and her moves were just like some of the nervous newbies. Damn. I wonder what she was like in her old interviews (i.e. when she was on Letterman during her Dawson’s days) it would be interesting to see the contrast. She seems calm but maybe inside she is just a mess.

  12. I think her body looks fine, it’s that smirk and bad posture that bother me. Of course they’re both due to the advent of Tiny Tom into her life. But if you feel awkward to be married to a short man and feel you must always slouch to be closer to his height, then possibly you shouldn’t have married the little twerp in the first place.

  13. There was a pre-Cruise SNL that she hosted showing off her dancing chops during the show opening introductions. I thought she looked really darn, and her legs were not hidden.

  14. Blackalicious, you can pull up the old Letterman interviews on youtube. There is a funny one where he is making fun of Tom Cruise, before they met.

  15. IDK if it’s the makeup, lighting or what but she looks SO OLD in that first picture!!! She looks to be about 47 and nearing 50 in a hard way. Did she get a nose job, it looks so thin and Michael Jacksonish. What is Tom doing to her?? Her posture in that 1st pic looks like a mannequin that’s been put together backwards. :(

  16. I remember her mom has a shape like that, with chuncky calves. But this is the price of genetics. She’s tall the same height as her mom. I wish she wouldn’t try to be so thin. We hear all the time that Tommy likes thin women. I hope she can deal with this some way.

  17. She does have thick legs, but she’s always had them. You have the body shape you were born to have - you can work out and be healthy, but if you have larger legs, you’ll probably always have them.

I just wish she’d stop with whatever she’s doing with her face & hair. She looks like Mrs. Robinson!

  18. I think she’s fine just the way she is. Her legs are thin but shapely and her thighs look great to me! I think she was just trying to be “normal” and bitch about her thighs so she fits in with the rest of female society.

  21. But she CAN fix the ashy knees.

I can’t tell you the last time I thought about my thighs or obsessed over my body and that quote of hers in the headline has to be the most depressing thing ever.

  22. at first I thought it was a picture of Anna Wintour.

She needs to start looking her age, not her husbands.

  23. She is so uptight now. She’s always looked great, she’s not even as “not like the other girls” as she thinks she is. I’ve seen her look even more emaciated then she does in these pictures. Poor thing, she’s not herself these days, is she?

  24. She looks great to me, but of course most celebs know how to dress to hide flaws and draw attention to their best assets, and know who to stand and pose for pics. Most of the time, we only see what they want us to see so it’s surprising when they point out their physical flaws (or what they consider flaws). Only goes to show that we’re all human and I don’t know any woman who doesn’t have at least one thing they don’t like about their body.
