Access Hollywood has a red carpet interview with Johnny Depp at The Tourist premiere, and he says some really interesting, thoughtful things as we’ve come to expect from him. One thing I learned, and a trait that I share with Johnny, is that he doesn’t like to talk on the phone at all and prefers using the Internet. It could be due to the fact that he’s a world class star and values his personal time with his family, but there may be another reason. Like Johnny, I also live in a foreign country and it’s a bitch to talk on the phone when you’re not confident in your language skills. I’ve had phone conversations in German of course but it’s not a simple prospect for me. As a result I don’t like using the phone and it’s even hard for me when I’m visiting the states. It’s like I’ve lost my phone mojo.
Depp also talked glowingly about his fans, calling them his “employers” and explained that his Pirates teeth are still in because he just finished filming. He’s been asked about those teeth before while on this press tour.
On why he spends so much time with fans at the premiere
They’ve come here for a reason. If I’m some sliver of a part of that reason, I’d like to go out there and say ‘thank you.’ They’re the employers, you know.On how long he’ll keep his pirates teeth
Just until I can find a dentist to rip them out, essentially. They sort of have to be yeah, yanked out… we just literally finished like, you know, last week. Why he doesn’t have a phone
We have Internet and stuff like that because I think that’s the safest form, well, most interesting form of communication. I just don’t like phones. I just don’t like them… being reachable all the time… You’d have to you know to just buzz me on the Internet or something [to get ahold of me]”
[From Access Hollywood]
You can watch the video of Johnny’s interview on Access Hollywood. I know some people have soured on him based on his stance on the Roman Polanski debacle, but he still strikes me as one of the most genuine, decent people in Hollywood.
Oh and MTV’s brilliant celebrity interviewer, Josh Horowitz, has a series of interviews with Johnny that you can watch on MTV’s site. Johnny is asked how he feels about no longer being the sexiest man alive, and he deadpans “I feel emasculated, I feel beaten down like some pathetic harp seal.” He also confirms a previous assertion that he’ll do a 21 Jump Street cameo if it’s offered, and says that Angelina Jolie’s humor is often ‘scatological.’ With that many kids, no wonder she’s got her mind on poop.

There’s the Roman Polanski stuff, AND the fact that he looks like an f’n moron in those clothes and the hair, ugh.
Then again I’ve never really cared about him in the first place.

I don’t agree with his Roman Polanski stance, but what…that’s one negative compared to a million positives? Love him. Oh and I am the same about phones and I live in the US. I don’t like talking on the phone at all. Texting is the way to go.

Only German-speakers will understand the title

I loved his MTV interview. Loved how genius he was when talking about how he was all sad about losing his “Sexist Man Of The Year” title. It was so funny, I love how funny he is.

I doubt he dislikes talking on the phone on account of him spending most of his time living in France. His French is quite flawless and has been so for many years (my French aunt once bumped into him in Paris many years ago and had a brief conversation with him & a friend of mine knows him intimately & has told me many times how good Johnny’s French is). I bet it’s just tiring to him, I know lots of people who hate talking on the phone and prefer face to face contact for the conversations that really matter.

Hmm a denim shirt with a vest and blazer over the top…. Only Depp could pull that off.

@Anna – On Letterman last year Depp made it sound like his French was just passable, but that’s probably just his way. He’s very low-key about everything.

What Anna said. Nothing to do with language, just the control that interaction via the internet gives you where you choose when and how you want to talk/comunicate with someone.
Johnny is an original and an all-rounder in all the good and important ways.

@CB – I didn’t know that, didn’t see that appearance (I don’t have a TV + live in Europe). I just know what my friend & aunt have told me. Oftentimes, non-native speakers think their language skills in a particular foreign language are passable, when in fact they’re quite good. Maybe it’s something like that? Or maybe he thinks his accent is still too strong?

@anna…do tell about your friend knowing him intimately….

@guesty – it’s not *that* kind of intimately
, my friend’s a guy who’s a producer and became friends with Johnny many, many years ago. Before Angelina confirmed it in all those Tourist PR interviews, my friend was already always telling me how much of a family man Johnny is and he’s also talked to me about Johnny’s love for painting and that he is really good at it. My friend just loves Johnny’s works and says they’re beautiful. I wish I could see them for myself! (I also wish I knew Johnny, but that’s another story *lol*, we all wish we’d know him, right?)

I love his style. So many celebrities take the safe route or seem to have the same stylist. He has his own look. He always comes across intelligent and down to Earth in interviews. I often wonder how the music career he left for acting would have turned out.

I dont have a i-phone, black berry or twitter or myspace or facebook account. I have an email address that I check once every other day. I feel sorry for just about all the peopel around me because they dont have the liberty I do. I can literally disappear whenever I feel like it. And only those that I want around me know how to reach me. Any email I get I print out as well as all my documents and I dont bother saving them to the PC. Just print and youve got what you need filed away. I just wont let my life be ones and zeros.

The only thing is – he has children. Wouldnt he want to carry a cell phone just to be reachable? He probably has a phone that just a few people call him on, like the mother of his children.
I love him.

Johnny has too much makeup on as often now he has!
am I the only one seeing Johnny much changed and very aged? He looks like a parody of himself, he’s to puffy and has tons of makeup on!!! I don’t see him good now! he was a wonderful guy untill Sweeney Todd premiere 2008, now he put on weight, he’s puffy, his smile is strange (botox?)…I don’t understand what happened to him

I’m uncomfortable on the phone too! I hate answering the phone and don’t really like calling either. I don’t know if it’s because I’m nervous of not being able to keep a conversation going, I hate pauses especially when you can’t see the other person. Internet and text messages are for me!
This man is just so…….I have no words, I’m just loving him more and more.

Not a Depp fan, but totally agree with him about phones;they are a total nuisance. Hate making calls, hate receiving calls, would rather communicate via email.

Yeah….not that he has anything to hide, but Big Brother is always watching err listening too.

Its funny b/c part of my job requires me to use a phone during the day but personally, I hate talking on phones myself.
Honestly, texting and email are my favorite ways of communicating. I answer on my time not theirs. (I’m also quirky, I dont like to actually use my voice all the time. Weird, I know)
I remember as a teenager, I stayed on the phone constantly, you couldn’t get me off the thing, nowdays, you are lucky if I answer.

Definitely hate the phone.
Definitely Love Johnny!!

Johnny’s french is totally flawless : the tone, the pronunciation, the vocabulary.
This coming from a native francophone. I have seen him speaking and replying in french multiple times on french TV, even naming some of the french words he love the most.
Vanessa has always speaks french to him and the kids are more francophone than anglophone.
Just like the kids of my American friend with his french woman. The kids are MORE french than AMERICAN and reply in French to any english question their father ask. Also, they have a french accent when they speak in english.

He has really grown on me in the last few years. What he said about being reachable all the time is exactly why I do not own a cellphone. Friends like to tell me I “need” one. To which I reply that if I am at the park or somewhere else with my kids, I don’t want to be bothered with ringing phones. Leave me a message or send me an email and I’ll get back to them when I want to.
I like his attitude toward his fans. Often, celebrities seem annoyed by their fans, ignoring them and refusing autographs. He seems really cool and appreciative of what he has in his life. That’s a great attitude to have, in general.

i totally agree with the cell phones and being reachable all the time. I hate it, and am known to not answer the phone…to many peoples displeasure. but i feel like being reachable all the time is very intrusive, which is ironic, as i work in the cell phone industry lol.
as somebody else noted though, i wonder if he has a phone, but just a few people know the number, and he doesn’t really use it…seems dangerous to not have a phone at all, what if there was a real emergency?

He is always the most gracious when it comes to his fans. Unlike some stars, he actually understands that without fans, you are basically unemployed. I love him.

Continues to be my all time favorite. He’s going to be on Letterman soon. I have it set on my DVR.

Love him. He’s so cool! An aside…is his right leg shorter than his left leg? It looks like his right shoe is “built up” slightly. Just curious…

My French ex husband mistook him for a clerk! at a shop in the south of France about 6 years ago. He speaks French (with an accent of course) fluently. I wish I had been there!

I’m glad you commented on the polanski thing since so many folks would “chime” in on just about every article there is about him and bring it up as if we all aren’t supposed to like him just because they don’t, or that they need something for us to “finally” turn against him if the USA comments didn’t to the trick or something, hell let us have the choice of that, we search the net and troll for quotes for complete strangers just like you all do too smh..
oh and why are people comapring him to Mickey Rourke? He’s been dressing that way for a long time as well.
