“Be Kanye” spoof ads advertise vodka covertly

Anthony Dixon / WENN
Puffy has a $100 million deal to promote Ciroc vodka and Kanye West is the face of Absolut in new egocentric ads that don’t even reveal they’re promoting anything more than Kanye-ness.

There are new “Be Kanye” spoof ads featuring little tablets that promise to turn you into Kanye West that are actually ads for Absolut. According to the “Be Kanye” ads, vodka can solve all your problems and make you rich, arrogant and attractive to women. Because all you need to do to feel good about yourself is get wasted.

Granted you have to google and visit the website to see the ads to realize that they’re substituting little pills for vodka and making it seem like a cure all. Removing the product from the ad makes you do that extra bit of work that supposedly connects you to the brand or whatever marketing people would call it in that ridiculous jargon-filled way that they speak. JayBird said she saw these ads a couple weeks ago in NY and looked them up at home. They must be effective because JayBird did it and here we are giving them free advertising.

When Diddy did a presumably blind taste test on Ellen of four different vodkas he made a face at the vodka that turned out to be Absolut and had trouble telling the difference between Ketel One and Ciroc, saying they both went down well. That was more convincing to me than these ads, because I care if a vodka tastes smooth and helps me preserve the sexy. I want to be me, but with a buzz and without a hangover the next day.

More obvious ad where all the clubgoers try to be Kanye to get the ladies:

  1. At :57 the top video says “In an Absolut World.” That’s how I figured it out when I first saw the ad a few weeks ago. It IS actually a funny video, the way it’s spoofing late night ads and informercials. I don’t actually like Kanye all that much, but I like the video. It’s funny.

  2. Oddly, I then had the urge to drink a lot of Absolut vodka in an attempt to become much, much cooler than I am. Which was awkward, because I was on the bus looking at the ad, and supposedly public drunkenness is frowned upon. And I’m already made up of just about as much coolness as any one person can be. I’m going to start a “Be JayBird” ad campaign throughout the greater tri-state region. That’s some guerrilla marketing for you.

  4. I want a Kanye pill!

    NOT!!!

This no talent loser is cashing in on anything he can to extend his 15 minutes of fame.

  5. Aw, Spoonman, taht’s just ludicrous, what you said! Are you high? Kanye West has immense talent, is an enormously successful WINner, is truly famous and not a 15 minuter, and is a businessman with many irons in the fire, not “cashing in” on “anything” to extend fame!! What an odd statement to make, and so incredibly erroneous…

I mean, look, I’m not a special Kanye West fan, or anything, I’m just saying - there’s zero truth in that entire comment. If you don’t like the guy or his art, fine, but it’s just plain silly to call him talentless and a loser, etcetera, merely because you dislike his products, art and character. Silly goose!

  7. His personality kind of grates on my nerves, but I think he’s talented as all get-out. I would totally take a Kanye Pill. But the girl version. Kanyette?

  8. Have you heard the Estelle song “American Boy”? He’s featured on it and he raps about his, um, bratty disposition, lol. It’s actually pretty funny, too.

I think the poster is hilarious and my brother, a huge Kanye fan would love me forever if I could get my hands on one for him, I’m sure!

  9. JB hit the nail on the head: lame personality, awesome music.

And his fame is much longer than 15 minutes; I remember playing his songs way back when I was a community college radio D.J., and I’m now graduated from a four year and get paid to be a broadcaster.

  11. I thought these were pretty clever and funny the first time I saw them on the subway. The promotion website also has some tongue in cheek references to his behavior, like “the only allergic reaction will be against things not done to your liking by others.” All in all, I like it.

  12. yeah nouvel, they’re both weirdos. everything would be so much better if they just acted like normal celebrities and never did or said anything original or interesting.

for the record, i was so excited about these posters when i first saw them because i figured they were an ad for a new kanye album or his tour or something. the fact that it’s for absolut ruins it for me.
