Simon Le Bon talks about Duran Duran’s follow-up album to Rio, 30 years later

Way back in junior high, I loved Duran Duran. If you think Justin Bieber fans are dedicated, they are lightweights compared to the Durannies. To this day, I can still remember every word to every Duran Duran song from the 80s, yet I have to double-check my own zip code.

Well, Duran Duran is still around. Their new album, called All You Need Is Now, was produced by Mark Ronson.

Simon Le Bon (squeeee) and Nick Rhodes talked to Time magazine about the past and future.

Ronson has called All You Need Is Now “an imaginary follow-up to Rio”–your hit 1982 album. Whose idea was that?

Le Bon: Mark comes from a fan’s perspective. He said that he was a little disappointed as a kid because [our third album] didn’t really seem to fulfill our promise. Mark wanted to get back to the sense of experimentation from our first two albums. He would say, “No, that’s too normal, too normal. I want you to be more out there.”

Do you feel that your audience has changed over the years?

Rhodes: The Internet has changed the way people consume music. Kids now are likely to have some of our music, some Beatles, some Kanye. They mix it all up a lot more.

Do you have second thoughts about your early fashion choices?

Le Bon: People ask this question a lot. And I look at them and think, O.K., maybe it looks strange now. But at the time it was cool.

Rhodes: I’ve still got all my clothes from the videos. Museums are calling me up all the time.

The band is named after the villain in the movie Barbarella. Does Jane Fonda know?

Le Bon: Absolutely. I saw her recently, and she said, “At first, I thought you were having a laugh at my expense. But later on, when I was in a more humorous relationship, I saw the funny side of it.”

[Time, print edition, January 10, 2011]

I doubt I’ll buy the new album. I listened to the new single All You Need Is Now on the official site, and the chorus sounds a little like vintage D2 but the rest is sort of annoying. I prefer to remember Duran Duran as they were in the Save a Prayer video.

Note by Kaiser: Simon Le Bon 4 Eva. I still think he looks incredibly hot.

le sigh…my favorite was always the bass player, John Taylor.

Oh, how I loved Duran Duran! Still do, actually. Don’t judge.

  2. Gigohead says:

Kaiser is a woman after my own damn heart. I’m a big Duran Duran fan. I had DREAMED of seeing them in concert and I did as a grown ass woman about 3 years ago. My boss had won some tickets and gave them to me. I didn’t get to do the meet and greet because I was sent to another part of the theatre and the usher forgot to get me, but I did score the BEST seats. They were awesome live!! Had a blast!!!!!!

  3. anon33 says:

    Second the SQUEEEEEEEEE

Gigohead, I saw them in 98 or 99 and they were hands down one of the best shows I’ve ever been to!!

and ITA w/Kaiser-Simon LeBon is the sex and always has been!!

  4. annaloo says:

“I’ve still got all my clothes from the videos. Museums are calling me up all the time.”

GOOD LORD, I LOVE NICK RHODES…only he can make statements like that and I swoon…

  5. Christine says:

I used to have an entire wall of Duran Duran pics that I would periodically rearrange. I was 14. Roger Taylor- the drummer- was (and is!) my favorite. Those eyes.

  6. Kaiser says:

When I was choosing photos, I saw the header of Simon with the beard, and I swear I swooned a little. He still looks damn good.

  7. Krista says:

Oh man, my mom loved Duran Duran so much she named me after them: my middle name is “Duran.” So I, obviously, had be a fan as well…

  8. JenWind says:

Simon has always been my favorite and will always be!! I still love their music, and will have to catch this new album for sure!!

  9. GroovyVic says:

May I also echo the SQUEEEEE sentiment?

  10. MSat says:

Yay! I love Duran Duran and maybe I will finally get to see them live! I was a big John Taylor fan. These days, I think Simon looks the best out of the five.

  11. Rachael says:

I like the album. It’s good. Give it a shot.

  12. scrappy says:

me to christine. you couldn’t even see the wall with all the photos. i even had a satin duran duran jacket! and john taylor was my favorite.

  13. mln76 says:

I was all about John Taylor back in the day but Simon is aging well.

  14. Jason says:

I don’t like that fur coat on him, Duran Duran very mediocre band. I always thought they were overrated.
“wild Boys” one of the worst songs in music history.

  15. Keljo says:

I’ll add to the love. Grew up with Duran Duran…I was a teenage girl when they first hit, so they were a huge part of my formative years! 🙂 I honestly hadn’t given them much thought until I went to see them in concert in 2004 or 2005 (it was the Astronaut tour). Astronaut was a really good album, and the concert was phenomenal. They’re definitely back on my radar.

  16. Chickie Baby says:

Damn, he still looks great. Love me some Simon! Always have, always will.

And still have all the albums–pressed vinyl, in the original sleeves, with the liner notes. If only we could still see the videos all the time, life would be just about perfect.

  17. original kate says:

    hagrid…is that you?

  18. anon33 says:

    @Chickie baby:

Oh man I cannot remember what year it was, but they DID release a VHS copy (I still have mine) of all of the famous videos in conjunction with a greatest hits album, or something like that….

AHA!! I don’t know to embed links but it is Duran Duran Greatest and it was released on DVD in 2003. I just found it on Amazon and now must buy it!!!

  19. Eve says:

I was a die hard Durannie too, Sammie. Seriously, it was bad (don’t judge, I was a little girl when I first listened to them!). I still think they’re one of the best pop bands during the 80s and early 90s.

P.S.: he looks really good for his age, wish only he wasn’t wearing that coat.

P.P.S.: Agree with MSat, Simon Le Bon is the one who looks the best now — it used to be John Taylor but he’s aged terribly.

  20. Kim says:

John will always be my favorite. Is he still married?

  21. tooey says:

John Taylor – had the posters and everything and I wasn’t even a teen, lol. Well, 19, maybe 20…

  22. granos says:

Chickie Baby you’re so LUCKY to have your albums! Mom “accidently” threw mine out. Mr. Granos has promised to get tix when they next come around. Nick was always my fave. And Hungry Like the Wolf is my karaoke signature song.

  23. Sarah says:

Love him, love Duran Duran. I also saw the Astronaut tour at Madison Square Garden and it was awesome. The new album is really good – ‘Leave a Light On’ and ‘The Man Who Stole a Leopard’ are great tracks. Durannie forever…

  24. CooCooCatchoo says:

I was a diehard fan in the 80’s as a teenager like so many of you. Kept scrapbooks of clippings, taped all of the videos, everything. My first concert ever was their Detroit ’84 date. Sigh. A friend of mine arranged for backstage passes when they were in Nashville in the late 90s. I was a grown woman and shook like a leaf when I met them LOL. Had my pic taken with Nick and Simon, they signed an autograph and were incredibly nice. Great concert, too. What a cool moment for someone who absolutely adored them back in the day!

  25. CooCooCatchoo says:

John was my favorite, too :). I remember how bad I felt when I heard about his (past) drug problem. I thought he was awesome – he was an idol of so many bass players in bands that became famous after Duran Duran.

  26. Sumodo1 says:

Simon is aging so well! Will they tour?

  27. Bailey says:

    I loved John too. Delicious!

  28. Eve says:

I thought he was awesome – he was an idol of so many bass players in bands that became famous after Duran Duran.

    @ CooCooCatchoo:

That’s because he was/is an awesome bass player.

  29. Kim says:

I was going to marry Jon Taylor when i grew up – didnt quite work out- hahaha!
Love Duran Duran! Will say I saw a few concerts back in the day and they arent the best in concert esp Simons voice.

  30. Darla says:

    SQEEEEEEEEE squared, Hypersquee

I loved Duran Duran, and I love that they are still around. Jason, you can suck a turtle.

  31. Green Is Good says:

I still love Duran Duran! (Reflex-flex-flex-flex!)

  32. Bill Hicks is God says:

Will they update lyrics accordingly so that Rio now shuffleboards on the sand instead of dancing on it?

  33. Javagirl1 says:

Come undone is one of the best songs ever. @krista: lol my son’s middle name is fleetwood after fleetwood Mac.

  34. C-Love says:

Suck it, Jason, Duran Duran RULES!!! John Taylor was THE hottest guy around! Actually, I am surprised so many on here liked him, only because Simon and Nick got all the attention. But God, he was hot!!!

  35. nnn says:

    The reflex..flex, flex, flex…

Oh boy, i still have the melody in my mind !

  36. normades says:

Simon is sexxxxxx, but he needs to loose the beard

  37. Katherine says:

Jon Taylor was the best looking of the bunch, but I don’t miss Duran Duran, their music sucks bigtime.

  38. LisaMarie says:

I was 11 when I first loved them – and I don’t know why but my marriage to Simon never came to fruition! DANG! Anyway thank you for the pic – still love him!!

  39. dread pirate cuervo says:

John Taylor was one of my first big crushes. But I loved Simon, too. Spent hours & hours in my basement listening to Seven & the Ragged Tiger on a little blue record player.

  40. Mary says:

I’ve been a fan since 1982! Wow, I’m that old. Always loved Roger and got to meet the band a few years ago in Atlantic City. They always put on an amazing show, even for the half hearted fans, would love it. Full of energy!
The new album is only nine songs and as much as I want to LOVE it, I just like it. The music is amazing, the slower song are great, but the lyrics and Simon’s voice don’t really hold up. I also miss Andy Taylor on guitar. His talent is notable missing. Even so, I’ll still see them live any day.

@ Kim..John Taylor is married. His wife owns 1/2 of Juicy Couture.

  41. jessica says:

John Taylor was clearly the cutest!!!

  42. Christine says:

I love Duran Duran. Saw them a few years ago and when the lights went up and they were all just standing there I was screaming like a 12 year old. (I was in my mid thirties) John was my fav, but Simon is aging better.

  43. pixiegirl says:

How ON EARTH does that man still look that good????

  44. Kath says:

“Do you have second thoughts about your early fashion choices?”

What, as opposed to the stellar choices he’s making now? That coat, the beard, his whole look is heinous. But they had it going on back in the day. It’s sad to see him old and bloated, I was a huge fan in the 80’s.

  45. Jag says:

Duran Duran was the second concert I ever saw, the first being Rick Springfield on his “Jessie’s Girl” tour. Then, of course, Power Station live. I was going to marry Simon, and my sister was going to marry John.

Love that they’re still rocking, but hate that Simon’s wearing fur, both on his body and face. lol I stopped listening to them when they changed their sound so much in the 90’s. Maybe it’s time to listen again, eh?

Sis and I had their posters – both regular and giant, buttons covering our jackets, and almost every album and song they ever put out on vinyl – including the European records that had to be specially imported to the US. I even wore a hat just like Simon’s in “Hungry Like the Wolf,” over my dyed-black, but Madonna-style hair. Many of my friends and I were wearing virgin bracelets on our wrists, and lace, fingerless gloves. (I rocked out to Def Leppard and Bon Jovi back then, too. Love it that these bands are still around and touring!)

/sigh Those were such good times. We certainly were wild fans back then. 🙂

  46. Kiska says:

I use to have a Duran Duran poster in my closet. It was my secret place to go and I’d make out with John Taylor. God, he was beautiful to look at. Those cheek bones! This is a good flashback down memory lane.

Simon looks good with a beard!

  47. birdgherl says:

Oh god the lengths I went to as a Duranie. I could write a book. The new album is nowhere near Rio, not even close. And Simon needs to lose the fur collar – f**cking gross.

  48. JQ says:

Oh hell to the yes! Loooove Duran Duran!

  49. Pauline says:

Excuse me? You listen to ONE song off Duran Duran’s new album and you’re ready to condemn the entire thing?? I hope your readers aren’t as narrow-minded as you. Duran Duran has gone through several changes through the years but they SURVIVED nonetheless. They’re not just an ’80s band, relegated to your feverish bouts of nostalgia.

“All You Need Is Now” (the album) is the BEST work they’ve done in the past two decades (my opinion as a DD fan for 28 years). If ANYONE loved Duran Duran’s first two albums, then I can’t possibly understand how they could dismiss “All You Need Is Now” in one broad stroke. Go to YouTube and actually LISTEN to “Being Followed”, “The Man Who Stole A Leopard”, “Runway Runaway”, “Before The Rain”, “Girl Panic”, “Blame The Machines”, “Leave The Light On”, “Safe (in the heat of the moment)”…and tell me if that’s NOT classic pop craft. Listen to each track (especially the first four I listed) then come back with a proper update of your view of the album. There are elements or flavours from the 80s but it definitely doesn’t sound dated. I’m just so glad the band aren’t Auto-Tuned within an inch of their life like so many of today’s artists!!

Yes, Duran Duran will be touring this year but no official announcement of dates as yet (some rumbling about February and/or May; most likely U.S. tour in late spring or summer). Oh, by the way, did you know that both Simon Le Bon and John Taylor have verified Twitter accounts? Follow “SimonJCLeBON” and “thisistherealJT” for any news updates and/or personal comments.

To all the Duran Duran haters: Ha!

  50. TXCinderella says:

    Simon…yes
    Fur…NO

  51. kwoww says:

i rocked the stone washed jean jacket with all the duran duran pins on it. hell yeah.

  52. Durandy says:

I love seeing this full spectrum of Duran devotion, conjuring such wonderful, personal memories over the band’s storied career. It is an exciting time indeed as the band’s amazing new record makes its imprint on the charts and Duran prepare to move into full promotion mode. All You Need Is Now is a collection of work to be proud of.

As a Duran Duran archivist over two decades, I have cultivated a unique perspective on the band’s storied career. Nothing is so special as hearing the cherished reflections of passionate fans, and of course, seeing DD back in the headlines. The New Year promises to be one to remember.

If anyone might be interested in a little view to a thrill, I invite you to browse a sample of my archive on my website: durandy.com!

All my best for a great year of Duran-demonium!

I disagree too. I also disagree with Mark Ronson if he didnt like “Seven & the Ragged Tiger”. I thought that was brilliantly percussive and atmospheric, not like the tacky run of the mill techno pop of synthised trash that came out at the day. “Seven & the Ragged Tiger” had far more originality than DDs other albums. It even seems abstract. Mark Ronson is so wrong about it. I thought “Seven & the Ragged Tiger” stood out from all that by miles! At 1st I had a crush on John, but I always loved Simon more. At 44yrs old I’m still melting at Simon dreaming of marrying him, I’m terrible! I think Simon’s beard loses him a few years, but he could trim down – he’s getting a bit pudgey. John always seemed too perfect for me & unapproachable to me loving such perfect Bond girl & Revlon beauties, it nearly felt intimidating! I’m so ordinary compared to those girls. I love “All You Need is Now” & its lyrics, its such an immaterialistic song, from ex-punk Simon so unworldly simple & innocent, eg you dont need anything else but now. “Girl Panic” is funny. I love “Too Bad You’re so Beautiful” too.
