Kanye West wanted to get his album artwork banned so he could complain about it

Kanye West
Here’s a completely unsurprising story that I want to repeat just to point out what a whiny little baby Kanye West is. Remember when Kanye West put out that ridiculous album art for “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” that featured a budget semi-nude painting with an evil Kanye character f*cking a phoenix while drinking a bottle of Sprite? It looked straight from Regretsy (credit: DListed) and ended up getting banned – according to Kanye. Kanye twatted about how his artistic genius was being squashed or something, but the “artist” recently admitted that Kanye told him to whip up something that would get banned – presumably just so Kanye could complain about it and earn more headlines.

It was all an act: Kanye West complained in October that the cover of his new album, ‘My Dark Twisted Fantasy,’ was banned (something that was publicly made never official), but it turns out, the controversy was exactly what he wanted.

West’s album’s controversial cover art, which featured a painting of West having sex with a phoenix and drinking, was painted by artist George Condo, who told The New Yorker that West specifically ordered controversy.

Having seen Condon’s paintings, Kanye selected the painter to do the artwork, and as Condo explains it, he wanted, “something that will be banned.”

In October, West angrily tweeted about the “banning,” saying:

In the 70s album covers had actual nudity… It’s so funny that people forget that… Everything has been so commercialized now.

I know that cover just blew yall minds … I wish yall could see how hard I’m smiling right now!!!

In all honesty … I really don’t be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers #Kanyeshrug!

I wanna sell albums but not at the expense of my true creativity.

So Nirvana can have a naked human being on they cover but I can’t have a PAINTING of a monster with no arms and a polka dot tail and wings.

According to that interview with the New Yorker, Kanye reached out this artist, George Condo, and they spent five hours listening to Kanye’s new songs in preparation. Kanye picked the most sensational painting, and of course wasn’t able to use it for the cover. He ended up using Condo’s painting of a ballerina for the album along with a heavily pixelated version of the painting for the other releases.

So here’s the thing – now that we know that Kanye puts himself in these situations so he can drum up controversy and play the victim – how premeditated was his “I’m gonna let you finish” rant? He couldn’t have predicted Taylor Swift would win, but he’s changed his story on that issue so many times that it’s clear he’s milking it for as much publicity as possible. This is what Kanye does – he tries to work everything to his advantage, including his freakouts and outbursts.

(Note that the part about Kanye asking for art that would be banned is not in the audio explanation of the interview on the New Yorker’s website. That must be in the print edition.)

I can think of a dozen artists like Lady Gaga & Marilyn Manson who do this and the idiots and tight asses out there get shocked every time. It’s really kind of funny how predictable it all is. But I have to say his new album is actually good. Sad that he thinks he needs all the controversy.

  2. KatScorp says:

Kanye is such a loser. He has no idea how hard I’m smiling right now… because his faux-artistic bullshit is called out. I get to go to bed happy tonight, because something has gone right in the world. Thanks, CB.

  3. Lenore says:

The only shock here for me is that all this time I honestly thought Kanye painted that picture himself. He actually paid someone for that? Wow.

Not surprising in the least. Conjure up a controversy to try to stay in the headlines…been done a million times.

I’m reminded of a time several years ago in my community where a controversy was manufactured. There was some sort of conflict with some workers, I think at the port (don’t remember all the details). Anyway, 5 of the workers were arrested and taken to jail. Immediately their lawyer started a “Free the Charleston 5” campaign-trying to make it look like these jerks were some sort of working man’s heroes being abused by the system. It was all over the news, bumper stickers were made up, etc. in this big campaign to free these wrongfully detained men. It finally came to an end when the judge on the case said they could have been free at any time-but the lawyer had advised them to stay right where they were for the sake of the publicity machine. No one was holding them against their will.

So irrelavent he has to conjure controversy. Pathetic.

  6. teehee says:

LOL I generally think he is a clueless and extremely biased person, and people who think so incompletely WILL have to bend reality to still think that way. Not everybody is a racist, as he thinks, and not everybody will ban certain types of art, as he thinks, nobody is setting this idiot up, as he thinks, etc. Wonder what will happenb to him when he ever runs out of reasons to have hissy fits and comes to his senses.

  7. cutelittlehappything says:

    I don’t think that’s a phoenix. I think it’s some kind of cross between a griffin and a Lohan.

  8. Obvious says:

can we ban kanye from the world? i mean honestly. i got into a fight with a friend who thinks kanya i the second coming of the beatles/michael jackson/elvis all rolled into one. he can’t see past kanye’s words (and i will admit the dude is good) to see what a fricktard kanye really is.

kanye stirs up controversy, places himself in the middle, and then when people call him on it he whines and cries and goes to “rehab” isn’t that what he did with Taylor? he ended up in rehab and became “a new man”? where is this new man? i’m still waiting.

  9. Should be working says:

Hilarious that people are saying he’s irrelevant (note the correct spelling) and wishing him away. And, oh… all the douche-y, famewhore-y whine rants worked: here he is in ANOTHER mention on another (non-urban!) blog. HA!

*Have you listened to the album? He IS talented (at more than being annoying).

  10. JenJen says:

Is that supposed to be him and Kim K. on the cover? It looks like it might be him she is promoting as her new lay on the new show. Then in a few months maybe she will finally get the spawn she wants and her own show, “K and K’s Payday”.
Yeah Kris should be so proud.

  11. December says:

Do you think he’d like some cheese with his whine?

Oh, and that’s not a phoenix (as I have a huge lower back tattoo of a phoenix). Frankly, whatever that thing is, it’s stupid looking.

  12. original kate says:

maybe kanye should go to a country where people are put in prison for speaking out against their government, or printing a certain book or newspaper, reading certain things, etc. you know, if he really wants to whine about censorship.

    jackass.

  13. Hakura says:

@December (#11) – Oh, and that’s not a phoenix (as I have a huge lower back tattoo of a phoenix). Frankly, whatever that thing is, it’s stupid looking.

I concur. I have a large upper back Phoenix tattoo =)

That monstrosity isn’t a phoenix. It’s a naked woman (possibly Lohan, as CuteLittleHappyThing mentioned) with white wings for arms & a dalmatian’s tail. How the fuck is that a phoenix?

R WE SURE KANYE DIDNT PAINT IT HIMSELF? i dont think iv ever seen “art” so hideous AND stupid looking.
