Kate Middleton likely chose designer Bruce Oldfield for her wedding gown

It’s not anywhere near confirmed, but British gossips are focusing on British designer Bruce Oldfield as Kate Middleton’s pick for her wedding gown. I heard Oldfield’s name mentioned weeks ago, and I tended to discount his name just because he’s been around forever and he isn’t really a remarkable choice. I didn’t think Middleton would go so “safe” for what will be the most important fashion choice of her life. But it’s looking more and more like Oldfield is the pick – I Googled some images of Oldfield’s wedding dresses and… eh. Not full on “meh” as some of the dresses are rather pretty, but it all looks very basic cookie-cutter wedding dress stuff. Lots of strapless, which I sincerely hope Kate doesn’t do. Lots of big skirts, which she probably will do – the bigger the venue (Westminster), the bigger the dress. Oh, well. At least it isn’t Issa and some cheap-looking, figure-hugging silk jersey gown.

It looks like Kate Middleton has made her biggest decision since accepting Prince William‘s marriage proposal. The future princess has picked the designer who will make her wedding dress, a source tells PEOPLE. However, the identity of the couturier with the task of creating the gown that will be poured over by hundreds of millions of people around the world on April 29, remains a secret — as is the couple’s wish.

But was there a clue amid the speculation? Bruce Oldfield‘s name re-entered the mix because Kate’s mom Carole and her sister Pippa were spotted heading to his store in the swanky Knightsbridge area of London. Photos published in the U.K.’s News of the World show mother and daughter strolling in the street and visiting Oldfield’s store after lunching at San Lorenzo restaurant.

The paper said the shopping trip gave “a big hint he’s been picked to design the royal wedding dress.” But no one is confirming. Oldfield’s shop had no comment for PEOPLE, and the palace spokesman says, “It’s Miss Middleton’s intention to keep the dress a secret for her bridegroom on their wedding day, as is every bride’s prerogative.”

Oldfield, a favorite of Princess Diana, has not commented on making a wedding gown for Middleton, but he said in a statement in December, “Kate has such a gorgeous figure that she would look stunning in anything.”

[From People]

So Kate isn’t going to announce her dress designer until the wedding day. Because she wants to surprise William. Because he cares so much about fashion…? Seriously? I mean, I get that you don’t want your future husband to see the dress, but to not even publicly name the designer is a bit weird.

In other Middleton news, did you know that Kate is being “courted” for her first formal fashion magazine editorial and cover? Page Six claims that Harper’s Bazaar is in the running because the editor, Glenda Bailey, is obsessed with getting Kate for an editorial, and because Camilla Parker Bowles’ daughter-in-law works there. But I tend to think that the future Princess of Wales will go with VogueVogue UK, that is. Maybe in a joint venture between Vogue UK and American Vogue. But if Kate is going so boring and traditional with all of her wedding choices, why do a high-fashion editorial with anyone? She might have to actually exert herself, and Kate hates doing that.

She has a boyish figure, no waist or curves, it’s just straight down to the hips, so I think she needs something with a well defined structure.

  2. Athena says:

She will definitely go safe, she has been playing it safe for years and will continue to do so. God this chick is so vanilla. I was really hoping she would really wow them but who am I kidding.

  3. December says:

She kind of reminds me of Katie Holmes for some reason.

Not the fashion part, but just because she seems so boring and meh.

  4. brin says:

Well, since we don’t know anything for sure, I’ll hope for the best & reserve judgement for a later date.

  5. Liana says:

sometimes it’s best to go safe for a major event like a wedding. I’m anything but vanilla most of the time, yet for my wedding, I chose Vera Wang. I wanted to KNOW exactly what I was getting and I wanted it to be boringly traditional.

  6. manda says:

I don’t really care for her fashion choices so far. I know there are certain rules of propriety that she must follow, or will have to follow, I don’t know. But all these dresses are fug, that blue one with the black blazer not too long ago was blah, that black coat thing with the sheer panel was cheese. I do like the coat shown here, though. She just strikes me as someone who wears nude pantyhose.

So, it won’t surprise me if her dress is not very impressive.

But has the Queen Mum approved?

  8. Erica Smith says:

    She has really good hair!

  9. Reality says:

@ Liana, I always thought I’d go with Vera Wang too, her wedding gowns are so lovely and elegant, maybe something vintage inspired.

I’m sure Kate will look beautiful, and I like that she’s letting the dress be a surprise and keeping us guessing. Clever girl.

  10. JulieM says:

Bruce Oldfield would be a safe, well made choice but very uninspiring indeed. A favorite of Diana’s, but please don’t make any comparisons between the two. Diana’s ring, but please don’t make any comparisons between the two. Nice dress, probably, but predictable and boring; just like the wearer. I believe Diana eventually went off Oldfield for some reason.

And I think it’s silly to keep the designer secret until the day. The dress itself, of course, but the designer? Some enterprising journalist or photographer will figure it out. Just another silly game.

I don’t hate kate and I think her fashion taste is pretty good. She can’t look too trendy in her position, and she always looks nicely put together. I’m also starting to think that this “Kate doesn’t do anything” might be orchestrated a bit by the Palace. They let Diana be a media darling and she manipulated the media beautifully, and they don’t want another Diana like that. So the more they keep her in the background, the safer it is.

  13. Fue McCormick says:

@Athena … you nailed it with “vanilla”; this chick is so basic. And I’m still trying to figure out why people think she is so pretty. I’m just not seeing it at all.

  14. kelly says:

Why the fuck does everyone wear white to their wedding?? It’s not even traditional- it’s just a stupid Victorian thing!

Go for broke on your wedding day. Go crazy. I wore a giant blood red French-style court gown for my wedding because NO bitch within 500 miles was going to upstage me. It really pisses off all the people you don’t like but had to invite, and you know they’re all wishing they’d had the guts to wear something badarse instead of the polyester meringue they got stuck with. Ho ho! I spelt meringue right first time. Maturity.

  15. Flipper says:

It will be interesting to see if she stays Vanilla once they are married, she has chosen her style because it ‘fits in’ with ‘The Firms'(royal family’s) image of what William’s wife should be. Her one goal in life since she met him was to get him down the aisle and everything she has done since she was 18 has fed that ambition.

Anyone who really knows anything about Kate’s history knows she is a dedicated social climber, she set a bee-line for William and did absolutely anything he wanted , relentless and utterly committed to winning herself a title.

You can believe in all the fairly tales you like but Kate decided she wanted a title and went for the brass ring, not to say she doesn’t love him but if William was a commoner she wouldn’t have looked twice at him. Climbing the highest rungs of society has always been her main goal.

Her sister is much, much, worse, expect her to snag herself a Duke in the not too distant future. The upper-set (titled society) have a nick-name for them. The Wisteria Sisters – highly decorative, terribly fragrant and with a ferocious ability to climb.

This article from 2007 after her split from William is well worth reading. She thought she had lost William and with her social climbing sister in tow set out to keep herself firmly ensconced in aristocratic circles . On the prowl for a lesser title?

  16. Otherwise says:

I can’t understand why everyone seems to have such a strong opinion of Kate when none of us know her. She seems like a steady, normal girl, quite attractive, and Wills took his time to ensure she’s the right person. If she seems uninvolved charity/career-wise at this point, I think it’s a good thing as we all saw what happened to Diana, who took on wayyyy too much too soon, at too young an age (charities, babies, public life) and learned the hard way that when you’re handed a big role in royal life, it can be a double-edged sword. She had a love/hate relationship with the media and courted their attention like an addict. I think the more Kate stays in the background, quietly developing relationships with worthy charities and starting her family, the better for her and William. Look at Princess Anne – you hardly ever see her in the gutter press but she’s the hardest working royal in the family who does more charity work than any of them. She just refuses to court the press, and they leave her alone to do her job.

Its her Wedding, not ours!! Why do we really need to nail her for her choices???

Let her be herself and let her enjoy what she want.

  18. Heather says:

I wish a makeup artist would sweep into her life and teach her how to use undereye concealer, and how to properly line her eyes. Her eyeliner is always so harsh and 80’s looking…..

  19. B says:

    Who cares? Geeze…it’s her wedding…

  20. Richi says:

@-December! u r so right! i think of Katie Holmes to for “MEH” part!!! i really wonder if she actually loves William….

  21. MoMo says:

I have never seen a British Royal bride that didn’t have her shoulders covered. I assumed it had something to do with proper etiquette for the Church or for the Monarchy or something.

  22. eternalcanadian says:

That’s too bad. I checked out Oldfield’s website to see what kind of wedding gowns he does and they’re all so boring, even the custom designed ones. Catherine should have plucked a young British designer who could have put together a smashing frock deserving of a young bride (she’s 29, not 49).

  23. Raven says:

I’m with bluhare on the fashion choice. She has always been pretty conservative in all her choices probably because she doesn’t want to embarrass William or have a dustup with the Royals. Not everyone is a fashion plate or wants to be one, especially those keeping their eyes on the prize.

As far as surprise, Kate may be able to save the dress as a surprise, but the designer will likely be leaked and will, no doubt, have the imprimatur of the palace (which is where the leak will probably come from.) Thus, expect a more established and, maybe, conservative designer.

Kate may end up being the royal equivalent of Pat Nixon. I’m showing my age here, but I remember the Nixon speech where he talked about Pat and her sensible wool coat rather than flaunting furs. I thought of that today when I read the thread.

Many thanks for taking the time to examine this, I feel strongly about it and really like learning more on this topic. If probable, while you gain knowledge, would you thoughts updating your blog site with far more info? It can be really beneficial for me.

I love the white dress that she is wearing in the first picture of the article. Is gorgeous!!!

  26. There are certainly numerous details like that to take into consideration. http://www.kendonleet.com That could be a nice point to bring up. I offer the ideas above as basic inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you deliver up where the most important factor will likely be working in trustworthy good faith. I don?t know if greatest practices have emerged round issues like that, but I am positive that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game. Both girls and boys feel the affect of just a second’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.

  27. I’m impressed, I need to say. Really rarely do I encounter a weblog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me inform you, you’ve gotten hit the nail on the head. http://www.vipappliancerepair.com Your concept is outstanding; the problem is one thing that not enough individuals are talking intelligently about. I’m very completely happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
