Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Garner top the most overpaid movie stars list

Forbes did the math and compared celebrity salaries to studio return on investment. In many cases it’s not the celebrities’ faults that their movies failed at the box office, although it may speak to their need to pick better films in the future – or ask for a salary that’s tied to box office take, which isn’t going to happen. First on the list is Nicole Kidman, but she also lands at the top of “quickest return to pre-baby weight” ranking, so maybe it balances out for her.

1. Nicole Kidman

Kidman has an Oscar and earns $15 million paydays, but she’s proved to offer a poor return on investment. Despite bringing in $370 million in worldwide box office, The Golden Compass only grossed $3.36 for every dollar Kidman was paid. The Invasion lost $2.68 for every dollar that went to Kidman. She has a chance for a high-profile comeback with this fall’s epic Australia, which could earn the Aussie her third best actress nomination.

For every dollar she was paid, Nicole Kidman’s movies averaged $1 of gross income.

2. Jennifer Garner

Garner has stayed fairly under the radar since her 2005 big-budget disaster Elektra, which cost $40 million to make and earned only $56 million worldwide. Unfortunately for Garner her follow-up films didn’t do much better. Both Catch and Release and The Kingdom underperformed at the box office.

For every dollar she was paid, Jennifer Garner’s movies averaged $3.60 of gross income.

3. Tom Cruise

His recent cameo as a foul-mouthed studio exec in Tropic Thunder is earning raves and might usher in the era of Tom Cruise comedies. In the meantime, Cruise has to deal with the fallout from his recent dramatic blunder, Lions for Lambs. The film’s box office ($63 million worldwide) was bad enough that even without taking any upfront pay Cruise still earned the movie only $1.88 for every dollar he was paid.

For every dollar he was paid, Tom Cruise’s movies averaged $4 of gross income.

4. Cameron Diaz

The highest paid actress in Hollywood, Diaz pulled in $50 million last year. But her high salary makes it hard for the romantic comedies she stars in to earn a good return. The Holiday brought in $205 million worldwide but Diaz’s high payday meant the film only grossed $3.70 for every dollar Diaz was paid.

For every dollar she was paid, Cameron Diaz’s movies averaged $4 of gross income.

5. Jennifer Lopez

The singer/actress/designer has struggled at the box office for the past few years, choosing small projects like 2006’s El Cantante, a low-budget musical biopic starring her husband Marc Anthony, which barely registered at the box office. Her last big film was 2005’s Monster-in-Law, which grossed $155 million worldwide returning $6.85 for every dollar Lopez was paid.

For every dollar she was paid, Jennifer Lopez’s movies averaged $4.10 of gross income.

Rounding out the list are Jim Carrey at a $4.11 return, Nicolas Cage $4.16, Drew Barrymore $4.38, Will Ferrell $4.67, and Cate Blanchett at $4.97.

Forbes notes that actors who command less than $10 million a picture are usually a better return on investment except for poor Jennifer Garner. She had two big films, The Kingdom and Catch and Release, that pretty much tanked at the box office last year and dragged her down. Russell Crowe was named the most improved with a return of $6.88 per dollar. That’s mainly due to his hit American Gangster. It looks like one big blockbuster can make all the difference. Will Australia be the film that brings Kidman back in the black for her employers? We’ll have to see.

I don’t know everything about Hollywood, but please. They all try to portray themselves as “down to earth” yet they command to make more than they can earn for the studio? If they really cared so much about humanity, they would take into account that the studio has to pay the caterers, the janitors, the camera guys, etc. I think it’s ridiculous that the studios even agree to it!!! The celebs need to manage their money better instead of biting off more they can chew!

  2. Enonymous says:

I am surprised that Bradangelina are not in that list. All actors make more money then they are worth so as far as I am concerned, they all should be in that list.

  3. daisy424 says:

I would spend my movie dollar to see Hugh Jackman in ‘Australia’, not Nicole.

I think Tommy is better in comedies, Risky Business is my favorite TC film.
Sometimes you just gotta say, WTF 🙂

*edit, speaking of lip injections, have any of you seen the pics of Jen Garner when she was younger? I saw a side by side, she had work done on her top lip.

  4. Syko says:

The thing that sticks in my mind most here is “Tom Cruise comedies.” I’m sorry, but I can’t find anything laughable about this mini-man.

And I’m totally with you on “Australia”, Daisy. Yummy Hugh Jackman!

  5. bros says:

TC in tropic thunder was pretty dang funny, I have to admit.

nicole is seriously a waste of money though (as is jen garner-snooze)
I just saw an add for omega watches in this month’s vanity fair with kidman and i COULD NOT believe how enormous her lips were. so different from 10 years ago. lay off the fillers nicole!

  6. elisha says:

Tom Cruise was one of the best parts about Tropic Thunder. Very funny. I also like him in action/sci fi like Minority Report.

  7. Celebitchy says:

Tom Cruise rocked in Tropic Thunder. He really should do more comedies. And I’m not a fan, but he was great in that movie.

  8. CiCi says:

while i do believe that jen garner has had a little work done to her top lip, her lips have always been kinda full and pouty from day one. regardless, jen is still one of the most natural looking ones out there. i love her! and that pic of her in the post is so pretty.

  9. Codzilla says:

Daisy/Syko: I’m with you in regards to Hugh. He puts all those over-plucked, fake-tanned Hollywood girly men to shame.

  10. Kaiser says:

Yeah, I avoid Kidman, Diaz and Lopez movies like the plague. All three made a few good movies in their early careers, but then they all started making horrible films – Bewitched? Monster-in-law? Blech.

The Jen Garner thing is a little surprising – I guess she doesn’t get credit for the success of Juno. Weird. She’s the one actress on the list who will probably be making more money in the years to come – unlike the other girls.

And people don’t hire Cate Blanchett because they want box office. They hire her because they want to work with the best actress of her generation.

And Cruise? I rented Lions for Lambs and I couldn’t even finish watching it – I turned it off after a half-hour, and I never do that. Horrible.

Did Forbes include a list of “underpaid” actors too?

YIKES daisy!! I’m glad she did get work done on that lip! Geez, she’s a bit gummy in the before photo 😆

  13. vdantev says:

Hey, but the news isn’t all bad, the good news is Jennifer Garner beats Nicole Kidman in the ginormous forehead department.

Tom Cruise is in Tropic Thunder? Now I’ll definitely avoid it. No money for Scientologists or their movies. Ever.

  14. stellapurdy says:

okay, I’m scarred for life after visiting that celebrity plastic surgery site 😯

Did you check out catman? WTF????

  15. lanette says:

Nicole Kidman is a good actress…..

  16. Tricia says:

I’m not surprised that Nicole Kidman tops this list, but I would have thought Cameron Diaz belonged right under her.

However, I’ve always thought Jennifer Garner was overhyped. Just what has she done that’s so great? 13 Going on 30 is a preteen girl’s dream, so of course it would do well.

Nothing else she’s done (that she carried) has done well. Let’s face it, people watched Juno for Ellen Page, not Jennifer Garner. And she didn’t broaden the appeal for The Kingdom at all.

If she hadn’t married Ben Affleck and had her kid, we wouldn’t care what she was doing today.

  17. Carena says:

Glad to hear I’m not the only one that avoids movies staring Scientologists. I’m not supporting that wacko cult.

  18. Codzilla says:

Holy shite, Jen’s upper lip was essentially nonexistent! She kind of looks like a shark about to attack some poor critter.

  19. John says:

Nicole Kidman is only where she is today because of her e-husband, Tom Cruz. She has always been overpaid in my book. What a waste to fork out millions for her to star in a movie. Maybe hollywood has woke up and now sees Kidman for what she really is. At best Kidman is a C- actress and that is pushing it in my opinion. If she never plays in another movie it will not hurt my feeling at all.

  20. John says:

Jennnifer Garner should be paid millions to star in movies. She is one of the hottest hollywood actresses out there yet hollywood doesn’t recognize her for the real talent she is. Come on hollywood don’t wate your time on untalented actresses like cameron Diaz and Nicole Kidman, put Jennifer Garner out there and give her the opportunites she so much deserves.

  21. yikes says:

Jennifer Aniston should be on the list.

  22. yikes says:

hmm why is it when something not flaterring is said about JA it is being moderated???

  23. Oh duhh says:

hmmm really.. JENNIFER ANISTON SHOULD BE ON THAT LIST.

  24. Rosy J says:

I couldn’t agree more with John at 2:34 Jennifer Garner is a fantastic actress with talent worthy of earning her an academy award. I’d love to see her in such a role.

  25. Rosy J says:

I would like to respectly disagree with the statement that Jennifer Garner has had any augmentation done on her lip. To prove my point, I challenge anyone to go before a mirror and smile as big as she is doing in that first photo and see if your top lip doesn’t disappear. Her lips are naturally full. It’s in her DNA, her mom, sisters and even her baby girl have them.

  26. whatevs says:

I’ve always been pretty indifferent when it comes to Nicole Kidman, but I watched “The Golden Compass” the other night and thought she was great. She was also good in “Margot At The Wedding” and “My Life”. I still can’t believe she gets paid as much as she does, but at least she’s able to pull off different characters.

WTF happened to Cameron Diaz? She used to be so pretty, but now she’s starting to look like Skeletor. Oh, and thanks for that link, Daisy. I spent about a half hour on that site!

  27. Rick says:

Oh, come on, Nicole Kidman has talent- she actually deserved her Oscar! The problem is that she has too much of the ice-queen thing going on- and truthfully, movies today are written for CGI spectacles, not people who can actually act.

Jennifer Garner is hot according to who? I like women who look like women- not flat-chested, no waist, no hip she-men like Garner. In the dark, you probably can’t tell the difference between her and Ben.

  28. Jupiter Girl says:

Those statistics are silly. Cameron Diaz is box office promise..Lions for Lambs did well, and Jennifer Garner is hollywoods sweetheart. Although, Invasion didnt do well in theaters..it was actually a great movie ❗ Its not Kidmans fault that the film wasnt advertised properly.

  29. Jeanne says:

No surprises here. Is Jack Black on the list?
