Barbra Streisand sort-of disses Glee and then backtracks

When Barbra Streisand was asked if she’d ever be on that high school musical show, Glee, she was all “not if I can help it,” which is all sorts of awesome. Instead of letting her snarky comment stand on it’s own, she backtracked and said that she really meant that she was just so busy she couldn’t do the show but of course she’s flattered that Lea Michele copies her, etc. I know when I’m overwhelmed with work I bust out the bitchy comments that are meant in all innocence.

At the pre-Grammy MusiCares event Friday night, Streisand was asked if she would ever consider doing an episode of Glee and replied, “Not if I can help it. ” Needless to say, Gleeks went apoplectic (especially considering show star and professed Streisand fan Lea Michele performed a tribute to Streisand that night).

Now Streisand is doing a quick backpedal clarification…

“When asked if I would ever appear on Glee, I should have said, ‘You never know.’ It was wrong to say, “Not if I can help it,” Streisand said Sunday in a statement to E! News.

“What I meant was that I’ve been overwhelmed preparing for my performance on MusiCares, the Grammys, recording a new album, and starting a new movie. So I couldn’t take on any more work, and besides that, I wasn’t asked. I’m so honored that a lead character on Glee is so admiring of my work. In my speech at MusiCares, I thanked them ‘for exposing young people to music they might otherwise not hear today: Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and Darren Criss…you’re all so gifted.’

[From E! Online]

That’s a bogus explanation. You don’t say “not if I can help it” if you’re busy, you say if if you don’t want to be associated with something. Barbra realizes that Ryan Murphy is a formidable opponent and that there are young kids on that show who are hardworking and talented, so she’s not going to let her comment stand like that. I guess I can’t blame her but I’d like to see Ryan Murphy try and get in a bitch fight with Babs. He would end up slinking away with his tail between his leg.

Let fading stars like Goop go on Glee and get their mack on with Matthew Morrison. Barbra doesn’t make guest appearances. She gets honored without showing up most of the time. Plus I think Glee jumped the shark with that zombie episode on Superbowl Sunday. I really do. They tried to parody themselves but just made us realize how pointless the show is most of the time.

Barbra Streisand and James Brolin are shown at that Musicares tribute to Babs on 2/11/11. Lea Michele and her pose hard are shown there too. Credit: WENN.com

  3. PrettyTarheel says:

I forget Babs is Diane Lane’s MIL. Weird.

  4. clorismetchum says:

    GOD. their NOSES.
you could fit a whole family of immigrants into those things! someone, send babs and lea to the border! we finally found a use for them!

  5. bored_and_hungry says:

NO! Darn it Barbra don’t backtrack! This is worse than when Martha Stewart dissed Rachel Ray and then pretended to take it back. Don’t apologize because you’re better than them. Goshdarnit, I’m going to go watch Funny Girl to calm down.

  6. England Rocks says:

I gave up on Glee a while ago, sad. Its become pointless – no plot, storyline etc.

I’ll never give up on Fanny Brice.

  7. Anyaberry says:

Carefull, Barbara. Ryan Murphy may get upset again. Tell you to f#*%$ off, call his show the most important thing that had ever happen to mankind, that sort of thing.

  8. Marjalane says:

I love Barbra, but after last night I’m thinking it’s time for her to let her past stand on its own. Screw Glee- I’m so over their tired, smug attitude. They lost it after the first season.

  9. Sandy says:

Babs is a bitch. its true but none of these silly little broads can touch her.

  10. KateNonymous says:

I never liked Glee. Bring it on, Ryan Murphy!

But I would understand why Barbra might not want to deal with both Murphy and the South Park guys.

  11. renai(jrt) says:

Babs…they need you over in Israel right about now….. you need to go defend you people and take down the Muslim brotherhood once and for all…

  12. renai(jrt) says:

never watch a day of Glee and dont plan on it…

  13. Katie says:

I’m so glad to know I wasn’t the only person who thought the Zombie thing was incredibly, ricidously stupid.

Although I love the song “She’s Not There.” I was surprised they used it.

  14. Delta Juliet says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Lea Michelle is no where’s as attractive as SHE thinks she is.

And what the hell. If you can’t say what you really think when you are Barbra freakin’ STREISAND, who can?

  15. Zelda says:

So “I just smelled a fart” is Lea Michelle’s new look, then?

  16. Sassy says:

Anyone else think that Barbra has had some facial tweaking. Sorry, but it doesn’t help much. She looks like a man wearing a wig. Meow! Tried Glee 2 times. A waste of time. I don’t get the popularity either.

  17. coexxi says:

I don’t like Lea Michelle and I think Glee lost it pretty fast…. but the noses… I admire the women in Hollywood who allow themselves to stay natural (to a certain degree at least).

  18. Hautie says:

The first season of Glee was divine. And worth watching.

It actually was a show with a weekly plot that had musical numbers scatter in.

Now it is one big music video. There is no more legit storyline.

I am curious what the ratio of spoken lines/dialog versus singing.

I bet it is maybe 25/75.

It has turned into a show where the dialog is only there to introduce another music number.

And I will forever love Barbra for being snarky about it.

  19. Abby says:

OK, I love Glee. It’s my favorite show. But this is hilarious. Barbra will always be THE diva.

She shouldn’t have taken that back, cause it’s awesome. I agree with the poster who compared this to the Martha/Rachel Ray scandal.

  20. TeeTee says:

she sucked out all of James’s sexiness.

    like a damn sponge. smdh

  21. TXCinderella says:

Babs should fire whoever does her hair color!

  22. Feebee says:

Just because you’re a talented diva doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to let your raging bitch out – unless you back it up. She should have owned the comment. Well, she shouldn’t have said it in the first place, I mean why bother dissing Glee? But since she did her backtrack was lame. All she needed to say was Glee has it’s place but it’s not for her, she’s a far too big a star with a totally different audience to that of Glee, but thanks for thinking Ryan would be interested. Own the dismissal.

  23. aha says:

on its own, not “on it’s own”

  24. Zelda says:

    @TeeTee
    She did, right?!
He used to be a rugged silver fox–he now looks like an overdone Palm Beach queen…

Also, despite hating her and Glee, I just realised that Lea Michelle’s dress is the tops.

  25. renai(jrt) says:

it looks like babs tells the hair person to get rid of some of the grey but keep some of it for feminist/liberals sake. if you are going to get some color babs then make it count…

and she shouldnt be wearing all that Liz T. jewelery to bring attention to her fat cleavage… not a good thing…

  26. lola lola3 says:

PLEASE Barbra! Don’t EVER do an episode of Glee! You are too good for that.

  27. MrsOdie2 says:

    @ Maud, I’m with you.

When you have singing voices like Barbra and that twit from Glee, you can’t have a nose job and risk ruining your voice. The nose has so much to do with how the voice sounds.

  28. Remote Control says:

I prefer big noses to the chopped off turds that so many actors sport on their faces.

  29. Crittle says:

Ha! Please RM say something! Accuse her not supporting the arts or whatever. Oh the hell that would be unleashed on him. She shouldn’t have backtracked

  30. Fi says:

Well…I must say I disliked the Super Bowl episode myself. But then they went on and delivered one of the best episodes ever. I’m sticking with Glee.

  31. HonestSally says:

You guys, this is ridiculous. Barbra meant what she said, I’m sure she is okay with Glee and it’s stars…it’s the reporter who asked her an inane question that is most annoying (to everyone!)

I mean she is Barbra Streisand, she is a legend and more or less retired except for the occasional project and movie. He or she shouldn’t have asked her if she would like to appear on the show as if she were a fangirl or upcoming starlet. That’s where they went wrong. I don’t get why every reporter’s go to question is always what is trendy. Are they afraid to ask simple questions that truly pertain to the specific person? That’s why we get inundated with references to Twilight, Glee and whatever else is big.

Again, Barbra complimented them at MusiCares and has been busy and the question was just stupid.

I still like Glee and it may get back on track soon. They just shouldn’t let Gwyneth P guest star anymore!

  32. Tara says:

Glee trumps Streisand? The world IS ending in 2012….

  33. jemshoes says:

Maybe it wasn’t Barbara Streisand herself who backtracked, but her PR / team of PR people who forced her to? I bet there’s few (if any) people in Hollywood she’s afraid to cross!

  34. whitedaisy says:

That Lea Michele is going to jump the track when she is no longer invited to openings. She seems a bit too pleased with herself, and not in a good way.

  35. Maritza says:

Barbra Streisand and James Brolin look so good and happy together. I really thought these two would have gotten divorced long time ago with her temper and all but it’s great that they are still together.

  36. Liana says:

Good Lord, Glee is not the center of the universe. There is only one sun and it is me.

  37. JulieM says:

Once again, I totally agree with the comments above about nose jobs for vocalists. You cannot change your nose without running the risk of changing your voice. It is vocal physiology 101. That is why Barbra never had one and that is why Lea will not have one. If she’s smart, that is.

Barbra meant what she said the first time. No need to justify it, she’s right. Bitchy, but right. Why would she care what Ryan Murphy thinks? Lea Michele is a legend in her own mind. A lovely voice, but NOT Barbra.

  38. gabs says:

Why is Babs backtracking?!? NO! I wish she had owned it. I liked the 1st season. 2nd season jumped the shark. No story, no depth. lame
