David Gest says he regrets having plastic surgery

Sometimes it takes celebs a shockingly long time to figure out relatively obvious stuff. Okay to be fair, sometimes it takes me a really long time too. But I don’t splash my face all over the tabloids (much as I try, they keep ignoring me), so I can at least keep my stupidity to myself. Mostly. Although it took him a hell of a long time to get to the realization, David Gest, perpetually surprised ex-husband of Liza Minnelli, admits he regrets his decision to go under the knife. Though I’m guessing it’s more like knives.

David Gest regrets going under the knife. The reality star had a nose job, facelift, cheek implants and was given a cleft chin in 1981.

‘I’ve never thought of myself as handsome,’ he says. ‘I can’t bear to look in the mirror. I was an idiot to have plastic surgery – there was nothing wrong with my nose. But nobody could have stopped me at the time. I was a foolish kid.’

David, now 55, says appearing on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! in 2006 helped him accept his appearance.

‘It is the best thing I ever did,’ he says. ‘I finally realised that people liked me. I guess people saw the real me and realised I wasn’t just a freak in sunglasses. I get mobbed in the street by fans now. It’s crazy, but I love it.’

[From Now Magazine]

Oh where to start. First off – and this part isn’t David’s fault – cosmetic surgery done 27 years ago probably isn’t going to look as good as it would if it were done today. Technology is significantly more advanced in that field. So I kind of feel badly for the guy. Right now I’m reading a book called Beauty Junkies about the overemphasis we place on cosmetic surgery in America, and it talks about some of the things people used to get injected with. Scary stuff. I don’t even want to imagine what’s floating under that guy’s head.

All that said… it’s been awhile, perhaps it’s time for some touch up work. I understand being afraid after being made to look like… I don’t even know what to compare Gest to. A sleepy Michael Jackson? But I would think there’s some way a really good surgeon could correct some of his facial features. The most obvious being the perma-surprised brow. I don’t think anything else is so gasp-worthy on him, and it really leaves an impression. And while it’s nice that he feels better about himself… I’m going to have to argue with the whole idea that people mob David Gest on the street. I mean I do, but I have a lot of questions for him. Most times he just looks surprised and runs away.

Yeah, I was kinda wondering which time did he regret. I can’t believe that’s not his natural nose as in he actually paid for that one? A touch up may help but really there’s a chance it could get worse.

  2. Codzilla says:

His eyes are all sorts of f*cked up.

  3. JayBird says:

I thought about it making it worse, but what has he got to lose? At this point he just looks like a parrot. Is his life going to suck significantly more if he looks like an aardvark?

  4. Granger says:

I can’t believe he’s only 55! He looks much older than that to me. No wonder he regrets the surgery. If he’d waited, he might actually look his age now, and then maybe a simple peel would have made him feel younger.

  5. Orangejulius says:

Yeah, he paid for that? What did he look like before?

  6. Amy says:

So, will he finally realize he’s gay once he hits 80?

This is one of those instances where I don’t believe the ‘buyer beware’ principle applies.

People have plastic surgery quite rightly believing that it will improve their appearance because that is what it is supposed to do! It costs a crap load of money and is supposedly performed by highly skilled and trained individuals. If he had procedures that he didn’t need or were performed improperly then I believe its his surgeon’s responsibility for not counselling him properly. Plastic surgeons need to be more accountable and circumspect about the operations they perform. However my feeling is the profession attracts a lot of operators who are in it for the $$.

What a strange looking man, and why is he still considered a celeb? He’d be perfect in a creepy horror flick though; he’s got that look.

  9. Leandra says:

He was married to Liza Minelli for a few months which I guess is why he’s famous. BTW I think the nose job failed.

  10. Mrs.Ezc says:

Ugh .. he paid to look like this??? Wow .. regrets it .. hmm wasn’t this the look he was going for???

  11. Apres Ski says:

Where are the before & after photos? How do we know if his face is really screwed up . . . along with his personality?

  12. rules says:

I have to say, this is probably the best picture of him I have ever seen, normally he looks much worse.

  13. Codzilla says:

rules: You’re right, actually. I remember in the Liza days he was even more monstrous. Maybe it’s the facial hair?

  14. gg says:

rules is right. He’s looked waaaaaay worse than this. This just looks like Gene Simmons’ “before” photo.

Anyway, a) no blimmin way he’s 55. LMAO. b) the nose looks awful and I can’t imagine it looked much worse before. c) he gets his chin done only to grow a beard??

  15. Mark says:

I bet he regrets his marriage to Liza more.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. I just watched a show on BBC, where Gest is looking for a new home. I found him to be funny and warm. Who has ever completely loved the way they look. Who at one time or another would not fix at least one thing in their looks if they could. It would suck for anyone to get a crap job. I think it is sad that he thought he needed anything done. I myself would love to meet him and spend the day getting to know more of the inside of Gest. I bet it would be a really fun day filled with laughter.
Signed I am a good looking person naturally. But I am after personality.
