Kelly Osbourne’s new Material Girl ads: adorable or boring?

ko1

These are the new, just-released ads for Madonna and Lourdes’s Material Girl line for Macy’s, starring none other than Kelly Osbourne. Our beloved Raccoon McPantless was fired from the Material Girl modeling gig last month, with Kelly announced as the replacement almost immediately. I have to admit, I bitched and moaned about Kelly fronting a campaign like this – I thought it was a stupid choice, considering it’s a juniors line, and Kelly is simply a weird pick as a model. But… these ads are kind of cute. Kelly looks… kind of adorable. Sorry for the weird cropping on these ads, by the way – I detest Just Jared’s watermark, so I crop around it. Still, you can get the gist of the ads.

In her ads as the new face of Madonna and daughter Lourdes Leon’s clothing line, Material Girl, Kelly Osbourne is showing off her colorful side — and both Kelly and Lourdes are talking to PEOPLE about their fashion favorites for the upcoming spring season.

“The military jacket. I love that and I put it with a bunch of badges on it to make it my own, too,” Leon said recently, whereas Osbourne points to the accessories.

“The shoes–there’s a pair of nude heels that I’m really obsessed with,” Osbourne gushed. “There’s so much stuff in it that’s so me and what I wear. There’s a leopard dress that I get to wear next that I’m excited about. I love prints,” she said.

When it comes to clothes for warmer weather, it’s shorts for spring that are all the rage for the girls.

“I’m like obsessed with them,” said Lourdes. But one of the greatest things about the line, Osbourne observes, is that it’s accessible to everyone. “There’s not many other companies besides Material Girl that do clothes at an affordable price that are high fashion and [are] what people see in the magazines and can emulate themselves without having to go and spend $1000 on a dress,” she said.

And one of the most important aspects of the line for 14 year old Lourdes was making sure that other girls her age could buy great clothes without breaking the bank.

“I don’t go out and buy all of these expensive [clothes]…so it’s good for my friends. It’s good for everybody and it’s good clothing, too.”

[From People]

I think it works with Kelly because she is rather girlish and gushy, like Lola. Kelly and Lola sound like they’re at the same level of maturity – like Lola is too mature and Kelly is too immature. Raccoon McPantless failed because she’s 17-going-on-44, with a smoker’s rasp and no pants. Raccoon also looked like a sellout, where Kellly doesn’t really have anything to “sell out”. I also think Kelly works as the face of the campaign because she’s NOT some fashion-y waif – she’s accessible, she’s a bit silly, and she’s having fun. Which ends up working for a juniors line.

  1. Sparkly says:

Surprisingly, I like the last one. Kelly’s looking good though. Good for her.

  2. malachais says:

Her face looks odd on all of these pictures. She should have looked away from the camera or something. Overall not terrible.

  3. Nancy says:

    Cute stuff!

  4. Bunny says:

I think kelly looks good in the floral dress.

  5. DGO says:

Boring. Does she have only one facial expression?

  6. Stef says:

I think she’s come a long way and while these pictures aren’t the most artistically attractive things I’ve ever seen, I MUCH prefer her to Racoon eyes McPantless for Material Girl. Kelly is a cutie and she’s really done a lot to better herself I think. I like her.

  7. Quest says:

It’s 50/50 for me on Kelly, but she has come a long way. I give her credit and the ads aren’t bad

  8. brin says:

I agree…she looks much better than I thought she would.

  9. Roma says:

Wow. Kelly actually looks great here.

I never would have believed I’d say that about Kelly and Paris on the same day.

  10. Pont Neuf says:

The clothes are simply HORRENDOUS, even for the 10-to-15 year old market to which they seem to be oriented. Hideous 50’s rip offs with prints that not even a colour blind stripper would decide to clash together. Apparently, Lourdes Maria, or whatever her name is, has inherited her mother’s utterly awful taste.

With that said, it’s good that Kelly has finally found something to do, other than speaking badly about people who are better than both her family and her (about 99.99% of humanity fits that profile, so there’s no merit there), and using daddy’s name to appear in the media for nothing.

  11. Riley says:

I like how Kelly has matured and she does seem to be taking care of herself, but she is an odd choice for a juniors line. She is closer to 30 than she will ever be to 21. I guess there are not a lot of recognizable young women to choose from. Lola probably thinks Selena Gomez is cheesy and Demi Lavato was in rehab. There is Ashley Greene but she is dating a JoBro and Lola probably hates the JoBros. So I guess Kelly may be a good choice for the job. I bet Mama Kardashian was trying to push her youngest daughters for the job.

  12. nanster says:

I can’t help but like Kelly. And she looks really great in these photos.

  13. Novaraen says:

That head tilt of hers in every picture is working to help that unfortunate jawline of hers. Good for her though…I like that ads. 🙂

  14. KB_explosion says:

her blond hair in real life is horrible. it is literally ALL i can think about when i see red carpet pics of her. yet, somehow, in these pictures i like how it looks. i don’t think blonde is a bad choice for her in general, i just think she needs to go a little less golden yellow, and more ashy. then again, she’d look great as a light brunette. i’m glad she’s in this campaign, it totally works!

now gimme those black shorts (1st pic) and jumper dress (last pic) please and thank you.

  15. k says:

cute. reminds me of old candies ads

  16. bluhare says:

I think she looks great. Who would have thought that the chubby girl on The Osbournes would turn out so well? And, man, does she look like her mother.

    Go Kelly!!!

  17. MourningTheDeathofMusic says:

Anyone else knoticing the odd angle of her leg in the side shot photo with her back against the wall?

OUCH! That shit looks broke! That has got to be some bad photoshop editing.

  18. Alexa says:

AWESOME! That last pic is super sexy! (Sizzliiiin’ Kelly Girl!)

  19. hatsumomo says:

The clothes look cheap, like alot cheap. unless you were bone-thin and\or on a coke diet there is just no way these clothes would look feasibly possible on a real person. and Kelly Osbourne just sucks, she gets on my last nerve when i look at her.

  20. liz says:

“Created by the original cover girl Madonna” – ha, sure, M, whatever tag helps Lourdes out.

  21. carrie says:

in France, there is a cheap girly wear compagny JENNIFER who sells the same clothes

  22. mimi says:

I wouldn’t be caught dead in any of those clothes and I think it’s being marketed for my age range (early 20’s?). Kelly looks stiff? disgusted?…I don’t know

  23. Bailey says:

DGO – you are right, she only has one facial expression.
maybe she should work on a blue steel, le tigre and magnum faces.
but it really doesn’t matter because the clothes are a joke.

  24. annaloo says:

She looks great, but rest assured, her image was photoshopped to some degree.. great pics.. good for her public image. and DEFINITE IMPROVEMENT over that last model, the Raccoon..gah, what was her name?

  25. She looks beautiful! It’s not necessarily about the weight loss as much as it is that she exudes more confidence and seems happy. Lovely photos.

  26. harfang says:

I think this is totally viable. She is quite airbrushed — her body is more voluptuous than that, including her limbs — but her face looks natural enough, and I happen to like her. On Fashion Police she acquits herself quite well.

  27. melinda says:

Kelly is too old to dress like this and market clothes for teens.

  28. Kat says:

Kelly looks adorable. Such a better choice than Raccoon McPantless

  29. Zelda says:

I think she’s too old for the clothes, but that’s only because I know how old she actually IS, I suppose.

I dig that checkered head wrap though. That’s cute.

  30. lettylynton says:

I think Kelly looks good, but I agree, the look is a little young for her. I think Taylor Momsen sold it better. I saw her band last weekend and they were great (and she wore pants). Hopefully she’s focusing more on her music than modeling.

  31. Laura says:

I’m actually pleasantly surprised! I think the pics look great, better than Raccoon’s.

  32. Saskia says:

Y’all, she has no choice but to do the head tilt in every single photo on account of how she’s cranio-facially challenged.

Seriously though, these are pretty cute. The clothes aren’t even that bad, for juniors stuff. I’ve got two pre-teen nieces and most juniors clothes are FUGLY AS HELL and almost always cheaply made. As for Kelly Osbourne, I don’t hate her. I think her hair is usually very unfortunate (although looks much better here than in candid photos) and I think she looks a hot mess when she dresses herself so I don’t understand how she ended up a fashion cop or whatever. That said, she seems generally harmless and though I’ve only seen that fashion show she does a couple of times, she came across rather sweet.

But maybe I’m being super lenient because I can imagine the nightmare of this ad campaign with McPantless. The emo whoriness would’ve been so epic.

  33. Jayna says:

She is so much prettier with brown hair. She’s too old for this line. I know Madonna doesn’t want Lola as the face of it while she’s so young, but that’s really who should be. It’s Lola’s style and that style clothes really look great on Lola, who has a young freshness but retro club edge to her style when she wears clothes.

The photos aren’t bad at all but I don’t get why they chose her. It baffles me. It’s a teen line.

  34. Lady Jane says:

Kelly looks a lot like Jessica Simpson’s square-faced, older sister. Not such a smoking look…

  35. Ell says:

    They’re not very realistic, over-photoshopped.

I used to like Kelly until she started mouthing off about Dannii Minogue, very unnecessary. Kelly’s too much like Sharon these days, a chip off the old block.

  36. Racheal says:

I like Kelly. She’s had her struggles, and she’s coming out the better for it. Good for her.

  37. Should be working says:

    BARF!

  38. anonymous says:

Yes she looks lovely! this girls full of confidence and doesn’t care what other people think, which i guess is what Madonna was always about so shes picked the right person.

good for you girl! Shes not a 6 foot tall 0 runway model and these are moderately priced affordable clothes for young girls sold at Macys which is what most people are looking for these days, affordability. Even if it doesn’t sell it’s not like its gonna hurt Madonnas pocket its just another business venture she can mark off the list, atleast shes the only female celebrity out there who hasn’t put out a fragrance YET which is pretty surprising. I guess that would be too cliche’ for her since everyones already done it.

  39. devilgirl says:

She is definitely NOT a model, and they photoshopped the hell out of those pictures. Her face has never been that small and it still looks HUGE!

  40. I Choose Me says:

I like the first and the last pics. She looks really good here. They got some good angles and played up her best features.

  41. Debsa says:

    Very cute…

  42. womanfromthenorth says:

    Go Kelly… looks great!

  43. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

@saskia, “she’s cranio-facially challenged.” LOL. Nicely put, mind if I find a way to work it into my vocabulary?

Kelly is a big step up from Momson, but why doesn’t Lourdes try her hand at modeling?

  44. Maritza says:

    She looks really cute!

  45. lisa says:

    I think she looks cute..

and regarding being too old.. we see women way older then her dressing way younger than their years.

She can pull it off. No different then the Glee cast pretending to be tweens..

  46. Patricia says:

I just can’t get out of my head that she is a woman nearing 30, yet she is dressing like a 15-20 yr old girl in these ads. (huh?)

Sorry but you can’t sell me on it when it just does not compute.

I also can’t get past that she looks very much like Madonna (and nothing like Lourdes) in these ads. Gee I wonder how that happened?

I like Kelly but she is not right for this job.

  47. saintdevil says:

    Tacky, vomit-inducing, photoshopped into oblivion…

Those are just some of the categories which I would suggest instead of “adorable or boring”.

  48. Lola7 says:

    Wow, she looks amazing!

  49. jdao says:

    cute!

  50. kazoo says:

she looks old. what is she, like 26? and damn her head is big. i bet she wishes there was a plastic surgery that could fix that.

  51. gamblea says:

ow the 3rd picture. I hope that is just poorly done photoshopping and not a broken leg.

  52. S says:

A thousand times better than Raccoon. She really looks rather gorgeous here, esp. in the flowered dress.

  53. galaxy.girl says:

    Happy For Her 🙂

  54. pretty good! go kelly!

  55. Nicki says:

I am surprised – she looks a lot better than I would have thought. It’s obviously all down to photoshopping, make up and lighting, but I guess that’s with any model (and Kelly definitely isn’t a model! ). I personally can’t stand her or Sharon – both mouthy, opinonated and painful, but I have to admit, Kelly looks okay here. I preferred Racoon in looks for this, but I can see why she had to go.

  56. CallieTrichid says:

What is with her leg in the second to last picture? Photoshop fail.

  57. lachica says:

they trimmed her legs, calves, cankles and chin. sorry i’m not buying.

  58. dj says:

I like these ads w/Kelly. @K: totally agree with the old Candy’s ads! Classic!

  59. foozy says:

she looks really good. she’s come a long way.

  60. skilo says:

I hate to say it, because I don’t care for Madonna, but I love the entire look in the second pic. I wouldn’t wear it as I am 40 not 14 to 24 but I would have bought it for my daughter if she’d wear it. Also, to each his own I guess, but I like the Osbournes.

  61. *-* says:

    ..and photoshop awards goes to…:P

  62. JenJen says:

I think she looks ridiculous as a model. Her thighs are quite thick and she has nerve to talk about any ones body or how they dress. She’s 26 and I don’t consider that a girl either. Spoiled, boring, no talent.

  63. hellen says:

I’m on the “looks a lot better than expected” bandwagon. Clothes are hideous, but she looks cute. And in the second pic you can see how much she resembles Sharon.

  64. Deven says:

The fact that she’s not your standard model makes the whole campaign much more attractive than it otherwise would be. Kelly looks great and her look is great, too. She’s never looked better!

  65. Tess says:

Hmmmm….I’m picking up that telltale, overripe whiff of rank nepotism.

Yes, she’s cute but come on. It kind of sucks the way the offspring of the elites are getting such audacious career breaks.

But why not? They’re the golden ones and we peasants most certainly, are not.

  66. GT says:

Kelly looks absolutely gorgeous and amazing!!

  67. original kate says:

she looks cute and quirky. i like it.

  68. Jess says:

Uh, heck to the no. I can’t imagine these ads appearing to teens at all. Bad.

  69. Hakura says:

@Riley (11)- “I bet Mama Kardashian was trying to push her youngest daughters for the job.”

You’re probably right about that, & she would’ve been the better choice. But these ads strangely work. Aside from the usual insane amount of photoshopping, Kelly looks pretty good.

Not that I’m at all a fan out of the clothing. >.< Not even at 11 would I have worn those.

  70. Shay says:

They have to photograph her from a particular angle to minimise her Habsburg Jaw. Her Amy Winehouse style tattoos are awful and no, she’ll never be really photogenic. Meh. I’ll always think of her as hideous, it’s the look she has in her eyes. That arrogance. Snot nosed rich kid.

  71. Ilovemee says:

Big square face jaw forehead. . . .ahhhhh!

  72. eugene says:

I LIKE KELLY VERY MUCH, BUT HELLO “MR. PHOTOSHOP”!

  73. Wiggles says:

Meh. I’m actually surprised Kelly would do something like this. It just proves all the time she bitched about bubble gum bimbos, secretly deep down, that’s all she wanted to be. I was hoping she would do her own clothes line seeing how she always had her own style, not morph into the shit image she rebelled from all those years when she was ‘fat’. FAIL.

  74. Ari says:

She is a way better model than Ruler Willis that’s for DAMN sure – I really enjoyed these.

  75. TXCinderella says:

It says on the wall behind Kellie in the first pic that the line was created by Madonna. Wasn’t the line created by Lourdes and inspired by Madonna?

  76. amanda says:

She looks just like her father. If she actually looked good in these pics everyone would be ripping her apart and saying how stupid and untalented she was.

  77. Knotstu says:

    Yay !
    Kelly is Ace !
    Go Kelly Go !!!!

  78. Anna says:

Well sure, it’s all good when you photoshop half her face and legs off .. The jawline? The calves.. C’mon your not fooling anyone Kel!

  79. Dhavy says:

she looks great and she doesn’t look that old!

  80. Laura says:

Her leg in the third picture…oi. I used to bend my Barbie’s legs like that.

  81. Hakura says:

@Shay (71) – “Her Amy Winehouse style tattoos are awful and no, she’ll never be really photogenic.”

Well, if nothing else, even she has expressed regret in getting those tattoos. (Claimed they were a big mistake, & lamented the casual way young people get tattoos these days, which is something I agree with her on).

    @Laura (81) – Ugh. I hadn’t even noticed that.

@TXCinderella“It says on the wall behind Kellie in the first pic that the line was created by Madonna. Wasn’t the line created by Lourdes and inspired by Madonna?”

Yeah, I’m confused by that too…. Unless they decided to claim it was a ‘joint’ collaboration, & put it under Madonna’s name for the same of marketing. But everything I heard before this lead me to believe these were Lourdes’ designs.
