Oscar Fashion: Scarlett Johansson’s cheap-looking Dolce & Gabbana

wenn3230611

I absolutely HATED this Dolce & Gabbana dress. It’s not even a time when I can even justify Scarlett Johansson choosing the dress because it might have looked good on the rack. There is no reason for this dress to be on the Oscar red carpet. It looked SO cheap. Like, a stripper’s coverup. Totally trashy. But I’ll say something nice: ScarJo’s body looked really great in the dress. Her weight has fluctuated the past few years, and I feel like she’s stabilized a bit and regained her curves while still being slender and petite. But when you’ve got this great body, shouldn’t you know how to dress it without looking so friggin’ trashy?

Shall we talk about the hair? I honestly didn’t mind the hair, but I know a lot of you hated it. The dress offended me. The hair did not, although this is not appropriate Oscar red carpet hair. Much, much too undone.

Also – the dude who was ScarJo’s date: her agent, Joe Machota. Their relationship is apparently “platonic”. He’s kind of cute though, right? Probably gay, though. He gave her a look on the red carpet like, “Bitch, WTF are you wearing?”

LOL. Because her dress is almost the same color as the carpet in that second picture, I was like “Whoa! She’s giving Natalie a run for her money!”

  2. devilgirl says:

Another fugly frock. Her hair sucked too. Overall, she just looked terrible.

  3. LOVE ANGELINA says:

*Gasp* I have never seen her look so horrible. OMG its like she is going to a gothic prom or something. Ugh. It kinda does give off a Adult film convention/stripper vibe. You know when the strippers walk around and ask the guy if he wants a lap dance, thats kinda the outfit they put on. You shorten that dress its perfect for that. Poor girl. Eyeshadow is hideous, hair bad…poor girl.

I never wanna see Scarlett like that again. I adore her.

  4. malachais says:

I actually like this color, alot. Her hair isn’t Oscar appropriate I think. The dress overall isn’t Oscar appropriate, so its a no for me.

  5. Hautie says:

Scarlett is always hit or miss when it comes to the red carpet.

I want to give her points for having wore a great color. And skipped wearing some crazy floral or solid black.

But the doily lace material is not flattering.

The actual design of the dress is not bad. The material is just a unfortunate choice.

  6. brin says:

Yeah I didn’t like it either (what was up with the lining…two-toned?),but she definitely looked better than she did at the Globes with the frumpy dress and bride of Frankenstein hair.

  7. Johnthing says:

She also found it hard to walk in that dress.

  8. Johnthing says:

In that second photo, there’s a pregnancy/fat illusion since it’s the same color as the carpet!

  9. merski says:

Funny, I actually thought the absolutely worst thing about this dress is that it was just not good for her figure, it did not compliment her body at all! She’s not very tall and the dress made her look like she has chicken legs and an absolutely enormous butt. She could barely walk in this thing, it was just ridiculous.

  10. Donna Wingfield says:

    She looks awful.

  11. Jackson says:

It looks like she rolled out of bed and said, ‘Hey, I think I’ll go to the Oscars. And I have 10 minutes to get ready.’

Ugly dress, dull color, messy-blah-dull hair and makeup that washed her out even further. Big old FAIL. She did look slightly better when she presented on the show – methinks the people backstage looked at her and thought no way can we let her go out there looking like that.

  12. Ell says:

That dress needs cutting up and making in to covers for spare toilet rolls!

  13. Marjalane says:

That hair isn’t appropriate for anything! I used to cry when I’d wake up and my hair looked like that- too short for a ponytail and too wacked out for a headband. It cracks me up that really pretty celeb’s *think* they can get away with anything….and they can’t.

  14. Quest says:

I liked the color of the dress but not the dress, it was horrid for the occasion.

As I posted before ScarJo needed to do something with the ‘I just got f*cked in the limo hair’ – we all know you did not get any (at least on the limo ride to the show)

  15. Kaboom says:

Scarlett, if a guy is looking at you in a gown and thinks “Do not want” you need to fire whoever talked you into wearing it.

  16. Rasputina says:

That makeup makes her look like a junkie. Some people, like me, can work that junkie look, but certainly not her and CERTAINLY in not that dress. This calls for some goddamn Q-tips.

  17. TXCinderella says:

Ugh, too tight and cheap looking.

  18. Sadie says:

Am I the only one who thought she looked great??

  19. Tuatara says:

Wow, that second pic is such a cool optical illusion. It’s like when you can see the faces or the vase, but not both at the same time.

  20. Hatedoodle says:

No, I think she looks good, too.

  21. beth says:

ZOMG, saw the dress and thought ‘late 19th century Texas bordello’… wrong date, should’ve been with some John Wayne lookalike…. trashed that thought and found it replaced by ‘made from curtains from that bus in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ although that would be unjustifiably unfair 1. because it would be cruel of me to associate such bad taste with such a good movie, and by extension, its art director and set designers, and 2. because said curtains never in existed…………………………

  22. Kdub says:

I thought she looked good and i like her hair!

  23. tango says:

The dress would’ve been much better if the lining was the same color as the lace and it had a deeper V-neck. OR do the gown in all black lace. I don’t think Scarletts hair looks too bad. I wish it had more blond highlights thoug.

  24. Lisa says:

Dress is ugly, she’s absolutely gorgeous!

  25. Sumodo1 says:

That dress knocked the snot out of me. I was like all WTF ZOMGF!

  26. Dr_Venkman says:

Mollyb: too funny, exactly my thoughts

  27. DogBoy says:

she’s too good looking to dress that cheaply.

  28. Venus says:

I cannot believe that a girl this pretty can look that ugly. Everything was wrong — the fit, the color, her hair (which, she ALWAYS gets wrong, imo) and her make up. Was there not one mirror or friend, anywhere, when she was getting ready?

The ONLY thing good about this is the cool optical illusion in the second pic.

  29. mannequin says:

I loved the dress and I like the fact that Scarlett seems so unpretentious. If a girl feels right in a dress, then it’s the right dress for her.
I was expecting a different hairdo, but she looks gorgeous no matter what.

  30. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Her make up makes her look dead.

She looked like a hot mess.

  31. xxodettexx says:

you know, as much as i love purples and lace, you would think i would love this dress… but i guess i agree in that this dress looks cheap! weird… anyway, love the back!

  32. kiyoshigirl says:

Other than a wedding gown, lace is hard to pull off. Even on a wedding gown, lace is hard to pull off. It’s a pain in the ass to dye, cut, sew and shape. D&G deserve credit for the quality construction of the garment, but the color is AWFUL. It was clearly designed to be a wedding gown. Whoever decided to pass it off as a formal evening gown missed the mark.

  33. Dee Cee says:

Love me for my intellect, faultless artistic talents not my awesome, overwhelming, even if dressed in a lacy ugly tinted designer sack, after being pulled thru a hedge backwards hairstyle.. beauty; isn’t coming thru as you planned Miss Scarlett

  34. sasa says:

Awful. Too tight AND see through.

  35. Cheyenne says:

Nothing wrong with the dress, it’s the HAIR that looked awful. It looks like it was cut by a five year old with a pair of blunt scissors.

  36. Brittany says:

    I really liked her dress.

But the hair and makeup were massive fails.

  37. melinda says:

I’m in the minority. I thought she looked gorgeous. The hair wasn’t Oscar appropriate, but i thought she made it all work.

  38. I Choose Me says:

    Hated this dress. Hate it!

  39. Solveig says:

The hair was cute, but not for a red carpet, not for the Oscar’s.
I totally agree with you on the dress, it was cheap and slightly vulgar.

  40. Angel says:

For me this was the WORST dress and look in general on this year Oscar

She usualy dresses nicely, but this… OMG 😉

  41. ordinarygirl86 says:

I thought she looked gorgeous- dress and hair but that orange eyeshadow was very drag queen. It was a very different look then the typical cookie cutter: glittery, shimmery, and tulle explosion Oscar dresses we usually see.

  42. Camille says:

I agree with @devilgirl. Awful, awful, awful all round. Nothing redeemable with this whole look at all.

  43. Juu says:

    Ugly dress matched her face.

  44. Jeri says:

I watched the show and thought the dress looked better on camera then in your photos.

The hair was a little too windblown but I like that style on her, (a little more combed though) I usually don’t care for her hair at all.

  45. Vera says:

The hair I thought I hated, but I really don’t mind – I just feel it isn’t really something for the Oscars, lest of all if your dress looks that bad.

I feel the only thing it has going for it is colour – it looks good on her and looks good on the (hardly) red carpet. The cut out is bad, the two colours of lace is worse. The actually cut (minus the cut out) isn’t that bad, but that much lace makes it look heavy and not very glamorous. I think I remember it moving alright, and on tv the two colours of lace weren’t so obnoxious, but in any pictures it is just bad.

  46. CB Rawks says:

You’re supposed to freshen up after you get banged in the cloak room.

  47. original kate says:

the dress is meh, but the hair looks like she had to stop and change a tire on her way to the auditorium. it’s the oscars, girl – at least put a little jeweled clip in your mop.

  48. dj says:

LOL. Celebitchy totally called it. I was flumoxed when so many others have called this dress one of the best dressed of the night (perhaps, ladies of the night?). I hated it and thought it was completely tacky. The hair looked like she just rolled out of bed too. Yuck!

  49. ViktoryGin says:

I actually really love the color on her. I think that it flatters her skin tone beautifully. And the back cut-out is a nice touch. The overall texture of the dress, however, with the grandma’s doilies circa 1913, can go to hell.

Her makeup is lovely. Love the orange and dusky gold shadow.

  50. Becky says:

I thought the dress and the make-up were super tacky. Her eyeshadow in particular was awful. The hair was okay, I guess. Not great but not anywhere as bad as the dress and the make-up.

  51. NicoleAM says:

@MollyB: lol I had the same reaction! I had to do a double take!
I don’t understand why her hair always looks like shit. And the dress is awful. I rarely like what she wears. She’s so pretty, I can’t understand why it’s so hard to style her nicely.

  52. Nikki says:

I’m going to have to disagree with almost everyone on this one- I loved the dress. I think the color is beautiful, and though I can see how lace can come across as trashy, it can also come across as vintage-y and retro, and I thought it looked very vintage on her. The back is awesome and I think her figure looks incredible. Her make-up is good, but the hair is a little too unkempt.

  53. Grandma of Four says:

I am still trying to figure out WHAT that strange looking white lining was on the front of the bodice above the sweetheart neckline under the lace! VERY ODD looking! It almost looked like she forgot to remove a paper under garmet! WIERD!
