Katy Perry covers Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”: better or meh?

Katy Perry did an acoustic version of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” during a concert in Paris last night. I have to say that I’m surprised at how well she sings in this clip (she’s usually off key) and continue to be amazed at how much “Born This Way” sounds like “Express Yourself.” It seems like Katy sings better when she’s able to sit down and concentrate instead of having to wag her T&A all over the stage. She’s still not good enough to get to the top three on American Idol, but she can sing ok.

In related news about Katy, she’s been named the new face of British “hairstyling and appliance brand” ghd. New ads will appear featuring Katy and shot by David LaChapelle. ghd will also sponsor Katy’s European tour, which is currently on now. As US Magazine reviews, Katy currently reps Proactiv and Schick. Plus she has her own perfume. All she needs is a book, a reality show and a multiple clothing and shoe lines.

For comparison here’s Gaga doing Born this Way at the Grammys:

Hubby and I saw a clip of her doing jazzy versions of some of her pop songs, and she does sing much better when she slows down and relaxes. I think she’d be better off in a different genre of music where she could relax and sing in her natural register.

eta: link to jazzy “I Kissed A Girl” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjYenYr52Ko Really only the beginning is jazzy, but you get the idea.

    I prefer this to GaGa!

  3. kiko says:

    well the song still sucks…

  4. Kim says:

Katie has a terrible voice. Not a huge Gaga fan but at least she really can sing.

Kiko is right-the song is bad regardless of who is singing it.

  5. L says:

I have a ghd flatiron and it is awesome. Weird that she’s working with them though.

I’m not a big fan of Lady Gaga but the song has a message in it and in this day and age we need to hear this message .. people are people .. God makes no mistakes … we are all born unique. Katy needs to not sing live, she’s a better “video” performer like Britany and Madonna.

  7. javagirl1 says:

kiko: you beat me to it.

  8. jover says:

If you have to spend months advertising and promoting your song and its message, then you’ve failed. The message should come out naturally, not contrived through massive pr. ANd yes, Kiko, your are right;the song is lousy. If we are all superstars, then I should be able to shoot hoops like Michael Jordan – the lyrics are strung together pop psychobabble and happy Up with people type sentiments.

  9. sapphire says:

    meh or eh.

  10. DetRiotgirl says:

Honestly, I think she sang it just as well as Gaga does. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment to Perry, or in an insult to Gaga though.

Also, yes Kiko, the song still sucks.

  11. Tiffany says:

I prefer Katy. The song and Gaga suck. So over her. It is just SO not comfortable to wear a condom as clothing!

  12. mystified says:

@Tiffany, I’m in total agreement with you. Katy always looks fresh, even when singing that lifeless song.

I don’t know who tires me more: Gaga or James Franco.

  13. swanjaco says:

Yeah, Katy’s hot, no question, but something about her whole Betty Boop act shrivels my loins like a tub of dry ice was dumped down the front of my pants.

  14. california angel says:

    TMI swanjaco lol

  15. Louise says:

I like Katy really love some of her songs. She definately sings ballads and acoustic songs better. Some of the acoustic versions are better than the studio version.

  16. lucy2 says:

Better than she usually sounds, but I still don’t think she has a very good singing voice. She’s all style, no substance. But at least her boobs aren’t hanging out for once.

The first time I heard that song all the way through, I actually sang Express Yourself along to it – freakishly similar. I’m amazed Madonna isn’t throwing a hissy fit, unless she didn’t write that song herself? Don’t know.

  17. Fat Jenny says:

All this horrible bubble-gum music just continues to get recycled. How awful. They don’t make real singers the way they used to.

  18. sarah says:

I was over Gaga a long time ago but I like this song (her version)

  19. Emily says:

How can she still be a spokesperson for Proactiv if you can see her pimples though 2cm of makeup?

  20. gg says:

I have this to say – I think Madge got “Express Yourself” from “Respect Yourself” by the Staple Singers.

    Who’s zoomin who?

  21. itzbilebitch says:

WTH.. no you can’t sing so don’t try and sing a song that belongs to a real performer.. f off katy perry.

  22. Brittney says:

At first glance at that headline, I couldn’t believe she’d try to perform a song by such a superior vocalist. But honestly, Gaga’s voice is completely lost to autotuning in the original, and I’m surprisingly impressed by Katy (for the first time ever).

Also, my soft spot for this song is courtesy entirely of that young Canadian pianist who covered it on YouTube.

  23. Newbie says:

I didn’t watch the grammy’s so when i saw the clip of gaga coming out of that giant egg, I completely lost it. This woman is a total idiot. I don’t know why people continue to buy her shit. It sucks hardcore. *endofrant*

  24. Lemon Drops says:

    They both suck. Next.

  25. luls says:

I HATE KATY’S BANGS! uggh… they suck! regardless of wig color!

  26. Jane Butler says:

Got to say I prefer Gaga.
