Tom Cruise bought Katie Holmes a sewing machine for her 32nd birthday

fp_5247458_cruise_holmes_cwny_12_15

There is just something so sad about this Katie Holmes interview. I don’t know… I think it just struck a particular chord with me. Katie sat down for a Women’s Wear Daily (via People) interview, and she talked a little about always traveling, always being on the move, and what she does to make various places feel like home (From WWD via People):

One of her tips for making daughter Suri Cruise, who’ll be 5 in April, feel at home no matter where they are? “Bring lots of crayons, glue good paper and you can turn any room into a very warm, familial place.”

Which is kind of… I don’t know. Yeah, I get that she’s talking about doing arts and crafts projects with Suri, but it conjures up this image of Katie, the robotic girl-child-bride, sitting alone in her latest Xenu-cave, drawing stick figures. But the real sadness (for me) comes with this:

“My husband got me a sewing machine for my birthday,” Holmes said, adding that she likes to get Suri involved. “My mom grew up making curtains and pillows and everything, and it made our home very warm, so I like to do things like that with my daughter.”

Okay, I too got a sewing machine for my birthday… when I turned 10! I used to take sewing classes (I was good) and I was really into it and everything. Now, Katie is 32 years old. And she’s embarking on an ill-fated second “career” as a “fashion designer” and she fancies herself to be “crafty”. Oh, CB just reminded me that Katie scrapbooks too. It’s just… sad. I’m not saying people who sew and do crafts and scrapbook are sad, I’m saying that thinking about Katie Holmes doing all of those things (while she’s all drugged out or whatever) makes me sad for her.

Also, it’s kind of a funny/odd gift for an A-lister to give his young wife for her birthday, right? Why not give her a broom and a mop, or something else that says “All I wanted was for you to shut up and be a happy little CoS-bot homemaker”?

Kaiser, as well as you write, your real talent is in selecting the pics to go with the story! Katie’s face says it all in these. I bet she has her first adult beverage by 9:00 a.m. everyday.

  2. brin says:

Transformation to Stepford/CoS wife almost complete.

  3. devilgirl says:

    But she wanted a vacuum!

  4. DesertRose says:

LMAO! Can you imagine Katie’s home made raggedy-ass curtains hanging from a window in a 20 mil mansion? Sure.

  5. brin says:

    @devilgirl….shhhh…that’s her anniversary gift (it’s a surprise)!

  6. Wif says:

So what should she get for her birthday? If it’s something she enjoys, then so be it. It’s not like people are hiring her, she needs something to do with her time.

  7. LindyLou says:

What the??? Sewing machine? Interesting – I guess.

  8. Racheal says:

Jay-Z got Beyonce an island for her birthday. Her own island. That’s all I’m gonna say.

  9. Sue says:

He could have gotten her a sewing machine any day it not like it so special he had to wait to give it to her or to get the best one he had to save up for it, as a B-Day present from a man that rich kind of sucks.

  10. Your mama says:

Maybe b/c she’s started her own fashion line…?… I dunno but at this point I’d be asking for a dildo if I was Cruise’s wifey. Sorry if vulgar but I can’t help but think it.

  11. Mia135 says:

Lol! It was probably some kind of designer sewing machine worth fifty grand.
She might turn out to have more success as a designer, you never know. Look at Victoria Beckham. I mean I know she doesn’t actually sew, but still.
Sounds like Katie is yearning to do something creative and meaningful with her life, since the acting thing hasn’t been going too well.

  12. Hautie says:

Maybe it was exactly what she told him she wanted. Which I assume it was not some random 500.00 machine from Sears budget line.

So I am not going to mock her for her hobby. It could be alot worse.

She could be telling about her new e-meter machine that she can crank all the way up to 11.

  13. Diane says:

Sound like she really wants her childhood back.

  14. Isabel says:

OK, I got a sewing machine for my birthday 2 years ago, and a vacuum this year for Christmas (a DYSON!!), and they both made me very happy. I am also not a creepy loser, and nobody should be sad for me!

If it’s what she wanted and what she likes to do, I don’t see the problem.

  15. Johnny Depp's Girl says:

Probably has a gold needle on it tho.

    High Class sewing machine

  16. Sisi says:

    Suri in homemade dresses? Lmao…

  17. spotchecker says:

a sewing machine is okay, as long as she doesn’t go all kathy ireland and shit, and try and design ‘home design goods’ for my apartment. i already have celebrities in my head. i don’t need them in my home.

  18. Jenny says:

In that second picture, she has Kelly Preston dazed eyes. Ick.

  19. Pow! says:

Hey, I make things (tote bags, pillows, clothes, curtains, etc) with my sewing machine (I even got a new one for Christmas)! I make vintage type things and sell them on Etsy. I’m not a professional or anything but it is a fun hobby that brings me joy (and I’m not a loser). If she really did want a sewing machine, then who cares? You don’t have to be 10 to enjoy it.

  20. mommyesq says:

    OMG, these pictures are awesome!!
I wonder if they’ll sew little purses to hold their gummy penises, bottle cozies and pacifier tethers.

  21. Praise St. Angie! says:

    Hautie, nice Tap reference there.

“if we need that extra push over the cliff”

  22. ! says:

I think you’re being unnecessarily mean and nitpicky. I don’t like these two either, but it sounds like she genuinely enjoys doing handcrafts. I am 27 years old and just got an antique sewing machine as a gift, and I was thrilled. I’d love it if my partner bought me a nice new modern one too. And I’m not some Susie Homemaker looking for a hobby to pass the time waiting for hubby to come home, either, just someone who really enjoys making things with their hands. It brings me endless joy to sew outfits for my daughter.

  23. guesty says:

Could she look anymore stepford than she does in these pics??????? GAH.

  24. Mary Jane says:

    @4. DesertRose:
LMAO! Can you imagine Katie’s home made raggedy-ass curtains hanging from a window in a 20 mil mansion? Sure.

I am laughing my ass off! You made my day…

  25. mymy says:

Oh she gets a sewing Machine and Suri gets penis candy. Why did you not post that shot. Of Katie giving Suri a box of Penis shaped gummy Bears and Serendipity and midnight. And smirking about it.
It was the MOST inappropriate thing I have seen this mental case do as a parent.

  26. lucy2 says:

If she enjoys that, that’s great. But it does seem an odd birthday gift for multi-millionaires who live a VERY lavish lifestyle.
Maybe she can sew some sheets together and use them to escape out the window?

  27. RHONYC says:

    i envy her.

    not. one. bit. 🙁

  28. mary jane says:

    lol@devilgirl

  29. Rita says:

    Co-sign Mary Jane @lol @devilgirl.

  30. Isa says:

Another attempt of them to make us believe that they are a normal couple, and look: Katie even makes her own pillow cases!

    Yawn.

  31. marge says:

so she can make him dresses… i guess it’s not easy to find clothes to match the heels he wears!

  32. Andrea says:

She looks like a friggin’ robot.
A sewing machine, my husband would be dead meat!

  33. azurea says:

As an avid sewer & artist, I think it was
a sweet gift. A top of the line machine is very pricey & does all kinds of stuff that a creative person dreams about. One of the
first things I bought after my husband died, and I got the insurance cheque, was a really great $4000 machine….and there are much more expensive ones. Heck, after losing my husband, I deserved a treat…and Katie deserves a whole lot for what she has to put up with. Mind you, a sewing machine isn’t the kind of thing you want to haul around with you on jet-setting trips!
But at least she likes to do something normal.

  34. Leigh says:

I think ‘sewing machine’ means one of those Scientology workers who signed his life away…

  35. TeeTee says:

I’m sure Suri wants her to make her clothes now, LOL…poor Katie.

dang, Suri is almost 5 and is still sucking a pacifer, smdh.

Katie’s eyes are tricky as heck.

  36. Quest says:

I’m speechless…really. Of all the choices in gifts that Tom can have …a sewing machine…

    ????

Katie could use it to stitch his balls to the bed-sheets when he is asleep. A SEWING MACHINE…REALLY TOM?

I hope you got a nice dinner with that.

  37. LittleFATMe says:

I can imagine she got a hell of a sewing machine! I just turned 30 in November and I got a sewing machine “for my birthday” last summer. It is a simple machine (as I am MUCH the beginner) but it was still a bit pricy – I would probably die for her sewing machine! It’s probably the 9,000 dollar Quattro and she refers to it as a simple machine!
    http://www.brother-usa.com/Homesewing/quattro/

  38. irishserra says:

LOL, I love that first picture: “Alright, I’ll let you hold my hand in public, but you’re not fooling anyone…”

  39. tuttle88 says:

I got a sewing machine from my mum for my last birthday. Best present ever! I love it. If any billionares want to give me a super fancy sewing machine I am all about that. I asked for a sewing machine and got a sewing machine, if I had asked for a sewing machine and gotten jewelry I’d be pissed off, I sew a lot, I never wear jewelry. It depends on the person.

  40. OriginalGracie says:

@Pow!: I would love to have a look at your Etsy store! I wish like crazy that I could sew. I think it’s wonderful.

  41. danielle says:

I’m pretty sure she can buy her own sewing machine. Also – she appears to have bedazzled a sweatshirt and then put it on in the top pic. Not a good idea.

  42. Dana M says:

@pow! – so fun, sew too! I love making pillows. My friends think they are high end and are surprised when I tell them I make them 🙂 I’m not a professional, but I love making simple things for my home like chair covers and table place mats. I like being unique with my decorating and love picking fabrics.

    Guess I’m pretty lame,LOL.

  43. searching4grace says:

Okay, first, she should ALWAYS cover her ears. LOL My husband has big ears, but they don’t stick way out like that. Second, is that her eyes giving a cry for help in the picture where she’s in black and white? It looks like it’s a “hey, people, get me outta here!!”

  44. the original bellaluna says:

Mama Luna had a rule regarding gifts: Household gifts were not acceptable unless it was something she SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED. Otherwise, it was an insult.

I’ve adopted the same rule, and Mama Luna & I have no problems with “household gifts”; both our husbands respect the rule.

How would TommyGirl like it if Katie-Bot gave him an oil-changing kit for his b-day?

  45. Harley says:

@Racheal- an island? Really? Damn. That’s my dream. That and some “fuck you” money to go with the island. But I digress.

I don’t know. I used to love Tom Cruise (waaaaay back in the day. Like the ’86 Top Gun years), but ever since the whole Oprah meltdown and all the SoC stuff that you read about, and Katie’s dead eyes – I just don’t get it. It reminds me of the Family Guy episode where there’s a power outage and Katie’s ankle monitoring bracelet dies out and she makes a run for it.

  46. Dea says:

Most of you will hate me for sticking with Katie but I have a feeling she is extremely happy with him. As far as I can tell she loves him and maybe she asked for that present, who knows? Thank god people are different so not everyone is attracted to thousands of dollars of birthday presents. Simple and meaningful presents work much better.

  47. Jules says:

Lucky girl. I had to buy my own sewing machine.

  48. Anoneemouse says:

This poor girl needs a girlfriend desperately! I get that her daughter and her are close but she needs some adult time too…You always see her alone or with Tom or with Suri, no one else – that’s what I find sad.

  49. Nanea says:

Isn’t it sad how these $cientoBots try so hard to be perceived as normal human beings when everyone can read that New Yorker piece and find out how they really tick?

Or did Katie get that sewing machine because they have to save money now, after they spent so much on Suri’s costumes for carnival last year?

The way KH is dressed quite often, she looks like she’s not only in need of a sewing machine, but also in need of a course on how to actually use it. Anyone remember those Holmes/Yang pants that looked like the hem was sewn by hand by someone who was visually impaired?

  50. Sue says:

For the average person a 500.00 dollar or more sewing machine would be a fantastic gift for a crafty person but for a multi-millionaires who wife that has been serially trying to get in the fashion business since 2009 and probable loved sewing for long, a sewing machine for her 32 birthday and they been together for what 5 ½ years. To me that should have been a gift he could have given her when they first started dating or a gift back in 2009 when she stated to make her on “fashion line”.

  51. Kim says:

Who wouldnt like crafts and getting a sewing machine for their birthday when they have EVERYTHING else in the world. She probably craves doing crafts/something with her own hands because she doesnt get to do much else on her own.

Nothing wrong with this BUT if Katie is trying to act like she is a simple girl who just wants a sewing machine – we aint buying it. That women and child have warddrobes that cost more than most peoples lifetime salary!

And we all know that isnt all he gave her – pllleeeaasssee. This was im sure 1 of many gifts.

  52. melinda says:

I can’t believe I am going to sort of stand up for these two, but I think it’s kind of nice that he got her a sewing machine. He might have tried to be thoughtful. Just because you have an ass ton of money doesn’t mean you should feel the need to out-do each gift for every holiday (an island?! really???).

  53. Chica T says:

Gross. Eww. I would take a bat to that thing on my way out the door with Suri in hand.

  54. Jee says:

I’ve asked for domestic type stuff that I couldn’t afford on my own, like a stand mixer and a crockpot, and yes, a sewing machine. It’s dorky but some of that stuff is expensive!

See the thing is, it’s okay if you ask for it, or someone notices that you want it. It’s not okay if it’s a hint that person thinks you should be doing. Katie fancies herself a designer, so a sewing machine is probably a thoughtful gift.

And now that I’ve defended them, I’m going to crawl away and sob.

  55. AveryJessup says:

Add me to the list of people who like to sew and would be thrilled to get a sewing machine.

    This is such a non-story.

  56. Yasmine says:

@ Pow: I love looking at all the personally made stuff at etsy!! What’s your store name? 🙂

Also, I gotta agree with you Kaiser, something about that story is just really sad. It’s not pathetic to do any of those things, I love sewing myself. What IS pathetic though, is the way she talked about it. Some people are saying they got sewing machines as gifts, and I agree, that’s cool. But Katie Holmes is just so sad and lifeless, and her talking about that sewing machine reinforces just how lifeless and unhappy she must be now. And she must yearn for her mum and her childhood (she said early on she wanted a catholic childhood for Suri too), can you blame her?

  57. Caz says:

This is my new favourite site. LOL at the article and choice of photos! If my husband gave me a sewing machine I’d throw it at him. Being married to GMD would be difficult – you’d need some hobbies and interests to take your mind off the stress of it all. Hope Katie gets a lot of $$ once the contract ends and that she gets to keep Suri – they do seem to have a strong bond. Jay-Z bought Beyonce an island? That’s obscene.

  58. original kate says:

mr. original kate bought me a beautiful kitchen aid mixer with attachments for my birthday a few years ago (i bake ALOT)and i was thrilled. it was a very thoughtful gift and he even got it in my fave color, black. i use it all the time and i love it. so i’m not dismayed by the sewing machine -it’s a fine present if she really wanted it.

what does dismay me, however, is the vacant fembot look katie always has these days.

  59. Benny says:

She sounds mentally challenged. I don’t think she is though, so I’m gonna vote “high” or “doped up” or *something*.

  60. ghostwriter says:

@mymy – I know , right? The penis candy seemed wildly inappropriate and just crazy.

  61. clare says:

What brand sewing machine did Tom buy for her?

  62. Flan says:

She looks scared when he’s kissing her…

  63. Chris says:

He bought his daughter an ipad, his son an ipod and his wife an iron.

  64. Banshee74 says:

Uhm…wow..he’s a charmer. From the looks of that first picture, he should have invested in a hairbrush…and as for the rest of the photos…a little something to bring focus back to her weird googley eyes

  65. Pink Elephant says:

Wow. Yeah. The perfect gift from one gal to another!

  66. Quercus says:

OMG you killed me with those pictures! Does anyone remember that ridiculous show, Small Wonder?

She’s a Taaaall Wonder, pretty and bright with soft curls!
Just a Talllll Wonder, a girl unlike other girls!
    She’s fantastic, made of plastic….etc

  67. Faye says:

I would hate that. But that’s because I hate sewing. I haven’t sewn since I had to back in girl scouts to get a badge, which is when I learned I hated it.

Perhaps she expressed an interest, or shared that memory of her and her mother with him and he thought it would be nice now that she has a daughter of her own. Maybe he was just trying to be thoughtful and sweet.

  68. dweeb says:

nice rack in the second pic…never realized they looked that good

  69. jp says:

Good God, she looks frightening/frightened in that last picture.

  70. the original bellaluna says:

I don’t care what brand it is; I inherited a Singer from my Grandmother when I was like 12 years old. THERE IS NO EXCUSE for this UNLESS IT WAS A SPECIFIC REQUEST.

  71. Reese says:

I had an actual comment but that 2nd picture scared the sh*t outta me!

  72. Justme says:

I have an obsession with cookware. Before my Dad passed away, he litterally got me just about everything I wanted, so I pretty much have a fully stocked kitchen. I’ve been making hints to Mr. Justme for a bread maker for my birthday this year, and since he’s gonna be deployed for my birthday, hell, I’ll go out and buy it myself and tell everyone what a wonderful, loving husband I have who got me EXACTLY what I wanted for my birthday. If Katie wanted a sewing machine, then honestly I think it’s really sweet that Tom got her one. At least now she has a creative release for herself and maybe she’ll pass that onto Suri. *shrugs*

  73. look, i got a new sewing machine for my last birthday and it’s the best present ever. BUT my hubs isn’t a billionaire psycho who controls every aspect of my life… you know? a sewing machine from that guy is a slap in the face.

  74. lisa says:

WHY did she say.. “my husband” and not Tom.. she does that a lot. just like “my daughter” and not Suri..

(I mean we all know she is married to Tom and Suri is the daughter)

BUT my thing is does Katie do that vacant eye thing on purpose. I thinks she does. I am beginning to think she likes the attention.

She knows when she and Tom are together there are going to be photos. And wham she does that thing with her eyes.

Maybe Katie is painting a picture for the world to see. Maybe she is smarter than people think.

She got Tom and she has not had another child even though Tom wants more children.

    I don’t know..

  75. lisa says:

One thing.. I love making pillows too.. easy thing if you are not the best at sewing.

but when you are as rich as they are. simple things are the best gifts I guess.

  76. bibi says:

@lisa finally a smart person. katie is not a victim. she knows what she’s doing.

i remember reading an interview with jada smith and she said katie runs the house. i believe her. katie is doing this on purpose. she knows she gets attention by playing the victim. i bet tom is beyond frustrated. he can’t divorce her cos that would mean his career would be over for good. plus there’s suri whom he adores.

katie will leave him when the time is right and she’ll be applauded for “escaping” the “evil monster”. it’s interesting how the media works. he was painted as this monster, when in reality none of the women he’s been with had anything bad to say about him. everyone who has met him has only nice things to say about him.

big mistake tom getting involved with this woman. she runs the show and he can’t do a thing. i feel sorry for him

  77. e.non says:

what is the deal with the bizarre handhold. i’d love to hear his explanation for that.

she looks so drugged; there’s no way to deny she’s under extraordinary stress.

  78. Dani says:

I don’t know. She can have anything she wants any day of the year. Money isn’t the issue here.

Maybe the sewing machine is a nostalgic thing for her as she is remembering happier times plus she wants to have the same experience w/Suri that she had with her Mom.

It kinda reminds me of the movie “Citizen Kane”, yeah remember “Rosebud”. Maybe it is that type of irony. The simple things in life often bring the most joy.

  79. dahlia1947 says:

Again reading too much into it! Alot of people are creative/crafty because their parents were also! So if that’s what she wants to do then LEAVE HER BE! It may be an odd present to some, but remember SHE CAN HAVE ANYTHING SHE WANTS.
Actually she probably already does. And don’t feel sorry for her because she knew what she was getting into to get a “career.” If their marriage is what the tabloids say it is.

  80. Brooklyn says:

Why didn’t he just give her the ingredients to make him a sandwich? it would be an equally bizarre stepford wife gift, but a hell of a lot cheaper.

  81. Hakura says:

I’m with those who pointed out that there’s nothing wrong with household appliances as gifts *IF* it’s something the person requests specifically.

Not what *I* would be asking for, of course.

  82. Danny says:

Some of you guys are so mean (but funny).

Laughed out loud at that second picture. We could play “Caption this”. My choice is “Download 76% complete”

  83. Newbie says:

I have never been like this. My mother bought me a sewing machine when I graduated from High School. Wishful thinking on her part. I tried to take it back to the store to trade it in for loads of music. To no avail. So it’s still in my closet, nearly ten years later, still in the box.
So it ain’t my thing. But I still think that some women love it and that they’re good at it. My mother-in-law can sew anything from a wedding dress to leather seat-covers (and she’s done both of those things more than once), and I think it’s rad that she’s so handy and that they save all that money. I also think it’s cool when people get really into quilting. It can be a real art, and it’s so personal and functional at the same time. Ok. I’m done.

  84. Newbie says:

I love those two tops on Holmes. I don’t really care for the scales or whatever on the pink one, but the color makes her skin look amazing. And I LOVE that striped sweater. I wish I had a top like it.

  85. CB Rawks says:

    LOL @Brooklyn! 😀

  86. jaye E says:

I think their relationship is odd, but count me as another one who would welcome a sewing machine for my birthday, christmas, festivus…whatever. I think if she is as crafty as she implies, she probably hinted that she wanted one. And I’m SO sure it wasn’t a $500 job. Where are people getting that from? Did SHE say it was a $500 machine?

  87. jaye E says:

And to the person saying she gave Suri a box of gummi penises, that’s not true. According to E!, Suri picked up the box of candy thinking they were gummi bears. When her mother saw what they were she took them from her and put them back.

  88. Zelda says:

    @Hautie
    @Leigh

    hahahahaha!

As for the gift, I actually think it’s nice that he would get her a hobby gift for her birthday. When you have all the money in the world, spending more and more of it on holidays probably just starts to ring hollow. I mean, she can buy anything she wants. Spending money on her isn’t going to mean much. If this is a hobby she enjoys, then it’s a sweet gift.

I imagine that is the last kind thing I will ever say about Tom Cruise…

    @lisa

I noticed the “my husband” thing, too. Why not say “Tom”? We all know who he is and she knows it, so… conscious effort to not make him the centre of all her interviews, maybe? In any case, it is really unnatural.

  89. Mary Jane says:

I would have LOVED a sewing machine (serger/embroiderer) for my b-day! The one I want is only $11,500!

  90. dholmas says:

Not a bad gift. I love my sewing machines, but, I use my commercial machine all of the time. It is satisfying to make something. I just finished a leather headboard for the guest room. You do not have to have jewelry or whatever for a gift.

  91. Mary Jane says:

    @90. dholmas: Post some pics!

  92. Crash2GO2 says:

I don’t know why people find it strange that he would give her such a gift. What makes a gift special is its thoughtfulness, not its price tag. The woman has enough money to buy herself anything she wants, and I’m sure he gives her tons of expensive presents. This just seems to me to be a sweet gesture on his part. It was something she wanted and I’m sure he got her one with all the bells and whistles.

  93. ka says:

does she get to have the scieno slave labour being paid 50 cents an hour make clothes for her bratty kid on said sewing machine?

  94. Micki says:

My mother-in-law gave me diamonds for my birthday. I guess I should return them and ask for a duster.

  95. Kristine says:

I think it’s a nice gift. Just because you have lots of money does not mean you need to spend millions every birthday. She probably has everything she wants, and then some, so if she likes crafty stuff then it’s probably a great present.

And I don’t see why scrapbooking/sewing/whatever should be a sad hobby just because you’re rich? I don’t do any of these things, but I would love to be able to sew.

  96. RHONYC says:

a very considerate gift when you think about it.

this way, she can sew together her ‘beard’ when it needs repair. 😆

  97. TXCinderella says:

Awwwww…Isn’t that sweet? He’s keeping the little woman home sewing.

  98. Cha Cha Loca says:

I would have kicked him in the nuts.

  99. Aqua says:

That gift kind of reminds me of when my husband buys me a gift that he really wants for himself kind of like let say a tool kit.

  100. crazydaisy says:

Poor Katie. Not that there’s anything wrong with a sewing machine, but I get the feeling the bloom is off.

  101. I’m pretty sure she can buy her own sewing machine. Also – she appears to have bedazzled a sweatshirt and then put it on in the top pic. Not a good idea.

  102. I think that is really neat! Obviously, Katie likes to sew and make things herself, and what better way to relax than sew? I love my sewing machine! It is nice to be able to take a piece of fabric and make it into a beautiful garment, or a snazzy decorator item. I had to buy my first sewing machine. I wish there had been someone to give me a Brother CS600i for MY birthday!
    Love ya,
