Tom Cruise bought Katie Holmes a sewing machine for her 32nd birthday

fp_5247458_cruise_holmes_cwny_12_15

There is just something so sad about this Katie Holmes interview. I don’t know… I think it just struck a particular chord with me. Katie sat down for a Women’s Wear Daily (via People) interview, and she talked a little about always traveling, always being on the move, and what she does to make various places feel like home (From WWD via People):

One of her tips for making daughter Suri Cruise, who’ll be 5 in April, feel at home no matter where they are? “Bring lots of crayons, glue good paper and you can turn any room into a very warm, familial place.”

Which is kind of… I don’t know. Yeah, I get that she’s talking about doing arts and crafts projects with Suri, but it conjures up this image of Katie, the robotic girl-child-bride, sitting alone in her latest Xenu-cave, drawing stick figures. But the real sadness (for me) comes with this:

“My husband got me a sewing machine for my birthday,” Holmes said, adding that she likes to get Suri involved. “My mom grew up making curtains and pillows and everything, and it made our home very warm, so I like to do things like that with my daughter.”

Okay, I too got a sewing machine for my birthday… when I turned 10! I used to take sewing classes (I was good) and I was really into it and everything. Now, Katie is 32 years old. And she’s embarking on an ill-fated second “career” as a “fashion designer” and she fancies herself to be “crafty”. Oh, CB just reminded me that Katie scrapbooks too. It’s just… sad. I’m not saying people who sew and do crafts and scrapbook are sad, I’m saying that thinking about Katie Holmes doing all of those things (while she’s all drugged out or whatever) makes me sad for her.

Also, it’s kind of a funny/odd gift for an A-lister to give his young wife for her birthday, right? Why not give her a broom and a mop, or something else that says “All I wanted was for you to shut up and be a happy little CoS-bot homemaker”?

Kaiser, as well as you write, your real talent is in selecting the pics to go with the story! Katie’s face says it all in these. I bet she has her first adult beverage by 9:00 a.m. everyday.

Lol! It was probably some kind of designer sewing machine worth fifty grand.
She might turn out to have more success as a designer, you never know. Look at Victoria Beckham. I mean I know she doesn’t actually sew, but still.
Sounds like Katie is yearning to do something creative and meaningful with her life, since the acting thing hasn’t been going too well.

And I’m not some Susie Homemaker looking for a hobby to pass the time waiting for hubby to come home, either, just someone who really enjoys making things with their hands. As an avid sewer & artist, I think it was
a sweet gift. A top of the line machine is very pricey & does all kinds of stuff that a creative person dreams about. One of the
first things I bought after my husband died, and I got the insurance cheque, was a really great $4000 machine….and there are much more expensive ones. Heck, after losing my husband, I deserved a treat…and Katie deserves a whole lot for what she has to put up with. Mind you, a sewing machine isn’t the kind of thing you want to haul around with you on jet-setting trips!

I can imagine she got a hell of a sewing machine! I just turned 30 in November and I got a sewing machine “for my birthday” last summer. It is a simple machine (as I am MUCH the beginner) but it was still a bit pricy – I would probably die for her sewing machine! It’s probably the 9,000 dollar Quattro and she refers to it as a simple machine!

Or did Katie get that sewing machine because they have to save money now, after they spent so much on Suri’s costumes for carnival last year?

The way KH is dressed quite often, she looks like she’s not only in need of a sewing machine, but also in need of a course on how to actually use it. Anyone remember those Holmes/Yang pants that looked like the hem was sewn by hand by someone who was visually impaired?

For the average person a 500.00 dollar or more sewing machine would be a fantastic gift for a crafty person but for a multi-millionaires who wife that has been serially trying to get in the fashion business since 2009 and probable loved sewing for long, a sewing machine for her 32 birthday and they been together for what 5 ½ years. To me that should have been a gift he could have given her when they first started dating or a gift back in 2009 when she stated to make her on “fashion line”.

See the thing is, it’s okay if you ask for it, or someone notices that you want it. It’s not okay if it’s a hint that person thinks you should be doing. Katie fancies herself a designer, so a sewing machine is probably a thoughtful gift.

Also, I gotta agree with you Kaiser, something about that story is just really sad. It’s not pathetic to do any of those things, I love sewing myself. What IS pathetic though, is the way she talked about it. Some people are saying they got sewing machines as gifts, and I agree, that’s cool. But Katie Holmes is just so sad and lifeless, and her talking about that sewing machine reinforces just how lifeless and unhappy she must be now. And she must yearn for her mum and her childhood (she said early on she wanted a catholic childhood for Suri too), can you blame her?

katie will leave him when the time is right and she’ll be applauded for “escaping” the “evil monster”. it’s interesting how the media works. he was painted as this monster, when in reality none of the women he’s been with had anything bad to say about him. everyone who has met him has only nice things to say about him.

I have never been like this. My mother bought me a sewing machine when I graduated from High School. Wishful thinking on her part. I tried to take it back to the store to trade it in for loads of music. To no avail. So it’s still in my closet, nearly ten years later, still in the box.
So it ain’t my thing. But I still think that some women love it and that they’re good at it. My mother-in-law can sew anything from a wedding dress to leather seat-covers (and she’s done both of those things more than once), and I think it’s rad that she’s so handy and that they save all that money. I also think it’s cool when people get really into quilting. It can be a real art, and it’s so personal and functional at the same time. Ok. I’m done.

And to the person saying she gave Suri a box of gummi penises, that’s not true. According to E!, Suri picked up the box of candy thinking they were gummi bears. When her mother saw what they were she took them from her and put them back.

    hahahahaha!

As for the gift, I actually think it’s nice that he would get her a hobby gift for her birthday. When you have all the money in the world, spending more and more of it on holidays probably just starts to ring hollow. I mean, she can buy anything she wants. Spending money on her isn’t going to mean much. If this is a hobby she enjoys, then it’s a sweet gift.

I imagine that is the last kind thing I will ever say about Tom Cruise…

    @lisa

I noticed the “my husband” thing, too. Why not say “Tom”? We all know who he is and she knows it, so… conscious effort to not make him the centre of all her interviews, maybe? In any case, it is really unnatural.

I would have LOVED a sewing machine (serger/embroiderer) for my b-day! The one I want is only $11,500!

Not a bad gift. I love my sewing machines, but, I use my commercial machine all of the time. It is satisfying to make something. I just finished a leather headboard for the guest room. You do not have to have jewelry or whatever for a gift.

I don’t know why people find it strange that he would give her such a gift. What makes a gift special is its thoughtfulness, not its price tag. The woman has enough money to buy herself anything she wants, and I’m sure he gives her tons of expensive presents. This just seems to me to be a sweet gesture on his part. It was something she wanted and I’m sure he got her one with all the bells and whistles.

My mother-in-law gave me diamonds for my birthday. I guess I should return them and ask for a duster.

I think it’s a nice gift. Just because you have lots of money does not mean you need to spend millions every birthday. She probably has everything she wants, and then some, so if she likes crafty stuff then it’s probably a great present.

And I don’t see why scrapbooking/sewing/whatever should be a sad hobby just because you’re rich? I don’t do any of these things, but I would love to be able to sew.

That gift kind of reminds me of when my husband buys me a gift that he really wants for himself kind of like let say a tool kit.

Poor Katie. Not that there’s anything wrong with a sewing machine, but I get the feeling the bloom is off.

  97. I’m pretty sure she can buy her own sewing machine. Also – she appears to have bedazzled a sweatshirt and then put it on in the top pic. Not a good idea.

  98. I think that is really neat! Obviously, Katie likes to sew and make things herself, and what better way to relax than sew? I love my sewing machine! It is nice to be able to take a piece of fabric and make it into a beautiful garment, or a snazzy decorator item. I had to buy my first sewing machine. I wish there had been someone to give me a Brother CS600i for MY birthday!
    Love ya,
