Mark Wahlberg not happy about Saturday Night Live parody skit

Saturday Night Live did a parody last weekend of the show Mark Wahlberg produces, Entourage, featuring Andy Samberg talking to a bunch of animals in the style of the characters on the HBO series. Samberg did a near perfect imitation of Wahlberg asking the animals how they were doing and telling them to say hi to their mothers for him. It was pretty funny for the first few animals, and kind of a surreal concept, but they dragged it out for just a little too long as is typical on SNL.

Wahlberg had a Q&A that was published in Sunday’s NY Post in which he’s promoting his upcoming action film, Max Payne. When asked for his thoughts on the SNL parody, he dismissed it as unfunny and said the show has jumped the shark. He also said that he’s turned down SNL’s requests to host in the past:

Someone showed it to me on YouTube. It wasn’t like Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin, that’s for sure. And “Saturday Night Live” hasn’t been funny for a long time. They’ve asked me to do the show a ton of times. I used to watch it when Eddie Murphy was there and Joe Piscopo and Bill Murray. I don’t even know who’s on the show now.

Wahlberg could have handled that much better - like with a sense of humor. He could have praised Samberg’s pitch perfect imitation of him, but he decided to dismiss it and act like the show is irrelevant when you can tell it annoyed him.

This reminds me of a couple of things Wahlberg said early this summer. He said that the Oceans movies sucked and he’s glad he turned down an offer to star in them and act all buddy-buddy with the other A-listers. He also criticized his relatively new neighbors, the Beckhams, for bringing the paparazzi to his neighborhood. He called David Beckham a f’cker and said that he should go back to the UK, but that he was just in Britain and “they don’t want him back there.”

Wahlberg is quite the curmudgeon for a guy who is just 37. I kind of find it hot that he has this totally humorless personality, like a guy who would spank you with a sexy scowl on his face.

  1. Well, to be accurate, he said Ocean’s 12 sucked. And he’s not wrong. (And Ocean’s 13 was, if not quite as bad, just as lame and self-reverential.)

I like him, he calls a spade a spade and isn’t bothered too much if people take offence. Rather this than a Hollywood where so many people sychophantically kiss a*se for a living.

  2. That SNL skit was so funny! My husband and I were cracking up. If you closed your eyes it sounded just like him! And the obsurdity of the dialog just made it funnier. For the record, Marky Mark can be as big of a curmudgeon as he wants…. he’s THAT good looking :)

  3. I never really found Mark Wahlberg attractive in any way - but thought that maybe he had an attractive personality that I was missing out on. Now I KNOW I’m not attracted to him at all. (Sounds like a douche.)

  4. He’s sounds kind of refreshing - funny comment about the Beckhams.

  5. Yeah, Wahlberg could have handled it a lot better, and it would have died. Usually not a fan of Samberg, but he was dead-on.

Would it kill Mark to show a little humility? He’s a talented actor, but he’s not The Second Coming. :x

  7. All this bitching from the man who used to be Marky Mark? A little perspective, please.

  8. There’s “telling it like it is” and there’s being a miserable git. Marky Mark has always been a miserable git.

    I heart Entourage though!

  9. He is a good actor, he is good looking, and he is good looking. As well as being a good looking actor. Did I mention that he was good looking? That being said, I thought the skit was sort of funny. He shouldn’t of reacted the way he did though. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Even if its a bit silly. =)

  10. Jen (the other one):

Shut up, Marky Mark, and get the eff over yourself. Asshat.

  11. He should be happy he’s even being parodied at all. Entourage has gone downhill and it’s only a matter of time before he’s looking up the Funky Bunch’s phone numbers.

  12. Well, I have to agree with the sexiness of his curmudgeony attitude. I’d get off his lawn *any* day.

…sorry, that was awful. But I do have a thing for ill-tempered guys, and he’s one of the hottest there is. I think it’s endearing, really. He reminds me of this hottie who used to be in my history class in high school. He was just the bitchiest guy in the entire school, but SO damn good-looking. I always relished getting into snarky debates with him.

  13. ya the skit was funny for a minute (andy samberg got his voice down perfectly!) but you said it, they dragged it out too long.
he shoulda had a better sense of humor about it though.
but hes sexy as hell so ill let it slide this time… PLUS entourage is like my fave show!

  14. Mark is right about SNL. I think MAD TV generates more laughs per episode, so does just about any British comedy, but
that’s just me. Through the years SNL has lost its edge since the original concept, as so many comedians and comedy shows do. It’s all about catering to middle America and sponsorship. They’ve already overdone the Palin imitation. God help us if McCain and Palin get elected, it’ll be 4 more years of parody.

  15. The fact that he remembers Joe Piscopo as funny tells you that he’s brain-damaged.

  16. Who is he to be talking about jumping the shark? He was in We Own The Night.
