‘Fast Five’ smashes records, is Dwayne Johnson the secret ingredient?

therock

It’s no surprise that a tried-and-true franchise once took first place at the box office this weekend, but it’s somewhat astounding that Fast Five surpassed predictions of $70 million to rake in an estimated $83.6 million at the U.S. box office. In a very distant second place was Rio, which added another $14.4 million (for a total of $103.6 million) in its third week. Taking third and fourth, respectively, were Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family with $10.1 million and Water for Elephants with $9.1 million (which confirms what some of you hoped for last week; that is, the Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, and Christoph Waltz combo did indeed have legs). Failing miserably over the weekend were Disney’s Prom in fifth place with $5 million and Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, which also carried a 3D premium but only pulled in $4.1 million to land in sixth position. In sharp contrast to Fast Five the Hoodwinked sequel fared much worse than its 2005 predecessor’s opening weekend of $12 million and a total domestic take of $51 million. The good news in all of this is that there will be no Hoodwinked Three! Wolf Gets It in the Balls Again. Oh, and Universal has already begun its grateful declarations for just how well Fast Five performed in smashing all sorts of records:

Even with a -13% drop on Saturday, which would be normal because its Friday’s grosses expanded by midnight showings, that’s still a bigger North American weekend cume for Fast Five than the top 2 openings this year combined (Rio $39M/Rango $38M). The film received an “A” CinemaScore and an “A+” from moviegoers under age 18. In terms of records, Universal is claiming: the biggest opening in Universal history (besting Lost World: Jurassic Park’s $72.1M), the biggest opening of 2011 (besting Rio’s $39.2M), the biggest Universal opening for 2011 (besting Hop’s $37.5M), the highest opening for an April Release (besting Fast & Furious’ $71M), the highest opening for the last weekend in April (besting A Nightmare On Elm Street’s $39M), the highest opening for stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, and producer Neil Moritz, and director Justin Lin. A lot of Uni execs are breathing easier today now that they’ve delivered a nice fat hit to their new Comcast overlords who must have been wondering if they’d bought a bomb factory instead of a movie studio. Fast Five opened first overseas 10 days ago and this weekend grossed a huge $45.3M at 3,211 dates in just 14 territories. That raised its early international tally to $81.4M. So now the worldwide total stands at a whopping $165M. The pic opened No. 1 in each of the 10 new markets. The openings are bigger than all the previous Fast franchise films. (Paramount opened Marvel/Disney’s Thor head-to-head against Fast Five in more than a dozen markets but not in the U.S. and Canada until next Friday. Of course, sequels do better overseas than in this country.) But even rival studios say Fast Five is on track for a $300M foreign and $500M worldwide finish. “Here’s what I’m most proud of: there is nothing obvious about what happened. No one can say of course every single decision how it was going to be made, how it was going to be cast, when it was going to be dated, how it was going to be sold, was very startegically thought out. There is no reason for the 5th movie in a franchise to have pulled off what this pulled off,” Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson told me this morning.

[From Deadline]

Out of all of the above-mentioned achievements, the most interesting bit of information is that Fast Five set a new high for the franchise, and now we’re left to debate the reason for the extra $12 million or so. Is this unforseen increase due to the IMAX premiums or the presence of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? Of course, the true reason is probably a combination of both factors, but I like to think that Johnson’s return to the WWE a few months ago and hosting duties for WrestleMania XXVII in early April both maximized his exposure and certainly persuaded more than a few wrestling fans to see his new movie. Also and for those who saw the movie, the homoeroticism of this installment was fairly unprecedented in its extremity (and I’m starting to realize now that the fact that Top Gun was also holding special viewings in many of its AMC theaters this weekend was no mere coincidence). Did anyone else hear audience members yelling, “Just kiss already!” during Vin Diesel and Johnson’s confrontational scenes? Such a nice way to kick off the summer movie season.

Nice to be back…Good Morning to you all…I am so loving that first pic – Guy on Guy action of Vin and Dwayne’s Goatie up close and personal.

  2. That top photo says it ALL!!! And that scene with them bailing out of a car that went over the cliff was awesome! The ROCK IS THE SEX!!! I loved that movie! Sorry for screaming, but dayum!

  3. Emily says:

It’s The Rock. I haven’t seen the last two FF movies, but I’ll probably see this because of him.

  4. Jess says:

Water for Elephants isn’t a success, no matter what the studio says. It’s based on a best seller book, has 2 Oscar winners, Sparkles who even pimped that showmance at the premiere in order to get the Twihards to watch plus more promotion than the other films in the top 10 and it still hasn’t made even 40 mil.

  5. Sarah says:

Am I the only one who got really turned on at the thought of Dwayne and Vin making out?? 🙂

  6. Photo JoJo says:

I’d pretty much watch The Rock read from the dictionary for for two hours. Agree with notpretentious – he is, indeed, the sex.

  7. kayla says:

Paul Walker must have a nice life. Make a Fast and Furious movie every couple years, get paid a lot, then go back to surfing or whatever with his jailbait fiancee (wife?) for 11 months a year.

  8. Brittney says:

I didn’t even know this movie existed until last week… but last night, a friend of mine told me she tried to get into three separate sold-out weekend showings before settling for a Sunday matinee. That’s when I realized it might be a surprise hit… but wow, those numbers are pretty crazy. I certainly won’t be seeing it, but congratulations to them.

  9. Sakyiwaa says:

hurrah! omg! i love THE ROCK. i loved the Tooth Fairy and The Game Plan and the Scorpion King…! i love the Fast franchise. Vin Diesel even… Paul Walker… Ooh but the Rock…he’s so endearing although he looks so macho! i CANNOT wait to SEE this!

  10. Listerino says:

It’s the Rock for sure. It’s the first movie of the series that I’ll allow myself to be dragged to the movies to see by my fiance just so I can see The Rock in all his muscly glory. I’m sure there’s plenty of other females seeing it for the same reason so having the female audience instead of just the car obsessed males is what has brought in the extra revenue for sure.

  11. Caz says:

Fast cars and hot men. The trifeca of Walker, Diesel and The Rock make the success of this a no-brainer. Drool.

  12. heb says:

I saw this movie this weekend and I effing LOVED IT. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

  13. Vee says:

I love Dwayne Johnson, he can do no wrong in my book. I will see this for him and I’m not in this demographic at all, but my son is.

@Jess – why whine about Water for Elephants, why take the time and energy? It’s not a failure. It’s made 40 million worldwide on a 38 million budget. Facts are your friend. LOL!

  14. Mag says:

They made so much money because it was the only decent movie out. Paul Walker is effing hot.

  15. Jess says:

38 million budget and where is the marketing money?
For a film with so many stars and such big promo tour you would expect better things and let’s not talk about the bad reviews even here in Europe.

  16. KimnotKardashian says:

The Rock is just so damn likeable. He always seems like he’s just happy to be a part of whatever movie he’s in, and never appears pretentious. I probably won’t go see this, but if I did, it would be in no small part because I totally support putting money in that guy’s pocket. He’s earned his success.

  17. devilgirl says:

@Jess- Why are you so invested in slamming WFE? Don’t see it. Simple as that.

  18. Vee says:

@Jess – keep on spewing negative if that makes you feel better!

  19. tango says:

The Rock is yummy. The best part of the movie.

  20. Dizzybenny says:

shows you can still make movies in 2D that will rack up the money.
I’m just afraid now that FF6 WILL be in 3D.f*ck!

  21. apsutter says:

Went and saw this with my boyfriend on Friday at a 4 o’clock showing and we walked in, and Ill be damned if that show wasnt sold out! I guess it sold out all freakin weekend. It was an alright movie, I think that the last one was better and it was way too long! But I do love me some rock and he deserved a little more screen time. Side note- Also saw “Water for Elephants” on friday and I loved the book but the movie was just ok. I liked it alright but I just can’t pinpoint why it wasn’t better…but Reese was so beautiful in it and the best part of that movie for sure.

  22. KatScorp says:

I enjoyed Hoodwinked 1 a heck of a lot – I even brought the DVD last week – and I have been looking forward to the sequel opening this Thursday Down Under. Screw other peoples’ negativity; the first Hoodwinked was clever and fun, so I’ll ignore the naysayers and catch it this week.

  23. Chelly says:

I went and it was sold out for the two time slots we wanted so we had to wait a half hour or so, def worth the wait! Great way to escape and nice eye candy for both sides! The subtitles annoyed me a little because they don’t translate it correctly but its a cool movie overall!

  24. Jess says:

I’ve never seen any of the Fast&Furious movies, but The Rock is the only reason why I ever would. Hot damn.

  25. OMJ says:

There is NO FREAKING way that Vin is as tall as the Rock. None. But I would love to be the meat in that man-sandwich.

  26. CHICKIEBOO says:

DWAYNE IS ONE SEXY BLACK MAN VIN DIESEL NOT SO MUCH!

  27. SRM says:

The Rock for HGF! He is hot but his smile is the best part!

  28. RanCan says:

I loved the movie! Hate to sound like a broken record but HOT DAMN the Rock did it for me as well. (Thought I was going to see Paul Walker, and ended up a definite Rock fan. The women were as beautiful as the men were clever and funny. Totally kept me on the edge of my seat!!

  29. jayem says:

It’s The Rock. Everyone loves him, men and women. Add in Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Tyrese and Ludacris and you’ve got some eye candy for everyone.

LOL @ PhotoJojo. I said the exact same thing. He could read the phone book for two hours and I would think it was Oscar worthy!

  30. truthSF says:

Damn!! I just checked with BOM… and the movie total jumped up from a $83 million to $86 million for the weekend. There must be a lot of horny women out there. 🙂

  31. Louise says:

It’s really bizarre that Fast 5 made so much money. I didn’t know that many people still loved the franchise.

I have to agree with Jess. I don’t understand how some movies are called bombs(Madea) and others are hits(WFE). Madea cost a 1/3 of WFE and has made $10 million more without any big stars. Yet WFE is called a hit eventhough it’s making less money and has bigger stars, budget, and promotion.

  32. Amanda G says:

The guys at my work were excited to see Fast Five because of two “big” action stars being in it. Rock and Vin. So I think that is why it did so well. I only watched the two movies from the series that Michelle Rodriguez was in. I guess she’ll be in the next one so I’ll watch that too. Michelle and Vin have crazy chemistry!

  33. Cherry Rose says:

My uncle had the pleasure of working on the set of this movie and said that Dwayne Johnson is one of the nicest guys all around. He’d regularly talk to the crew members and was very easy going.

Unfortunately, this same uncle had John Travolta hit on him, and even had John ask him if he wanted to go to his hotel room and drink with him. Poor Gary. >.<

  34. Lucy says:

Oh Lord, my panties. They exploded.

  35. chris says:

It’s because of genre, Louise. You have to use perspective. WFE opened something like #7 romantic drama of the 2000’s so that’s big while the last Madea movie opened to $41m so this Madea opening at $25m is a flop by comparison. If we don’t use perspective then Fast Five is a flop because it didn’t open to $142m like Eclipse did.

Anyway, love the Fast and Furious movies. Love the Rock. Can’t wait to see this. Loved Water For Elephants. Wonderful movie. Rio was very cute. Loved the main blue bird. Jesse Eisenberg should voice more cartoons.

  36. Jag says:

    Dwayne, for sure!

  37. bestmenow says:

Saw it 6 times and I love it. Go see it. It is the best movie fun of my life. The Rock is icing on the cake. He is a team actor. Congratulation !!! to the whole team of The Fast Five !!! p.s. I love the close up shots of Vin Diesle and The Rock stare down.

  38. Andrew says:

It isn’t the kind of movie that’s ever going to win awards but I found Fast Five to be very entertaining. Just an unapologetic, over-the-top action flick, that can be a lot of fun so long as you don’t take it too seriously. I haven’t seen it since I watched it on opening weekend in the theater so I’m pretty excited to see it again, which is another reason why I’m glad to have Blockbuster Movie Pass. Blockbuster gets a lot of movies 28 days earlier than Redbox and Netflix. It’s a very cost effective way of renting movies, games and it has a ton of instant streaming too. So I put this movie at the top of my queue. Oh yeah, and as DISH Network employee I’m also happy to tell people that when they sign up for DISH now they can get 12 months of Blockbuster Movie Pass absolutely free.
