Remember how Johnny Depp looked like hell for more than a year? Something was going on with him, like he just gained some weight and it all went to his face, plus some bad facial hair and a bad haircut… all of it conspired to make him look pretty bad. He looked kind of rough in The Tourist (but I didn’t think he looked as hideous as some of you thought), and then he looked pretty rough for The Tourist’s promotional duties. Well, that Johnny is gone, and he’s been replaced by a newer, sleeker, more chiseled Johnny. These are some photos from last night’s premiere (at Disneyland) of Pirates of Caribbean 4. Johnny wore some kind of Cowboy Lite ensemble, and he showed off his slimmer face. If it was anyone else, I would say he might have gotten some work done. Because it’s Johnny, I suspect it’s just a diet or something like that. Perhaps he’s taken up smoking again to suppress his appetite.

For some reason, Penelope Cruz decided to deck herself out in a full-length evening gown for the premiere – once again, it was at Disneyland. She’s usually not this much of an over-dresser, but maybe she just felt like wearing something big and feathered for one of her rare nights out after having a baby. I would have liked the dress if it was for an awards show or something, although the boob-feathers are a little bit overkill for any occasion. The only thing I can really complain about is the bangs trauma. I hate too-short bangs on adult women. And Penelope doesn’t need them – she gorgeous (and freckled) without the bangs.

Johnny just looked puffy before, like he was retaining water in his head and turning into Mickey Rourke. Maybe he was on medication.

He has lost some weight, but it wasn’t even fat during the promotion of The Tourist*, he was bloated like a woman during that period… And the haircut makes him younger.
I don’t comment on his and Penelope’s outfits, too ugly.

If he did get work it’s the most natural looking surgery ever. He never looked unnataurally smooth or incapable of moving any part of his face. I think it’s the combination of weight loss (he did say he put on weight to look more like a Midwestern math teacher and probably lost it from filming all the action parts in the new POTC movie) and a haircut.
Yeah, I’m going to take the same route and say he’s cleaned up a bit, lost some weight, maybe even slept for a week.

There was a piece on another site that mentioned Johnny had major sciatica pain during filming of POTC. Perhaps he was on some kind of pain meds and was retaining water. In any case, he always looks great to me.
He’s been tweaking his face for years now, it’s just subtle work so people don’t point it out. 99% of Hollywood gets something… Saoirse Ronan recently got her nose done.

I’ve worn bangs my whole life (I’m 60+), so I’m no doubt prejudiced. I think bangs suit some faces, and other faces look better without them. There’s no blanket rule IMHO.
10# If I remember correctly, Kaiser had horrible bangs at one time in her life and has never recovered from the trauma, so bangs on anyone gives her flashbacks. She has post-traumatic bangs disorder:)
His weight loss came from dieting for the part of Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows which he is currently shooting. Johnny looks great no matter how heavy he is…if he were round I would roll him in sugar and take a bite…yum! I hate he had his mole removed…it was sexy.

I hate to disagree but I cannot get over Depp’s styling. He looks awful. The hair, the glasses, the necklaces, the coat! I am normally always in awe of Johnny Depp. In these pictures not so much.

I think I read somewhere he is on a green tea diet for his next role, he was very bloated looking though for awhile though it did seem more than just weight gain. (I still would though, even with that awful suit!)Johnny is my forever (Ed)wood.

When you start dropping lbs, it often shows in your face even before you reach the point of being able to zip those old jeans… The guy’s face does look kinda tight, but hate to think he’s sold out completely.
Puffy Depp was a depressing sight—tho by Pirates Part 14, I’d get bored enough to start boozing too—maybe even w/a gross old Stone. And forget I wasn’t young enough to do that stuff anymore without contracting a serious case of Puffery… ’til seeing the pix 🙁
Hope this is just the result of a much-needed diet. If he stays fit & lays off the liquor, there’s no need for a male actor to erase 40s-type signs of aging (esp since a few lines can be very sexy). Besides, it’s all kinds of wrong for really top-notch actors to mess w/their faces. It IS a sell-out, & a loss, as they are damaging one of the key tools of their trade.
First rule of face tweaking is to do something to your hair so people think that’s why you look different. I think he’s had something done, and I think it’s filler. He doesn’t have any nose to mouth lines.

Penny looks great. I like that she is doing a different look than everyone else this season (I’m so sick of the sparkly nude dresses). I think because its black, and shes got full coverage, the dress is appropriate for the occasion. It’s fancy, but she’s a star who just had a baby and I’m sure she wanted to kick start her next movie offer by showing how good she looks.
Johnny is not doing it for me. He hasn’t changed his style remotely since 2002. Everyone needs to evolve a bit. I don’t think he’s worn anything but Purple and Black in years. And, his mustache is skeevy.
Keith looks great. I like how he incorporated the beige trend into his outfit without losing his sense of style. Keep on, keepin on Keith.

Lately every other story seems to be about “did so and so tweak their face” or “bangs trauma – boo”. Same story different celebrity. It makes me sad.

The Tourist comes out on DVD down here soon, I’ll be checking it out to see how ‘bad’ it is for myself. It will be interesting to see if it is really as bad as people have said, or if people have just been brainwashed by the critics/haters.

He has too many fine lines (and on him they are smokin’ hot fine lines) visible in his face to have been plasticked. I genuinely believe he would never do that, but he could just be blinding me with dongesse. Time will tell. Still his face though. The ‘stache is less skeevy than it was, to me, and although I love him with longish hair (yes, even when it’s dirty) this does frame his face well.

I’m going to be in the minority here, and suggest that he has gotten a little subtle tightening done. I am his age, and know for a fact that he should be showing SOME laxity in his face, neck and jowls and should have some nasolabial folds by now. And I’m seeing diddly here. Perhaps all that weight gain and facial hair was a ruse to distract from other changes that were going on until it all settled.
But he does look edible.

Maybe he had a revelation about how rotten he looked for so long. There really aren’t many men who can carry off that long-hair look. It always look like they comb it with an egg-beater. His hairy head/face condition made him look lost in time. Perhaps it’s just laziness.
I’m with you Kaiser on too-short bangs. It’s the Kitten from Father Knows Best syndrome (watch the age cracks–saw it on reruns!). Although I admit, Penelope’s definitely getting away with the look here though.

Have to disagree with #56. I’m middle-aged, too. I lost some weight and my face slimmed down, but I didn’t get any jowls or sags. To be fair, I’m part Cherokee, too, and that may be the difference. I’m not wrinkled, either. Hey, us native Americans should get something over on the rest of you! Anyhow, he’s definitely dropped weight and I love the suit and shoes and hair and…..etc. Maybe he just had a serious case of the Italian munchies while he was filming the Tourist? Add in all those layered, sloppy clothes and you have a big mess, I don’t care who you are!
It’s weird because his face was SO bloated but he didn’t really appear to gain weight anywhere else. So I don’t think it was really a weight loss/gain issue.
The hair style he had did nothing for his cheekbones, true. But he’s had long hair before and it never made his face look puffy before. Maybe it’s because he’s older now?
His face still looks natural to me. Honestly, I wonder if he was on some kind of medication and is finally able to be off of it?
That dress IS over the top. But she pulls it off as only she can. She’s beautiful. I hope this movie is good for the sake of everyone involved. I loved the first Pirates movie, but didn’t get into the other installments, apart from a few awesome cinematography scenes.

I think Depp looks better and happier than he has for a while because I think he knew he was making a dump of a movie in The Tourist, but he wanted the paycheck, so he went along with it. Like maybe he thought it would be interesting, then he realized neck-deep that it was going to be shit, and he kind of gave up and went through the motions. He’s a talented actor, after all, and a lot of the critics were calling that movie the worst of the year. He’s been back doing what he states as one of his all-time favorite roles, so it seems only natural that he’d be a bit more “sprightly”. I know some of you might bombard me with domestic and international earnings for that movie, but I guess all I have to say in reply is that “twilight” also gets big box office numbers. Doesn’t make it any better than utter drivel.
Erm, JD was rocking that haircut when James Franco was rocking diapers, ffs . I’m glad he’s finally cut it. Hated hobo-hair Depp. He definitely looks like he’s dropped The Tourist weight. I don’t see him ever getting work done, though. He is SO not that guy.

I read in an interview somewhere that he gained weight on purpose for his role in The Tourist, because his character was meant to be presented as an ‘everyday guy’ – ie, with a little podge here and there.
And definitely NO “work” here. Just weight loss, haircut, and the world’s most glorious cheekbones.
Oh I’m so glad you posted this – he looked so bloated in The Tourist. I think he may have had a stem cell lift – that causes bloating before it settles. He looks terrific now

He lost maybe like 10lbs at most and he got a haircut. His face does not look tweaked to me at all. I’ve ben a huge fan of his for years and I met him in person at The Toursit premiere. In person, he did not look chubby in any way. He was really hot and smelled like bubblegum. It is really hard to gage celebrity’s size from TV and photos.
he looks like a budget 80’s mexican actor with his new look (No offense, honestly, I love latinos) but if your not a hot latino/mexican actor a white actor who can’t grow out a mustache properly should not. It just makes him look cheap. I hate it. It’s creepy.
All the “he took a shower” comments are so ignorant. If someone dresses different or has long hair, all of a sudden he’s dirty? Believe me, I’ve met and spent a few hours with him. No problem with grooming. I don’t know if he gained weight, but he said he did, for The Tourist…probably about 10 lbs. He has a small frame and that would make a difference. Plus, if he was taking something like cortisone for his injured back, it also makes you look bloated. He looks great.

He has Native American blood so that is where he gets his bone structure from, people with good bone structure keep their looks far longer,, also his hair looks great, I love him anyway clean or grungy, he is sex on legs.
