Britney’s “Womanizer” single jumps to number one on Billboard Hot 100

Britney’s new single, “Womanizer,” has made a record-breaking leap from #96 to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week. No doubt the single, which sounds a lot like Alvin and the Chipmunks on asthma medication, is getting a major boost in popularity thanks to the racy video for the song, in which BritBrit writhes around nude in a sauna.

Another week, another record-breaking jump to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Britney Spears makes a near-maximum 96-1 rise with “Womanizer,” returning to the top of the list for the first time since her debut single “…Baby One More Time” hit No. 1 in January 1999.

This is the third time in the past two months that the mark for the biggest jump to No. 1 has been shattered. On the Hot 100 dated Sept. 6, T.I. soared 71-1 with “Whatever You Like” and last week he sprinted 80-1 with “Live Your Life.”

Spears’ single is spurred by first-week download sales of 286,000, the biggest opening-week tally by a female artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital downloads in 2003, besting Mariah Carey’s take for “Touch My Body” by just over 200 units.

In between her nearly 10-year gap between No. 1s, Spears has placed four other top 10s on the Hot 100, the last being “Gimme More,” the first single from her last set, “Blackout.” That song jumped 68-3 last October with first-week download sales of 179,000.

I’ll give Brit a congrats for the achievement, given the last couple of years and how far she had to climb to get back to the top. Look, I’m glad Britney’s not vag-flashing, shaving her head and dragging her kids around Robertson anymore- but let’s get real here: Britney is a product; a commodity - NOT a talented vocalist. The first time I heard this drivel, I moaned, “Dear God, my ears!” and hit the mute button. Don’t get me wrong: I’m thankful that churning out these singles is keeping her out of trouble. What baffles me is that there are lots of people out there who like this stuff enough to actually buy it. But I guess that’s the power of Britney, isn’t it? At this point, she could probably put out a recording of her making fart sounds with her mouth and people would buy it.

  1. Kind of torn here. Good that she’s doing well, tragic that Womanizer is at No.1. I’ll go with good for Brit and tragic for the music industry.

  4. God only knows why…

Are we really the minority in terms of intellegence? Forgive me for my ignorance but the so called hit is anything but music. How do they get away with this?

  5. Not a Britney fan. But am glad to see she’s back and kickin’ ass. Go Brit! GO!

  6. How do they get away with this? The same way they got away with using leeches, herbs, spells and prayer to cure illness- popular perception.

  8. I must agree. I saw the video of this song and it sucks. BUT I’m glad she is getting her life back together.

  9. Honestly, I blame the children. 14-year-old girls are seriously the bane of the world’s existence. They’re egomaniacs with nothing but time, and stipends of money (however much it may be).

It’s a silly movie, but Josie and the Pussycats was all about MTV brainwashing the youth… silly movie yes, but I just think MTV is that arrogant. Video killed the radio star.

  10. Eeek - I’ll probably get slaughtered for this one, but I really like her new song and I cant wait for the album to drop! Blackout was an awesome CD too. I know what I’m getting into with her music - it’s all breathing and electronic sound mixing and whatnot, but it’s catchy, fun to listed to, fun to sing along to, GREAT to work out to and also awesome to put on when I’m getting ready to go out. It’s party music! I agree she’s not a strong vocal talent, but she’s an “entertainer”… and an ace at that! GO BRIT!!

  11. She has always been thought of as an entertainer, but the best singer. People like to look at her (when she is in shape, like now) and they like to watch her dance and move. Britney is a true entertainer and we can’t wait to see her live! Go Britney Spears!!!

  13. totally agree with aaaaaaaa!!! If you take the Britney music for what it is, which is dance music its really enjoyable. Its electronica, she doesnt have to be Whitney (back in the day mind you)to make club tracks.

  14. Glad britneys getting back on her feet again, very happy for her.

I will admitt I don’t usually listen to her music because I’m more indie.. and her music tends to make my ears bleed it so.. altered…

BUT having said that, she’s my no1 source for music to work out to!!

  15. I just realized I wrote “fun to listed to” in my last post. I’m a dummy. I meant to write “fun to listen to”

  16. Heh, that single is infectious - you can stop humming it after you’ve heard it.

It’s funny that BritBrit is the lesser vocalist against Aguilera but her songs end up being catchier. At least Brit knows what she does best.

  17. Personally I have no respect for her. Can’t sell a single song without getting naked and make soft core porn and call it a music video. Talk about talent!

That is what I think of when I think of Britney now. 8O
