MTV’s new reality show ‘Married Young’ will ensure they’re divorced young too

Not content to just bring us troubled teen couples trying to raise babies, MTV will soon deliver up the troubled teen couples on their own in an planned upcoming series tentatively named “Married Young.” It could be worse I guess. It could be “Married Young By America” where the viewing audience votes on which immature couples spend the next four to six weeks in corporate sponsored matrimony. EW has some good suggestions too, like Desperate Houseteens and Teen Wife:

After earning a ton of viewers with its Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant reality shows, the network is developing a new series that could be seen as a natural next step.

MTV has ordered a pilot for Married Young, a one-hour docuseries following the trials and tribulations of newly wedded couples. The cameras tune in after the couple’s honeymoon and follow the couple through their first year as husband and wife.

The show will feature a range of couples and will show that grown-up responsibilities can be tough on young people, even without a kid in the picture.

If greenlit, Married Young (which is a working title… hmm, how about Teen Spouse? Teen Wife? Desperate Houseteens?) is expected to be less of a lightening rod than Teen Mom and 16 since there are no babies on board, and it has a different tone from those shows. But MTV taking on the institution of marriage is sure to spark at least some conversation.

[From EW]

MTV sort-of already did this with that Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica series which showed us just how tolerant Nick was of his ditzy bride. That marriage inevitably imploded, as have so many other relationships put until the smooshing mildly entertaining microscope of reality TV. It’s probably worth the trade off for most of these people. They get a taste of fame and end up getting plastic surgery makeovers and a couple throwaway tabloid covers, merely at the cost of their relationship, original personality, anonymity and most of their friendships. Some manage to survive mostly intact but they’re the exception not the rule. Still, it’s better that the focus won’t be on their poor kids, and I hope this report is accurate and that no children will be shown. MTV may try and think they’re presenting a cautionary tale, but just like Teen Mom they’re also giving so many young people a surefire formula for getting famous and earning some reality show cash.

This is stupid. People should not get married until they have at least something figured out in their lives – living, school, whatever. I’m 23, in 3+ year relationship, we’ve been living together for 2 years, and we are not getting married because he is in med school and I hope to be and who knows where life is going to go in the next ~5 years. I do not see this ending up well for these kids.

MTV USED to mean Music Television. Now it’s just a mass of trainwrecks of humanity. MTV is DEF on my “to don’t” list!

How I yearn for the days of Martha Stewart and Down Town Julie Brown…*sighs longingly*

Aww the harajuku couple is cute 🙂

Sometimes it works out. I married my husband at 19 (he was 21). We’ve been happily married for almost 13 years now. He is the love of my life, we have two beautiful children, we both have degrees, and I have absolutely no regrets.

Just because you throw marriage and children into the equation earlier in life doesn’t mean life stops. You just have to work harder to obtain the goals you want for yourself and your family. If anything, having them in my life made me want to accomplish more.

  5. constance says:

Why can’t they stop?! For the love of common decency. I loathe MTV.

  6. vanessa says:

I think it’s crazy now a days to get married at a young age. why? go have fun with other people and getting to know yourself and what you want before you make a mistake.

Unintentional giggle here as I imagine Martha Stewart decked out in a Cyndi Lauper-esque outfit interviewing the lead singer of Ratt. I am sure you meant Quinn. I miss Downtown Julie Brown too. Wubba Wubba!

    @ me
I am sure you are the exception to the rule. So many young couples aren’t able to make a go of it and I doubt the presence of cameras will help that.

  8. the original bellaluna says:

@ neelyo – Yes, I did mean Martha Quinn! OMG, the sleep deprivation (courtesy of my almost-2-year-old) has made me dingy! (Total mortification, here.) Oh, how your mental picture made me laugh! I almost peed my pants! (Can you just picture MS with that “edgy” haircut? I’m in hysterics here!) Thanks. I needed that! 😀

Can I get a music video, please?

  10. Jocelyn says:

Didn’t they already do this on Engaged and Underage?!

    MTV = Maternity Television

  12. fabgrrl says:

Sure, young marriage works out for some couples, but I hardly think that those rare, mature-beyond-their-years, couples are the same ones that want MTV cameras following them around all day. Combine the stress of a new marriage PLUS youth and inexperience PLUS having your every move broadcast to the world EQUALS disater.

  13. vanessa says:

@fabgrrl-totally agree with what you are saying! I’ve been with my husband for about 7.5 years and we started dating young and were together for 6.5 years before we got married and I wouldn’t have wanted cameras around to watch us fight and grow together, it would all feel staged…and we definitely wouldn’t have made it

ha ha empty tv strikes againg..when will reality tv go away

  15. Amea says:

Hasn’t every newly married celeb couple with their own MTV show ended up divorced?
    Nick & Jessica? (Newlyweds)
Carmen Electra & Dave Navarro? (Til Death do Us Part)
Travis Barker & Shanna Moakler? (Meet the Barkers)

I don’t even wanna think about the divorce rate for those kids who were on Engaged & Underaged, much less these young newlyweds. But I rest my case.

You said a mouthful there ITA.

call it: “where are my diapers!”

  19. KimnotKardashian says:

@Jocelyn – I immediately thought of the same thing. Engaged and Underage was awesome. It was all sheltered Christian teens who got married so they could finally do it. So addictive!

  20. StephanieMarie says:

Where exactly does it say “young”=teenagers?

  21. bluhare says:

Yep, look how well marriage worked for that couple with the twins. I don’t watch anything on MTV, but from what I’ve seen, the twins’ mom does look like she actually has set her priorities to raise these girls and not be Amber Portwoody. Am I right or have I got the wrong impression?

  22. Melinda says:

    @bluhare- I think you’re right. I hope you’re right!

  23. jover says:

Ah original bellaluna Downtown with Judy brown brings back memories – I can’t believe these shows draw that kind of ratings, but then maybe I’m the fool regarding popular tastes.

  24. GradStudentEatingHotPockets says:

Well if MTV uses young married couples who are pretty normal and are fairly well adjusted then NO ONE will watch this show. How interesting is it to watch someone pay bills? Or get groceries? Or watch tv?

This show will only work if you have people that like to create drama and stir up trouble. But whatever, I will probably end up watching it when I’m looking for something to take my mind off my thesis or lack of hot pockets in my freezer.

  25. Shannon says:

VH1 already did this a few years ago. Old news.
