Latest trailer for ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’: Lisbeth Salander takes a backseat?

Since I covered that budget YouTube red-band trailer over the holiday, I thought maybe you guys would be interested in the official (green-band) trailer. The same song is used – Karen O and Trent Reznor’s cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”. Same fast cuts, showing too much for those of us who know the story. But this trailer does show “less” than the previous one. Here you go:

Here’s the thing: this looks very focused on the Blomkvist/Daniel Craig character. The first book had a lot of Blomkvist too, but it feels like David Fincher is maybe pushing Lisbeth Salander and her story line to the secondary plot? Maybe it’s just how the trailers are being cut, so that people will see Daniel Craig and go see the film, because no one knows who the hell Rooney Mara is. But it feels like Lisbeth Salander – one of the most interesting heroines (or anti-heroes) of modern literature is being pushed aside. That, and my increasing worries about what they’re going to do with Lisbeth’s sexuality and the violence against her… ugh. I’m very, very concerned.

And by the way, in the last post, I noticed that some of you film snobs were bitching about the Swedish films, calling them low-budget and horrible. I disagree. While I thought the last two films in the trilogy had their problems, I though the first film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, was a really wonderful adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s work, and it’s my favorite of all of the films. I found it very well-made, and well-constructed too. Part modern noir, part old-fashioned detective story, part violent action-drama. And besides all of that, if the Swedish film was so budget and horrible, why did David Fincher steal so many of the shots and setups?

I agree it is worrisome. I don’t think this movie is going to end up doing the book/characters justice.

  2. Jez says:

LOL @ the wardrobe. Yes, I’m sure Lisbeth can totally afford that Burberry Prorsum biker jacket she’s wearing.

Who knew she shared closets with Kate Bosworth and Sienna Miller.

  3. vic says:

First movie was great and don’t think Fincher ever said it was low budget and horrible nor did he steal anything. People making this movie are collaborating with the Swedish producers. They wanted a wider audience and the story more fleshed out and his “distinct vision.” And she wasn’t too poor to buy clothes. She had an allowance and stole money by hacking.

  4. the original bellaluna says:

Yeah, I’m still not going to watch. I’ll stick with what I’ve pictured in my head while reading the books, thanks.

Rooney Mara is Kate Mara’s sister. Kate’s been in some movies; Shooter and Transsiberian are the two I’ve seen her in.

  5. Quest says:

Lisbeth is the star and should not be pushed on the back burner…she is the backbone of the storyline.

I still stand by what I said previously – that the book and first film adaptation was great…why fix it if it is not broken.

  6. e says:

I don’t like how the trailer is cut; it is too fast and disjointed. I have read the books and that is the only reason that I was able to comprehend the storyline while watching the trailer.

  7. vanessa says:

I gotta read the books now after reading these posts the last few days. I was interested in going to see it but seems the general consensus here is to read the books first than watch the film.

  8. the original bellaluna says:

@ vanessa – Or read the books and just skip the film.

Be forewarned: It takes 50-100 pages (at the bare minimum) to get into the real meat of the story of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and even then it can get tedious. Don’t give up. (I’ve had at least 3 friends tell me they just couldn’t get into it. I told them to keep trying.)

  9. Mia says:

Yes! Please read the books first… the films (swedish anyhow) are good, but different from the books…

  10. Lala11_7 says:

I saw the trilogy in one sitting…IT WAS GREAT!!! After I saw them, me and my guy was sitting around talking about who should direct the movies when they were made for American audiences…now, at that time, that wasn’t on the table…however I KNEW IT WOULD BE COMING UP…the movie SHOUTED REMAKE!!! (just for wider audience participation ONLY, not based on style or substance)…

The only director that came up was Fincher…

The casting is pretty perfect…and VERY Eurocentric…and Lisbeth’s character WAS kinda in the background in the first movie…

I think before everyone gets their panties in a twist…let’s see what’s presented…

  11. piedlourde says:

I don’t know if it translates well to non-Swedish speakers, but Michael Nyqvist is a horribly lazy actor. I loved him in Lucas Moodysson’s “Tillsammans” (“Together”) but I think that Nyqvist has done an awful, monotonous, non-emoting job ever since. That’s my main problem with the Millennium movies.

Oh well, I was never a big fan of the books in the first place. Too much filler, bad pacing.

  12. Delta Juliet says:

Oh good, I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who’s had a hard time getting into the book. I actually quit reading it about 3 months ago (maybe 75 pages in). I guess I’ll have to pick it up again and keep plodding thru it.

  13. Franny says:

I’m glad to see in these shots that she isn’t as sexualized as she was in the magazine spread (I get why they did that, but it was against everything that was written about Lisbeth). So yes, she may be wearing Burberry, but most people would only see a leather jacket. I’m happy that she doesn’t have a face full of makeup and her clothes aren’t tutus and underwear.

  14. Franny says:

@ Juliet – it really does take a while to get to the good part. Just stick through until the last ~75 pages of each book – you won’t be able to put the books down.

  15. Time out says:

    Kaiser,
Indiewire and Slashfilm just posted the international poster for the movie. Surprise, surprise, it’s Rooney Mara naked from the hipbone up to the breasts flashing her nipple rings with a tiny top just covering her upper chest. Daniel Craig is standing behind her. It’s pure check out how hot and sexy Lisbeth Salander is. Fincher said his wish for the poster is Rooney Mara completely naked so he got his wish at least for the international poster.

  16. Esmom says:

I just read the first book and think that Blomkvist is absolutely the main character. I kept waiting for the Lisbeth angle to catch up but it never really did (book 2 is a different story, much more Lisbeth-centric) so this doesn’t seem inappropriate.

I agree the trailer is really hard to follow unless you know the story but even then it’s hard to catch many of the scenes. It does seem, however, that they’ve done a great job of capturing the overall mood of the book, with its dark, cold Swedish winter.

  17. Jen says:

Can I just say I love the cover of Immigrant Song? So good.

  18. Time out says:

O.K. there is a more clear picture of the international poster and Rooney Mara is COMPLETELY naked from hip bone up with Daniel’s craig’s arms wrapped around her chest, above her breast. Leaving her breasts bare and shown with her lower female part in shadow. Daniel Craig is aged to look pretty cranky and a bit unattractive.

  19. susanne says:

Frannie, I noticed the difference in styling for the movie, too. I’m relieved, and I think trailers don’t necessarily represent how the film will play out. Remember, Daniel craig is fing hot, and will draw in regular guys who wouldn’t otherwise want to see some swedish film with a chick that’s not even that hot.
I think it comes down to how good an actor Mara is. I hope she’s fantastic and a great heroine, but I can see it being reaaaaly bad, too.
The first book is tough to get into.
I haven’t seen the last film yet. Maybe tonight.

  20. RHONYC says:

want. need. gotta. have. her outfit!

from the snood, to the bald brow bones to them badass kicks…
    that look is KILLER!

p.s. – in the 3rd pic she looks like she could Cynthia Nixon’s / Miranda Hobbes’ badass brunette lil’ sister. 😉

  21. jc126 says:

Yes, the trailer I saw last week emphasized Daniel Craig. I didn’t know what it was for til the end, and Rooney Mara only came in at the end, very peripherally.

  22. Flan says:

Ridiculous that of all films, they promote THIS film with a woman posing like that.

Will stick with the Swedish version, thank you very much.

  23. RobN says:

The first book was based primarily on the Blomkvist character so it doesn’t really surprise me that the movie is as well. It’s all told from his point of view. The sexuality doesn’t bother me, either. Lisbeth is totally at ease with her sexuality in the books so I’m not sure why it’s such a big deal here. The character gets breast implants for goodness sake; it’s not like she doesn’t want to be seen as a woman.

  24. Jess says:

Well, if I remember correctly, Mikael was the protagonist of the novels, and Salander kind of just overshadowed him because of how awesome she is. So it makes sense that the trailer would focus on Blomkvist, since he was the central character.

  25. Jem says:

Honestly, I think we’re pushing too many assumptions based on the trailer. I really do trust David Fincher so I’m maintaining my high hopes. Plus, I kind of agree with idea that they’re pushing Daniel Craig because, yeah, no one does know who Rooney Mara is.

That said, Kaiser, I think saying the Fincher is “stealing” the set ups and shots from the Swedish version isn’t really accurate.

  26. Reina says:

Having just reread the first book, Blomkvist’s story most definitely takes up the majority of the novel.

  27. Dromedary says:

What I’m disappointed about is not seeing the real focus of the books in these trailers: coffee.

Drinking coffee. Making coffee. Pouring coffee. Eating sandwiches while drinking coffee. Having coffee with one of his many conquests. Eating sandwiches alone in his cabin while writing. Making more coffee. Do they have editors in Sweden?

I think I’ll go make myself a cup of tea.

  28. Abby says:

Dromedary- OMG, I’m so glad you said this!! So funny! My mom and I were laughing about this exact thing. She said now she can never go to Sweden because she can’t take caffeine and wouldn’t want to be rude.

  29. Jen D says:

So that’s who covered “Immigrant Song.” I love the original, but I love this version even more. I like that it’s sung by a woman – Karen O’s voice suits it.

  30. rina says:

@Dromedary- i think there has to be a tie between the coffee and Billy’s Pan Pizza. jeez…that was the only thing Lisbeth ever ate.

  31. Dromedary says:

    🙂

  32. harfang says:

Oh HELL. That’s right. One more “straightening” for me to painfully anticipate. I’m still not over Being Human, dammit.
