Jason Mraz and his fiance broke up, and he waxes poetic: dreamy or high?

Jason Mraz doesn’t get enough love around here. He’s an extremely talented musician and a decent guy who keeps his business out of the tabloids. He’s not hanging out at clubs, getting DUIs or sticking his foot in his mouth all the time so we don’t talk about him much. We’ve written about him exactly twice that was two years ago, and they were low key pieces about something interesting he’d said. (We also featured him once on HGF.) He’s a multi-platinum artist and he’s all about the music. In fact Jason is so focused on his work that it cost him his engagement to his long term girlfriend. He just told The Daily Beast that losing his fiance was his biggest regret, and the way he said it sent a little pang through my heart. It was romantic, longing and sweet. I’m sure there are plenty of other women clamoring to take her place now. Here’s his quote:

Mraz told The Daily Beast exclusively that he’d recently split up with his fiancée, 29-year-old singer Tristan Prettyman. “My greatest mistake right now is, I’ve been clinging to my art,” he said. “In that, I have victory for my art and a great loss for my heart. At the moment, my beautiful fiancée is no longer my beautiful fiancée.”

Mraz, 33, explained (see embedded video) what led to the breakup. “Two halves don’t make a whole,” he said. “Two wholes make a whole. In my relationship, I was giving myself away to make the relationship better, but in actuality, wasn’t doing better by doing that. I became less of a man.”

“I have victory for my art and a great loss for my heart.”

Mraz popped the question to Prettyman last December after a lengthy on-again, off-again relationship that included a previous split, in 2006. “SHE SAID YES,” he tweeted on Dec. 24. He surprised Prettyman with a 2.3-carat diamond ring on the beach, “under a blanket of stars and a watchful bright moon,” as he later described on his blog. In January, he explained to US Weekly why Prettyman, a singer-songwriter, was the one for him. “You just know,” he said. “We grew up to be each other’s dream person. She is definitely my dream girl.”

He added last night: “We are still super friends, we go to yoga together, we surf together. We acknowledge the journey that each of us are on. We certainly want each of us to feel whole and complete. And it’s when you’re whole and complete that that attraction exists and it really thrives.

“The good news is that no matter what— ” he paused and glanced to the side—”I’m looking over here, because I think my publicist is freaking out.”

Some of that stuff can sound a little pretentious, but when you watch the video of Mraz saying it, you can tell that’s just how he talks. It’s sad when you split up with someone you were hoping to spend the rest of your life with, but better now than after you’re married and have to go through the headache of getting a divorce. It sounds like Mraz was having identity issues and was giving too much in the relationship. That happens all the time and it’s not only women who change too much in an effort to make it work.

I hope we talk about Mraz again soon, but that it’s not because he’s dating a twit of a starlet or model. That doesn’t seem to be his speed anyway. Who would be good for him who is single now? I can’t even think of anyone I like for him who isn’t married. (Zoe Deschanel and Emily Blunt come to mind but they’re both married.) That’s what happens with the good ones, they go fast.

he paused and glanced to the side—”I’m looking over here, because I think my publicist is freaking out.”

    Aw, cute.

  2. Dorothy#1 says:

Oh no!!!! So sad! I love him, he is so talented and his music is beautiful! I hope he finds his way.

  3. Crash2GO2 says:

Methinks they won’t be broken up long, not with such a love poem out there to her. Lucky bitch!!

  4. BellaLuna says:

I cant explain to you the love I have for this man. He is a beautiful caring person in every way. I smile daily because someone like him exsists in this world. His music is as beautiful as his heart. I hope he finds happiness…and I would certainly take Tristans place in a fraction of a second!

  5. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

No idea who he is. What does he sing? Also, he is very unfortunate looking.

  6. aenflex says:

Nothin but love for Mraz. He’s been awesome since forever. Live he’s even better, and that’s f’ing hard. So what if he’s emo. He’s real, and spiritual, and kind.

  7. Ecalling says:

Didn’t he say, though, that he would not get married until gay marriage is legal?

  8. MSat says:

Oh, that’s too bad, I really like them together. Tristan is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter too. Maybe they will get back together when he figures himself out?

  9. MJ says:

This guy’s music is the worst.

  10. garvels says:

Ecalling-Yes he did say he would not marry until gay marriage was legal. Even though I am a proponent for gay marriage, I thought it was lousy to place this stipulation on his intentions to marry. After he said that, I knew he had no intentions of getting married and he was just leading the girl on. I hope she finds someone who truly loves her and is willing to make a life long commitment not a political statement to up his PR image.

  11. BellaLuna says:

@mj…oh so do you like Little Wayne, maybe Gaga is your thing? yeah great stuff

  12. BellaLuna says:

Im going to have to ignore this thread because I love Jason so much that I know the haters are going to piss me right off. By the way he is not at all concerned with PR or his image, he loves Tristan with all his heart and Im sure still wants to marry her. He believes that one person can make a difference and thats why he does the things he does.

  13. maggie says:

He needs to get her back.

  14. Nancy says:

Aww it’s sad to hear about his break up I love Jason Mraz he has a quirkiness about him that I find so cute and I love his music.

  15. MJ says:

No, not a fan of Gaga or Lil’ Wayne. I like mostly old stuff, soul, rocknroll and whatnot. I just think this dude is whiny and boring. Why so defensive?

  16. esblondie says:

BellaLuna – I loathe Gaga and don’t like Lil Wayne, and I also don’t like Mraz’s music. So shoot us. Seems like a stand-up fella though; feel bad for him.

  17. Iggles says:

I hope they can work it out! Sounds like their still tight.

If not, they’re going to need to recognize that and cut contact for awhile. Not healthy to keep doing so much with an Ex if one of you doesn’t want to resume the relationship!

  18. Penguen says:

I only like some of his music, BUT –

I loved his song “Lucky” enough to make it the one that played as I walked down the aisle at my wedding. It will always be very special to my husband and me.

He seems like a good guy. I hope he and Tristan can find a way to make it work one day.

  19. MsCatra says:

Now I love him even more! It’s fantastic to watch him in interviews and see that he speaks, thinks, and acts the way you’d imagine from his music, not like some artists who write beautiful music and then act like douchebags *cough*MAYER*cough*

  20. Jewbitch says:

I <3 him. Have for years. I was one of the HGF beggars 😀
    It’s a geek crush. He’s sweet 😉

  21. RocketMerry says:

Aw, he’s a very good singer/songwriter and he’s cute and sweet. Hope he’ll do better soon.

  22. NotSoAnonymous says:

Super sad for both of them. I’m a fan of Jason and Tristan both (seriously if you don’t have her first record twentythree use this article as a reason to get it!)

They seemed like kindred spirits and to read some of the beautiful things she wrote about him on her tmblr your heart would melt.

However, she did recently say there that she had moved into a new place and that they weren’t going to live together yet. For two people who were engaged and living a rather free spirited lifestyle, that set off alarms for me. 🙁

“Lucky” was our first dance 🙂 Not original, just appropriate.

  23. Liana says:

don’t like his music, but HE is a heck of a guy.

  24. Franny says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE him. His music is smart and cute (you really have to get past the 1 major hit he has had in the last 2 years…that is not a favorite of mine of his music). I saw him live 2 years ago and he was great. If you don’t know who he is, just give him a chance.

  25. ToastedSkin says:

    Aww this is too cute.

  26. buckley says:

To borrow from Kaiser….he seems like a total pillow weeper to me.

  27. Kate Hansen says:

Any Jason Mraz fans ever listen to Barton Hartshorn? He has a very similar sound. Worth checking out!
